The Unexpected Way of Falling

Rate this book
This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN B072NRXJHW.

A full-length novel.

I've had a crush on my best friend's brother for years. Which wouldn't be a problem, if he wasn't such a cocky jerk.

It's okay, though. My crush is based on shallowness, a simple attraction, so my heart isn't at risk of getting broken.

Well, that is until my best friend decides she needs to teach her brother a lesson and take his cockiness down a notch. Her plan: I'll get Carter to fall in love with me and then break his heart. At first I'm not fully on board with her plan, not only because it seems cruel, but I also highly doubt Carter will fall in love with me.

But then Carter does something that pushes me over the edge and I decide to go through with it.
Not only does the plan work, but Carter ends up being different from the cocky jerk I thought he was. At least I think so.

But not everything is as it seems.

Carter has secrets too. Secrets that could ruin my life.

Suddenly, I'm not sure who's playing who anymore.

Please note: this is a romance suspense with a drop of mystery.

I’m worried someone’s heart might get broken.

A bit of a hit and miss for me. I felt like too much was missing to be able to get the real feels I insist upon to be rated a top read. But I'll admit that I'm intrigued by the mysteries surrounding these young adults (they are eighteen and recent high school graduates) and the strangeness that occurs in their lives that hints at mafia ties. I will read the next book, hoping that there will be a lot of 'splaining done.

I have read just about every Sorensen book. She puts her mark on every book: a girl with an edge in fashion who is shy, yet badass with a snarky comeback. This book was no different.

Ensley has been picked on for most of her life, especially by the guy she has crushed on for a decade—Carter. Shy and a social outcast because of her poor background, her self-esteem hits a new low in the third grade when Carter asks her if she’s a boy or a girl. However, out of that embarrassment, she finds a best friend when Carter’s sister, Elodie, tackles him for making fun of the shy girl. Now ten years later, they are high school graduates, when Carter asks Ensley out…

Meanwhile, Elodie, tired of Carter’s arrogant attitude, makes a plan with Ensley to make Carter fall in love with her… just to break his heart. Their plan was doomed from the start since Ensley has been crushing on his forever.

Carter has a secret, though. He’s not who he pretends to be. Furthermore, he has a plan of his own, one that will hurt everyone he cares about.

Jessica Sorensen’s books always suck you in. Her books are well-written with a flow that has you not wanting to put the book down, needing to know what happens next. This one ends with a cliffhanger that has me chomping at the bit to find out what is going to happen next. With Jessica, it can go in so many different directions. You never know what is going to come out of her mind next.

Should be a 3 1/2 stars, but the cliffhanger got me.

(Gotta say, I dont like when a book cover doesn't reflect what the characters physical descriptions are in the book. Carter is blond with a bit of stubble. The dude on the cover had dark hair and a full beard.)

I appreciated this story because I felt compelled by the heroine. She really deserves a good happy ending. And I was surprised by the underbelly of deceit and corruption going on in the hero's life. I guess I was surprised by all that was going that the heroine has no clue about. And you feel sympathy for the hero because he has been holding such a burden on his back for so long. Not even his loud mouthed twin has a clue what's going on in her family.

However there are also many holes in the story. One being that we don't really see any of the supposed teasing or bullying that the heroine went through aside from when she was in 3rd grade. It becomes hard to believe she is traumatized by her best friends twin brother when in the story, he's nothing but kind to her.

However I am really looking forward to where the second book takes this.

Suddenly, I'm not sure who's playing who anymore.

I love Jessica's books! Simple as that.

A little part of my brain tells me that there was a lack of connection between the main characters... BUT... I loved this fantastic book that ended with a spectacular cliff-hanger.

I need more.

Ensley's had a crush on Carter Everlend for as long as she can remember. But Carter is a jerk and he's the reason why Ensley's self esteem is so low. When Ensley's best friend, who also happens to be Carter's twin sister, Elodie comes up with a way to get revenge, Ensley isn't so sure it's going to work. What's the plan you ask? To make Carter fall in love with Ensley. But what if Carter isn't the mean horrible boy Ensley's always thought he was? What if there is a softer side to him and there's a reason why he's been such an asshole? The more time Ensley spends with Carter the more she realizes that this plan will never work because not only is she falling for the boy who has hurt her countless of times but Carter has a secret plan of his own when it comes to Ensley.

Carter really did a number on Ensley's confidence. I hated him at first. I didn't know if he was serious or if he was playing games. The more we got to know him, the more I felt sorry for him though.

Poor Ensley's confidence was broken and torn to shreds and it's all because of Carter. He really did a number on her when he said what he did back in elementary school. The way she would talk about herself was just sad.

But let me tell you, the bickering between Elodie and Carter was hilarious. When she said, “Get the hell out of my room, you dickless, little weenie" I lost my mind. I laughed so damn hard.

Seriously though guys, I'm a HUGE Jessica Sorensen fan! HUGE! It was Jessica who got me back into reading. After my Mom passed, I found myself highly depressed. That's when I downloaded the kindle app and the first book I came across that sounded interesting was The Secret of Ella and Micha. So I have a big soft spot for her stories. I haven't read anything by her in awhile so when I saw this one was on sale for .99, I had to have it. I just love her writing. Everything flows and comes together perfectly. She's a very talented author.

Now I need the second book now! I can't wait to see how this one plays out. I just hope Ensley gets her happily ever after.

MALDITOS CLIFFHANGERS!

Meh. 2ish stars. At least it didn't anger me or make me roll my eyes a lot. Left on a cliffhanger, so now I have to read the next book to find out what happens. It was interesting enough, I guess, to warrant wanting to know the ending. Just one more gripe of mine about many of Sorensen's books. She often stretches a story out needlessly just to make it into a two- or three-book series. This one could easily have been combined into one book, especially considering how short the second book appears to be.

The Plot: Ensley has always been the super-shy girl, filled with bad self-esteem. She comes from a poor single-mother household, and has never known her dad. Her best friend, Elodie, on the other hand, comes from a very rich family, for whom her mother cleans their house. Some of Ens's negative self-image came from the years of teasing she got from El's twin brother, Carter, and his friends. Though he's been a bully, she's always had a crush on him. Graduation comes and goes, and suddenly Elodie feels like her brother needs to be put in his place. She schemes for Ensley to seduce Carter, then when he's fallen for her, dump him to leave his heart broken. For some reason, Ensley agrees to the ridiculous plan. Little do the girls realize that Carter has his own scheme in place.

My Gripes: 1. So much of this book is forced. That's the biggest problem. The plot, the dialogue, all of it. 2. Other parts are just overly written. For instance, if one of the characters thinks something in their head, why do the characters have to say it aloud in the same way? Why not just write it in a way that kills two birds with one stone? Certain things are harped on too many times, or other times it's just once but it drags on too long. You're beating a dead horse. 3. The concept of the book is silly, really. Even so, I went along with it, but the way that it plays out in the beginning made no sense to me: why she agreed to it, all their reasoning. 4. Then the book tries to make the Carter guy seem like everything was a big misunderstanding, that he's not really a big jerk. Okay, some of it was misunderstandings, fine. But so much of it the other times, he was truly a jerk...even if it was for a somewhat understandable reason. Again, so much is forced. You're telling me in the book why I should feel sorry for and care about these characters, but that doesn't mean you're pulling it off. 5. The Gregor thing is making me shake my head. You're trying to make it into this thriller, mobster, clandestine thing. It was a weird thing, and (again) seemed too forced even though it became the whole plot of the book and will be in the second book. 6. I don't like the main character. She's weak, does whatever anyone else tells her to, and one-dimensional as a character. And some of her phrases she says annoy me. I know it's meant to be cutesy and quirky, but it only irritates me.

Okay, I'm done complaining.

Jessica is my girl. She is my angsty author. My anxiety writer. Very rarely do I pick up a book by Jessica Sorensen that I don't like. The same applies for this book. I didn't hate it, it just sort of lacked in the fantastic department for me. But I will be anxiously awaiting her next book in the series.

The cover for The Unexpected Way of Falling in Love is incredible but unfortunately it's a little misleading. They don't look like high school kids to me. I am drawn to more than just the cover though. I like how Jessica puts out these books (and a lot of them) but they are all so different from one another. Her quality is amazing.

My complaint is the pace of the story. If there is going to be a series, I feel as though you can slow things down and space things out for your readers. Just like with Jessica's earlier work. There are a lot of books so her stories are more spaced out and they have an all around nice tempo.

I'll be excited to see where Jessica takes Carter and Ensley's story. With Jessica Sorensen, there is just no telling.

I’ve always been a fans of Sorensen’s work and I’ve the Nova series and loved it, so when I saw that there was a book duet called Unexpected, I knew I had to read it.

Now onto the story, having a crush on your best friends brothers isn’t always a good idea, but I guess sometimes you can’t help it. Now Elodie and Ensley do agree to try and take Carter down and make him fall for Ensley, only things don’t go how they planned and other things come into play. Like Carters own little plan he has going on, which is not good for Ensley at all. Not to mention there are some things about Carters family that even Elodie doesn’t know. It kept me turning the pages to find out more about what all was going on. There is some chemistry that that surfaces there between Ensley and Carter, but I will just leave it at that.

I have to say, I really did enjoy this cast of characters. Ensley, the main character, she has a good head on her shoulders, she’s quiet and shy and completely opposite of her best friend Elodie. And even She been picked on for majority of her life she is still a sweetheart. Elodie and her brother Carter are twins, but they couldn’t be more different. But I really liked both of them. I do think there was a lot more to Carter than the “hot guy all the girls want” vibe that he had going on, but no one really gave him a chance. But at the same time he did have a hidden agenda at the beginning of the book that did make me question him. Now Elodie, she is just the spunky, blunt and a little on the conniving side especially when it came to Carter. But Elodie was always exactly what a best friend is supposed to be.

This does move a fairly fast pace but there is a terrible cliffhanger, so I would definitely recommend having the second book read to go. The not know is killing me right now, so I am off to start book two. Fans of Sorenen’s work will enjoy this and fans of young adult romance will as well. I hope you will give it a try.

Good but not great!

This story at times felt a little drawn out and slow paced. I'm not sure about the main character. He is a cocky ladies man and has not been very nice to girls but all of a sudden he is in love with his sister's best friend and is a gentleman? The characters also seem younger than 18 to me which makes this a great YA book. The story however is intriguing so I'm going to read part 2.
Another reason I only gave it 3 stars is because as much as I love Jessica Sorensen's books I'm getting a little tired of these 200 page books. There are several of her series that could have all been in one book instead of waiting for and buying a series. I have a feeling this may be one of those series.
With that being said this is an easy read and interesting story line worth checking out.

One of the best books I've read in a while. Admittedly there are some grammatical and spelling errors, but Jessica Sorensen has a way of pulling you into their characters. I was not put off by those errors nor did they distract heavily from the reading/story progression. Anyone who is wanting to start this series, just know that there is going to be a drop-off where you'll need to pick up the next book. Not a cliffhanger! One of my only complaints about this book and Sorensen's books in general is they aren't long enough per book, but I will say there was an improvement from her Discovering Zhara series in terms of length.
I highly recommend Sorensen as an author, but especially this series. Pick up your copy today!

Okay so it's a little confusing the when I downloaded the ebook on my kindle it was just called "the unexpected" and on here it's a different title and a different cover. But anyway.

The book is fantastic! I enjoyed the way that I could see both perspectives. The romance is so good. The plot is good. I mean this isn't the most complex book ever written but it doesn't have to be. It's fun and it took these turns i didn't expect and I read the whole thing in a day. I couldn't put it down. The characters on their own were so good and I fell in love with them.

Jessica Sorensen is just amazing. Anytime i find myself in a reading slump one of her books can pull me right out. It's like comfort food in book form and I keep coming back for more.

Beware..it's a cliffhanger!

I was not aware that it was a cliffhanger so that was a bit annoying but I guess if I had read the reviews, I would have known. The story was good, I like the mystery and twists but the on going banter between the characters was a bit much at times. It was witty and funny but it would be placed , sometimes, in the middle of another conversation that would go on for a page or so leaving me lost in the previous conversation. Also, it says it's a full length novel but it was more of a novella.
With all of that said, I really liked the book and (anxiously) waiting for the sequel.

More!!!!

I need the next one now!! So seriously, I started reading this bc I love Jessica's work and it looked interesting. Figured it could pass the time while I'm waiting on her other stuff to come out. Did not expect to DEVOUR this and not want to put it down. I'm so sucked in! I kinda thought I knew where it was going to leave off and was totally thrown off by what actually happened. Like say what?!? So yes it's not the whole story and leaves you hanging. Not like on the side of a cliff hanging for dear life but like shut up that did not just happen, I need to know what comes next. So yea, read it :)

Jessica is a very talented author and I have read many of her books. The title of this book is what caught my attention but when I started reading it I fell. I think she left out a lot of details on purpose. I think she wanted us to be hung up on how Carter treated Ensley in 3rd grade because she was hung up on it. It hurt her deeply and all the other times she felt he was being mean was actually flirting. I feel awful for Carter and all he has and will go through. He seems to be a good guy being forced to being shifty. I hope these two find their way to each other. I have a feeling the road will be long and painful.

The book was not what I expected at all!!!! Girl who’s traumatized by her crush telling her she looked like a boy grows up very insecure. His sister and devices a plan to get back at him by having him fall inlove. Turns out he’s always liked her anyway he asks her out they go on date but it turns out he’s has ulterior motive himself. He does like her but he knows her real father and was asked to bring her to him. I mean again not what I thought but it left me hanging I can’t wait to read 2nd book. His twin sister is fun but a bit annoying with her remarks causing arguments for no reason I found myself sayin “shut up” out loud which means I enjoyed book can’t wait to read the next one

Another one of Jessica Sorensen's books where no one is who they seem to be or even who they think they are.

Ensley has had a crush on Carter since 3rd grade, even though he has never been anything but a jerk to her. El is Carter's sister and Ensley best friend. She comes up with a plan to have Carter fall in love with Ensley and then Ensley break his heart to get revenge. Ensley agrees reluctantly. Carter asks her out on a date, and he does have an agenda, but not the one everyone thinks he has.
He made a deal with Ensley's Dad to get him out of working for his own Dad, who works for the mafia.

Somehow they all wind up on the road along with Carter's friend Holden and another friend Gaige. No one is who they think they are and we don't really know what's going on. It ends on a cliffhanger, but the next one is out.

This is more 3.5 Stars. Just can't give half ones. Let me tell you though, had I realized this was a cliffy, I'd have waited for the next book before reading this one. I felt like I just got into the actual meat of the book, of what is going on and boom, "The princess is in another castle." <--- Yes, I had one of those moments and was just like AHH. So, I guess that says something for how much this one draws your attention in.

Really? A cliffhanger!

Pretty good book but I'm not liking the end and I've been hooked in with this author before with a previous series that has yet to be finished. I do love her writing but not going to lie this kind of makes me mad. It is a good story but who knows if we will get to see the true ending. Unless of course there is another book already out and I'm a moron.
