The Love Theorem by Camilla Isley - A STEMinist Romantic Comedy Novel

Camilla is an engineer who left science behind to enter the whimsical realm of romantic fiction.

She writes contemporary rom-coms. Her characters have big hearts, might be a little stubborn at times, and love to banter with each other. Every story she pens has a guaranteed HEA that will make your heart beat faster. Unless you're a vampire, of course.

Camilla is a cat lover, coffee addict, and shoe hoarder. Besides writing, she loves reading—duh!—cooking, watching bad TV, and going to the movies—popcorn, please. She's a bit of a foodie, nothing too serious. A keen traveler, Camilla knows mosquitoes play a role in the ecosystem, and she doesn't want to starve all those frog princes out there, but she could really live without them.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Camilla Isley.)

“Jake.” I inhale deeply. “When I discovered you were getting married, my world collapsed.”

This was an adult contemporary romance novel, following one woman as her life went in two different directions.

Gemma was an okay character, and it was clear how deep her feelings were for Jake. It was also nice how much she cared about her friend, that she’d sacrifice her own happiness to help her.

The storyline in this followed Gemma as her life went down two different paths after one life-altering situation. In one life she went and stopped her ex’s wedding and told him how she felt, and in the other she went to her friend’s wedding instead. It was enjoyable to see these two different futures unfold, and I liked the mystery of who Gemma would end up with in the end, and whether the two futures would somehow merge.

The ending to this was pretty happy, and I was satisfied with the way things ended.

This was an okay-novel.

The concept is unique, I can definitely give it that. Having two parallel-running story-lines with the same characters but different choices, intrigued me a lot at first. That is, until I noticed the author keep going back to the same things in both storylines.
Although I do get the why, it got on my nerves she sometimes uses the exact same descriptions and dialogues in both story lines.

The other issue I had was conversations sometimes feeling very forced and the main character having the tendency to have a childish whine-moment once in a while.

It was a cute read, but it wasn't really anything special to me.

WOAH. This is one of the most unique books that I have read in a long time. Camilla Isley has outdone herself with this novel and I couldn't be more pleased with how it all turned out. What do you do when you have to make a decision? This is the essential plot of this book. One woman. Two life choices. Each with different endings. So what would she choose, and what happens when she gets there?

This book is AMAZING. I was a bit concerned at first thinking that the plot would be confusing as every other chapter features one of the life choices, and the next chapter the other. But this was NOT confusing at all. Perhaps its because it is so well written that we can easily follow along, or maybe its because we need to ALSO CHOOSE which path would be better suited. Either way, it's not a confusing story, rather one that is so interesting that you will be hooked.

Anyway, I have now read a few of Camilla Isley's novels and I have to say that each and every time I have been impressed. Now I can't wait to see what the second book in the series is like... I am so excited! ~ Highly recommended!

Love Connection by Camilla Isley

GENRE: Romance Comedy
NARRATION: First Person (heroine)
BOOK DETAILS: Standalone but book #1 of a connecting series First Comes Love
AUDIO AVAILABLE? Yes - Whispersync for Voice-enabled

THE STORY:
Have you ever been at crossroads and not known which direction your meant to take?
Your choice being so crucial it will literally be life changing?
Have you ever wondered how your life would have turned out if you chose the other direction? Would the outcome inevitably be the same no matter your path? Believing your destiny has already been written and fate will guide you back to where you belong?

This is a story very cleverly and well written in a sliding doors scenario, following two parallel stories of Gemma Dawson and her journey back to her true love and happily ever after.

One woman, two choices, two separate journeys, one destined ending.

description

MY THOUGHTS:
This story evokes some pretty relatable emotions for its readers. Doubt, indecisions, regret and questions. The writer grabbed my attention within the first few pages and I was completely engaged throughout the entire story. The good use of witty humour lightened the sadness throughout the story. You would think that all the back and forth between the two separate journeys would create some confusion, but Camilla’s talented writing ability created a smooth flowing and easy to follow story.

I have to mention that this is a very G rated romance. I needed more along the M rated romance though to feel their chemistry, passion and pain on a deeper level. Adding some intimacy or sweet bedroom moments would have helped connect the character’s motives to their emotions, therefore enhancing the intensity of their love for one another, making it more realistic.

Jake came across as a little detached and lacking in character depth for me because his presence wasn’t strong enough throughout the story. Yes, he is kind and sweet and easy going but who is he really? Not enough of his personality shone through for me to attach myself to him.

Overall,This was a really enjoyable and engaging story about friendship, the significance and consequences of our choices, true love and undeniable destiny.

I received an audio copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

MY RATINGS: (All ratings are out of 5)
BLUSH RATING: 0
ROMANCE RATING:4
PLOT RATING: 5
OVERALL: 4 Blushing Stars

description

Narrated by: Audra Cook
Length: 6h 11m

Initially I was completely thrown off by the robotic tone of the narrator, but after a while I adjusted and the audio flowed a little easier. Overall the dialogue parts for Gemma and Amelia were fine, but her narration of a male voice and narrative sections were off putting.

There were external sounds added (popping popcorn and cat purrs and meows) which I didn’t feel were necessary, and to be honest sounded weird.

Unfortunately, Audra’s voice just didn’t work for me, which is a shame because I really enjoyed the story.

AUDIO RATING: 3/5

This book caught my attention as I think we’ve all wondered how our lives could have turned out completely differently had we made other choices and in Love Connection you get to see how Gemma’s life could be by making both choices and seeing her two very unalike lives side by side. She can either attend her best friends wedding as the maid of honor, or crash her exes wedding and reveal her true feelings. Which choice does she really make? And will the outcome really change much or is fate guiding her to the same place either way?

Gemma is such a fun character. In fact, all of the characters here are loads of fun. Besides Gemma you have her best friend Amelia. The two are quite the pair and they have a deep friendship full of humor and true understanding. Several of their scenes made me giggle and after finishing such a heavy novel a bit of lighthearted fun was exactly what I needed. Jake is Gemma’s ex and the one that got away. He’s moved on and is getting married on the same day as Amelia, hence Gemma’s huge decision. Lastly there is Richard who is the new man in Gemma’s life. He is utterly charming and quite the catch but Gemma can’t quite seem to completely let go of her past and embrace her future.

It was really fun and interesting to read this one. Every chapter alternates between both choices; one chapter with Gemma heading to Amelia’s wedding and the other to Jake’s. I was dying to see how it would all end and I was not disappointed, although I’m rather eager for book two in the series now! Filled with witty banter, humor and heart Love Connection is a delightful read that will make you feel good and leave you with a smile on your face. In fact, I smiled most of the way through this book and still am!

Chick-lit homage to the 1998 British movie, Sliding Doors

Three years ago, attorney Gemma broke up with physician Jake, the man she had been in a committed relationship with continuously since high school. She decided that he did not respect her career as much as his own when Jake accepted a job in San Francisco rather than some other location that they would mutually decide upon. Rather than having a mature, adult discussion to iron out their differences, she abruptly relocated to London, in order to get as far away from Jake as possible and to be near Amelia, her BFF since childhood, who lived and worked there. Jake tried desperately get back together with Gemma, but she refused to accept any of his phone calls, emails, or texts. However, his efforts stopped short of flying to London to confront her in person. Then suddenly, when Gemma finds out, through mutual connections in the small town they grew up in outside of Chicago, that he is getting married, she freaks out. The fact that he will soon be legally tied to another woman, and presumably forever out of her reach, causes her to, at long last, realize that stubborn pride has kept her from admitting all this time that she has never stopped loving Jake, and she made a huge mistake when she walked out on him. She decides that Jake is the love of her life, and she will never love anybody as much as she loves him. Gemma thinks quite seriously about flying thousands of miles and interrupting his marriage near San Francisco, California. However, by major coincidence, on the same day that he is getting married, her BFF Amelia is also getting married in Chicago, and Gemma is her maid of honor. Unable to make up her mind, Gemma has purchased a plane ticket for the destinations of both weddings. In an homage to Sliding Doors, a British film from 1998, the story then splits into two alternate universes. In one universe, Gemma goes to California, and in the other universe, she goes to Chicago. From then on, each chapter alternates between Chicago Gemma (CG) and San Francisco Gemma (SFG).

In the CG universe, Gemma is angsting at an airport bar in the JFK airport in NYC as to whether she will fly to Chicago or San Francisco when, by major coincidence, a flight attendant that Amelia's fiance has been having a year-long affair with sits down next to Gemma at the bar. Once Gemma realizes that Amelia is about to marry a lying, cheating jerk, she chooses Chicago and despairingly gives up on her last chance to win back Jake. She shows up at Amelia's wedding, makes a huge scene while informing Amelia that her fiance has been two-timing her, and she and Amelia escape the wedding and go together on Amelia's honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where they spend an entire week binge drinking. Then they move in together back in London.

In the SFG universe, Gemma heads to Jake's wedding, breaks it up and steals the groom. Then he moves to London to be with her, and from then on out, this timeline involves Gemma and Jake being blissfully happy together.

Let me stress that all reviews inevitably are nothing but a personal opinion. So let me start by saying that I did not like the movie Sliding Doors. Primarily because it is a really grim movie. But most especially because the concept of alternate universes in science fiction is not something I enjoy and, unfortunately, nothing about the structure of this novel convinced me to change my opinion.

In addition, the evergreen trope of the reunion romance is not one that I ever enjoy unless there is a really good reason for the breakup that does not make either partner look like a jerk. The backstory of the breakup in this novel puts Gemma in a really bad light and predisposed me to strongly dislike her. We never get Jake's point of view in this novel, but I wasn't impressed with the depth of his love for Gemma either in that he stopped at unanswered phone calls, texts and emails and did not chase her to England to confront her, in order to either win her back or get closure and move on fully with his life.

The Prime Directive of the romance genre is: Thou shalt convince the reader that the FMC and MMC are soulmates. Which of course, sadly, only a minority of actual romance novels ever truly achieves. And, of course, this is not at all an expectation for chick lit, especially British chick lit, such is this novel, which specializes in claustrophobically shoehorning an entire novel into the single POV of an emotionally stunted FMC. The romantic interest in chick lit is never an actual MMC, because we never get his POV, and therefore never get to know him deeply. The typical focus of chick lit is that the FMC has a very strong growth arc across the length of the novel from passive, pathetic doormat to assertive, self-responsible, kick-ass MC, and the reward for her good behavior is a handsome, financially solvent, adoring, Cinnamon Roll love interest. In my opinion, this novel is definitely not a romance novel, and it also fails as a chick-lit novel, because there is no real growth arc in either of the two universes. In the SFG universe, Gemma's love interest, Jake, falls into her lap with no growth arc on her part from spineless passivity to assertiveness. The type of bold action that typically occurs toward the very end of a chick-lit novel is, in fact, offered at the very beginning, when she breaks up Jake's wedding, and during the rest of the novel, there is no conflict within that relationship at all. It exists as an extended happily ever after (HEA) epilogue tacked onto a one-scene vignette.

In the CG universe, there is no growth arc either. At the urging of Amelia, Gemma apathetically slides into a romantic relationship with Richard, an advertising executive, who is almost a clone of Jake in his presentation. He is every bit as much of a handsome, adoring Cinnamon Roll as Jake. And he is such a mellow, non-confrontational guy, that he is very easily disposed of when he becomes inconvenient to the resolution of this portion of the novel.

Basically, if one were to describe this story as a morality play, the moral of the story is that it doesn't matter which path you take, life is predestined, and you're going to end up in the same place no matter which path you choose. Which in many ways is the ideal philosophy for the type of passive protagonist that most chick lit specializes in.

For all the above reasons, I ended up skimming most of this book, because it is filled with endless scenes of boring lethargy on Gemma's part in both timelines, which I did not find remotely interesting.

For readers who don't like descriptions of sex on the page, as is typical for this author, all of the sex between Gemma and Jake is closed bedroom door. In addition, the sex between Gemma and Richard is implied rather than demonstrated by so much as a single passionate kiss that is overtly shown. Which I suppose is a kind of sop to romance fans, such as myself, who despise romantic triangles.

I obtained a Kindle copy of this book on sale for free through Amazon. It is also available in ebook format on Hoopla.

(Audiobook Review)

I received Love Connection in a giveaway and found it to be a fun romantic comedy that makes you wonder about the choices you would make to find happiness.

The story deals with Gemma Dawson, who is an attorney from London. She sits at a Chicago airport bar, holding two tickets while contemplating if she should fly to her best friend’s wedding as the maid of honor or crash her ex-boyfriend’s wedding in California. After a few drinks, she eavesdrops on another heartbroken woman who happens to be a flight attendant. She discovers that her best friend’s fiancé has been carrying affair with this woman for over a year. The other alternative is that she’s never forgotten Jake, the love of her life and soulmate and needs to confess all to him before it’s too late. Thus begins the “What If” and the vignettes on each path that she chooses to get to her HEA.

The audiobook of Love Connection by Camilla Isley flowed nicely into a well-written romance that had very entertaining characters, comical moments and serious dialogues between Gemma and those around her. It was light-hearted and a bit of a short novella on the “What If”.
The only drawback to this listen was the narration. I did not feel that the choice of narrator suited this story. The voice was a bit dry and did not punctuate the exclamatory parts in the story…i.e., parts that should have made you feel excitement or anger were not accentuated when needed.
I was thankful for receiving this audiobook giveaway and I look forward to listening dependent on narration or reading more form Ms. Isley. My rating would have been higher if not for the narration.

While I thought the idea was a really good one, I didn't like the story that much.

I found it hard to like Gemma and the messages from the story. I couldn't see how that made sense.

I liked 'Opposites Attract' and will continue reading Isley's books. But this one wasn't just for me.

OMG! Take Sliding Doors wrap it in a book and make it ten times better and more hilarious and you'll end up with Love Connection. POW!

I LOVED this book. The two parallel stories were so original and even when events overlapped it was amazing how the author gave it nuances to make each chapter unique. I couldn't put this book down! I wanted to know what would happen and I kept guessing wrong, I was hooked until the very end. If I could give it ten stars I would...

Flawless,Enthralling,Irresistible!!!Loved it!

I don't know how to express how perfect was this book without reveal too much ruining your reading experience.

I was afraid that the plot would have been too intricate to follow and enjoy but I was so WRONG because the author made an amazing job.
Everything was perfectly developped, all the characters were well thought and I loved how things turned out in the end.

I can't wait to read Camilla Isley next novel.

This is the first of three stories by this author that I received an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I was in the mood for swoon-worthy chick lit and this seemed to fit the bill. The plot concept was intriguing. A woman has 2 plane tickets - one to her best friend’s wedding and another to her ex-boyfriend/soul mate’s wedding - and must choose which road to go down. Does she choose loyalty to her friend or does she crash her exe’s wedding to tell him her true feelings before it’s too late? The story portrays both choices so we get to know what happens in each situation. What sounded like a wild ride was actually mundane and dull. This story had tons of potential! But where things went off the rails for me was the lack of a plot arc in one of the scenarios, which made it uneventful; too much dialogue, which detracted from the emotional depth aspect; and no clear antagonist, which meant there was very little internal/external conflict and no character growth/transformation. The end message was too simple. There are many 4 and 5 star reviews for this book so there is clearly a niche. I think readers who enjoy light cozy romance books will get more from this than I did. I need more emotional depth in my women’s fiction.

Cute book and interesting concept with the whole "how would one choice affect your life?" The characters were rather one-dimensional though, and I kind of wish that it didn't have the whole "soul mates" theme going on with the ending being the same for either choice. I mean, I get the "it was meant to be" thing, but it just puts a damper to the fact that the choice was supposed to alter her life, since it's basically saying that not much would have changed after all.

This was such a fun feel-good story about a woman whose life splits and begins running on parallel tracks based on which choice she makes. Go to her best friend’s wedding in Chicago where she is the maid of honor or go to California and crash her ex’s wedding. This story gives the reader a front row seat to see how each decision plays out. I absolutely loved it and both scenarios were interesting to see.

This author drafts interesting stories with characters that are so easy to relate to. I liked Gemma immediately and empathized with her situation. She and Jake were each other’s first love but unfortunately things ended badly and now he’s getting married. I understood her need to stop his wedding, but she made a commitment to her best friend to be maid of honor at her wedding which is happening on the same day.

Both choice scenarios played our realistically and I loved that there was no absolute right choice as both came with challenges, repercussions and rewards. I honestly couldn’t decide how I would have chosen in Gemma’s place.

My Final Verdict: Overall, this was a charming and entertaining read. I highly recommend this story to readers of chick-lit and romantic comedies as well as people who often wonder what would’ve happened had they chosen this over that.

I absolutely loved this book. What I love most about Camilla Isley, is that she has this ability to not only write a story you can not put down. But she is able to add the romance , the comedy , and the drama is a "clean" way.

This book has so many great elements. One of those elements is the dynamic between two BFF Amelia and Gemma. They really are my favorite. The way these two stand by each other, love each other and is there through good and bad is AMAZING. It is one of my favorite BFF duos I have ever read! They are hilarious despite what is going on. I know y'all will just adore them.

There are also three men you will fall in love with. Dylan, Jake and Robert. Even though the story maybe different for all three of these guy. I certainly loved being apart of their story. Like I said before this book is full of surprise elements and twist and turns, that give a good dose of what ifs and fate that will make your heart full! This is a #mustread

This book left me all warm and fuzzy. It's the perfect mix of young love, new love... regrets and rediscoveries... with an amazing friendship on the side and an incredibly cute rescue kitty... all told in a super original writing format (with 2 parallel stories is like reading Sliding Doors but no one dies of course and there's a happily ever after in both finales)

So many things to say! Okay, first- I’ve listened to several Isley books at this point and even if I haven’t loved them all I’ve most certainly loved the experience of listening to each one. Cause, ya know, sometimes you just can’t really get behind/relate to the scenario but you still love that classic Isley writing style. She is my go to author anytime I’m feeling extra bummed about romance and relationships. (Convinced true love- of the dating variety- only exists in a Camilla Isley novel at this point😂)

All that being said, I HATE alternate reality storylines. I never know how it’s going to be set up- will one story like be the “real story”, are we going to end right where we started and it’s all been a dream (the worst option), or are the two realities going to morph together somehow? Also changing realities every chapter was confusing af on audio, I kept having to back it up to the chapter titles for dates and times, especially as we got closer to the end of the book.

Now, the way this one goes is that they morph together, and I understand the point (I actually really like the way it’s written about it being in the stars/fate). The whole point that is they were destined to be together and any other scenario would have ended the same way, with them finding each other again. BUT, I’m still like, okay- but is this the timeline with the cat? Do you guys still have the cat?? Oh no, if you DO have the cat then Amelia had her heartbroken. Etc etc. I finally settled on, maybe they don’t have the cat…yet. Maybe they haven’t met Cici or the kitten yet. (I know this is such a minor thing to be hung up but I’m always getting attached to the animals. And that scene where Cici waited for Jake and nudged the kitten to him? 😭 😭 absolutely heartbreaking.

I was pleasantly surprised at the pacing of this novel. I felt like it went quickly, sometimes skipping months ahead, but always keeping both realities in line with each other. Sometimes, things were repeated but I don’t think it was excessive or too repetitive. However, I DO feel like we heard the phase/wording of “it saved us a divorce down the road” in relation to Jake and Sharon’s wedding a lot. I mean, a lot. Jake said it, Gemma thought it. Sharon said it. In both realities.😅 it was just a bit much… Also, I know this is a romantic wedding comedy but man, does any one else feel like we went through a lot of weddings?

Sometimes the book was very “insta-love” feeling, but Camilla’s wit and cheeky tongue always quickly made me forget about this. There is a Harry Potter reference in here (boo JKR) but it even took me a minute to connect it, a weird little stretch if you’re really not thinking about it. Amelia says that Gemma is “such a nerd” and honestly it checks out with the comment. But thinking back on it, I’m not sure it’s even a necessary component to the story. There is also a Ross Geller/Friends comparison but that made me laugh out loud. If you know, you know.

Oh! And can we all just take a moment to enjoy that my favorite airport bar tender is in this book too? I’ve always loved this character and I adore the fact that he’s in the very first one in this collection too. 🥰

This is a very easy read/listen. It’s easy to get swept up in it. I don’t have many complaints, but I feel like since I actually hate the premise of the story I should take a star away- despite actually really liking how it all worked out.

Ok guys, I just finished this book and am sorting through amazing emotions like joy. There's sadness, happiness, laughing and crying at the same time.

I was intrigued starting at chapter 2 when I realized that you see both option she could choose. I felt embarrassed with Gemma as she had to cancel a wedding, looking like hell, after riding on a hay/chicken transporter. Laughed my ass off at her inner conversations with herself and had a hard time to decide which way would be my choice. Once I liked one option better and loved the new characters introduced the other path came running back with some golden points in his pocket, like a mother-in-law who just rocks!

I loved that there were a lot of movie examples, for certain situation. It just gave you the perfect idea for that scene and was hilarious as hell. Just saying Sex-and-the-city and 27-Dresses vibes going on here! ;)

Getting closer to the end it even got a bit mysterious because of a special bachelorette/hen party activity. By then I was wondering if Gemma would be dreaming or even living both lives. :D

The ending just took my breath away and I finally could decide what's best for all. Crying over how cute and romantic the two worlds are combined I can just recommend this book to all romantic birds out there who love not only to cry but to laugh full of joy!!

All in all I really liked this book and am so glad I got to read it. Thanks at the author and goodreads again for this amazing giveaway prize!!

Have you ever been at a crossroad and wondered which path to take? Camilla Isley explores this dilemma in The Love Connection. It’s quite an interesting concept to write side by side stories in the same novel.
Gemma, the main character, has two airline tickets in her possession – one will take her to her best friend’s wedding and the other to her ex-boyfriend’s wedding, a man she never stopped loving. In one story, she chooses to attend her friend’s wedding in order to stop her from marrying a philandering man. In the other story, she goes to stop the wedding of her old love and plead for him to choose her instead.
There are a lot of amusing moments and some of it you know could never happen in the real world. But that is what romantic comedies are for – to delve into a world of romantic fantasy and laugh over unlikely situations.
The Love Connection was more than a simple romance. I found myself wondering about the paths I’ve had to choose and where I would be if I had made different choices. Would fate and destiny intervene and land me where I am today? Or would my life be completely different? These questions will be answered by the end of the book.
I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated by Audra Cook. The narration was done very well. Ms. Cook spoke clearly and did a nice job varying the voices. Her execution was enjoyable and pleasant.
I would definitely read or listen to another book by this author.

Stormi originally read this for the blog and rated it 5 Boundless stars.  When Isley approached us about reviewing the audiobook I decided to take it since Stormi doesn’t like audiobooks and I love them.

This story is reminiscent of the Gwyneth Paltrow movie Sliding doors.  There are two choices that happen and two different stories with the same character that take place in different timeline/dimension.  The stories are sweet, clean and sappy.  Much like a Julia Roberts romantic comedy, Runaway Bride comes to mind.  The theme of the stories is to follow your heart.

I would have enjoyed this book more had I read it.  I listen to a lot of audiobooks; I typically am listening to one every day, so I am pretty picky about narrators.  A narrator will make or break the audiobook.  Cook’s narration of this story didn’t flow.  I could tell she was reading the story; she didn’t bring any life or zest to the characters.  Her narration fell flat for me, her pacing was off, and there was no deviation from one character to the next.

Overall I am giving this audiobook 3 Boundless stars.  The narrator would get less, and the book would get more.

Wow this book was so original---

Gemma is at the airport she must decide if she wants to crash her ex's wedding or be made of honor for her BBF as she planned...

In chapter one she makes a choice... In chapter two a plane arrives on time instead of being delayed as in chapter one and Gemma has a chance encounter that makes her take the opposite choice!

WOW!

After that, is one chapter of each storylines. It was amazing. I loved them both (a little Vampire Diaries of me). I was never confused and I adored both endings!

Gemma Dawson is at the airport, staring at two plane tickets to two different cities. Two different weddings. Two possible futures. She’s at a crossroads.
Be maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding or crash her ex’s?

This is a romantic comedy that takes the "what if?" to the next level.
It's the story of Gemma, Jake, Amelia and Richard. Two couples, two storylines, two decisions and how many different outcomes?

This is about love, friendship, life choices, and the search for happiness. It's a funny read, maybe not memorable, but it can fit the list of the "feel good books".
