Hellhound Hunt

Rate this book
Kit likes being a vampire in DC - the fey community doesn't care much about politics, and he's happy keeping a low profile. But a search for a missing demon gets seriously complicated when the Wild Hunt rolls into town, leaving behind a shape-shifting hellhound that only Kit can handle. Things aren't any easier for the hellhound: she's finding out that wearing a human shape is a little more complicated than just walking on two feet instead of four. They'll have to learn to trust each other in order to find Kit's friend and reunite the hellhound with her pack.

I received this book as a goodreads giveaway so thank you to the Author for sending it to me. When I first opened the package, I was excited simply because of the type of paper the cover of the book was made out of, it felt a little like soft skin instead of regular paper. I know, stupid, but none the less I thought it added a little creepy effect to it.

I went into this book very excited, really very much wanting to enjoy this book and leave a great review for the author as thanks for sending it to me.

I'm sorry to say I could not finish it, I tried. I even out of thanks to the author forced myself to read up to page 50. I made a few notes as I went along.

My first note after reading chapter 1, "What is even happening?" The first chapter was action packed, I think, but what had happened I'm not even to sure.

Anyways I kept going, it felt as though I was reading the first rough draft of a book. Things were all over the place. It also seemed as if this book was not proof read before going out for printing, with sentences like "She might be a New-Ager but she stared me down, then, and there’s not many who would dare do that." as well as "I I looked desperately around for Finn"...

I usually like fast paced books but this was more than fast paced, it seemed to skip parts, one example I have is one of the characters goes missing, the main characters and his friend(s) are discussing it. Next sentence, “Nope,” I said, and ranged around the city for a couple nights, but there was no sign of him." Then as a big event seemed to be taking place, the Wild Hunt. They are discussing it, and a few sentences later, he's just flown over to them.

I really did try to follow along, but the characters were not described, things just seemed to randomly jump around and be incoherent. I also found it hard to read, the words didn't always flow in a natural way, as if reading it aloud would sound weird to anyone listening.

One other gripe I had was with the main character, he seemed to be a badass or wanted to a badass, but with his dialogue being like this, “I. Er. I don’t even know your name.”, he was also appearing to be all over the place. The other characters felt like nameplates, sort of like a blank canvas with just a blur for a face, I didn't "see" what they looked like or how they were as characters.

To give the author credit, the books premise sounded like it could be interesting to read, with vampires, fey, and demon's but I just could not follow along. If reading this, for your next book try to slow it down a little bit, give some details, make the characters stand out in more than just having a name and possibly have someone proof read it so there aren't so many errors that take you out of the immersion of the book. Sorry I couldn't give a better review :(

I realize this is a self published book however authors should still spend the extra time and money to edit. Sometimes these errors are distracting when reading.

Trying to review without spoilers...the story was all over the place I found myself backtracking to see if I missed something which I didn't and the perspective changes and you don't know whose point of view it is. Other authors who've done it like this had either titled the chapter so you know who is speaking and/or telling the story or they use a different font (like italicized or something) so you know who is speaking. I did finish the book, the only thing kept me going was it was a short book and if possible I do want to finish reading. It's a good start for a new author and the story left off where there may be a sequel. I hope the author takes into consideration all of this when writing the sequel. It has great potential for a 5 star sequel.

This book was fast-moving, exciting, funny, and well-written. It's not the kind of book I normally read, and there may have been references I would better understand if I read more in this genre, but that did not detract from my enjoyment. (Perhaps not for the squeamish, however.)

I won a (personally signed!) copy from the author/publisher on Goodreads.com and I was so excited to see that personal touch, with my name inside the cover, when it came in the mail!

The plot description has me itching to sit down and read NOW. This is going straight to the top of my TBR stack. Stay tuned...

ETA 8-7: Loved the story! I was glued to the pages right up til the very end. Although there's good resolution, there's also clearly room for a sequel and I hope one is in the works.
