Kamera drhtavo i potajice kroz prozor bilježi kako Maria Carlsson oblači crne hulahupke.
Lars Kepler is the pseudonym of critically acclaimed husband and wife team Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril, authors of the No. 1 internationally bestselling Joona Linna series. With seven installments to date, the series has sold 13 million copies in 40 languages. The Ahndorils were both established writers before they adopted the pen name Lars Kepler, and have each published several acclaimed novels.
"The word stalker has existed since the early 1700s. In those days it meant a tracker or poacher."
Earlier this year, the fourth book in the Joona Linna series written by married couple Lars Kepler was a smashing success here in the US. You couldn't log onto book related social media and not see it, which of course made me nervous going into it. Typically, once a book has been hyped to high heavens, it almost always feels like a bit of a disappointment, as it is terribly difficult for anything to hold up to such lofty expectations. I was so nervous that I did not even pick up The Sandman until two months AFTER publication because I was so terrified of being the oddball. For once, the hype didn't live up to the actual book; it was SO much better than I had anticipated. After such a winning experience with these characters and a smooth translation that reads like soft butter, I knew I had to read Stalker the moment I got my hands on it, which is exactly what I did.
"Today a stalker is someone who suffers from obsessive fixations, or an unhealthy obsession with monitoring another individual's activities."
If you haven't read The Sandman yet, I would highly suggest doing so before picking this one up. While the first three novels in the series aren't crucial to the following of this one, Sandman has a bit of a continuing storyline that is tied up in Stalker and would make it difficult to go back and read Sandman after the fact due to spoilers. Following in the same vein as its predecessors, Stalker exudes a high stakes tension that drips with violence, erotic sexuality, and emotion. These books are extremely graphic in many ways, and I would caution the more sensitive reader to research a bit further before picking up this series. If gripping thrillers that feature gore and experimental subject matter appeal to you, as they do to me, then you'll find this one worthy of your time.
"Almost ten percent of the population will be subjected to some form of stalking in the course of their lifetime."
We see many beloved, reoccurring characters here, ones from early on in the series and some we are just getting acquainted to. I think this is partially where Kepler's success comes from; the ability to rotate around a beautifully flawed cast that keeps the series from growing stale or predictable. There is so much detail and description to give these books the atmospheric decadence that readers adore in this genre, but each installment stays fast paced and compulsive from beginning to end. I don't want to spoil anything with the actual case being solved, but I will state that I had not figured out who the killer was and found myself completely satisfied with how the case wrapped up. Be ready for a gut-wrenching cliffhanger my friends! Highly recommended, and another winner for the authors.
"Just as clouds rolling between areas of high and low pressure can turn into a tornado, a stalker's emotional swings between worship and hatred can suddenly become extremely violent."
I haven’t read any of this series. I didn’t realise this was book 5 in the Joona Linna series when I got it. I’m always doing stuff like that! I really need to pay attention more.
I felt like I should have at least read the book before this, I recommend that as you won’t be fumbling about so much at the beginning. Nevertheless I loved it.
First book by this author I am ashamed to say ( hides my head in shame) I can certainly see why his books are popular though.
Excellent read. And no, I was kept guessing all the way through.
I’ve been meaning to read something by this husband and wife team but didn’t realize this is the fifth book in a series until after I finished it. I may have had a different reaction had I known. Keeping this in mind, I found this thriller to be formulaic. It’s perfectly fine with a lot of police procedural elements present in addition to unnerving murders. Had I known the characters better I believe I would have liked it more. If you a reader of this series, I’m sure you will enjoy it much more than I did.
Stalker is my first venture into the crime duo Lars Kepler's Joona Linna world, and I'm so glad that I was given the opportunity to dive right in, because it's fabulous. For those living under a rock, Lars Kepler is the pseudonym for real life Swedish couple Alexandra and her husband Alexander. While Stalker is the fifth in the Joona Linna series, you don't necessarily need to read the previous installments to get caught right up to speed. Now that I finished Stalker, I may as well drive backwards into this series, because I'm hooked!
The Swedish National Crime Unit is currently investigating a series of murders that are unconscionable—the culprit is sending voyeuristic and sadistic videos of his female victims prior to their brutal murders, in a deliberate slap-in-the-face to the police force. Detective Margot Silverman is struggling between her dedication to the force, and her personal life (as her wife is pregnant and wants Margot to spend more time with the family). After finding out that former Detective Joona Linna has been in hiding, she recruits him to join the investigative team, in hopes of using his expertise in finding this demented murderer. At the same time, hypnotist and psychologist Erik Maria Bark is retained by the Swedish National Crime Unit. Similarities with this new serial killer correlate to crimes that happened earlier in Erik's career. The problem is that Erik presided on a trial for the culprit and the criminal has been in a mental institution for years. Is this the work of a copycat killer, or something worse?
Stalker is over 500 pages of fun-filled, mystery, and thrills! You really never put the book down once you crack the cover. The book is translated from Swedish, but you'd never know it—it fits the vernacular of what I'm used to when reading crime-fiction quite perfectly. At times, I was seriously on the edge-of-my-seat shocked at what was happening as I reading. The crimes featured in this book took me back to a time when I read Sharon Bolton's Now You See Me, but the subject matter in this case is much more profound. Stalker allows the reader to enjoy a deliciously dark detective procedural, while also enjoying the characterization of the main players at hand. We start to learn the intricacies on each character, and the roles they play in continuing the story. There wasn't one moment throughout the book that I felt wasn't necessary—it's a complete and well-rounded story that I would recommend to any crime-fiction aficionado.
I haven't read the other books in the series as I won this from Goodreads but that never took away from my enjoyment of this book.Stalker is the fifth instalment in the Swedish series and follows the crime of an obsessive stalker who brutality beats their victims, leaving their faces and other parts of their bodies completely disfigured. Before the crime is committed, a video is sent to the police where the Stalker simply observes the victim but as soon as it is sent the race is on.
Erik Maria Bark, a hypnotist, is the main character but Joona enters the story later as a shadow of himself, according to his friends as he appears sickly and emaciated.Magrot also becomes a key character as she is the detective involved in the case and allows Joona to help in the investigation, unofficially.
The characters are written really well as they provide a great source of entertainment and intrigue as the story develops. In this book, they are more of an asset to the story than anything else.I didn't particularly have a favourite but none of them seriously annoyed me either.Despite not having a favourite,it left me a little upset when a character died and I enjoyed the interactions between characters.
The story was fantastic,it reels you in from the start and contains chilling scenes where you experience the victim in their last, normal moments before they realised they're being watched.I was constantly enthralled by the mystery of the killer and the twist concerning them is a jaw-dropping one.Stalker completely fits into the genre of thriller as it's a real crime drama, keeping you entertained from start to finish.
My only real problem with this novel was the believability of some police procedures or their priorities especially with some of the stuff Joona gets away with.
I definitely would recommend this to anyone interested in the crime or thriller genre, as this one is a perfect example of both.I'm incredibly glad I won this from Goodreads,it's a great, exciting read.
EHHHHH. 600 pages for that? UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT
Okay okay... don’t disown me yet!!!
So like here’s the deal... I go into reading this book thinking “okay this is gonna be a gruesome scandi crime novel like the others” and I WAS HERE FOR THAT.
But then this happened: - random sex cult - piano lessons 🎹 - drug abuse - psychologist who needs a psychologist - pregnancy - graffiti at school - prison breaks - dirty preachers - elbow breaking in trailer parks - religious cults - cops who don’t know how to use guns - a yellow rain coat 🧥 - deer figurines - a mini decathlon - youtube videos - furniture stores (you get a 🛋 and you get a 🛋) - tunnels and cages (Joe is that you?! 👀) - lack of common sense - a lack of understand in how mirrors work - oh and then a stalker 💁🏻♀️
And somehow all of that was supposed to tie together in the end????? BUT IT DIDNT. And that’s what fell short for me.
Like, of the main 5 sub plots (yes that’s 5 sub plots outside of the one main plot), only 2 of them had conclusive resolutions. The others... ehhhh they disappeared with my dreams.
I dunno ... I can just on the bandwagon of most “unbelievable” stories but this one ... errrr hurmp ... there was just way too my mess to be cleaned up.
So alas, I give Stalker 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. It was weird, man. Just really really weird.
PS. none of those things are spoilers because I DARE YOU to put that all together in a sensible way and decipher this plot! Seriously .... I DARE YOUUUUU! 😏
Serial killers are no laughing matter. Such thrillers are all the rage these days and you can find dozens of them at your local bookstore. But, this one stands out from the pack. Written by a husband and wife team under the pseudonym Lars Kepler, this fifth installment in the series is well-written, engrossing thriller.
Taking place in Sweden, it is filled with interesting characters, tense moments, and glimpses into the dark corners of Swedish society. It starts with the police receiving videos of killings and becomes a race against time to try to get there before the killer strikes again. And, the best suspect has been in custody for a decade and a half. The tension keeps ratcheting up step by step before the climatic standoff. Good work here.
I could not keep my concentration on this one. Usually for thrillery types I find I get really engrossed when I do the audio. In this case I just got bored a lot and my mind wandered (which means I missed key things). A lot of people who's reviews I generally agree with loved this, so I would say give it a go. Just maybe go with the print instead of the audio.
This is the 5th book in the Joona Linna series written by the Swedish authors known as Lars Kepler. I had previously read and enjoyed the other four releases in this series so I was eagerly waiting for this novel to be released. DS Margot Siverman takes the lead in this latest novel when Joona Linna who was presumed dead after an apparent suicidal drowning. The Department receive a strange video of an unidentified woman but as yet there is no crime. So when the woman is found murdered DS Silverman is thrown into the investigation to find the stalker / murderer. The first murder is followed by another video showing a unidentified woman been apparently stalked. Now the team must track down both the woman in the video before she is murdered and also the killer.
This novel is well written, beautifully planned and the characters are so believable.
My favorite Lars Kepler book yet!! This is a stellar serial killer thriller set in Stockholm, Sweden. It's dark, addictive, and has a gut-punch of a final reveal! Kepler never fails to deliver completely entertaining, engrossing reads. One other note: this is Book 5 in a series, but can easily be read as a standalone!
In this much anticipated fifth novel in the Joona Linna series, Kepler delivers more thrill and drama to appease fans. With Linna presumed dead after an apparent suicidal drowning, control of the National Criminal Investigation Division falls to DS Margot Silverman. When the Division receives a clip from YouTube that outlines a voyeur film of an unidentified woman, the authorities are curious, but have seen no crime. It is only when the woman is found murdered that things begin to take on a shape of their own. Clues are plentiful, though turn up no leads, leaving the Silverman to direct her team to scour the crime scenes. When another clip appears, the race is on to identify the woman before the murder, but again their hands are tied and Silverman's patience is coming to an end. After the man who sought to kill Linna and his family turns up dead and his identity is confirmed, Linna's true whereabouts, in rural Sweden becomes known, where his is alive and living off the grid. However, he is no longer part of the inner circle created by law enforcement, but has been coaxed back to offer some of his own insight on this baffling crime. Meanwhile, Erik Maria Bark is working as a psychiatrist, seeking to pull memories from the victims' family members, to determine if there might be a connection between this stalking crimes. He holds a secret as well as a revelation; he's helped to put away a man for murder who positioned his victim in a manner similar to those turning up now. Bark did not alert the authorities to a key piece of evidence that came out under hypnosis, but is now harbouring a moral dilemma. Could these recent killings be part of the larger narrative, or is a copycat on the loose? Bark revisits his former patient to make amends and to see if he can help discover new clues to this larger mystery. With more clips making their way to the Division, the women begin to be recognised, friends and family of those on the case, leaving the race to find the killer at the highest priority. Only the jagged memories of a former drug addict and the description of a 'Dirty Preacher' fuels the investigation, and there is little time to lose. That has never stopped Joona Linna from taking matters into his own hands, which he does without a second thought, no matter the consequences. Kepler's hiatus can easily be forgiven after this masterful piece of work, which fans will devour.
Kepler remains at the top of the Scandinavian crime fiction list the world over, and for good reason. The stories are complex, with characters that pull the reader in and a plot that progresses nicely through the short chapters. The mystery is never one of clear A to B, but meanders as it develops, offering backstories that will, eventually, become highly important to the larger narrative. The patient and attentive reader will find themselves pulled in, even with Linna as a less than central character, and rushing to discover the killer and motive. Such a masterful tale is not lost in translation, but far surpasses some of the crime fiction originally penned in English. It is only disappointing that these readers must wait patiently for rights to be granted and translation accomplished before enjoying another novel, with a cliffhanger ending that begs for resolution.
Kudos, Lars Kepler for this great novel. You do not disappoint in the least, even with the delay in the novel's release.
This is the fifth book in the crime series. I was oblivious to the fact that this was part of a series when I requested it from NetGalley. I'd rather read a series from the start, than somewhere in the middle, and wouldn't have requested Stalker #5 had I been aware of this. But that's totally my fault, I should have checked before I made the request. Stalker still worked as a stand alone book, and was creepy and totally gripping. I enjoyed Kepler's writing style with the Nordic noir style going on. If I have the chance I may go and read the series from the start.
Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins U.K, Harper Fiction, for the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
If you've been a reader of my blog for a while, it probably comes as no surprise to you that as soon as I read the title of this book, I knew I had to read it! I'm such a fan of books that involve some element of stalking. I picked this one up with the intention of reading a few chapters, and ended up reading 200+ pages before I had to put it down to eat dinner. Stalker starts out on a bang, and continued to hold my rapt attention throughout the entire book, despite it being almost 600 pages. The story is told through multiple POVs, so we get a little bit of insight into the actions of each character, and some are definitely more likable than others. I really enjoyed the pacing of this book, and found that it moved quickly, which I liked. I especially found the ending to be engrossing and fast paced, and I ultimately loved the conclusion, and can’t wait for the next book! While this can be read as a standalone, I'd recommend reading the other books in the series first so you have more context and don't have too many spoilers for the earlier books if you plan to read those! All in all, I loved this one and highly recommend it to fans of the thriller or crime fiction genres! I'd like to thank Knopf Publishing Group for my copy of the book. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review.
Thank you to Net Galley, to the publishers and to the authors, as Lars Kepler is two people !
My first novel by this team, Lars Kepler, although fifth in the series..
Firstly the length of this book, makes me give the book was star less, yes it is too long at nearly 640 pages...
Secondly, lots of pages means lots of characters, lots of plots, sub plots.
A video is sent to the National Crime Investigation Department in Stockholm. It shows a normal woman in her own home, doing nothing very exciting. By the time the police identify her, she’s dead. More victims are found, and it becomes clear that the killer is not going to stop. Each video sent to the police means another butchered woman. With the chilling fact they cannot trace who the person is till it is too late..
Margot Silverman is tasked with catching the killer. Heavily pregnant, she’s determined to solve the case before going on leave. Erik Maria Bark is a hypnotist who thinks the crimes may be linked to a case he worked on years ago.
And everyone thought Joona Linna was dead!
As mentioned I have not read previous books in the series, and I found Stalker a little confusing at first. There are lots of characters and plot elements that call back to earlier novels, and it’s a lot to take in at once. So I do suggest that you read all previous four books.
Due the large size of the book, it lacks the pulse rating pace of many books I enjoy to read, but gains a good pace for the last 20% of the book.
Different plots, lots of geography on Sweden do interrupt the pace and also following so many characters also effects the pace.
Really a battle in my own head whether a three star or a four star(especially for the last part of the book), but when a book takes two weeks to read and is a struggle, then really this is a three star.
Good points, but maybe a few negative points.
My honest thoughts and review.
One question for you readers is this a Crime Thriller or a psychological thriller ?
I've read a lot of crime/thriller/murder mysteries and I can say that this is, without a doubt, the most spine-chilling, goosebump-inducing crime novel I've ever read. Honestly, I can't say I've ever read a novel which made my heart beat as fast as this. It pulled me right in, and as cliche as it sounds, I felt like I was there. This, as you might imagine, is pretty terrifying when the novel in question is a crime novel. 100% recommend if you think you can handle it!
Stalker is book 5 in the series, and it is the first one I read Im so glad I did it is fabulous. It can definitely be read as a standalone book and I intend to go back and read the other books.
This book takes Stalker to the next level, if you have read YOU the eligible creeperton Joe…… well this book is next level creepy.
The police receive a series of video recordings from the Stalker. The videos are of him watching his female victims just moments or days before they are brutally murdered. The police are constantly on the backfoot in the race to catch a killer.
There are so many twists and turns in this book, that creepy yellow jacket who is the killer? I kept changing my mind back and forth and when I was revealed GASP! It is so good.
I don’t want to give away anything, it just over 500 pages and this book is a page turner I highly recommend.
This is the fifth book in a series that I have only read one of. I guess I just love chaos?
Joona Linna is back to hunt down a serial killer that preemptively posts videos of the victims to the internet, moments before they get attacked. This is a fun cat and mouse story, with some pretty intense moments and gruesome details. 0/10 on the big whodunnit reveal, though, like what?
Also lolz I found this book on a list of “best serial killer books to read immediately right now”. And it was not the best. And I need recommendations. And I will never again trust lists promoted on Facebook because they liiiiieeeee.
I jumped into this series last year and read the fourth book, The Sandman and was completely blown away by how fantastic it was, but also so happy that I was easily able to jump in at the point with absolutely no issues whatsoever. This one picks up shortly after The Sandman ends and if you’ve read that one, then you already know what an epic ending that had and I was so excited to catch up again. All of that to say, if you’re gonna jump into this series I highly recommend doing what I did and start with Sandman and then this one, they’re both must reads for Crime Fiction fans.
Stalking is a popular concept for many books, TV shows and movies, but I’ve never met a more creepy and calculated stalker than the one in this book. This guy makes Joe from You look like a harmless kid with his first crush who does some basic social media stalking, I’m not kidding. The videos the police receive as a taunt are just snapshots of women going about their ordinary daily lives and that’s what made this all the more chilling. Women getting dressed or undressed, eating doing any of the normal things we all do in our homes but someone is watching their every move. To find out why, and even more importantly, who Kepler leads you down a cleverly crafted road full of stunning revelations and shocking twists.
This installment introduced a few new characters (at least new to me, they may have first appeared in earlier books) and my favorite was Margot. She’s heavily pregnant and determined to close this case before she gives birth and I just loved her fierce determination and willingness to toe the boundaries of the law. Erik was also an interesting character, he uses hypnosis to aid people in recovering from trauma and that’s a concept that’s always piqued my interest. Add in Kepler’s crisp writing style and short, fast paced chapters and I seriously could not put this one down.
I could ramble on forever about how much I enjoyed this one, but I’ll spare you all and just once again urge you to read this if you like smart, sharp stories that are incredibly multilayered full of well drawn characters and a plot that seizes you from page one and ends in an epic finale that will leave you begging for the next book.
Stalker in three words: Intricate, Brilliant and Harrowing.
This is the fifth installment in the magnificent Joona Linna book series, written by one of the most successful crime fiction authors duette, Alexander and Alexandra Ahndoril, whose nom de plume is Lars Kepler. The previous novel, Sandman, has been a major commercial as well as critical success and it featured one of the most terrifying antagonists in Scandinavian crime fiction, Joona Linna's arch-nemesis, Jurek Walter. The finale of Sandman ended in a cliffhanger regarding the fate of both Joona and Walter, the first officially considered to be dead by suicide while the second got shot by Joona's colleague and friend, Saga Bauer, nevertheless the book doesn't make clear if Walter is really dead or he managed, once again, to get away with heavy injuries. Thus, Stalker begins with a new character, detective Margot Silverman, leading the investigation of a series of grisly homicides taking place in Stockholm where the perpetrator films his victims just before he attacks them and then uploads the videos to the web, so the police can watch it without being able to intervene in any way.
How do I HATE thee, oh--let me count the ways... 1. This book is at least 200 pages too long. I realized that I could basically skim 50% of this book and get the gist. 2. There are so many flat out weird scenes that have NOTHING to do with the overall story. There's a random sex raid, a finger in a jar that's from a different case(This fuels issue #1.) 3. The ending was a bit hard for me to follow. 4. The twist felt forced and lacked the fun emotional shock that typically comes when answers are revealed.
I don't want to go into too much detail in the event that you decide to read the book--but I'd recommend you save your time.
Stalker had some spine chilling moments but fails to engage as a whole book. The novel is spread over more than 500 pages with many chapters just drag too much. An edited 300 page version would have made it a good read.
