Illegal detention in Guantanamo Bay, human rights violation in Saudi Arabia, ethnic massacre in Kosovo, Syrian conflict, America's Iraq war, China's Tiananmen Square reference - unbelievable stuff in Political Science studies for Class 9 students.
25 years back when I was in school, I remember my civics book was so boring that, I used to mug up just a day before the exams and forget the whole content after 2 days. I feel today's children are so fortunate, to read this book which is so broad based that, it should be enough to open up the worldview of anyone.
I agree there could be little left bias. But, as they say, idealism is always left biased. You learn idealism in your school, till you become an adult, and confront the reality and move towards slight right, and finally settling at the center, as you mature. :)
I hear many teachers complain that Social Science studies have become very hard to teach in school. Now, I know how. Studying what we studied 25 years back, and teaching now, must be hugely challenging. I hope NCERT provides enough arms and ammunitions to its teachers.
This book was interactive. The case studies provided in the book made the concepts of democracy clearer and would be one hell of a class if the teacher is good enough to explain these things to children. Otherwise like most of us, civics will always be a boring subject which should be mugged up before exams and never quite understanding the meaning of the basics of our polity and constitution. Reading these books is making me more aware of why Indian democracy and its geography or its heritage is so praised. All these years it has been a cliché to call india a diverse land and full of heritage and this and that. But diving into the basics makes you see quite clearly that cliché became a cliché for a reason
It is beautiful how primers on subjects can add to one's knowledge things they might have been taking for granted. For instance, democracy, which has been called by some political critics as the "least worst" form of government. I believe this book does the job well (at least as an introductory school textbook) at letting the reader know the reason Democracy is criticized, or how is it probably, for now, a sustainable model for any state.
Class 9th NCERT of polity is really very important, you will know the basic concepts of Democracy, Constitutional Design, Electoral policies, Working of Institutions and Democratic rights through this book. All the things are written in a very short and concise manner with proper examples and narration. It will help to clear the basic concepts very easily. Overall, an amazing and must read!
