As a full-time working Ma-Ma, I often do not have the time (nor make the time) to sit and read a book. I believe it is important to learn from experience, but also through others. This book hits the nail on the head...I can pick it up here and there for 5minutes or 30minutes+ at a time to read and/or complete one of journaling activities, it is easy to read, and I can completely identify with the book's content during the growth of my children. Thank you for taking the time to write this informative and helpful book!

After the first half of this book, I really struggled with it. Although the author makes many solid points throughout the book, a lot of the information is actually contradicting. She makes a point to say that we are not responsible for our children's behavior, and let them accept the natural consequences of their actions. For example, if they refuse to finish homework or study, do not come to their rescue, let them receive the bad grade as a natural consequence. However, she then explains to connect consequences to the behavior... such as, if they do not wish to finish their homework, they'll have to focus on getting it finished instead of having fun with friends. Like, what? So which are you actually supporting?? I stopped reading after this happened a handful of times. It's difficult to want to take someone's advice when they're continually contradicting themselves. There are better books on parenting techniques, I would suggest you skip this one.

I have followed this book with the author from its inception. It is in a class of its own. It is more about self knowledge than 'self-help'. The over arching theme is when you know better you do better. There are practical insights in every chapter. The book does not have to be read from front to back. Each chapter is stand alone and can read and re-read as needed. I consider "Mothering with Courage" a mindful, practical parenting reference book somewhat like the approach taken by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Really worth having on your shelf.

I enjoyed this book, especially the beginning of it. Below are a couple of lines from it that resonated with me.

"Ask yourself if what you are doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow."

Dream for my child: to not always listen to me and make your own choices and mistakes.

I'll be honest, I'm not usually a big fan of parenting books - largely because they are generally full of formulas for evoking the desired behavior from your children, and they fail to account for the human variable.
This is different. While there is some examination of the kids, it's mostly a series of journaling exercises for delving into your own past and the way it affects your present - and your parenting. Her observations are thoughtful and the questions dig deep, allowing you to find what does (or doesn't) work best for your family, without insisting on a specific "right" answer.
I'd like to go back later - maybe in five years - and read it again, reevaluating my original answers and seeing how I've evolved as a person and how we've evolved as a family.

Bonnie Compton has written the definitive book on mothering. I love the lens she uses, that of courage. In fact, that's what drew me to the book. Reading her words made me feel stronger as a human being. A big thanks to the author!

This is a must read for all moms. The chapters have sections within them that are easy to read if you don't have a lot of time. The journal exercises can lead to very thoughtful discussions.
