Metropolis #3

Owning It

Rate this book
Just out of an eighteen-year marriage, the last thing Jackson expects the first time he visits a gay bar is for a sexy, drunk, twenty-six-year-old twink to mistakenly climb into his Jeep. The twink part he’s good with, the drunk part…not so much. As far as Jackson’s concerned, the boy should come with a warning label. But Derek is not as flighty as Jackson thought…he’s actually pretty incredible. Getting to know the wild, funny man is a breath of fresh air. And when Derek calls him Daddy? Christ, he never thought something like that would feel so right.

Derek has serious daddy issues, and his name is Jackson. He’s stubborn and controlling…and ever since Derek woke up in the silver fox’s condo, he can’t get Jackson out of his mind. Maybe because no matter how many times he throws himself at him, Jackson doesn’t take the bait. And maybe because Jackson is the one person who sees him for who he really is. But Derek loves a challenge, and he’s eager to rock Jackson’s world.

Jackson isn’t interested in a meaningless hookup. He wants the real Derek, not just the sassy jokester everyone else sees. But it’s not easy for Derek to open up. He feels much safer guarding his heart. And Jackson needs to figure out the balance between living for himself and the mountain of responsibilities weighing him down. Derek and Jackson must find the common ground between hookup and commitment—if they can’t own their issues and work together to overcome their faults, they could smother the flame between them that’s just beginning to ignite.

Derek... I loved his book.

I have been wanting this book since Derek first appeared on page in Gary's story. He has stole every scene he has been written in. His personality and presence is bigger than his small build and he always made himself the center of attention. But after reading his story we all know that a lot of that was just a performance deflecting how lonely he was and how much he kept close to his chest. That is until he meets, Jackson. A.K.A. Daddy Jackson...

Jackson is recently divorced and trying to figure out his life as a single bisexual guy. He had been with his wife since he was 16 and has never been with anyone else nor has he ever had the pleasure of exploring his desire for men. Until now. But still he is hesitant. Until a very intoxicated Derek helps himself into Jackson's backseat mistaking it for his Uber ride.

This book has a lot of heart, humor, and family all wrapped up in some good storytelling. I was happy to see Derek's more serious side since he has always been such a over the top character in the other books. I liked how Jackson handled him. They both were able to peel back the layer of walls each had built around them. They had amazing chemistry and heartwarming moments that made me swoon. I adored them together.

It was good catching up with the other couples in this series as well. I can't wait for the next one and hope there are plenty more to come in this series.

If you have been under a rock and missed out on this series I recommend you crawl out from under it and get yourself introduced to the men of Metropolis. They are all a bunch of fun guys that you will no doubt enjoy reading about.

Happy reading dolls! xx

A little bit kinky and a lot hot, Owning It surprisingly proved itself to be the book with the most heart within this fun and sexy series.

In this third installment, we get told the story of how 26 year old, greedy bottom, feisty as fuck Derek, meets and inadvertently falls in love with 37 year old, sexy as hell, daddy-type Jackson, who is a man exploring his bisexuality for the first time after being married to a woman since he was eighteen.

I was so excited to finally get to Derek’s story and thankfully this didn’t disappoint. In the previous Metropolis stories, Derek proved time and time again that he was a force to be reckoned with and a consummate scene-stealer, and most certainly a character I wanted a more focused and in depth story about. As expected, he proved to be much more than a free-spirited, sex-loving, ball of sass, and I came away from this story loving his character even more than when I went in.

Jackson proved to be a solid counterpart to Derek. Together, as a surprise to both them and me, they balanced each other out and clicked in a way that neither man was expecting when they initially began their flirty friendship and (eventually) sexy as sin relationship.

I’ll admit though that the whole daddy kink thing just isn’t my jam, and that’s okay. This one was on the lighter side of the kink scale, and although the continued use of words like 'daddy' and 'boy' served to take me out of the story a time or two, for the most part, I was able to enjoy Jackson and Derek’s friendship and romance in equal measure.

I enjoyed seeing all the past couples as they played significant secondary roles as Derek’s closest friends and beloved make-shift family, and I’m even quite excited over the prospect of getting more stories within this series now that we’ve been introduced to a handful of intriguing fresh faces.

Overall, this story is another fun, fierce and feisty addition to the Metropolis series and I look forward to what may come next.

I still really like this one.

---------------------------

4.25 stars

Oh yes, I really liked this. I have such a soft spot for the man whore who turns a new leaf when he meets someone who sees the real him.

I’ve read a lot of daddy kink books lately, and this had very light daddy kink. Derek liked to call Jackson Daddy and they mostly play around with this dynamic in the bedroom, but other than that, this was very mild. No BDSM or age play.

I haven’t read the other books in the series, but I was glad to see this can be read as a stand-alone. So I hadn’t met Derek before this, but I fell in love with him from the first page.

Derek is a bit of a slut. He likes sex, and lots of it. He practically goes out every night and hooks up with at least one guy. When one night he climbs into the car of what he thinks is his Uber, he meets Jackson.

Jackson is a 37 year old divorced man who is finally ready to explore his bisexuality some more. He is very surprised to suddenly find a young man in his car, who’s demanding he take him home. When Jackson tries to tell the guy he is not an Uber driver, the guy passes out on him. So Jackson decides to take him home since the guy obviously can’t take proper care of himself.

When Derek wakes up the next day he is trying his best to be his fun, flirty self when he sees the guy who brought him home. He wants a daddy like Jackson to ‘take care’ of him alright.

But Jackson sees the real guy under the flirty armor. He sees a young man of 26 who is used to being noticed because of his looks. And that’s why he turns Derek down when he tries to get in his pants.

Derek feels rejected when he can’t get the hot guy into bed, but after tricking Jackson into giving him his phone number, he goes home anyway.

It is several weeks later that Jackson sees Derek again. Jackson didn’t expect to see him at the assisted living facility his mother lives in, but there Derek is, doing magic tricks with the residents. Jackson knew there was more to Derek than he wants people to know, and this confirms it. Now all he needs to do it convince Derek to give him a chance…

I was a bit scared this was going to have a lot of push and pull since Derek seemed like a handful. But I was happy to see that wasn’t the case. Derek didn’t know what to make of Jackson, but he went along with it anyway. And I loved that Jackson took sex off the table at first, to let Derek know he was more than just a good lay.

When I did get to the sexy parts… holy cow, my pants caught fire! The sex scenes were very sexy and it’s been a while since I did not skip at least one sex scene because they bored me a bit. But not here. These guys were smoking once they got going.

There is some angst near the end, but it didn’t bother me all that much because it felt real and not fabricated like in so many other books.

This was a sweet, sexy, read and I loved it.

I was really into this in the beginning. It started out great and I thought I was going to get some good Daddy kink. Sadly, my interest started to wane. I don't know why...it had a lot of things I like: hot daddy, cute and funny twink, hot sex scenes, the writing flowed. But something was just missing. I also hated that they both always expected it to end. I don't know...I think I never felt like Derek fully revealed or resolved his issues. Honestly, I just can't put my finger on why it wasn't better for me.

I enjoyed this much more the second time around than the first. But, my original critiques still apply.

Original ebook review May ‘17:
Underwhelming.

I'm not sure if I liked this book or not. I liked the first in the series; LOVED the second. I had been looking forward to Derek's story since he intrigued me in the first two books. This one, however left me wanting.

The Plot:
Derek stumbles into Jackson's Jeep thinking it's his Uber ride. Derek wants sex, Jackson (just out of an 18 year marriage) wants to know him first. Conflict: Derek believes everyone will leave him; Jackson wants to take care of everyone, is not out to his son, age-gap. Not much of a plot, really. This book is more angsty and less fluffy than the previous two. Big daddy kink and age-gap in this one which worked for me in a very nice way!

The Characters:
We've met Derek as a secondary character in the first two books. He's very obnoxious in this one, especially at the beginning, and I was not into his sex talk--it actually felt crass, maybe that was the point, but it was just too much. At times, however, I liked him. I'm not sure how the authors divided up the writing, but Derek's voice and tone felt off and inconsistent. I cared for him, but I didn't care for how he was written, if that makes any sense.

Jackson, 37 year old, bisexual paramedic, was a better written character than Derek. He annoyed me at times with his hot/cold behavior about wanting sex and wanting to know Derek. Sometimes, I couldn't see what attracted him to Derek--other times I could. Again, this felt like inconsistency in the writing more than anything. He was a pretty hot daddy and really got into it--this part of him I loved!

The Heat:
The sex was HOT!!!!! The dirty talk worked for me here completely! Daddy Jackson and his boy really got it on--and I love daddy kink! (Also, be prepared to read the word 'hole' over and over and over).

The Writing:
This felt rushed, constricted, and uneven to me, as stated above.

Overall:
I like this series, they are good quick, hot reads. I will read more. I was just disappointed this one since I've come to expect better from these authors.

Like the previous two books this had some fun, a lot of sass, and a good dash of dirty smexy, making it a consistent win.

Derek is the life of the party as he’s always looking for a hookup, always looking for a very good time. What he hides under that party persona is a guy who just wants someone special to call his own but who’s too afraid to let anyone in. When Derek gets into Jackson’s car thinking he’s his uber driver, he never would’ve imagined that something wonderful would come of it.

Jackson is the complete opposite of Derek. Responsible, stable, the caretaker of everyone in his life - he’s got a lot on his plate and though he’s been through a recent amicable divorce, he barely has the time nor the inclination to try out the other side of his bisexuality. When literally mischief falls into his lap, Jackson sees right through Derek’s veneer of fun superficiality and makes it a point to get to know the guy. What Jackson finds is someone with depth but who's also perfect for showing him the ropes, if you know what I mean. *wink*

For lovers of daddy kink, this just might be your jam. I’m not even close to being a connoisseur (it’s not my cup) but I don’t think many will be disappointed. Though a whopping 400 plus pages, this went down pretty easily. What Hart and McCormack excel at with this Metropolis series is that in and amongst all the hot gay singles finding their true love, there’s dashes of emotional gravitas, but never prolonging unnecessary melodrama. Let me tell you, I appreciate that a whole fucking lot. This has some ups and some downs, the obligatory roadblock that gets in the way of our MC’s happiness (although very briefly), with lots and lots of explicitness to satisfy most (though honestly, I could've gone with less use of the word “hole”, seeing as how it’s said 40 times).

Anyhoo. Consistent sexy fun.

The Metropolis series has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for me. Although Working It (book 2) wasn’t my favorite, I knew that I would read Derek’s book because I’ve loved his character since book one and his story didn’t disappoint.

Owning It is:

-Full of heart
-Humorous
-Fantastic relationship development (the biggest highlight of the book for me). How it started and how his and Jackson’s friendship blossomed into deeper feelings.
-Fleshed out characters
-Sexy
-It has a smooth pace
-Alternating POVs
-And the end was a sweet HEA.

Can you read it out of order… I think so, kind of. I mean technically you can but to fully comprehend all of Derek’s layers it’s best to read at least Faking It (book 1). Also, towards the end, a storyline from a previous book will come back, but the authors did an excellent job giving readers a quick rundown.

Easily my favorite of the series and one I highly recommend. 5 Stars.

I have to admit that Derek was my favorite character of this series so to see him find Daddy Jackson was just about more feels than my wee heart could stand.

I will advise you dear reader that you should set aside to read this book in one go because you aren't going to want to put it down until you read the words The End. So consider yourselves warned.

The feels of this book were so amazing. You get to see behind the mask of both our MC'S and whether or not you know a Daddy Jackson in your real life he's the kind of man you want if you don't have one and makes you grateful for the one you have if you do. The same can be said of the love and light that Derek provides to this rainbow hued heaven. Together they are a compilation of strength, love and determination but it coupled nicely with wit and sass that will make you laugh. (Sorry that rhyme was unintentional) Click the buy now..then enjoy!

Well done Devon and Riley..now get busy writing Evan and Frankie's story those two need it ;-)

That character in the series. There's always one. You know who he is. The joker, the attention-getter. Everyone's waiting for his book. For his moment in the spotlight. Well, this is it! Derek got his own book, his own Daddy Jackson, and his own happy.

And, wow, was it worth the wait! Riley Hart and Devon McCormack wrote a great story with characters that pulled me in from word one. They gave flighty Derek and staunch Jackson life, humor, and depth. Give me camp, laughs, and fun, but give me MORE. Give me scenes that make me laugh but scenes that tug at my heart and make my eyes water.

If that isn't enough, Derek and Daddy Jackson were explosive when they finally hit the sheets. It took a bit, but even then, holy hell, was it worth the wait. There were MANY moments of face-fanning, folks. They were HOT.

Playboy Derek and serious Jackson are the perfect complement to one another. Each with their own lessons to learn, it was a joy to watch Derek evolve into the person I knew he could be, and to watch grown-up Daddy learn how to live life for himself.

Owning It is the best from this team since Weight of the World, in my opinion. From the moment Derek "stumbled" into Daddy Jackson's life, he was hooked. And so was I. Congrats, guys. This one's a winner. And with the little clues that have been dropped, I have to say, I'm already waiting (quite impatiently) to see what you do with the next one!

Derek has become a fan favorite character of the Metropolis series for good reason. He's the life of the party. Smart, snarky, loyal, and, at times, fierce. Most of these qualities are defence mechanisms, designed to keep virtually anyone from getting close. We all have our secrets, and Derek employs these traits to keep his hidden.

Enter Jackson, freshly out of a long-term marriage and out of the closet. Burdened by an overwhelming sense of obligation to his family, Jackson is in desperate need of some levitivity in his life.

The two meet in the most unconventional and hilarious of ways, and are pulled together like polar opposites of the same magnet.

While most writers will take the discovery of secrets, and use it to tear characters apart, Riley and Devon use them to strengthen the relationship. It's a refreshing change from the norm. That's not to say that there aren't problems, because there are. But every one of them is true to who Derek and Jackson are as characters. We can all relate to the "love and lost" , making Derek very anti-relationship. And we all want someone like Jackson in our lives, someone that will stand beside us through life's many trials. These two fit together like two giant puzzle pieces to make a perfect picture.

I’m gonna be honest, I never liked books with power bottoms or overly slutty twinks. They are always the same, repeating over and over how slutty this person is, how shallow and super fabulous. But wait we discover they are tortured souls with a heart of gold. Honestly we get it.
I don’t like Daddy and Boy relationships; those two were 26 and 37. Not for me.

When the word "Epilogue" appeared I sighed in relief. I wonder if the narrator was relieved too.

I love Derrick and this book did not disappoint, the connection was there from the beginning between Derrick and Daddy Jackson.

The sex was hot and dirty just my kind..

"Yes, please." As the words escape my lips, I hear the need in them. The hunger. The desire.
"Beg for it. Ask your daddy like a good boy."
"God, just don't talk like that because I'm going to fucking shoot."
"Say it."
"Daddy, please let me ride it."

I have enjoyed this series, i wouldn't mind reading more.

This series is getting better and better. I'm glad I gave it another chance after the dissapointing first book.
Got to love power bottom Derek. And I loved daddy Jackson. They are perfect for each other. Lots of kinky sex of the daddy/boy variety for these two.
We are also introduced to the next couple and I cannot wait for Evan and Frankie's story.

This is the 3rd book in the super fun and sexy Metropolis series...I totally enjoyed this book..I've been waiting, impatiently, I might add, for Derek's story since we met him in book 1, and it does not disappoint. Derek and Jackson, both a little broken in their own ways and so different from one other, literally fall in to each other's laps and what starts out as a tentative friendship, becomes so much more. The authors have once again brought the feels and fun banter back to Metropolis...not to mention the schmexy times...There is no way you won't fall in love with Power Bottom Boy Derek and Daddy Jackson!! I highly recommend you read the first 2 books of this series before you embark on this one. You'll enjoy it even more and better understand the dynamics of the supporting characters and trust me, you'll absolutely adore them al!!

Best one of the series so far!

I liked this one the best out of the three. Why? Because they got to know each other first before they fucked! Thank the heavens for Daddy Jackson's decisions.

I liked them both. Jackson is just that DILF that everyone would want. Likes his job, great with his family, responsible, has a big..... Heart. Also has a big
As I said above, his decisions in the story made the whole thing a lot better and much more satisfying than the rest of the series. It's like Faking It and Working It were warm ups to get to this point.

I didn't expect this but I related to Derek the best among all the MCs in this series so far. His "funny and carefree" facade to cover up his loneliness is so relatable to me. If you ever heard that comedians/funny people are some of the loneliest people in the world, it's kinda true. There are times that I feel sad when I'm alone, wondering if all I only have is myself. Just like what Derek feels. I haven't met my Jackson yet but I'm hopeful! :)

Another thing that I liked is how much fluffy it is. Yes Derek and Jackson calling each other Daddy and my Boy is hot and sexy. The Hurricane nickname is a little corny. But I like their light moments the best.

Like Working It, I don't really have dislikes in this book. But if I have to point something out, But it's just a nitpick. I'm fine with everything that happened.

4.5 STARS!

Owning It is book 3 in the Metropolis series. While I enjoyed books 1 & 2 this book didn't work for me at all. I found the story boring and while I have enjoyed Derek and his sexuality I found he acted to desperate for Jackson in the beginning. I understand that all his actions are suppose to hide the lonely, lost boy but it didn't work for me. Jackson was ok but his constant thoughts about the age difference started to get on my nerves and honestly the whole Daddy thing just felt weird to me. So while I'm on the topic of Daddy sorry to say the sex felt like a bad porn. Although this one didn't work for me I would read more in this series.

I loved Bottom Boy and his Daddy.

Derek finally finds love with newly divorced EMT Jackson after mistaking his Jeep for an uber. They both want each other, but Jackson "forces" a friendship on Derek before he's willing to give him the D.

Despite the nickname, there's only mild daddy kink/role play.

Devon and Riley have another winner in this book 3 of the Metropolis series.
We have 3 best friends and have had stories where 2 of them have found love. That now leaves 1 and now it is Derek's turn. Ok Derek has to be my favorite so far. He comes across as this fun loving twink but underneath it all ,he has his issues.
Derek loves his friends and loves to party. If it was up to him he would be out every night finding a new guy to go home with but we learn that is getting old for Derek, he wants what his friends have but he won't admit it.
Jackson is a new character and we met him at the very end of book 2 when he walked into Cory's tattoo parlor.
One night when Derek gets so drunk he doesn't know what he is doing, he winds up in the back of Jackson's jeep. Jackson doesn't know what to make of Derek at first but decides to help him out and take him home.
The next day Derek is confused on what happened with Jackson and wants to thank him for taking care of him for the night. Jackson is a 37 year divorced dad and is on his own for the first time and wants to experience life as a bi man for the first time. You can tell that Jackson is a genuinely nice guy who takes care of his family and just wants someone for himself. He works hard and hasn't had any time to go out and have fun. When he goes to a club for the first time, Derek winds up in the back of his jeep. He decides to be the good guy and take him home to sleep it off. When Derek wakes up the next morning all he wants to do is have sex with Jackson, Derek is 26 and Jackson is 37 so he feels that he can be his daddy. When Derek flirts with Jackson and calls him Daddy and Jackson calls him kid, it will make you laugh .
These 2 men are a opposites attract story but they find out that in the end they have a lot in common. I love that Jackson wants to find out more about Derek besides that he likes to have sex. Derek is afraid to let anyone near him and tries to figure out what Jackson's game is. I think they grow as friends before they jump into anything else. Derek is used to sex and not used to anyone caring about him but Jackson shows him they can have both.
Jackson had a lot of responsibilities he has to deal with and for him being with Derek is easy. They have fun and their chemistry is seriously hot to read. I sure can tell that Devon had a hand in these scenes.
Their affair turns into something more and both men have to really work through some issues to get the HEA they both deserve.
All in all this is a great story that is well written by both authors and I am hoping this isn't the end of Metropolis!..

Owning It is the 3rd story in the Metropolis series by Riley Hart and Devon McCormack. This story hooked me from the first page. Actually before that. I knew from book 1 in this series that I wanted Derek's story.

Derek and Jackson were complete opposites. Between their age gap, different life styles and personalities you would think this relationship wouldn't work but it is true what they say, opposites attract. Jackson gave Derek something Derek felt he never had, someone he could count on and trust. With Derek's easy-going attitude, he taught Jackson to relax, unwind and finally be able to discover himself and his true passion.

I love how this relationship progressed. Flirty, fun and sexy without sex until after 50%! It needed that or Derek would've just treated this like his other hookups. The slow burn just made their inevitable sex that much hotter. Let me tell you when Daddy Jackson took care of his Power Bottom boy it lit the pages on fire. Wow!

As much as I loved the other two stories, this by far was my favorite. The chemistry and depth Derek and Jackson had was felt in my bones. There was so much heart too. I can't recommend it enough. .

This is my fave of the series now.

Derek was just an unstoppable breath of fresh air and made me laugh form beginning to end.Jackson also won me over with his loyalty and dedication to those he loved.Especially with the way he refused to treat Derek like how everyone treated him.

Like the other books in the series, this was a steamy one once they finally got into it. I never really got Daddy kink before this but I now get it ;).

If there is another book, I'm sure it's so obvious that it'd be about Frankie and Evan...AND I'm here for it!

Fave of the series

Love love love. Derek and Jackson were perfect together, and I just loved seeing them both get their HEA.

The writing was flawless, the chemistry explosive and the characters well developed. It really does seem the more Riley & Devon co write together, the more they mesh. Dynamic duo for sure.

ETA: this book is EXCELLENT in audio! Derek is completely brought to life by the perfect narration and he and Daddy Jackson together are just beyond hot! Highly recommend books narrated by Michael Pauley, I haven’t been disappointed by him yet!

I LOVED this! Hands down, my favorite of the series! I have adored Derek since we first met him in the first story, and I LOVED him and Daddy Jackson together.

Derek is much more than he lets people think he is - he hides his pain, his insecurities, behind a facade of happy party boy, Daddy crazed bottom, and he's OK with his friends thinking that's all he is. Jackson sees past that immediately, and sees the wonderful person he truly is. And I just loved them falling for each other and both getting to experience that fall together.

They were sweet, very sexy, and fun. They really brought out the best of the other when they were together. I knew there'd be some set backs and some conflict, but I just adored this story. My favorite, for sure!

3.5 for this sweet read. I enjoyed the characters and the whole community of friends. I really liked Jackson but wondered how he was such a perfect sexual partner based on his lifetime experience. He was the perfect Daddy in lots of ways but had a serious martyr complex going on ! Derek was an interesting soul- so forward and pushy with Jackson but definitely guarded about his true emotions and feelings. This was fun, cute and light in most moments. An enjoyable series that’s pretty low angst.

Ah, I loved this book. It's the best one in the series by far and certainly the one I was looking forward too the most. Derek just has this... mouth. And absolutely no filter. I knew that his book was going to be a blast. All the background knowledge you got from the previous two books was basically that Derek was a no-commitments kinda guy who doesn't talk about his feelings and basically just wants to be sitting on somebody's face 24/7. Well, no, scratch that, too much commitment. He wants to sit on multiple faces.

I knew that getting into this one was going to be like a dam breaking. Derek had protected his heart for so long from the unpredictability of "long term" and "monogamous" that he almost didn't know how to handle himself when it came time to be serious about something. And Jackson was definitely that something.

These two had a rocky start and Derek offered to blow Jackson before knowing his name multiple times. The minute he laid eyes on his not-uber-driver, he climbed feet first into the front seat, started calling him Daddy, and refused to leave his side. He played it up around everyone like he didn't need commitment but he really just wanted a loyal lover to come home to every night and pound him into the sheets. It's not like he was asking for much.

Jackson, on the other hand, has always been Mr. Relationship. Recently divorced, he headed out to the club one night trying to get back into hooking up and he especially wanted the chance to get to know men. He'd gotten married at such a young age that he never had the chance to be with another man, but now that he was free, it was finally his chance. He had no idea his life was going to change that night when a little hurricane climbed into his back seat and refused to call him anything but Daddy.

It was a real struggle for Jackson and Derek. They had their ups and downs, and Jackson had a family that he had to think about where Derek just had himself. They both had their demons to come to terms with and it took a lot of compromise on both of their parts to make it work, but they managed to pull it together in the end.

This one was by far my favorite of the series and it was such a rollercoaster. I don't know if there are plans to add more books to this series, but I'm not sure Derek's story can be beat. I don't know. I hope I'm wrong, though. This was a pretty good series right from the start and the books got better with each new release. I would definitely recommend the series, but you do have to start from the first book. When I started reading this series, I guess I zoned out when I read the first book and completely forgot I read it, so when I started reading book two I was very confused and didn't follow what was happening, so I had to go back and reread the first one. Yeah, not a good idea. I would recommend just starting with the first book and reading them back to back.
