Obscured was C. M.'s debut novel. What began as a way to spend her free time slowly transitioned into a passion for writing. She's currently working on her fifth novel. The best is yet to come!

C. M. is a mother of three. She grew up in the sunshine state of Arizona with a love of reading and an ambition to write. But never took her writing seriously until after the birth of her first child. After that, she took up writing more seriously in her spare time and hasn't stopped since.

*I got this book from the publisher for an exchange of a honest review*

This book went from a 5-star read to a 2-star read....

The thing that bother me the most was the girl, Abby, she was annoying and always giggles. What kept me reading? Well, the fact that it’s a quick read is appealing, but honestly I only read the first half of book then gave up. I was pushing myself to read more but I just couldn't. I started to skim because it got too much. (I really skipped a lot)

There’s a lot of “nothingness” going on. There’s a lot of random dialogue and random scenes. I understand it’s for character development, but I also wanted something that would draw me in.

I understand the five star reviews and why people loved this one so much. Please don’t take my rating/opinion for what it is :)

I received this from the author in exchange for an honest review.

**Also published on my YA Book Blog.

I had to start and stop and start this book about half a dozen times. I kept trying to tell myself "It's nust a slow starter" or "I'm just not ready to start something new" but now I know the truth.

This book is terrible. I wish it were otherwise, but it's just not.

I'll start with the plot. Convoluted. Start with contemporary YA rom, then add a little thriller, then BAM swich to paranormal. Which, okay, fine, sometimes people can pull it off. Sometimes. When the writing is awesome and the plot is inspired and the characters are amazing. None of which was true here. By the time we get to the paranormal stuff you're so bored and frustrated that you just don't care. Kill Abby! Put her out of my misery! And Eli? WTF mate?

The plot jumps around, filling in gaps.with a bunch of random crap, and meaningless, boring "and they had waffles for breakfast! Again." And what's with the pizza obsession? Don't this kids know what grease does to acne? Everything that happens seems so... boring. And uninterested. Like, girl's night? Cool, except it's all "and we tots look awesome!" I don't want to read about that. And WHY did she want to go out with the murderer? And doesn't she know stalkers aren't sexy?

And we dive into this story with a list of characters that make you cringe. We start with a super boring girl who meets a stereotypical jock who apparently murdered someone. But that's okay cause she STILL wants to date him. And then we've got the love triangle, sort of, and the Plain Jane who is Virtuous and Boring but everyone Loves Her. For no apparent reason. Then we've got obsessive stalker boy and BFF who is only there because every Main Girl needs a BFF. And don't even get me started on the completely droll anx ultimately worthless Super Chipper parents. Um, no.

And then the writing itself. It was all... Boring. In the sense that there was very little style or variety. It was basic and there was a lof of summary and even more info dump. Like half the book is info dump. Most of which you can skip over and still follow the limited plot without much difficulty. I kept wondering why the last hundred pages even existed other than to torment me...

Honestly, I wish I had liked.this because I'm tired of knocking novels. I want to give a good review. But you gotta earn it and this one didn't. So I'm sorry to say that at 1.2 stars, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Adorable read. Abby thinks she just normal, but that's not to be. The family moves to Arizona and the fun begins. Suspense and coming of age all together. Loved it.

I loved the story, all the twists and turns and the action definitely the action, it had me wanting to read more and more so much so that I didn't stop reading the book from the moment I picked it up to the moment I finished it. It was an enthralling story, a love story no less but with action and paranormal thrown in for good measure. I have to admit thought, this story was a little stilted for me, I found it was like the author was trying to fit so much into the book that they hadn't thought how to connect it properly it was very much "this happened and then this and then and then" but thankfully it still didn't put me off reading it because the story itself was strong.

Well the characters of this story, hmm what can I say? They seemed a little two dimensional, it made it hard to connect with them although not impossible, I found it hard to follow conversational scenes with the characters as they spoke a little too formally for friends, it seemed strained sometimes. Although I did very much enjoy the connection between the two main characters and the way it was described subtly and overtime rather than just completely blurted out there, the insta-love hmm wasn't too bad as it wasn't completely out of the blue but it was a little cringe worthy at times.

Overall I definitely enjoyed this story, although it seems a little under developed and not fully formed yet I did enjoy it, I would be interested based on this story to read more of the authors work and hopefully they create a sequel to this because that I'd definitely be interested in reading.

A Great Paranormal Read
I liked this book, it was an interesting paranormal premise. Once I got into the story I didn't want to put it down. Abby is a 16 year old girl dealing with the divorce of her parents, and being uprooted and getting a brand new start thanks to her mother. Despite her fears about her new life she makes three friends right away at school. One of which I really liked at the beginning but ended up hating, and another who I also liked and just grew to like him more throughout the story, and a really peppy friendly girl named Bailey. Abby is kind of thrust into a world that she couldn't have imagined, a dangerous world to boot. There were so many aspects to the story, action, adventure, again a very interesting paranormal view, danger, love, friendship, and lots of twists and turns. The ending was killer and I can't wait to read the next book. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Obscured is a very interesting book and most of the time, entertaining. It was such a light read for me. It is very easy to read but the beginning is a little bit difficult to get into. I wish the story explored more on other characters rather than just the main characters(I really like Abby's parents and Bailey!). The main character can be quite indecisive but are actually likeable and feel real to me. While the pace sometimes can be a tad bit unsteady and sometimes focused too much on deatils, overall this book has a great premise and has potential. Such an enjoyable read. I'm quite interested in what is going to happen in the second book ;)

Sixteen year old Abby has moved into a new state with her mom for a fresh start. Her parents have divorced. She is not all that happy to be so far away from her dad and friends. On her first day of school she sees a boy that is so handsome that she has hope he is interested in her when he smiles at her. His name is Pete. She has also caught the eye of Eli who warns her to stay away from Pete. Why? Abby makes friends with Bailey. They double date with Pete and Eli. Abby discovers that Pete is physically abusive to herhen he doesn't like what is going on with her and Eli. Eli comes to her rescue often enough that she thinks Eli might be stalking her. Is he? Eli tells her he is a Protector. What is that? What will happen to Abby?

The story is written through Abby's eyes. You see her confusion about Pete and Eli. You experience her emotions. There is romance, mystery and supernatural experiences in this story. The story moves smoothly with a few surprises in it. As the story ends, I want to read the next book as I want to know more about Abby and what will happen next to her. This novel touches on many subjects such as parents divorce, domestic abuse and other topics. They are discussed lightly but seriously too. The subjects don't distract from the novel. Reading it was a good quick read.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book free from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I was not obliged to write a favorable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

This book started out really slow with the main character, Abby, talking about mundane stuff like high school, boyfriends, food, work, etc. It was not only after midway through the book, did some interesting events occur. We find out that Eli, Abbys best friend, is her Protector and has been assigned to protect her as part of his assignment. However, their relationship develops into a romantic one. Eli also is connected to Abby in that he can sense Abby's feelings and even know her whereabouts. They both fight against Pete, Abby's ex boyfriend, whom also was a Protector and is hellbent on destroying Abby and Eli. It's a rollercoaster for Abby since before hearing about Protectors, her life is normal and mundane but she knows that won't be the case no more.

This is a difficult one as it's not badly written, but in its current state it is rather bland. There's a lot of "they went there", "they did this", "they ate this" type commentary and it all gets a little mundane to be honest. I spent the first half of the book just waiting for something, anything, to happen. Abby, the main character, is so fickle it's untrue, she changes her mind constantly for no particular reason.

Also, it starts off as a YA romance book, but then suddenly (about 65% of the way through) swerves into paranormal territory. It doesn't quite work for me. I feel that this could have worked better if the author had left the paranormal out and written it as purely a relationship drama.

I received a free ebook from the author and I am voluntarily giving an honest review.

This book isn’t trying to write a “similar” story to ride the coattails of someone else’s success. The story is fresh, the writing is crisp and the characters are extremely appealing. It’s definitely a good read.

I received a copy of this story from Net Galley. Yay books!

Spoilers possible ahead...

I started off not liking this story, and it's not because of the story line or anything, but with the way Eli is at first, telling that she doesn't need to hang around Pete. Um, dude, she don't know you, no matter how long you've been dreaming of her.

It's just crazy.

After that initial disappointment, the story wasn't so bad. There are still some "huh?" moments that are hopefully answered in later stories.

So so

Was written well. But too many similarities to twilight. No vampires and werewolves, but the protectors with visions of the future.

This book overall I liked. I enjoyed the plot and the concept. I enjoyed some of the characters. I liked how this was character driven and that there was emotion and conviction in the characters.

There were twists and turns and danger that keeps you on the edge of your seat as Abby adjusts to her life in Arizona. Here is a girl whose mom moves her away from all she has ever known and now she is in danger. Danger she didn’t realize she was in. She has Eli wanting to be her friend and more but who doesn’t like all her choices. Particularly her desire to get close to Pete. Pete who is a wolf in sheeps clothing. He is the beginning of her issues I believe.

Eli is my favorite of everyone. He is so kind and sweet. I do hope that no one tries to change his disposition. For me he made this book. He was protective and mysterious but also kind and considerate. He befriended Abby and began to have more emotions for her as time went on but no matter what he was always there for her.

Abby is the character that I was iffy about. She is my bad. Her constant outbursts and only thinking of self didn’t always sit well. She was nice but she just was all over emotionally. She would jump on Eli about things and call him out but when Pete would do something and than apologize she stewed and than accepted it. Her actions towards her mom at times were meh. Overall she isn’t a bad character and I am sure her situation was caused her to be more emotional but still it didn’t make her sit well with me. I think that whatever she is needed to be protected for is also adding to her turmoil.

This was overall fast paced and kept your attention but everyone once in awhile it did drag. The details about homework or what she was cooking and why sometimes just weren’t needed. This is about a girl coming to terms with her parents divorce and trying to adjust to her new surroundings. She has nightmares that keeps her up and a protector who wants more than friendship. All the while she is in danger and no one really can understand why. Why Pete wants to be the way he is towards her no one can really know. The twists and turns will keep you on the edge as you delve into this interesting take on being mortal or having powers and being immortal. ABout protecting humans and why and falling in love even when you shouldn’t. Despite my reservations about Abby I couldn’t stop reading I wanted to know what would happen next and why Pete was the way he was. A good beginning to the series and interesting way to end where things aren’t really resolved but the characters aren’t really feeling tense about it so you get the sense that something may happen and you wonder what.

Still reeling from her parents’ recent divorce, sixteen year old Abby Martin is plagued by nightmares of the worst kind. Part of her is resentful that her mother chose to move them from Los Angeles to Arizona, far away from Abby’s father, but it is not long before she is grateful, having made some amazing new friends at Kinsley High School. When Pete Denali catches her eye, she is flattered by the sudden attention and flirtatious advances of the footballer which come her way, but is puzzled when a second boy, Eli, warns her to stay away from Pete. With rumors that Pete had murdered somebody and had a vicious temper, Abby promises Eli that she will be careful, but when Eli seems to be just seconds away every time she is in danger, Abby soon becomes afraid that Eli is her stalker. After Abby witnesses Pete’s extreme temper first-hand, she quickly turns to Eli for help, only to uncover a supernatural world which she never knew existed. With one person seemingly having all of the power and control in her life, Abby needs trust her instincts (which have let her down so many times), hoping that they will keep the people she loves safe from the terrifying dangers of her new world.

After starting at a slow and steady pace filled with calm, C.M. Boers’ tale of a typical sixteen year old girl suddenly takes its foot off the brakes. New characters are introduced into the fray, incredible friendships forged and unbreakable bonds are made. I was particularly amused at watching Abby’s recently divorced parents acting like children during a one week visit under the same roof, with jealousies aflame. It always amazes me how romance of any kind can change a person’s personality, bringing out the beast in us all, and transforming us from hot to cold in a flash. Abby’s relationships with Pete and Eli are no different, with emotions such as friendship, lust, anger and hate on supercharge. When supernatural elements were introduced, all traces of slow, steady and calm had vanished, leaving the reader speeding down an emotional highway filled with twists and turns that leave your head spinning. I very much enjoyed Obscured and am excited to learn that two more books in the series have been released. With C.M. Boers’ unique and entertaining writing style, giving an incredible story from a first person perspective, I fully recommend Obscured to fans of the Young Adult genre, blending action, drama, fun and suspense in this paranormal romance.

In ‘Obscured’ we meet Abby Martin. Abby is sixteen years old and has just moved with her mom to Arizona. Not only is she trying to get used to her new hometown, and her parents’ divorce, but she is also starting High School. Abby isn’t really looking forward to her new school and meeting new people, but on her first day in High School, Abby soon learns that there are a lot of nice people who want to be her friend.
One of the first people Abby meets is Eli, a mysterious guy who becomes her best friend almost form the beginning. But Eli has a strange request, he wants Abby to stay away from Pete. But Abby likes Pete from the very first moment he started talking to her, and nothing seems wrong with him.
But Abby soon learns to get used to her new life, but also that people can hide all kinds of stuff.

This book was a very nice read and I enjoyed every page. The main character Abby was immediately very likeable. Abby loves to read, and she is very serious about her schoolwork since she wants to get into an Ivy league college. Abby also seems to be very mature, she helps her mom out with cooking, always makes sure her mom knows where she is and she really tries to do her best at school.
Eli was also a character I really liked. He was really mysterious and seemed to keep some secrets from the very beginning, but somehow I felt like he could be trusted. The friendship Abby and Eli developed was just adorable and I really loved them.

The writing in this book is very prescriptive and easy to follow. This was good because I wanted to keep on reading, but at times it also felt like the story went a little to fast. Abby’s days are almost described to the detail, and although that was fun.. I sometimes wished the author didn’t write everything with so much detail, so the time wouldn’t need to go by so fast.
But this wasn’t so bad that I didn’t enjoy this book. Not at all!! This book was fun and I loved the characters and the unique turn this book took. This book definitely made me want to read more and more about Abbie and Eli.

I really hope there will be a next book, so the story of these characters can continue. I definitely want to read more.

Obscured by CM Boers, was in interesting and entertaining read. It was so enjoyable I had trouble putting it down to get back to reality. Here’s why….

There are very likeable characters involved in Abby and Eli, and a nemesis in Peter that has you liking him at first and then loathing him by the end.

Abby is a 16-year-old girl who is dealing with her parents divorce, moving away and a fresh new start courtesy of her mother. She comes across as a mature girl and seems wiser for her family’s experience, yet you can still feel the naivety of a 16-year-old girl shine through. Eli, Abby’s protector, is sweet and caring and is careful with her in terms of his true identity. When it comes to crunch time, we find out what he’s made of and his true strengths shine.

The writing is good, the story is unpredictable with a few twists, and as it’s told via Abby’s point of view you really feel like you are seeing and experiencing things as a 16-year-old. The paranormal element and the world-within-our-world felt believable to me as well.

My only dislike would be that I couldn’t really feel how much of a dangerous character Peter is. We have an incident very early on which spooks Abby, but this didn’t really have the punch for me that I feel it should have.

Overall, a very entertaining story that I found myself reading way past bedtime. Can’t wait for book 2!

*I was sent this book, non affliated review*

This was an interesting one for me. There were times where I thought this was a terrible book; it seemed very simple in writing style/vocabulary and the plot seemed very predictable. Then there were other times where it had a sophisticated and interesting vocabulary/writing style and was completely surprising.
I loved the characters especially Eli and I loved the idea of a protector its like guardian angel meets vampire meets mind reader. Pete was the kind of character you love to hate, so that was great.
I also loved the relationships. I liked the closeness of Abby and her dad.

Overall I would rate this a 3.75 because of its uncertain writing style and basicness. The incredible plot idea made up for it in great volumes and I am going to continue with this series.

Reread: I reread this because I thought I had under marked it before. I was wrong. The start and end are amazing, but in the middle it has a really bad lull that just really throws your for a loop. It makes it difficult to push through and I nearly gave up. I liked the characters, some of the logic was flawed but the overall it was generally enjoyable. I just wish the books turning point had more impact and more reasoning to it. Reread Review here: https://hawthornbookreviews.com/2020/...

Abby considers her life in California normal and boring. She is not altogether excited at having to move to Arizona when her parents split up. Despite her misgivings, she manages to make three friends on the very first day of school. Pete is a cute boy who she hopes will be more, but Eli tries to warn her about Pete’s terrible temper. And the fact that Eli believes Pete has actually killed someone is not encouraging at all. Then there is Bailey, a bubbly girl who Abby gets along just fine with.
While life seems to have picked up fairly well, Abby suddenly finds herself in a life threatening adventure where only her protector can save her. She must come to terms with the fact that people around her, are not exactly what they seem to be. There is immortality, strange visions and unknown powers in the world that she knows nothing about. She must trust her best friend Eli to help ease her into this new, and often dangerous world. Wonderful young adult read. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Only one point I must make, all the food described, specially breakfast meals, had me feeling hungry 

The story starts with Abby struggling with moving to a new state after her parents split up. New school, new friends and not getting to see her dad much due to distance, on top of it her mom seems to be completely absent as she too is adjusting to the new move, new job and new to dating again after the divorce. So the story follows how Abby handles things with the move and adjusting to the avid attentions of not just one, but 2 boys. Little does she know how complicated it's really going to get.

This story is written as a young adult novel and I felt that it wasn't bad, but definitely could have been a fantastic story with a few tweaks. There were some parts that I just couldn't get into when reading it and my overall feeling was it was an okay read that could be a great read. But after seeing it was the author's debut novel, I don't doubt that her talents will get better with time. She writes to relate to young adults very well, and you often do feel part of the high school scene.

Hard to get into until 2nd half

I'm a huge reader. Love YA novels. This one was okay, but simply not one of my favorites. I felt like the wrong details were mentioned and others ignored. Each time she went to the bathroom, we were told that she washed her hands. However, we never found out why her mom continued to seem distant. I also don't know any 16 year olds just beginning high school. I did get into the second one half of the book. I felt our main female character lacked depth. I think this author shows a lot of promise and will check in on a future book. I thought I read this was her first novel. Kudos to her for making that happen!

Please note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
From the beginning, the readers know this book is going to be full of mysteries. Even so, we see the characters in high school going about what normal high-schoolers do and this balances the novel from going too dark. Things don't go on too fast and you'd have to read through to find out and solve the mystery. With the other characters' personalities and histories remaining hidden, we become like the main character. It gets more intriguing as you go. I give Obscured 3 out of 5 stars.

Very interesting read. Once you start reading it will hold your attention until the end. Original story line and suspenseful ending. Some of the characters were not explained as much as I would have liked, but maybe that is coming in the next book :) Overall, very good product from a first time author.

I don't think I have read any books about the Protectors so this was a nice change of pace. I like how it wasn't insta-love between the MCs. The friendship built into more. I didn't care much for Pete but that's what made the story so interesting. I can't wait to read book 2 so I can find out what happens to Pete.
