This wonder little collection was one of my favorite books growing up…which explains a lot. It’s still in my house though the cover is missing as are a couple pages from over a decade of love. If that’s not a testament to its excellence I don’t know what is.
Có thể do dịch ko hay nữa.
If more people could read editions like this as children, they'd enjoy Shakespeare more when they got older. The plots are much easier to understand for young readers, yet the writer keeps the comedic timing and drama or the original plays. She also sprinkles original lines throughout so that they'll recognize allusions like, "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes."
This kid-friendly book features 6 of his most iconic plays: Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night Midsummer Night's Dream, The Scottish Play, and Hamlet. Each abbreviated-ish plot gives a mostly kid-friendly storyline, character profiles, quotes from the play (good for 3rd grade reading level) *Also includes a biography of Shakespeare's life, his works, and gives creative insight into his storytelling; Also includes links to Usborne website and additional reading suggestions
This book is a wonderful and gentle way to introduce Shakespeare. My kiddos loved it. We have used it several times to when we needed to remind ourselves who the characters were in the play.
Romeo and Juliet are a a couple from the 2 families that hated each other. Their families were the top 2 richest family in Verona, Italy. Romeo loves Juliet, Juliet loves Romeo. But Juliet was about to marry Count Paris and she doesn't want to but her family wants her to. Juliet's brother killed Romeo's friend so Romeo stabbed Juliet's brother so now he's got kicked out of town. What are they going to do because later she'll marry Count Paris.
Hamlet
Hamlet is a prince in Denmark but the king (Hamlet's father) didn't stayed for long. Hamlet saw a ghost, the ghost is his father. His father said that he wants to revenge his brother (Hamlet's uncle which now married Hamlet's mother), because he's the one who poisoned him. So now Hamlet tries everything to kill his uncle so now he must avenge.
Illustrated Stories From Shakespeare is a picture book anthology based on William Shakespeare and retold by Rosie Dickins, Anna Claybourne, Lesley Sims, Conrad Mason, and Louie Stowell and is illustrated by Christa Unzner-Fischer, Jana Costa, and Serena Riglietti. Historically, today is considered William Shakespeare's birthday (23 April) – he would have been four hundred and fifty-four today if he still lived. So I thought it would be apropos to read this book today.
The authors summarized six Shakespearean plays extremely well and rather faithfully into modern English and making it age appropriate, without losing the spirit – the "je ne sais quoi" that is William Shakespeare, which I thought would be next to impossible to do. I am extremely happy that they kept some of William Shakespeare's more famous quotes and soliloquies intact and italicize to show that it was written by The Bard, himself. The six plays that this anthology tackles are: Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and The Tempest.
The illustrations are also done extremely well – I'm not sure if its period accurate, but it seems that way. I liked how they done the Dramatis Personae at the beginning of each play – not only do they list the major characters, but they show an illustration on how they look like too. The illustrations are done really well, bright and colorful, and reminiscent of watercolor paintings. It gives a surreal feeling to each and every play, which I really like because plays are generally needed to be seen or at least depicted to get the full effect of what the playwright wanted to convey.
There is also a concise and rather accurate mini-biography of William Shakespeare himself at the end, which is rather helpful and much appreciated. It also provided links for further reading of the Bard himself. It is a brief biography, but a good one nevertheless – it gives an informed biography of the man behind the plays.
All in all, Illustrated Stories From Shakespeare is a wonderful collection of summarisation of six of The Bard's most popular plays with equally wonderful illustration accompanying them. It is a wonderful introduction for anyone to William Shakespeare and his plays.
This book lets me understand the plays William Shakespeare wrote because it uses modern language to tell the story. Before a story starts, the characters would always be introduced, described with a relationship with another character, so it would be clear to the readers what was or would be happening. The book would sometimes include quotes from the original play, and I could figure out the main meaning of them because I know what is going on in the story. It includes very well-drawn pictures that show me what the play would've looked like during Shakespeare's time, and the costumes the actors would've worn. Aside from the top plays and detailed drawings, the book also has a part called "The Life and Times of William Shakespeare", which helped me to understand him and his stories, as well as a small part of history of the 1560s to 1610s.
We loved this book. What a fun and easy way to introduce kids to Shakespeare, especially for homeschool families. The illustrations are beautiful. There are some pictures, in Hamlet and Macbeth, that could be a little scary for younger kids, but all of my kids enjoyed reading this book out loud. I also really appreciated that the authors included lines from Shakespeare’s original plays so that you get a taste of what the plays sound like. These stories are written in modern English to make the stories easily understandable for kids, but the inclusion of those original lines gives a taste of old English, which we loved. We also really enjoyed that they included a biography on Shakespeare’s life and background on how and why he wrote his plays at the end.
A wonderful collection of six retellings of William Shakespeare's best-loved plays -- a perfect mix of comedy, tragedy, magic and romance, retold for younger readers. Full of colourful illustrations from the Usborne Young Reading Programme.Age 7+ The stories of six of Shakespeare's best-loved plays, beautifully retold and illustrated for children growing in reading confidence. Includes Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest as well as a short biography of the bard himself. Each story is introduced with a summary and pictures of the characters. With internet links to websites where children can listen to extracts from the plays and find out more about William Shakespeare.
I got this with the hope of reading it with my children so they could understand the basic stories of some of Shakespeare’a greatest works but I didn’t end up reading it to them! I enjoyed it MYSELF. Which is maybe silly but I loved the colorful illustrations and learned much of what I had forgotten even though I have read the plays and seen the movies. It was probably intended for children but I liked it for me :) I consumed it in a day which is not like me since I get about a thousand interruptions an hour!
A colorful collection of six of William Shakespeare's plays: "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Hamlet", "Macbeth", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Tempest", and "Twelfth Night". This is a great introduction to Shakespeare for young readers. At the end of the book there is a brief biography of Shakespeare with a list of his works.
I enjoyed 'Twelfth Night' the best but other tales were equally amazing including 'Macbeth', 'Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Rome and Juliet'. I'm 21 and I wanted to get started off with Shakespeare but wasn't able to so this was the best way. Of course, some may call me crazy but it's better to at least read something in some way than not read Shakespeare at all 🤷🏼♀️
What fun to re-read the tales of Shakespeare! Each story starts with a short summary, a description of the characters, a map. The book ends with a synopsis is Shakespeare’s life and internet links to tour Shakespeare’s home and early Dayan Beautiful watercolory illustrations. A fun way to review what you know, share with children or get acquainted with some of Shakespeare’s stories.
This was a fun way to introduce the works of Shakespeare. The illustrations were fun and the play summaries were easy to understand. I liked that some original lines were on the pages in italics. Romeo and Juliet is still my favorite. It was my daughter's favorite too. :)
I really like this book for many reasons. one because the words are expressive, second because they write actual lines written by Shakespeare. Naturally, I really like Shakespeare especially his topics.
I think this is a nice introduction to Shakespeare for kids... they've majorly simplified the stories, but it gives you a general idea of the characters and the plots, and the kids enjoyed it being read out loud to them.
It’s very well done, but be aware it still includes several suicides in some plays (accurate to the source materials). There is illustrated blood. There are plays included that are still enjoyable to younger children that might find the other plays a bit more geared towards the 12+ age range
I loved how it was all saily, and um so many monsters and so many dead people, and Greek myths. I liked how Gods were coming down and I liked how Poseidon was in it. Thank you for watching the review.
