34 books42 followersI am originally from a small town in northeast Indiana. Typical introvert kid; closer to books than people — grew up with a fascination for horror novels (Stephen King, Dean Koontz) and medieval fantasy (Piers Anthony, R.A Salvatore).
In April of 1996, I moved out on my own to Phoenix, Arizona to find my own path.
On a personal level, I have been married to my wonderful wife, Erika since October 10th, 2012. I have two stepchildren, Jenna and Johnny, and a two-year-old baby girl, Jessiena.
I have completed my first novel, Consequences Within Chaos and will be extending the story in my upcoming sequel, The Bleeding Crown. Also on Amazon & Kindle, I have In Four Days: Horror Suspense Novella.

If people ever said "This is a MUST read", then I cannot say in any stronger words, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ! I was taken to lands of my own imagination through this incredible work, and I have never seen anything close to the creativity. I became very sure this WILL BE a MOVIE! It must for it is positively entertaining, engrossing, and transforms the reader to a place you have never been, but want to go again. I truly thank the author and pray for more books to be written, and YES the SEQUEL is a MUST Author Derek Barton!

“Consequences Within Chaos” by Derek Barton is an Epic Fantasy in 3 Acts. I would like to thank Derek for gifting me an e-copy of this book. Epic Fantasy has become one of my favorite genres to read. I love getting lost in an imagined world of magic and adventure. As far as this book is concerned it’s at the very top of that genre list, and one of my new favorites. The world building and the array of some of the most original and well thought out characters was brilliant. Not only was a world imagined for the front story, but a whole other world had to be imagined for the frequent episodes of Prince Taihven (if you read the book you will understand that). The only roadblock in reading fantasy is one's imagination, and this author has far exceeded the limits of mine. This read was intelligent and well thought out. The flow of the story was even and fast paced, with many things going on at once, but written in a way that was very easy to follow the plot. There were a lot of surprises, twist and turns, and a lot of action and adventure along the way. It was quite a journey...one that I will not soon forget. I look forward to reading more from Derek in the future. If you enjoy fantasy, this is a must read...you will not regret it I promise.

I had so much fun reading this book! right away you were taken to a different place filled with fantasy and magic! The imagery and and build up of the different characters is something I've missed from some more contemporary writers. The main characters take you on a roller-coaster of emotions that keep you turning the pages. Just as I finished reading, my husband took the book and I haven't seen it since! This book is worth stealing folks!!! take a sit and enjoy :)

First, I would like to say that fantasy books are not my preferred style of reading. The overalls story sounded intriguing so I wanted to give it a read. There are a few things I would like to cover in my review of this book that I found were unique. The detail in which each character was unfolded to the reader was perfect with timing and imagery . The character build up wasn't too much and didn't drone on like most authors do with their novels. The pace was steady in the beginning part of the book (about the first 22 pages) and really flowed well. After the first 22 pages is when the intrigue and action really starts to flow more. There was not a time while reading that I felt bored or confused as to what was happening. Again, I am not a fantasy genre person and most of previous reads in fantasy were filled with moments of not understanding or not enough detail to really get the 'scene' set. Consequences Within Chaos continually surprised me throughout the book and there were times where an amazing even was happening and then with perfect timing, the scene shifted back to another unveiling of the story. It is rare for me to get emotionally involved in a book but this one, this one really sucked me in. I guarantee this book will have you spellbound and always wanting more.

READ THIS BOOK!!! Excellent character development that doesn't drag on unnecessarily but also doesn't leave you feeling like you don't know enough about the characters. The way the author paints a mental picture for his readers is one of his (many) truly unparalleled talents. I felt like I was actually there along with each of the characters and sharing their experiences. If fantasy is your genre, and even if it isn't, I would definitely recommend this book! I have also read his blog and can honestly say that this author transcends many genres and is bound to be one of the greats along with Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Madeleine L'Engle and many others.

This was a very exceptional book. The story grabbed me immediately and I couldn't put it down until it was finished. I can't wait for the next installment and the prequel.

Author Derek Barton has created an amazing world with vibrant colors and characters. Scratch that, he has created layers of worlds that vary with colors, textures, sounds, and smells that make me wish I could spend a day or two exploring them (with a safe guide, of course).
The characters invoke strong emotions right from opening. I felt hate, love, terror and remorse, it is a roller coaster. I don't think I've ever smelled a setting while I was reading, but Mr. Barton does such a great job triggering imagination with his writing that I found myself wrinkling my nose as if the smells were all around me.
I have read through this book at least a half dozen times and recently purchased it for my Kindle so it is easier to carry around. If you enjoy fantasy fiction, I highly recommend reading this book.
I can't wait for the next!

First of all I would like to thank the Author and Goodreads for giving me the opportunity to win this title. I agree with a previous reviewer that this book is a must read! Derek is a very talented writer. I was instantly interested from the the very first page. I could not put the book down! Because of all the descriptive details that the author uses I felt that I was actually living in these characters worlds or in all theses different realms. I love having that feeling when I read a book, however very few books give me that sense. I would highly recommend this book as It was a fun read and I really enjoyed it! I can't wait for the sequel! I hope you keep writing Derek, and thanks again!

His brother and sister protagonists, Taihven and Letandra, make you question what is real and what isn’t. Packed with action and adventure, just when you think the story is going to zag, it zigs, and takes you to strange and wonderful places.

This book peaked my interest from beginning to end. The concept of leaving your body and entering other worlds intrigues me. I love how the line between good and evil is so fine, to the point that you could easily side with one side or the other and feel as if you are on the right side. At one point you feel sorry for the "evil" and disappointed in the "good" Love it!

let me tell you i haven't picked up a book in a long time. This book is by far a good read. take the time open the book and sit down and read it. Derek Barton did a great job with the book I greatly recommend the book to any one who is looking for a good read.

I very much like this action adventure book. The novel quickly draws you into its dark kingdoms. There are secrets whispered and you will want to seek out the answers. My favorite character in the story is the Princess Letandra. She is intelligent, brave, and kind. If you have read The Hobbit I would recommend CONSEQUENCES WITHIN CHAOS.

Wow, My imagination went wild. I did not see that coming. It was very vivid. An image of things not of this world. so enjoyed this read. It is a must if you have any imagination at all, it will devour you. Can't wait to start the next one.

As monsters threaten, the land is in peril as it becomes known the ruler is unbalanced and cannot tell reality from fantasy. Nicely written.
