The blurb on this one intrigued me. I like seeing the world as it crumbles and the thought of men that were friends as boys coming together seemed fun. As boys they were a bit doofy, but that is to be expected. When we fast forwarded to them as adults they were all a bit sad. Life seemed to beat them down each in a different way. It bothered me how they made fun of each other, to the point that this is where I gave things up. I didn't believe if the bad thing happened they would stick together. In the end this one just wasn't for me.
This was an interesting variation of the common EMP apocalypse. The disaster starts as a CME but is exacerbated by a country that throws out nukes, mistakenly thinking they were attacked. The main characters are also not your usual prepper or former Navy Seal type but childhood friends that grew apart and had ordinary lives. The dialogue and interaction between them borders on juvenile at times...perhaps they have unresolved issues (LOL)? I also am not a fan of a criminal that becomes so dominant and unbeatable so quickly. I get that some bad elements would likely thrive when law and order are removed, but it also means that the story is about overcoming this guy rather than the more realistic issues of surviving such a devastating catastrophe. I already bought book 2 so will continue and hope there is some improvement.
There are too many things I like about this book that would potentially let out details best found out by future readers. Probably one of the best though is the way the author shows the dynamics of a group of childhood friends who have drifted apart but are brought back together as the world as they knew it is disintegrating all around them. Excellent portrayals of multiple complex characters with an excellent, fast moving, overall well written story !
* POSSIBLE SPOILER INFORMATION *
My one problem with this book though is that I have never heard of radiation poisoning as an after effect of an EMP, and I have researched EMP's extensively for multiple reasons. In both leisure reading of post apocalyptic novels as well as in depth research from both government based information, or more importantly for me, from renowned scientific research done in the field of solar flares and missile based EMP's, never have I heard of radiation being a concern related to these phenomena. If there is well researched data that radiation is a potential problem then I am more than open to following it up if sources are provided that I can look into for myself.
It's a difficult book to review. It started out great, then it took a step back, but by the end it had come back around. There are parts in the beginning that took me back to watching "The Big Chill" and there were some hilarious "old ladies in the grocery store" moments. The plot is developing nicely, some of the characters are coming along better than others, and poor Brody just doesn't strike me as a grocery store manager - he'd make a much better builder or contractor, something along those lines. I'm going on to book 2. During the slooooow part I convinced myself to keep plodding through, something so good in the beginning had to recover and it did.
Good story, good plot but at times the banter among the 44 year old men sounded like they were still in high school. That got tiresome so I skimmed those pages. An unknown country maybe N.K. has bombed several bases in the U.S. The main character vacillates about his approach to helping people or saving himself which I suppose would really be the case. I like stories where the bad guys are a little less invincible. Still for those of us who like apocalyptic fiction this will do nicely.
Really enjoyed this book. Very realistic and informative. The basic survival info is spot on. I hope and pray, we, as a country, are never in this position. Unfortunately, there are those that wish us harm and their mission in life is to destroy our country and our way of life. We must never forget the threat that exists within our own borders, as well, and prepare accordingly.
This would have been an even better story if those four guys weren’t so immature. I think Hunt missed the boat when he made them immature idiots. Their characters were so disappointing to the reader, you almost wanted to put it down. The story line is fairly typical of a post apocalypse world, and the events unfolding thereon. All in all I was more disappointed than anything else in that I thought it could have been fantastic, but it wasn’t. I am being kind here giving it a 4.
I liked the premise for this book, so picked it up; but the only reason I finished it was because I had started it. Don't get me wrong; this author is a pretty good writer, but this is the first book I read which had me wondering all along, which main character I was hoping would get killed first.
This is a really good story of the " end of the world as we know it " genre. It's flows really well, it's an easy read that captivates from beginning to end. The characters are interesting with each seeming to have a sideline issue or two to deal with as well. I look forward to the next installment and encourage any fan of this genre to give it a try.
Most of the EMP stories seem to go the premise that the EMP happens to the U.S. and then those who attacked never get mentioned. This one acknowledges the foreign actor and doesn't pretend they are not going to act. I hope we get to see what happens rather than simply pretending the foreign actors disappeared.
Good writing style. Characters are too immature and spend too much time agonizing over nothing. Maybe it would be better to say they are just extremely self-absorbed. I guess these people may be representative of the "snowflake" generation. I sincerely hope not. Certainly not representative of the "greatest generation". Even the cops are woosies!
I couldn't wait to start reading 📚this series after I saw book 3 released. It was everything I expected and more!!!! Action!!! Emotion!!!! Thrills!!! And yes, even adventure!!!! The characters are real as are their life's ups and their life's turmoils!!!! A great EMP read!!!! Now, in to book two!!!!!
This is an interesting storyline with very intriguing characters. There a little inconsistency, in the beginning Chase said he worked as TSA agent the Brody said he was Mr. Mom & had previously been in real estate and it was stated he was TSA. The writer truly needed a proof reader.
I was worried it was going to be one of those feel good ‘everyone gets back together and go save the world’ books. It wasn’t. It was gritty and full of individual personalities that all had many traits (some I even wanted to hit through the screen!) it was a fantastic 3 book series.
This was a quick and easy read. The storyline is interesting and I love books about the friendship between groups of men. Can't wait to read the second book and continue reading about Brody and his group of friends!
Good start to a new series. Some problems as to where Brody's girlfriend went and if she's not coming back, why introduce. I like the storyline as it started and wait to see where it goes.
Loved this book. I liked that all the characters are different and in real life just about any of us would have these same opinions including actions. Not everyone is a hero and most of us would be just trying to survive each day.
This is a page Turner. Great storyline, shows how dreams are changed when the reality of life takes over. It's great for showing how age will help you realize just what you might do if you were in this situation.
What's scary is that it appears that this very scenario could bear fruition. Although, the characters had to take some drastic steps to stay safe, I have a feeling that it would be a lot worse. Still, tip was worth a read. Kudos
