Η επίπλαστη αίσθηση ηρεμίας θα διαταραχθεί εκ νέου, όταν ανακαλυφθούν τα οστά ενός μικρού παιδιού στο δάσος του ποταμού Χόου, κοντά στο σημείο όπου εκτυλίχθηκαν τα γεγονότα του περασμένου Δεκεμβρίου. Όταν τελικά αποκαλυφθεί πως τα οστά ανήκουν στον αδελφό του Κουίν, που είχε εξαφανιστεί πριν από πολλά χρόνια, ένας νέος κύκλος αίματος θα ανοίξει. Ο Κουίν προσφέρει αμοιβή για κάθε πληροφορία που θα οδηγήσει στους δράστες της απαγωγής και τότε ξεκινά μια σειρά άγριων δολοφονιών. Οι έρευνες της αστυνομίας οδηγούν στο συμπέρασμα πως ο τότε εγκέφαλος της απαγωγής πλήρωσε κάποιον για να βγάλει από τη μέση όσους εμπλέκονταν σε αυτήν, προκειμένου να μη μιλήσουν. Ποιο είναι όμως αυτό το τόσο σκοτεινό μυστικό, που πρέπει να διαφυλαχθεί με οποιοδήποτε κόστος; Και ποιος είναι τόσο δυνατός, που είναι σε θέση να κινεί τα νήματα ακόμα και τόσα χρόνια μετά;

“It is only through mystery and madness that the soul is revealed”

----Thomas Moore

V.M. Giambanco, an Italian-English author, has penned a thrilling crime fiction, The Dark which is the second book book in the Alison Madison series. Alison Madison is the detective in the Homicide department of Seattle PD, who is working on a twenty-five year old abduction of little boys case, but on her investigation, she is shadowed upon by a stalker who has other intentions to stop her from investigating to the core of the horrific crime, while her own demons from her dreams are threatening to take away her career from her.

Synopsis:

Seattle Homicide Detective Alice Madison is bound to jailed murderer John Cameron and attorney Nathan Quinn by a debt that cannot be repaid, by a nightmare that changed their lives forever.

When the remains of Quinn’s younger brother – murdered when he was a boy – are discovered in a shallow grave, Madison vows to follow the trail of brutal deaths that leads to the truth.

A sadistic killer stalks the investigation as Madison’s own demons threaten her future career with the police and darkness closes in. How far is she prepared to go to save a life?

The original Spanish title of the book is En lo profundo del bosque which has been translated into English as, The Dark. The first book in the series is called, 13 días in Spanish and The Gift of Darkness in English, the third book is in draft and is called, Blood and Bone and the whole series follows a same mystery revolving around the abduction of three young boys among whom the remains of only two boys surfaced and in this book we see that the remains of the third boy, named David Quinn, is found, followed by Alison's investigation that takes her back to-and-fro from the past to the present, connecting all the dots and the missing links left twenty five years ago to that of the present day, unfortunately her past is haunting her and a mad killer-cum-stalker is shadowing every move of Alison whereas the men behind the crime of killing those criminals who abducted the kids are also trying their best to stop Alison from following the respective protocols and the police procedures.

Well, one thing is very sure to understand the gravity of this crime as well as the characters, one have to read the first book in the series to comprehend the whole mystery more perfectly. And unfortunately, I've not read the first book, so it was bit difficult to see through the layers of the conversation or see through the flaws as well as goodness of a particular character. But judging by this book, I would say that there were lots of loose ends to the story that can be more tightly and skillfully portrayed to make the plot intriguing.

The writing is quite strong and the way the author have featured the whole police procedural with less actions but with lots of brain work and thoughts makes it pretty kick-ass, and if the detective is a female heroine, Alison Madison, who takes no shit before her job with a daring attitude, what more can you ask for.

The pace is really fast and the narration flows freely and the author have layered the plot with lots of brain-twisting clues and turns that keeps the readers hooked on to the story till the very last page. The mystery itself, present in the story, is compelling enough to keep the readers engaged and lost in the tangled web of the mystery. A twenty five years ago abduction case opens up in the present times and the Seattle PD is investigating hard to find the motive and what went wrong when the first boy died.

The characters are all okay, not that strongly sketched with lots of blank spaces, that is hard for the readers to understand the motive or the nature of these characters, although I pretty much liked the protagonist, Alison, with whom I could connect well and her solid determination and brave demeanor kept me rooting for till the very end.

Overall, the book is quite enthralling as well as riveting that will unravel the minds of the readers as Alison goes on a twenty-five year old mysterious journey to find the killer.

Verdict: This book will appeal to the crime lovers a lot and also if you want to read about an unusual heroine who apart from her dangerous job, also faces her own demons and fears and how hard she fights with it, then do grab a copy of the book.

Courtesy: Thanks to the author, V.M. Giambanco, for giving me an opportunity to read and review this book.

The Dark starts off just a month after the ending of The Gift of Darkness and continues the story of a cold case from 20 years ago, when three boys were abducted. When new evidence emerges and attorney Nathan Quinn, who is still recovering in hospital, makes a public appeal regarding the murder of his little brother, David, all those years ago, Seattle Homicide Detective Alice Madison is suddenly faced with a number of cases involving torture, murder, and arson. It appears that somebody is trying to tidy up to avoid further information coming to light.
I think it's possible to get into this even if you haven't read The Gift of Darkness first, but with all the information about Alice, Nathan, Cameron and the abduction case that's provided in the first book, you'll probably enjoy this more if read in order.
This one is nowhere near as slow moving as the previous book. While it is still a very detailed police procedural/thriller, the pacing is much better and I actually finished it within a couple of days although it's another 500-pages book. The storyline is really creative and I enjoyed getting the different perspectives. With Cameron sitting in prison awaiting trial in this one, another different layer was added. I have become quite attached to Alison, Nathan and Cameron. Their relationship dynamics are just fascinating without the author introducing the standard romance angle. But I'm seriously hoping that all three will still feature in the next book.
My one niggle, stick with one name for a character. Cameron, is it John or Jack?
This is turning into a very compelling crime series. I gave the first book 3.5 stars. This one is definitely a solid 4, maybe even 4.5. I'm looking forward to the third book, Blood and Bone.
I received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

An air of melancholia hangs over this intelligent and dark thriller located in Seattle. I have not read the first book in the series, which was a pity as this book is infused with the fallout from events which occurred there. We have Madison, a dedicated detective, inexorably tied to Nathan Quinn who is recovering from horrific injuries and John Cameron in prison awaiting charges. Both men helped Madison rescue a young child from the hands of a monstrous serial killer.

The remains of Quinn's younger brother, David, are recovered in a wood. In 1985, David along with other boys was abducted. Whilst the other boys came out alive, David was murdered. Quinn puts out an emotionally charged appeal offering a huge monetary reward for the capture of the kidnappers. This sets off a chain of events that include arson, murders, torture, and the discovery of a psychologically damaged Vincent in a mental institute since 1985 as the ghosts of yesteryear arise.

There are twists and turns aplenty, not to mention a host of dangers. There is a shocking reveal when we discover who had ordered the abductions and the murder of David Quinn. This is a painstakingly detailed thriller that dwells on PTSD, retribution, obsession, and bitterness. I thought the book was outstanding but felt my experience would have been enhanced if I read the first novel.

three and a half stars, but I had to give credit to the fact that it is by far better than the first book. The story is good, the motive for the crime is adequate, the ending is satisfying and it was a pleasant read.

Just finished this book and I can say it is an excellent police procedural as well as a crime story with psychological insights in the protagonists' thoughts and actions! The Alice Madison series has a quirk: the first book has as a prerequisite the story that is treated in the second book and that is very clever and quite a twist! The first book was disappointing, maybe due to the fact that the greek edition I read was not whole but certain passages were not included in the book (have no idea why!). The story though was so good that I wanted to know the adventures of Alice and the other heroes, Nathan Quinn and John Cameron so, I read the second book, literally in a row and was not disappointed! I recommend it wholeheartedly and readers whol live crime fiction will add Giambanco in the list of great writers!

Alice Madison karakterini sevdim.
Seveceksiniz 👍🏻

The author does a really good job with the plot and the characters in this series and I really like it.
The second story of the series starts a few months after the events of the first book.
Each of the characters struggles with the events that took place and is trying to adjust physically, mentally and emotionally.
A new case about a crime commited in the past is the one detective Alice Madison takes up to investigate and also new crimes are commited that are connected to the first crime.
Because of this new case once again her path crosses with attorney Nathan Quinn and criminal John Cameron and as the case developes so does the complex relationship she has with those two men.
Nothing in the author's story is easy and this relationship in particular because is formed through very strong emotional circumstances.
We also see Madison with a new partner at her side and how she is trying to handle it and the contrast between her interaction with this new partner and detective Kevin Brown who isn't currently available in the force but still a presence in her life.
Through many shifts and turns the story comes to an end and there is always something in Valentina Giambanco's stories you don't expect the characters end up in a completely different point from the one they started.
In this book we get to know Nathan Quinn a little better since the story is connected to him and something that happend in the past and I greatly enjoyed this because since the first book he became my favourite character even though he isn't one of the protagonist and I hope he will be present in the third book also.
It's a fast paced story with intriguing characters and interisting forming relationships and I totally recommend it to readers who want to read a crime novel with a good case and zero personal drama at least for now...

I would like to start by thanking V.M Giambanco, Quercus and Netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I read 'The Dark' straight after reading the first one in the series 'The Gift of Darkness'. I originally gave it four stars; because although I enjoyed it, I didn't feel it was exciting or fast paced enough for 5 stars. I then changed my mind and the reason being the characters. It has been a long time since I have felt so strongly about so many characters. I love them in this series and actually find myself really caring what happens to them. I find myself wanting to know more and actually worrying about the outcome of each chapter. This is a series I've grown to love and can't wait to read more about the lives of Alice, Quinn, Jack and Detective Brown.

'The Dark' follows on 'The Gift of Darkness' and I would recommend that they were read in order. Cases are closely linked and there is so much character progression. I will defiantly be reading the 3rd book and any others that follow.

While I liked the first book by V.M. Giambanco, I cannot say the same for this one. The writing style leaves a lot to be desired. One sentence you are reading about one thing and the next you are reading about another. There are multiple thoughts and mini storylines running throughout and it get very tedious trying to switch back and forth between them, especially when they have no contributing factor to the main story at all. I am not ready to totally give up on this author yet though.

I loved her first installment - this one I found a little slow...and the twist at the end, I already figured out who it was, just not the motive. I really like Alice's character and will read more for sure...but I hope we get new characters this time instead of bringing back the same main three. Yes, it was good to come back to the main the crime that brought them together in the first book and finally solve the case, but I just hope we can move on and leave Nathan and Jack behind now - cased closed.

A very, very long book with many, many characters......I liked the writing and the main character, Alice Madison. BUT....either I am getting too old for long stories or this baby needs some strong editing. Too much wandering around, dead end pursuits, slow revealing of clues....too slow!!
