A brutal portrayal of the life of those forced to live on the absolute margins of the rural society in India. Gurdial Singh puts together an aching portrait of the deep anger at the injustice of everything, of despair and loss, and of the failure of India to pull its most vulnerable out of their misery.

A masterpiece indeed!
This book raises the poignant emotions of the Scheduled Class society in rural Punjab, their connection with the rich farmers under whose supervision they spend their generations, working in their fields, which somehow feels them like their own. But the coming in generations does not honour the year old relations.

Jagsir is one such helper called Seeri in Punjabi on the field of Dharam singh who was a very close ally of his father, his father's grave, a small mound is built in the field of Dharam singh. As the son of Dharam singh start taking control he turns envious of their bond and decided to throw him away.

its a short, heart-breaking, emotional story.

This book has won a national award and had praises sung about it, but I found it difficult to get in to and frankly boring..

I read the translated version of this and I found it pretty depressing.

The storyline is definitely strong but when it unfolds itself everything seems to be either destroyed or destroying itself which is quite morbid!!

Except for the saddening part the content is strong.

Okay, so I just finished and lemme tell you, it's a whole vibe, but like, a deep one. Dark, real, and makes you think about class, power, and how messed up things can be. 4/5, would recommend if you're down for something heavy.

Book is good,, full of emotions. It shows the struggle of everyday life of people with different situations. I wish I could give it 5 stars, but I’m not a fan of such love stories, the way writer glorifies extra marital affairs. Apart from that, this book can actually make you cry🥺🥺

The novel is quite eyeopening experience of the treatment towards the less privileged by those of privileged. It's an unputdownable read. 🙏🏻🥺

This particular translation by Ajmer S. Roder, doesn't reciprocate well enough to the expression of Gurdial Singh, who is much worthy writer then he comes out in this translation.

So, if you haven't tasted Gurdial Singh yet, then start with his other book called 'Survivors,' translation of which is more attuned with the expression of the writer. If a person happens to start with this books and this translation, he might never pick any other book of Gurdial Singh, and that would a pity not only on the part of reader but also the author.
