Talon is King of the Picts, forefathers of the Highlanders, a fierce warrior, and he needs to find a queen. He need not care for this woman and it would be preferable if he didn’t. She need only bear him an heir thereby securing his reign. With his enemies mounting, war looming, and unrest among his people, he needs no distractions.
Hemera does not mean to vex King Talon at every turn or to test his temper and patience. She is grateful that he took her and her sister in when they escaped the Northmen. She does her best not to annoy the King, a difficult, if not impossible task. Then he kisses her and changes everything.
With enemies at the stronghold gates, traitors within, and secrets yet to be revealed, King Talon and Hemera face insurmountable obstacles that only true love can conquer.
The King & His Queen 'The King & His Queen' by Donna Fletcher is book Three in the "Pict King" Series. This is the story of Talon and Hemera. We do meet Talon in the first book and Hemera in the second book. Talon and Hemera do meet in the second book and have a little story line. I have loved this series and Ms. Fletcher's books so I would hate to see you miss any of her books but this can be a standalone book. Talon is the King of the Pict but his command has been coming into question due to the fact he has been married twice but has not produced in any heirs. Both wives were let go so that he can move forward in finding a wife that can produce a son/child. His former wives did remarry and have children. So Talon's people are starting to question his future as king. Hemera is the sister in-law to Talon's trusted guard/friend. Talon is under the impression that she is slow minded from the way she acts and talks. But the more he gets to know her the more he realizes that might not be the case. Either way he is having a hard time staying away from her. Hemera likes to be by herself allot to think. The other thing she loves is to be in the woods and work on her garden. Talon works to keep her safe by trying to keep her confined to inside and not go beyond the gates. But Talon is finding that Hemera lives by her own rules. I truly wish I could put into words how much I enjoyed this book. From reading the other books I had slowly and painfully waited for this book to come out. Talon is the strong Alpha male who is trying to understand his growing feelings for Hemera. Talon has to struggle with finding a wife that will produce strong children and help him rule over his people. At first, he didn't even think that Hemera would even be someone to consider for that position. Hemera was used to always trying to protect her sister and deal with the hardships that came with that. In addition, she likes to stay to herself and she doesn't see things as others do. But she does start to have and attraction to Talon. Hemera knows that she will never be his Queen and not just because he wouldn't consider it but because she wouldn't want to give up her freedom that she has now. I highly recommend this whole series and wish that there was a higher rating that 5 Stars for this book and the series. I read all 3 in this series in a weekend. Really quick, fun reads - takes you away to another time and place. Complex characters, but in a good way (if that makes sense), and a heavy dose of steamy fun.
This story was ok. I had no interest in Talon since he was a huge dick in every book. I could care less if he gets an HEA. But this series has been good so I read on..... The entire book he goes around giving demands and declaring he's king to everyone ( like they don't already know that🙄). And goes around threatening everyone, including his friends and their wives 🙄 for not obeying his every utterance. This girl gets kidnapped or finding trouble from the woods she's constantly running into, like every other chapter 🙄 But I still liked the story enough. ( I know it doesn't sound like I did, but I did 🤣)
This was a very satisfying ending to the series. Talon and Hemera had a good story. I liked them both a lot and I'm super happy for them. There were quite a few editing issues. But overall, I liked it. Happy reading!
OMG, this book was L-O-V-E-L-Y!! I loved every bit of it. It had it all - a cold and alpha hero, a cool heroine who didn't care what people maDe of her, she just was herself, action, mystery, romance, Oh the romance (sighing ...!), a heroine with super powers - yess!!! and an adorable epilogue! Please, read this book people!! It was THAT kind of awesome! LOL :D This was the first book I read of the author and I'm so reading her other titles. ;)
What a great series this is wish there was more of this series.. Well done Donna Fletcher! What great story and characters. Loved Talon and Hemera's story, such love!! Sorry to come to the end of it. Loved all the characters in every one of this series. Highly recommended.
Talon is the Pict King, he is a fair and fearsome warrior who has done the impossible by uniting the Pict tribes, but to secure his position he must marry and sire an heir. He has married twice and neither wife conceived with him, nor have any of the women he frequently beds. His former wives have been remarried and are both pregnant by their new husbands, leading his people to believe that Talon is not able to father children.
Hemera is the sister of Verity (the heroine in The King's Warrior), she was introduced to us in the previous book and portrayed as a little slow-witted. But in reality, she is anything but slow - she is incredibility observant and sees more than she lets on. She knows people think she is slow, but she uses that to her advantage. She annoys Talon more than any woman he has ever met, she does not obey him, she challenges him constantly and is more alluring to him than she should be.
While awaiting the arrival of his new bride, Talon becomes aware of a traitor in his midst and he is shocked to find that Hemera is aware of the plot and is actively trying to find out who is involved. Slowly, Talon begins to see the real Hemera and his desire for her grows.
They begin a secret affair and the more time they spend together, the more they want. But with so many things working against them and the misconceptions people have about Hemera, it doesn't seem possible for them to be together.
The book completely wraps up the series and ties up all the loose ends from the previous books, but it could easily be a stand alone title. The writing is wonderful and the story flows at a good pace, there are steamy love scenes, a few graphic fight scenes, some shocking secrets, some lovely surprises and enough twists and turns to keep you reading and on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see what Ms. Fletcher comes up with next!
King Talon and Hermera's story. Enemies and war are coming while King Talon still hasn't found his Queen. Hemera doesn't mean to vex the King, after all, he has provided her with a home and safety. But somehow she annoys him at every turn. But as he learns more about her, it seems she may be exactly who he needs.
I really love this one.. It's definitely one of my favorites of Donna Fletcher's books. Hemera is such a great and interesting heroine, sweet, wise and just a little spooky. And Talon is totally book boyfriend material. All hail the gruffy, sexy, fierce and protective (and some times sweet) alpha! Oh yeah, total package.. Also I love the touch of paranormal that runs through this trilogy. I adore it when authors do that, write a book in a specific genre, like historical romance or romantic suspense then add just a dash of paranormal into the story. 😊
I loved this entire series, this book in particular was my favorite. Both main characters were very fun to read about, but I especially loved the heroine who was very funny and an unlikely match for the hardcore hero.
The only thing I can say is that the main plot that ran throughout the series was very weak and not well developed. The author hyped the virility, strength, and possible curse that might lead the hero to be a badass manwhore and yet nothing was explained. The author utilized the fact that the hero liked to have sex all the time with many women as maybe being a part of a curse. When the heroine from the first book met the giantess in the first book, she hinted at a curse for the hero of the third book. However, this is never addressed and the whole plot seems to disregard it, the curse is never mentioned again. I think this book could have easily been five stars but the author seemed to have lost momentum by the time she got to the end of the series. The villain was basically unknown and very underdeveloped, I had to actually do some research to find out who he was, because I literally forgot him.
King Talon desperately needed a Queen and an heir as his people were questioning his abilities as their King. He had two wives before who he couldn’t sire children with who were now remarried and pregnant. The King was under a lot of pressure to make a contract with a strong woman who could give him children. While he waited for the Queen to be to arrive, King Talon realized there was a woman in his kingdom that wasn’t what she seemed. The more he got to know her the more he realized she would make a wonderful Queen. However, there were forces at work to take the throne away from him and destroy the woman who had become to mean the world to him.
Finally! I was so excited to get this book in my hands because the first two in this series were just that good. King Talon’s character was in book 1 and book 2 so I had already gotten to know I really, really wanted to know his story. Donna Fletcher know exactly how to make us as readers want to come back again and again for her stories. King Talon and Hemera’s story was strong, interesting, well put together and a great ending to this series. The dialog between Talon and Hemera was so romantic and sweet at times I found myself melting at the thought of such a love. This author did a fantastic job in letting the reader feel just how much these two meant to each other and the bond they shared and how it would never be broken. There is also some very mean, evil characters in this book that always show up in Donna Fletcher’s books which make you want to bite your nails until they get what’s coming to them. I loved this entire series but King Talon is my favorite!
Talon is a powerful king and he needs a wife who can give him heirs because his enemies are already seizing upon his lack of success in this department in order to prove to detractors that he is unfit to rule. But while Talon is focused on this and trying to find out who is trying to overthrow his rule, he's constantly distracted by Hemera. She doesn't listen, she argues with him and he's wildly attracted to her. He has to do something about her before he ends up taking her to bed, because there's no hope for a relationship between them. Hemera is perceived as simple-minded and dull-witted. Talon realizes she's not and that she's actually quite brilliant. But even learning this, and her bravery, there's no way he'd ever be able to take her as his queen, no matter how much he might want to.
Now we have the King's story. Talon has come across as pretty much an asshole in the past two books, but we finally get a personalized version of him - and it's summed up pretty well, with him being both Talon and "the King" - two different personalities. He rarely gets an opportunity to be Talon, but with Hemera, he finally can be. But "the King" could never marry someone so "simple-minded" so they can only be together in secret...but he falls in love with her. And this was played out very well, without all the ruination nonsense or the shame of being a fallen woman. They keep it secret more for his benefit strangely enough... And Hemera, much like the other females in this series, is quite practical and honestly doesn't expect Talon to want to marry her. She's perfectly content with just having sex, and loving him without any commitment. Hemera was a very different character. Today we would probably say she's on the spectrum (while also gifted with paranormal abilities). At times she very much borders on being annoying and being adorably quirky. Even now I can't say which won out, but I imagine that's the point. And probably what draws Talon also. But I did struggle with the moment that Talon decides to reveal his relationship with her and realize he can marry her. He only does this after he learns she's probably pregnant. It's like he kinda wanted to commit to her, but couldn't, then he learned she was pregnant and he had the perfect excuse. It made it feel like less of a sacrifice - as though he didn't have to prove his love at all. Hemera briefly thought about this, but ultimately dropped it and never thought about it again. But I kept remembering it. Would he have sacrificed to be with her if she'd not been pregnant?

Donna Fletcher is one of those authors I have placed on my auto buy read and reread, permanent keeper shelf and has earned a permanent place on my favorite treasure list. She is among of the best authors a reader will have the honor of reading. The King and his Queen is book 3 of the Pict King series. This book is a complete romance filled with unexpected hot, steamy passion, disagreements, mystery, laughter, tenderness, strength, and eventually trust beyond question.
Forefathers of the Highlanders and King of the Picts, Talon, a fierce warrior in his own right, needs to find a queen. The only thing he required of his queen is to bear his heir. Increasing unrest among his people, enemies gaining numbers by the day and with war looming, feelings of fondness or caring between the two was of no consequence. He had absolutely no time for distractions.
Hemera is very grateful to King Talon for taking her and her sister in after they escaped the Northmen. She doesn’t mean to annoy, vex, and test his temper at every turn. It isn’t her intention to test his patience constantly. One kiss changes everything, but with Secrets and traitors and enemies at the gates there are numerous obstacles they must overcome.
When a person thinks of the number of authors today, there is a small percentage of those who have the gift or talent to capture the reader and make them feel as if they are watching the story unfold. Well-developed plots and characters, places, and long-ago times become part of the reader’s world and allow them escape for a while. They will read the last page, sigh, and want to start over from page one, or reach for another book by the same author. I highly recommend this book and anything else written by Donna Fletcher.
☞ This third novel in the Pict King Series does a great job in tying up the loose ends of the two previous stories, but also leaves it wide open for the possibility of more! In addition we are given little glimpses into the H.E.A.s of the other two couples, something I always love to see!
☞ One of my favorite aspects of this series is the uniqueness of the characters. None of them seem to fit into normal society, but they somehow fit perfectly together with their chosen partners and as a larger group. They all have an important skill or quality, which is beneficial to the kingdom as a whole. Everyone of them has a purpose.
☞ Hemera is the perfect queen for King Talon and it doesn't take long for him to realize this! Not only is she strong and intelligent, but Hemera is also incredibly observant. All of these are qualities that King Talon needs in a queen, to help him lead the Picts! They are also the reasons he fall in-love with her.
☞ We were given glimpses of King Talon in the previous novels. He is a strong and ruthless leader who is extremely loyal to his inner-circle and them to him. He has given himself entirely to his people and to keeping his kingdom together. Once he's past his annoyance at Hemera, because of her independent spirit, and falls in-love with her; there is nothing he would not do to keep her safe and make her his queen!
☞ King Talon and Hemera really are the perfect couple! Once they begin to understand one another's personalities more fully, they are able to work together as a team!
☞ The King & His Queen, is much more than just a romance novel between King Talon and Hemera! There are several twists and turns in the plot, some you don't see coming, as all the characters work to save the Kingdom of Pict!
The King and His Queen by Donna Fletcher Pict King Series Book Three Talon, King of the Picts, has unrest in his kingdom. He needs a queen that will give him an heir. Something people are starting to think he cannot accomplish. He has traitors within and besides his faithful friends, Wrath and Paine, he trusts no one. And then there is the problem of Hemera.
Hemera loves her freedom after so many years of slavery with the Northmen. She was given Paine's old home from when he was an executioner and it's plenty far away from others. Everyone thinks Hemera is slow-minded, and that's fine with her, she prefers being alone and in the forest where nature speaks to her.
This is the last book in the trilogy and hated to see it end. I loved all three stories and the unique characters—especially Bog, Paine's wolf. The reader gets to see how Talon is from the previous two books, but he's really so different when you “get to know him” in his own story. **Sexual content http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
I know. Unpopular opinion alert but this book was just okay for me. I love Donna Fletcher but this book couldn't hold my attention. I was able to put it down and come back to it and still put it down. I read this and I realized I missed the first two books in the series and maybe if I read it in order would have liked it better. Just the whole pict thing and the whispering forest and the Giantess and I just didn't love it. Talon was a good king and I liked that they misunderstood exactly how smart Hermera was and she was amazing and sweet and strong. I rate it about a three and a half simply because it is a Donna Fletcher book and was written well. I bought the other two in the series but I don't know if I will ever read them. Paranormal or fantasy or whatever you call it just isn't my cup of tea I guess. It took me forever to get through this one. Sorry.
Excellent! I thought Hemera was a unique and interesting heroine. She was calm, highly intelligent, very observant, sneaky, innocently outspoken, independent, and not one to dissolve into tears easily. I loved how she got under Talon's skin with her antics while he fought his growing attraction to her. The man-whore King fell so crazy in love that he didn't want anyone else. These two were perfect for each other and their love story was beautiful. I loved the first two books in this series, and until I read this one, The King's Executioner was my favorite. The King and His Queen now tops my must read again list. I look forward to reading the rest of Donna Fletcher's books!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.... This books was great! A fantastic conclusion to the trilogy! I liked Talon from the beginning, but really getting to know him in this made his story stronger. In the first, he seems to be larger than life but I love the fact that we get to know him as a person, rather than just the mighty figure he seems. Hemera is a great heroine who makes Talon seem more relatable, and their story is full of twists and turns from the start. You will not be disappointed by this read! I cannot wait to go back and read them all again!!
Loved this one. Loved the crazy banter between the king and his love. Gotta love her kind of crazy. It's a really good story, hot romance with just the right everything to keep your interest. Sorry it ended, just wish there was an audible version! Highly recommend.
I enjoyed the book very much. The couple was very much reminded me of Cree and Dawn in Highlander Trilogy series. Notes for safety gang, it was mentioned in passing that Talon slept with OW after meeting Hemera. This normally would be my pet peeve but it was only mentioned in passing and not in detail. He was totally devoted to Hemera once they got together.
The King & His Queen by Donna Fletcher is Book 3 in her tanalazing series, "Pict King" series. A three book series. While, each book can be read as a stand alone, I'd strongly suggest reading the entire series, it's such an awesome series.
Well written, with engaging characters, and an enticing storyline. Not as much adventure or battling as we have seen in the two other books in this series. More romantic as King Talon and Hemera find their footing and their HEA.
King Talon is King of the Picts, a fierce warrior, forefathers of the Highlanders, he needs to find a suitable queen and make an heir to secure his reign. None of his other wives borne him a child, so most thought him incapable, for all his wives have now borne their new husbands a child. Hermera and her sister, escaped Northmen and was accepted into their King Talon's stronghold. Hermera has a special gift, she also vexes the King at every turn, with her obliant disregard for his orders, not to go outside the stronghold. But she uses her special gift to try to find the traitor, an enemy within the stronghold, which places her, the King, and his people in danger.
Talon and Hermera's story is one of insurmountable obstacles, secrets yet to be revealed that could destroy the blossoming feelings between them, and an unforgettable love. Brilliantly written and masterfully takes the reader through twists and turns, during an Era when life was about chaos, turmoil, change, and danger at every turn. The "Pict King" series is one with intense feelings, strong love, special gifts, and details the rise from Pict to Highlander. Magnificent series!
It is hard to decide of the three which is my favorite, they are all fantastic. The romantic air of "The King & His Queen" is enchanting, filled with danger, a secret that could destroy all and a love that surmises all obstacles, including the traitors lurking within, and an attempt on Hermera's life. Told by an amazing author who gives her readers insight into the workings of the Pict dynasty, the hash winters and the power play between clans. Fans of Historical romance, the Pict dynasty, unforgettable love and romance, will delight with King Talon's story. I have been waiting for his and Hermera's story and was not disappointed. What a delight! Another must read by Donna Fletcher. I received a complimentary copy.
Truly an enjoyable series. I loved all three books. The Pict King books would make a great TV mini series or movie. Ms Fletcher makes you feel apart of that era with her imaginative writing and creative mind.
Talon and his queen were like two pieces of puzzle that fit together would recommend the 3 book series also would like to have seen a novella to see where all the families come together if you haven’t read any of her books you are truly missing out of adventures 👍👍👍
The sacred word of the Pict that very few said or heard. It spoke of enduring, eternal love. The characters that MS Fletcher created found that love. This series has won her a fan for life! This is just so good.
I just loved this whole series. Getting ready to start the next one. I enjoy a good bad guy and some magic so to speak. And tho I am glad I was born now I do like ready about the past.
It wasn’t as good as the Irish Devil but it was a similar time period and I liked the strong female characters and the mystery of who was behind the rebellion. Despite a lot of efforts at security the women were always being attacked and taken!
