The Mad Morelands #6

His Wicked Charm

Rate this book
She’s too prim

Lilah Holcutt dislikes Constantine Moreland from the moment she meets him. He may be handsome, but he’s frivolous, rash, impulsive and, worst of all, a flirt. Now that Con’s twin brother has married Lilah’s best friend, she’s seeing way more of Con than she’d like. And when Con’s sisters are inexplicably kidnapped, Lilah’s own curiosity and stubbornness get the better of her, and she finds herself swept into Con’s investigation.

He’s indifferent to propriety

Con knows that Lilah hates him—he just wishes she weren’t so devastatingly beautiful, that he weren’t so attracted to her. Especially since they’re working closely together to solve the kidnapping, an adventure that leads them to Lilah’s peculiar childhood home, Barrow House, which sits atop an ancient fen and features an eerie maze on its grounds.

They’ll have to join together to conquer a sinister force

The more Con and Lilah uncover, the more they’re convinced that the answers lie buried deep within Barrow House—answers to a mystery darker than either of them could ever have realized.

Review from 2018

A for narration; B- for content.

This is the sixth book in Candace Camp’s Mad Morelands series, which originally comprised four books, but which has been expanded to include stories for the two youngest Moreland siblings, twins Alex and Con. His Wicked Charm opens not long after His Sinful Touch (my content grade was C+) which I found clichéd and somewhat clumsily executed. His Wicked Charm is an improvement, mostly due to the fact that Con is a more engaging character than Alex – Con is lively and funny where Alex was quite dour – but even so, the story meanders and lacks focus, and the paranormal elements are rather corny and melodramatic.

Constantine Moreland and Lilah Holcutt disliked each other from the moment they met. She thinks he’s too impulsive and not serious enough, and he thinks she’s too proper and bound by convention, but now Con’s brother has married Lilah’s best friend, they have to play nice. Needless to say, they are rarely successful; Con delights in needling Lilah by flirting with her outrageously, and most of their interactions end up as arguments. So, it amazes both of them to find that when the situation calls for it, they can actually set those differences aside and work together to achieve a desired outcome – in this case the rescue of Con’s mother and sisters, who are abducted off the street during a demonstration in support of female emancipation. Lilah insists on accompanying Con when he sets off in pursuit, but it turns out that the ladies are on the verge of rescuing themselves when the couple arrives (as detailed in the short story included at the end of the audiobook, Their Unexpected Adventure), but they still have to work out who kidnapped them and why.

Piecing together the various bits of information gleaned from his mother and sisters, Con comes to the conclusion that the Moreland ladies were not the kidnapper’s intended targets, and that they were actually after Sabrina, Alex’s new wife. This poses a lot more questions to which Con and Lilah are determined to find answers, and Con thinks they may be found at Carmoor, Sabrina’s family home in Somerset. But with Sabrina away on her honeymoon, Carmoor is closed up, so Lilah very reluctantly extends an invitation to her childhood home, Barrow House, which is nearby.

Lilah’s unwillingness to go to Barrow House is due to the fact that it’s the home of her very eccentric Aunt Vesta, a spiritualist and mystic who used to hold séances on behalf of Lilah’s father, who was desperate to contact his dead wife. After a séance-gone-wrong when she was twelve, Lilah was sent to live with her other aunt – the complete opposite of Vesta – who drummed into her the need for strict propriety and correct behaviour at all times. Lilah has been the very model of decorum ever since, and keeps herself under very strict control; and it’s this tightly restrained aspect of her that proves such an irresistible challenge to Con, who becomes determined to draw out the daring, passionate woman he is sure lies beneath her prim and proper exterior.

Con and Lilah are one of those classic antagonistic, opposites-attract couples, and there is definite chemistry between them, but Lilah really is a bit of an antidote for most of the book. It’s true that she’s hiding a pretty big (and pretty far-fetched) secret and is desperately trying to cling to the respectability and normalcy she craves, but she’s quite judgemental and difficult to like a lot of the time, making it difficult, sometimes, to understand what Con sees in her. That said, though, the romance is done reasonably well, although it’s a little hard to believe that buttoned-up Lilah would fall so readily into bed with Con. And then, of course, the author has to throw in a Big Mis born of miscommunication; and this is in addition to an already convoluted plotline concerning a shadowy brotherhood, blood oaths, a mystical goddess, a mysterious Sanctuary and other supernatural shenanigans. Don’t get me wrong – I enjoy paranormal romances or stories with mystical elements, and I’m aware that there has been a paranormal element running throughout the series (all the “Mad Morelands” are gifted with supernatural talents) – but this is old-fashioned, not-at-all-subtle hokum that sometimes feels as though the author just threw her various ideas into the pot and didn’t cook them properly. She does, however, do a very good job of concealing the identity of the villain of the piece; it wasn’t until fairly late in the day that I realised who it must be (because of the absence of many other suspects).

Will Thorne’s narration is thoroughly accomplished, enjoyable and, as was the case with the previous book, strong enough to carry the weaker parts of the story. His interpretation of Con is perfect; there’s the glint of naughty humour and a lightness of tone in his voice which suits the character down to the ground, but there’s a strength and determination behind it all that clearly informs the listener that he’s more than a charming rogue. In the scenes in which the twins appear together, they are easy to tell apart, and Mr. Thorne does a very good job when it comes to differentiating between the large secondary cast; the entire Moreland clan makes cameo appearances, and somehow, he manages to give each of them – male and female – a different register, tone and timbre so as to create subtle differences between them. Characters, such as Sabrina and the Desmonds – whom we met in the previous book – are portrayed consistently across both titles, and as with Con and Alex, Mr. Thorne is able to imbue Lilah and Sabrina with sufficient different vocal characteristics as to enable the listener to easily distinguish between them. The one criticism I can make is that sometimes Lilah sounds rather breathy and her speech is often ‘whispery’, but that wasn’t a huge issue and the performance as a whole, is excellent.

I enjoyed His Wicked Charm more than I did His Sinful Touch, but I still can’t say that the story – which goes into completely bonkers territory near the end – is one I’d recommend without some serious caveats. Will Thorne’s narration carries the day, though, and if you’ve listened to him before, you’ll know that his performance alone is going to be worth the price of admission. Take this one with a big pinch of salt and listen to it when you’re in the mood for a bit of silliness.

Not even a narration by "Will Thorne" could save me from being bored with this book. It isn't bad exactly, just too slow and too long for me.

His Wicked Charm was a wonderful romance between a heroine who always follows the rules and the hero who makes her want to break them.

Lilah Holcutt and Constantine Moreland disliked each other from the moment they met. Lilah finds Con too impulsive and Con thinks Lilah is entirely too proper. However when Con's brother marries Lilah's best friend, the two are forced to spend more time together. After Con's mother and sisters are kidnapped, Con and Lilah race to find them uncovering a mystery in the process. Following the ladies Moreland rescue, Con and Lilah find themselves heading to Lilah's childhood home, Barrow House, in their quest for answers.

Lilah's childhood was a bit unusual compared to most with her aunt conducting séances while her father attempted to contact his deceased wife. When she was twelve after a séance goes wrong, Lilah went to live with a different aunt who drummed into Lilah the need to be above reproach. From then on, Lilah strived to always follow the rules and to always do the right thing even if it wasn't what she wanted. She struggles over her lack of freedom and with the match her aunt tries to persuade her to accept, but she tends not to speak up for fear of hurting her aunt.

Con has always believed in a family of people with extra abilities that he was simply the one without one. While he can find anything or anyone and always knows his way around, he has never considered that to be an ability. Con doesn't resent his family's extras and instead focuses on what he can do to assist in the agency his brother and him run. Con has always been the more outgoing of the twins compared to Alex, but that didn't lessen their bond at all. With Alex marrying, Con is worried he is losing his twin which is something he struggles with.

Lilah and Con have a very antagonistic relationship at first and the two can't be in the same room as each other without arguing. Con is a shameless flirt and he enjoys teasing Lilah which irritates her to no end. However after the two spend time alone while going after Con's kidnapped family, the two begin to get along better. Con in a way pushes Lilah to open up more to the possibility of there being things in life that cannot be explained. Their physical attraction distracts them several times over the course of their investigation and when they give in to their passions, it's incredibly sexy and very well done.

The mystery aspect of this book was very well done and I think it was my favorite in the series. The investigation into the keys and the Sanctuary was quite interesting. I enjoyed learning more about how the three families discovered the place and how it influenced their lives. Exploring Barrow House with the characters was a lot of fun and I liked finding out the secrets of the house. When we find out who was behind everything, I was surprised as it wasn't someone I expected.

His Wicked Charm has been my favorite of the Mad Morelands books I've read and I look forward to reading the books I missed in the series in the future. I would recommend this series for anyone looking for a historical romance series with a paranormal twist.

Series: The Mad Morelands #6
Publication Date: 3/27/18

This book is absolutely perfect! It begins with a wedding and ends with a wedding and sandwiched between is a kidnapping, a mystery, an unexpected villain, mysticism, jealousy, unwelcome suitors, paranormal powers, and a lovely romance. I cannot believe that I have missed the first five books in the series and I certainly intend to remedy that! I had no trouble reading and following the book without having read the others in the series.

Constantine (Con) Moreland is the son of a Duke and publicly portrays himself exactly as he is. He’s fun-loving, nice (very nice), appealing, humorous, irreverent, impulsive and feels that the rules, at best, are just guidelines. He’s also handsome as sin, never gets lost, and just doesn’t know what to make of Lilah Holcutt. With Con – what you see is what you get.

Lilah Holcutt is the exact opposite of Con. She follows the rules, abhors scandal, is ever the prim and proper miss, likes her feet planted firmly on the ground, – and maybe she’s a bit judgmental. She is NOT flamboyant, she doesn’t crave excitement and adventure and she isn’t driven by wild uncontrollable passion. She doesn’t like Con because he is a rule breaker and – well – he teases her and that makes her think that he doesn’t like her.

We begin our story with the wedding of Alex, Con’s twin brother, and Sabrina, Lilah’s best (and only) friend. Not long after the wedding festivities are over and the happy couple has left for their honeymoon trip, Lilah’s life is back to its normal, prim, proper and boring ways. Her very, very, very staid aunt and uncle are back to finding her a proper, appropriate husband. On a particularly boring day, Lilah remembers that she promised to loan Olivia (Con’s sister) a book and decides to take it over to her. When she arrives, she learns that Olivia is out with her mother and sisters and Lilah decides she’ll just leave the book – but – Con intercepts her. As they are speaking, they learn that Con’s mother and sisters have been kidnapped. Con dashes out to the location and Lilah insists on accompanying him. Chaos, pure chaos is the scene that greets them when they arrive at the location. The Duchess and her daughters and daughters-in-law have been kidnapped and there are no clues.

After some consultation with the family, Con and Lilah take off in pursuit of the kidnappers. Con has always had the unique ability – he doesn’t get lost – and always seems to know which direction he should go. That is certainly useful when trailing the kidnappers. Strangely, that ability seems to be stronger, more acute when Lilah is near him. Luckily, they find the duchess and the ladies with her and just as Con and Lilah are rescuing them – they rescue themselves.

That begins a story filled with more twists and turns than a knotted rope. Who was the real target of the kidnapping? Was it really the duchess? Was it Kyria? Was it Sabrina? Did the kidnappers miss their real target? Who was the villain? Was it Sir Jasper? Was it the Dearborn’s (again)? Was it somebody totally new? What key is the villain looking for? What does it open? Where could it be? Oh! What an exciting adventure. You’ll love the search and the discovery and you’ll absolutely love Con and Lilah finding their HEA. I adored Lilah’s growth as she discovers who she really is and what she values in life.

I highly recommend this book and I can assure you I’ll be catching up with the rest of the series very, very soon!

Dear Ms. Camp you have been writing long enough to know that a Duke's son would be addressed as Lord Constantine not Lord Moreland.
I have to say I am sorely disappointed in "the greats" novels. Constantine and Alexander were so compelling as boys, but I could not warm to their adult characters. The heroine in this book was insipid, very unlikeable. The plot completely unbelievable and bordering on the absurd. I will say that I almost ALWAYS figure out the villain, but was completely in the dark in HIS WICKED CHARM. The short chapter at the end about Thisbe was very good. I have always wished there had been a full novel about her and Desmond.

Another mad caper!

Lord Constantine Moreland at last meets his match in the rigid, rule abiding Lilah Holcutt. He's intrigued by her, and Lilah is drawn to Con, despite her disapproval of him. When the Moreland women are kidnapped its Lilah who charges off with Con to find them.
Lilah is hiding a secret and that secret leads her to repress the more open aspect of her nature. It's only after she and Con go to her family home, a weirdly wonderful place, Barrow House with its maze and the Faire Track "a place of power for thousands of years" that things become complex and otherworldly. As with all things to do with love, Con and Lilah tread that delightful line between the 'does she, doesn't she', no mans land of love undeclared, yet not unrequited!
I loved that Com was first attracted to Lilah by the glimpse he had of her stockings. She was, "wearing bright lilac stockings. And [Con] thought, there’s more to her than meets the eye.” And there is! So much more!
Another Mad Moorlands treasure!

Con and Lilah are explosive. This story is full of sizzling passion, mystery, adventure and danger. This whole series is an auto buy for me, and this newest one may be my favorite.
The characters are delightful. the Mad Morelands are amazing each and every one. So many wonderful people in one family. Con is no exception. How I loved him! One of the best things about Candace's writing is the familial relationships. I absolutely adore watching all of the siblings interact with each other in such an effortless, familial way. It is not often that an author so well conveys family ties.
Lilah is everything prim and proper. I knew from the moment we met her in Sabrina and Alex's story that she was meant for Con. It was written in the stars! They are amazing together.
The story is a total page turner. Seemingly innocent details dropped along the way lead to a shocking conclusion of the mystery. Once started, this book was impossible to put down.

Constantine Moreland is a dangerous and handsome flirt. Lilah Holcutt is a beautiful and cold woman – seemingly immune to Con’s charms. But under the cool exterior beats the heart of a frightened and confused woman. Lilah is wary of Con’s teasing, flirtatious nature. But when some of the Moreland women are kidnapped the pair are thrown together to rescue the group. Con’s eyes are open to a person hidden beneath Lilah’s haughty exterior. Can anything real exist between them? Can seeming enemies become lovers?
Camp is a master of spinning tales with sexual tension. The pull between Con and Lilah is very strong and at times feels almost frantic. I highly recommend this book.

This is an amazing read!

Lilah Holcutt and Constantine Moreland had a clash of wills as soon as they met each other and its only because of their two favorite people that they’re civil to each other....sort of.
Even though he’s handsome as sin and the worst kind of flirt, and the way her heart just stutters every time he’s near bodes ill to her very strict rules.

Constantine has finally met his match in the very beautiful but prim Lilah and he just loves to tweak her hat every chance he gets!
They’re thrown together in more ways than one when the Moreland women are kidnaped and Lilah and Con are on the chase to investigate. Secrets are revealed along with their deepest desires and some magic and paranormal add just the right amount of whimsy in this amazing read!

Candace Camp has a gift of storytelling that is exceptional. She weaves her magic and transports you to a world of mystery magic and heart stopping adventure.
The plot was extremely well developed with edge of your seat mystery and the sexual tension just sizzles off the page. A thrilling ride of mystery, kidnapping and an ending you will not believe! I love the Morelands this was the best of the series!
I was gifted a copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

This is the 6th book in the Mad Moreland Series and I recommend that you read all 6 but this book can stand alone. The research Candace must have put into this book was unbelievable. It was so exciting form the very first page to the last. I am in awe over it! His Wicked Charm by Candace Camp is book Six in The Mad Morelands series. This is the story of Lilah Holcutt and Constantine Moreland. I have read the previous book but feel this is easily a standalone book.
Lilah does like Con but since his brother has married her good friend he now seems to be a regular part of her life. Con knows that he isn't on Lilah most liked person list but he can't fight the feelings that her beauty brings to him. When his sister ends up missing Lilah comes forward to help him find her. But can these two opposite people work together?
This does have a hint of paranormal theme.
Ms. Camp is one of my favorite authors and I truly enjoyed this book.

His Wicked Charm is the sixth book in The Mad Morelands series by Candace Camp. You don't need to read the other books in the series to fully understand and enjoy this one.

Where does one begin to describe this book? One word springs to mind...Unique. There I was expecting a regular romance then I was happily surprised when psychic abilities came into play. From the very mention of one of the character's visions, I was absolutely hooked.

That vision was of Con's sisters and mother being kidnapped. Con is the hero of our story. He is one of twin brothers, and his twin recently married Lilah's best friend. Lilah is the heroine of the story. Lilah and Con do not get on. When they find out about the kidnapping Lilah insists on helping Con find the women which in turn has them spending enough time together to realise that perhaps they have both missed the finer qualities of each other. When it later comes to light that Lilah herself is in danger from somebody looking for her key, a key that she has no idea about, it takes her and Con to her family home in order to do some searching.

While searching for the key, which is like a needle in a haystack, they open up a whole can of worms with regards to what they discover about her family, and about supernatural forces seemingly attached to the property. What they discover and how they discover it made for a fascinating read, then add to that the developing romance between Lilah and Con and you have the perfect story. Do they find the key, what is it for, and why are people willing to kill for it? This book has it all, and I absolutely can't fault it.

Entertaining from beginning until the last page, Candace Camp sprinkles her magic prose in the next installment of the Mad Morelands. Setting 1898 London where two people who appear opposite, seem to be pulled to each other. Of course being related by marriage is the main culprit. You see Lilah Holcutt's best friend just married Constantine Moreland's twin brother, but all she can see is Con's carefree impulsive nature and a flirt of the first degree! Con thinks Lilah is just so beautiful but she seems not to like him since they first met. But circumstances draw them together as they help each other find out what has happened to Con's sisters. They have been kidnapped and they work frantically to find them. As secrets come to light and even a twist of the paranormal, these two begin to have strong emotions for each other. This author holds me captive in each story I have read. Her well drawn characters easily come to life and she captures the essence of the era in which the story is set. I cannot wait for more of this series, although this book can be read as a standalone. But why would you want to only read one? Prepare to be swept into this wonderful story that you will not be able to put down!!

Its a buy buy buy buy buy book! This is more like what I expect from this author. She is so incredibly talented. This book just keeps you wanting more and more and more. I absolutely positively adored her characters. I love her story line and the way she has written adventure, mystery, passion and romance. It is scattered and intertwined all the way through out this story. She is one of the greatest romance authors of our time and it shows in this novel. I was totally engrossed and kept that way from page one until the very end. It made me go into my library and see what other books I own in this series so that I could read them all again. I must say for a great read you need to buy this book. If you have never read any of the other in this series that is okay for this one can stand by itself. However, I would suggest you do yourself a gift and buy the others when you can and enjoy them also! I was given this book in return for an honest review. Regards, Anna

I loved Lilah and Con's story!! I knew when reading the previous book in the series that Camp would probably pair these two together and I'm so glad that she did~

While all of the Mad Moreland stories had some elements of the supernatural, this one had a bit more than the others (so be prepared!). I have to say that I loved Lilah and Con and all the bantering they did! I was often laughing out loud at their conversations. Even when they were pretending to dislike each other, you could practically see the attraction that was between them. Loved it!!

I can't wait to see what Camp has in store for us next!

Thank you to NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
This is Candace Camp at her best. The story is of Delilah, a very prim and proper young debutante who is perhaps not what she seems and Constantine, the debonair smooth talking brother of her best friend’s husband. The two cannot seem to get along for even a moment, but maybe that’s not quite how it seems.
This book centres around an occult theme which I was not expecting at all. However, even if it isn’t my regular read, this book was fast paced, entertaining and thoroughly engaging. I wanted to know what was coming next! I Camp did not disappoint and the action was in full swing by the third chapter and continued through to the last page. loved how Delilah was being pulled in two different directions and really had to search deep for her true self. I also liked how Con had two very different sides to his nature and Lilah came to realize both were valuable.
I think anyone who enjoys a little mystery, the occult or just an entertaining historical romance will enjoy this book!

Candace Camp's latest novel in the Mad Moreland series is a captivating romp through late 1800's England. In a time where the paranormal was not only believed but accepted, His Wicked Charm is simply magical! Camp's ability to make believer's out of skeptic's serves her well in this adventurous novel with a mystical twist. This book is a case of opposites who are definitely attracted. Though the hero and heroine constantly pretend to dislike each other it is obvious to the reader that there is romance in the air. Possibly, my favorite book by this author...

What I liked:

There was a lot to like in this book. I haven't talked to many readers who have read the book who did not find it one of Camp's best. The overall tone of the novel was adventurous and fast paced. Readers will enjoy how the plot develops, as well as, how the romance picks up speed right along with it. Sometimes that is the issue with novels like this. You have a very good plot but the romance falls flat or the plot drags and the romance is steamy. I'm happy to report that is not the case with this one. The plot was riveting and the romance was spicy.

The hero, Constantine Moreland was quite the flirt. He was fun loving and full of vinegar, but he was also devoted to his eccentric family. Camp does a wonderful job of showing the familial bonds between the Moreland's and the other families in this book. I liked the fact that Camp was able to show readers Con's cheeky side and still allow them to see his more heroic and thrill seeking side as well. His attraction to Lilah Holcutt was surprising since she was the complete opposite of everything he was. Their meeting in the previous book, His Sinful Touch was less than stellar, but they tolerated each other for the sake of his brother and her best friend. The sparks certainly start flying when they meet again, though.

Oh, Lilah! lol... I just couldn't put my finger on the reason she was sooo uptight. I understand the concept of following the rules and doing the right thing and not being looked on as being out of the ordinary, but it simply isn't any fun. I really enjoyed seeing Lilah open up and show her more authentic self as Con was able to peel back her layers. There was certainly a lot more than met the eye with that one. Those lilac stockings were just the first clue.

I loved the way that Camp weaved the magic throughout this story. She has used a deft hand with the paranormal in the previous books in this series. Con's family has always shown a propensity for the eccentric and he believes in the beginning that it has basically skipped over him, but readers can tell that's not quite the case. And Lilah isn't exactly as prim and proper as she seems. Camp uses magic a bit more liberally in this novel and it makes all the difference. I loved this aspect of the book and I think most readers will agree, love is a magical thing no matter how you look at it.

What I didn't like:

The reader does have to dispense with their hard and fast ideas on magic and the paranormal here. If you are a reader who doesn't not want to consider anything out of the ordinary even in your reading, this one might not be your cup of tea. Other than that, I don't have a bad word to say. And that's a reader thing, not a writer thing. Camp was outstanding here.

Bottom Line:

If you've read the other books in the series, it's a no brainer, you gotta read it. If this is your first one, be prepared, your book budget is gonna suffer cause the first five will be on your list. This is a stand alone novel, but why would you want to? In my opinion this is one of Camp's best and my favorite in this series, for sure. Can't say enough good things about the magical elements of the story and about the romance of it all. Camp at her best!

I've seen so many goodreaders give this 5 stars that I almost feel guilty rating it as 3.5 stars.

Compared to the previous book 'His Sinful Touch' which was about Alexander Moreland, this book was a vast improvement. This book is about Constantine Moreland, Alex's twin, and Lilah Holcutt, Sabrina's best friend. The story was laid out in the previous book so the beginning was not dragged out with an introduction.

Unlike some of the readers, I started the Moreland series with the last book to be released, which is actually about one of the first Moreland, Thisbe Moreland, Theo's twin, and therefore, followed the right order and reached His Wicked Charm as the last book. Which is why, reading Alex and Con's book was so satisfying. We first meet them in Thisbe's book, where they are only three years old and tiny little hellions. And from there, we see them grow into intelligent boys until Theo's book, where they are about Thirteen years old. After that, there's a huge leap and we meet the twins again at the age of 25, grown men, full of charm, wit and infinite amount of intelligence.

Coming to the actual book, I enjoyed it more than Alex's book, mainly because of Con. Con is the heart of the book. He is charming, funny, smart and loyal to the core. He is extremely caring, although he may not show it as appropriately. Which is why I couldn't like Lilah as much. Lilah is uptight, rigid and very strict about following the rules. In fact, she adheres to the rules so much, she has to contradict everything Con does or says and sometimes there is bodily harm involved, such as slapping Con twice on 2 instances.

For someone who is so obsessed with rules, she doesn't think twice about putting a Duke's son down, slapping him, insulting him or talking to him rudely, when all he does is tease her and flirt with her a little. I may sound a bit harsh and it wouldn't have come to that if Lilah had been a little stronger. She is so different from the Moreland women, daughters and daughter in laws, including Sabrina, who at point manages to take her own decision and act on it. Instead all Lilah does is huff and puff about something, then immediately back track on it and feel sorry for herself. In short, she can't stick to one thing, rather drifting from one point to another.

The whole argument about her loving Con, only to make an immediate u turn and make it sound as marrying Con was an impossibility was seriously a waste of time and pages. All of that could've been avoided if she was just honest with herself. Honestly, Con deserves better.

The whole scene with the Moreland women being kidnapped and rescued was a joy to read, seeing all those string confident women, the last bit from Thisbe's point of view was a balm to my irritation caused by Lilah.

The story itself was well laid out, the mystery was well formed, although I felt it dragged a bit in the middle. The villain, although I had a tiiiiny suspicion, was somewhat a surprise and the ending was well written out. The epilogue was perfect and a beautiful way to bring the series to a close. I actually felt emotional by the end. I will miss the 'Mad' Moreland and their crazy antics.

You knew from the first time Lilah and Con met in His Sinful Touch that they were meant to be together. They bickered nonstop and went out of their way to avoid being alone together. But since Con's twin Alex has just married Lilah's best friend Sabrina, they are sure to be thrown together often. Con is impulsive, flirtatious, and more than willing to embrace the hint of mystic that clings to most of his family- his one complaint being that their mysterious gifts seem to have passed over him! Lilah, with her stiff attitude, adherence to society's rules, and seeming lack of humor, constantly rubs him the wrong way. But when Lilah doesn't hesitate to jump into a search for Con's family when they are kidnapped, he begins to think there may be more to Lilah than meets the eye. The reader sees Lilah's layers mostly at the same time that Con does, knowing that there is plenty beneath her proper surface and getting hints but waiting along with Con until she reveals them to us. Lilah is a wonderfully multifaceted character who tries hard to be the prim model of society her aunt has raised her to be, but finds herself chafing at the restrictions placed on her.

When she and Con go to her childhood home, Barrow House, and we meet her eccentric Aunt Vesta, things get really complicated. The Moreland family kidnapping seems to have less to do with the Morelands than with Sabrina and Lilah and their families. All of Camp's Mad Morelands series touch on the supernatural or paranormal, some more than others, and His Wicked Charm twines modern Victorian ideas with a heavy does of the appeal of the paranormal that was popular during Con and Lilah's parents and grandparents time. Past and present are inseparable though, because the puzzle they are trying to solve may have its origins two generations ago, but is very much alive in the present.

Like the rest of the Mad Morelands series, this book can be read as a stand alone, although there are enough references to events in His Sinful Touch that readers may want to start with that book first. His Wicked Charm is a fast-paced, brilliantly written thriller from start to finish. Con and Lilah have smoldering chemistry that, when they finally allow themselves to give in to it, becomes a beautiful and passionate relationship that was one of the best I've read in a long time. A perfect blend of logic and mystic, normal and paranormal, Lilah and Con balance each other and turn into a perfect team. The mystery's twist at the end was shocking- and completely perfect. His Wicked Charm may be my new favorite Candace Camp book!

(The Mad Morelands, #6

Lilah Holcutt dislikes Constantine Moreland from the minute she meets him, but has to tolerate him because his twin brother Alex is married to Lilah's best friend. He may be handsome, but he's frivolous, rash, impulsive, and worst of all a flirt which is everything she's not. Now she's seeing way more of Con then she'd like. Then Con's sisters are kidnapped, and Lilah's own curiosity and stubbornness get the better of her, and she finds herself swept into Con's investigation.

Con knows that Lilah hates him. He just wishes she wasn't so beautiful and that he wasn't so attracted to her. Especially since they are working closely together to solve the kidnapping, an adventure that leads them to Lilah's peculiar childhood home, Barrow house, which supposedly sits atop an ancient fen and features an eerie unkept maze on its grounds.

The more secrets that Con and Liah uncover, the more they're convinced that the answers lie hurried deep underneath Barrow house and is a mystery darker than either of them could ever have realized. Can Con and Lilah figure it all out before it swallows them whole? Will Lilah be strong enough to fight what is happening to her?

Candace Camp is an exceptionally gifted writter who will take you on an incredible journey that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what could possibly come next. This was a wonderful novel and I enjoyed it immensely.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars. Reviewed via NetGalley.

Lilah Holcutt's best friend just married into the Moreland family. Her friend is gone on her honeymoon when a few of the Moreland women are kidnapped. Lilah just happens to be at Moreland residence when they hear the news. That is how Lilah finds herself gallivanting all over the countryside on rescue missions and digging up secrets with the one man she cannot get along with, Constantine "Con" Moreland.

Con knows Lilah holds a strong dislike for him. He wished he felt the same way about her. Unfortunately, there is just something about her he can't seem to resist. Con convinces Lilah to help him with his latest investigation seeing as how her family owns the property he needs access to. What he does not foresee is that spending so much time in each other's company may just have some unexpected results.

Author Candace Camp's MAD MORELAND series is brilliant! The characters and their strange quirks only add to the excitement in each story. Although they are best read in order; MESMERIZED, BEYOND COMPARE, WINTERSET, AN UNEXPECTED PLEASURE, HIS SINFUL TOUCH; the most recent addition, HIS WICKED CHARM, is one of my faves because it focuses on one individual from the two sets of twins in the Moreland family, Constantine. I have loved the youngest twins since book one, especially Con. His story is a lot of fun. Fans of the MAD MORELAND series will not want to miss HIS WICKED CHARM!

This is another delightful 'Mad Morelands' book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Lilah Holcutt and Constantine Moreland are like oil and water--never to mix. Lilah always follows the rules and Con loves to break them. From the moment they met, sparks fly and not in a good way. When Con's twin brother Alex marries Lilah's best friend, these two are thrown together. Throw in a mystery steeped in the paranormal and madness and you have a book that will keep your interest until the very last page.

I adored Con, his wit, his caring personality and his ability to charm everyone he meets--everyone except Lilah. Lilah has a deep dark secret that she's been hiding since she was a child and she believes the only way to avoid scandal is to be prim and proper at all times. Being around Con upsets her neatly ordered world and she tries to avoid him at all costs. Ms. Camp is a talented author and leads the author on a merry chase to uncover the mystery. Definitely recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book much better than Alex's book (His Sinful Touch), I felt Con and Lilah were well suited and engaging and I enjoyed the mysticism in this book that was a fairly key part in all the Mad Moreland books but quite lacking in Alex's (aside from his ability which he didn't use very much).
One thing that really bothered me was a continuity error, albeit small; in His Sinful Touch the Moreland butler in London was Phipps and in this book the Moreland butler in London was Smeggars and while Phipps seemed a bit put out that they weren't as high in the instep as he'd like he also seemed loyal and unlikely to abandon his very good post in the short time span between the two novels.
I LOVED the little tidbit about Thisbe but was sadly disappointed when it ended and we didn't at least get a scene where she and Desmond were reunited (preferably from his perspective so we truly knew he meant what he said about not minding their not having children etc)!

I haven't a clue who the next book is about, but I really hope it's a throwback to Thisbe and Desmond's story!

Constantine "Con" Moreland is a little sad. His twin is getting married. Of course, he is happy for Alex but he wants the same kind of bond. All he has is a slightly antagonistic relationship with his twin's new wife's best friend, Lilah Holcutt.
Lilah is also sad. She has been raised by an aunt who is sort of old-fashioned and she really has enjoyed the connection to the Morelands she had through her friend Sabrina. But with Sabrina on her honeymoon, she has no reason to see the family. Racking her brain, she remembers that she promised to drop off a book for one of the sisters-in-law, Olivia. While there, sister Anna has a vision that the rest of the family have been kidnapped. This sets off a series of events that lead Con and Lilah heading to her ancestral home where strange doings are happening.
A little bit better than the previous book but not much (both were good). I definitely connected more with Lilah who was smart and sharp and, generally, knew her own mind. Con was a little irreverent but generally about himself and his teasing Lilah never crossed into mean or creepy.

You have to love both Lilah Holcutt and Constantine Moreland. While Lilah tries to follow all the rules Con seem to follow none. After all he is a mad Moreland. Turns out that in spite of all that Lilah tries to do her family is just as mad. This has a big touch of the paranormal (the other books in the series had some but not as much) while following the rules of historical romances. Lilah and Con tell their story with great dialog, with others and between the two. I was surprised by who turned out to be the villain. The afterward was a nice addition. It provided a window into action where we only saw the result. Nice to get the inside scoop. This is an interesting and fun series to follow.
