Dragon Prophecies #2

Holding Out for a Hero

Rate this book
Despite his good looks and sweet personality, Lance is convinced his Asperger’s gives him power--like the power to make people treat him differently. His mother told him he was special and that people would always misunderstand. That’s why she gave him an ancient necklace and a special cape to wear under his clothes because she was dying and wouldn’t be around to help him anymore. The necklace and cape do give him certain powers, like strength and speed and the ability to see the Shadow Men, nasty creatures who have begun congregating in large numbers all over town. When he sees a group of Dragons and their witches being attacked by the creatures, he jumps in to help, like a true super hero should and gets much more than he bargained for.

Sebastien is a Golden Dragon and typical of the breed—imperious, pushy, arrogant and gorgeous. He takes Lance with him to protect him, but he has no idea who Lance really is and who the powerful forces are that wish to steal Lance’s powers. Luca and the others are on hand to help navigate this dangerous, unknown force, but it will take the combined powers of them all to defeat it and cast away forever the source of Lance’s powers - which can bring great good or terrible evil and destruction to the entire world.

In this second book of the ‘Dragon Prophecies’ series (that absolutely needs to be read in order), the plot thickens as Luca and Dmitri continue to explore what the prophecy Luca received actually means. The dragonshifters, half dragons called Spawn, wyverns known as dragonets, and wizards are joined by the first of the “heroes” needed to fulfill their quest. Lance has a mysterious past and a few issues, but he definitely has a contribution to make. Sebastien is Dmitri’s cousin and has appeared before, but this time he gets a love interest of his own – except the situation is very challenging so he does not have an easy time of it. The story is told from various points of view which makes things more interesting but also a little less focused than in the first book.

I didn't like this book very much. I gave it three stars though, because while it had issues (I'll get into those in a bit) it wasn't offensively bad. In a lot of places I was struck by the wasted potential. That's why I decided to leave a detailed review. I'm hoping that the writers or editors engage with the community enough for this to serve as constructive criticism. Because, again, I didn't hate this book, and there was enough in terms of plot and characters that it made me want to read the next book in the series when it comes out.

I found this book is a little better than the first one in the series. There were less glaring mistakes.
Whereas the first book focused on Dmitri and Luca, this one is supposed to be about Sebastian and Lance, however we spend about the same amount of time with both couples. The point of view changes a lot, which is not something I usually mind, but in this case the writers switch not just between the two mains, but between almost every character we've met. Additionally, sometimes the writing is confusing; ex: within the same paragraph you'll have first person narrative from a character, 'I went over to them' for example, and then in the next sentence it will be in third person, 'Lance knelt down.', when Lance is the aforementioned 'I' from the previous sentence. I'm not sure I'm explaining this issue well, but it happened several times and it always made me have to check and see whose head I was supposed to be in at the time.

Not being able to tell a big difference between the character's narration and even speech was another issue. The Golden's minds all sound the same, there is very slightly more difference between Luca and Lance, but not very much. It was almost funny to hear Luca complain about not liking Sebastian very much, when he is almost completely indistinguishable from Dmitri. But then again, outside of sex, none of them seem to actually like each other very much. They fight constantly, and the Golden Dragons repeatedly talk about how demeaning they would find it to take a 'bottom' role in sex, without regard to the fact that they're talking directly to the men they claim to love, who they 'top' with some frequency. This issue came up in the first book too, but they don't come any closer to solving it here. (it would be one thing if neither were interested, or it was something that genuinely didn't appeal to one of them, but basically the bottoms would love to top, but the tops are 'too masculine' maybe? to even consider it. )

The heat level is moderate, but there's not a lot of chemistry between the mains. What's more, there is a ton of action packed into this short book, but very little conversation. Sebastian and Lance probably have at best ten conversations in the entire book, that includes private with just the two of them, and group conversations where they talk directly to each other. And the narration occasionally mentions this, that they don't get along, or they don't seem to have anything in common outside of sex, but they don't seem to care enough to actually try to fix these issues.

I still think the writing could benefit greatly from a stronger editing hand, mostly because there is a good bit of interesting world building, and the characters are not terrible, but the story is put together so clumsily that it's really hard to enjoy what you're getting. The fight scenes make almost no sense, there's not enough in the way of specifics to really picture what's going on, some character just wades into the fray and then they tell you who won. In one scene the phrase "literally mowing them down" was used to describe a person fighting a group of several assailants, but no explanation was given, was he hitting them with his fists? delivering potent bitch slaps? did he have a knife? No explanation given, just that there was a fight, then there was no longer a fight, and everyone talked about how impressive the guy had been in the fight.

For everything going on in these books, they could stand to be around a hundred or so pages longer, just so that we can actually get to know the people these stories are about.

Great Continuation of the series

I enjoy how the authors weave in additional pairings. It isn't just one couple's story, it's the story of a growing family. Men falling in love and finding a family. I absolutely love Lance, he is impossible not to like. The ending was fantastic. I cried a little at the cave scene. I can't wait to read the next book!

I liked this way more than the first book. I do wish we had gotten a little bit more time in Lance's head because he was really interesting. Dmitri was still an annoying character but the others made up for it. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Good book

It was a good read. I enjoy the series so far and can’t wait to start the third book. I am going to look for more books by these two authors.

I think I liked this book more than I liked the first one. This book is told from multiple points of view, which I really liked. We hear from just about everyone. Also, be aware that Lance's & Sebastien take up only a small portion of the story. The parts that there were I really liked. Lance was a wonderful character. I adored him and his dog Ludlow.

If I had one minor criticism, it would be that I wish the stories would be a bit longer. This one once again ends rather quickly. Much of it events are wrapped up in the epilogue and I really wanted more details. The story does not end in a cliffhanger per se, but there are many dangling plot points. It is part of a series so that is to be expected.

This is definitely not a standalone story. I would highly recommend that you read the first one in the series prior to starting this book. I do recommend the series, especially if you like dragon stories. A big plus so far for many people is there is currently no mpreg in sight.
