Re-reading these old comics was maybe one of the better decisions I've made all year. Now, I realize this series won't be for everyone but this was the comic that made me fall in love with X-Force. Hard. Whether or not you'll enjoy this as much as I do is contingent on a few things. Ask yourself these questions:
Do I wanna see X-23 and Wolverine fuck up some bad guys?
Do I wanna see Warren turn into a metal Angel of Death?
Do I wanna see Domino do her badass Domino-y thing?
Do I wanna see Warpath and Ghost Rider take on a motherfucking Demon Bear?
If you answered yes any of these, then you need to get this book.
Domino, Elixer, and a very reluctant Vanisher round out the team this time, as the X-Force goes on the hunt for the Legacy Virus. Lots of Snikt! from Laura and Logan, Angel is hanging on to sanity by a thread, and Elixer is continually about to shit all his pants.
That whole storyline was a lot of fun, but the adding Vanisher into the mix really pushed it up a notch. At the same time, Proudstar is off learning the ways of the Force from Ghost Rider. But the demon bear has a secret of his own...
Ok. After everyone has been blown up one or twice, they meet up to compare notes. Turns out, Warpath now knows the identity of the mysterious Eli Bard. *wavy/blurry lines*
The book ends with a really good flashback scene that explains just where this dude came from, and possibly what he's trying to accomplish now.
Bastion has plans to turn the world against he remaining Mutants, and it's X-Force's job to get out there and stop his plans by any means necessary. The dark covert X-team continues to be impressive in the creative hands of Kyle & Yost. 8 out of 12, Four Star read. 2018 read
Not bad at all. I definitely preferred the artwork in this volume. There were a couple of story elements that made no sense, though, so I can't quite bring myself to give it four stars.
So this one starts off more exciting than the last for me. Basically The X-Force are sent on a mission to retrieve a virus. While warpath faces off against a...bear? Yeah like a gigantic spirit bear. Listen, this is the X-men universe, get with it. With the X-Force team all working together and a new member, Domino, joining them, will they be able to successfully get the virus back or will it be too late?
Good: I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters. They're all starting to come together. I especially thought Wolverine was funny in this one. The fights are also a lot easier to follow so more exciting here. Also how badass was that X-23 moment? Yeah you know that moment.
Bad: Uh...Warpath...what the fuck was that? Everything with him, the past, all that was just...can I say dull? it was very very dull. It took a little too much time in this book.
With a upgrade in art, the fights being better, and the team coming together i'm starting to dig this a little more. A 3.5 out of 5.
Two volumes in, I'm really enjoying this series. I like the idea of a covert branch of the X-Men that does what needs to be done, however morally gray it might be. It's something that wouldn't have been done under Xavier. But he's gone now, and mutants are more on the defensive than ever. Obviously, the basic idea works really well for me. And the plot specifics in this volume are working, too. There's a lot of characters on the edge here, without being unlikeable. And I'm liking how each volume so far has had one complete story, with threads enough left over to keep me eagerly reading.
This book had a few threads going. One, Angel is in an internal war with himself trying to control his Archangel persona. Two, the mysterious Eli in the last volume brought back several mutant villains and now has reinstated them back to the positions in the government, military etc etc. Then we have a sample of the legacy virus stolen and X-force goes on the hunt to secure it. Mike Choi takes the baton form Clayton for the art duties and is not too shabby. At the end of the book we get the back story of this Eli character. Interesting tale. This Looks to be setting up the X Necrosha arc. Looking forward to it.
X-Men'i çok seven biri olarak seriyi beğendim.
Archangel and Wolfsbane are having issues with each other. Domino and Vanisher join the group, who are after the Legacy Virus. The team takes on Marauder clones. The origin of Eli Bard (which includes Selene). Ghost Rider helps out Warpath on a side story, and I think thats a great reason to guest star, just to have Choi draw him. The art all around doesn't get better then this.
"Old Ghosts" is representative of the dark and intense tone of this run of X-Force. I really like this series. I think the art and narrative mesh seamlessly to create an impressive end product. X-Force is about putting everything to the test and committing your very all to the cause. Someone is going to die if you do nothing, so do something and let it be the bad guys who die. While X-Men won't stoop to this level, there needs to be a mutant group who will do the dirty work, and that's where the X-Force comes in. And with enemies like theirs, I don't have a lot of moral misgivings about that. I love this team, and I was jazzed to see Domino show up. She fits right in with these guys. She's actually surprised at how lethal the X-Force has become, but she soon realizes exactly what they are up against.
The action is incredible, and while this book is very violent and bloody, it feels appropriate to the storyline.
I am getting over being kind of burned out on the X-Men, and reading this run of X-Force is helping me tremendously with that. At this point, I am definitely a big fan of the X-Force.
The first Volume was pretty action packed, so one has to accept I guess, that this book felt more like an intermittent set-up book. Like it is setting us up for Volume 3, still though, this was fun.
This is the better incarnation of X-force but this volume seemed way to fast paced. I didn't like how they flashed back and forth between one story and the start of Necrosia storyline.
Okay whew, this one was a wild ride from start to finish! There are so many different story arcs happening at the same time that it got kinda confusing and I had to re-read some parts. Angel and Rahne go through some things here, with the former transforming into Archangel upon seeing Rahne transform into werewolf form, and the latter violently going after Angel’s wings. It’s a troubling situation because neither of them can control their transformation. Warpath, having killed so many Purifiers, is unable to deal with the fact that he committed the act. So he kinda goes on a journey to meet with his brother and rediscover who he truly is. On the way there, he comes face to face with the Demon Bear and cannot physically harm it. Through a very wild encounter, Ghost Rider comes along and helps Warpath defeat the demonic creature! Really epic crossover! Meanwhile, Wolverine, X-23, and Archangel go looking for the Vanisher, a teleporting mutant that has stolen samples of the Legacy Virus! Through all this, there are hate groups that also want the virus, namely the Army of the Right and Bastion who intend to give it to the Leper Queen. Finally, Warpath reveals the identity of “Eli Bard” and who he actually serves. Also, Domino and Selene made an appearance in this volume which was really cool!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Following the events of the previous volume the X-Force team attempts to deal with Angel losing his mind, Elixir becoming aware of the team and Rahne's PTSD from eating her father.
This book actually started quite strong, with some good humour and interesting plot. The Legacy Virus is stolen from a lab and X-Force is tasked to hunt them down, eventually meeting up with and adding Domino to the team.
However, soon after this the main story is shoved aside in favour of the absolutely horrendous Warpath subplot, where he drives down to New Mexico and ends up fighting a giant demon bear, with the help of Ghost Rider, obviously.
After that they abruptly shove a brand new villains backstory straight down our throats. Even the X-Force characters complained during that issue about how boring the story was. Overall, everything was very rushed and glossed over, except of course for the excruciatingly long backstory I mentioned earlier.
Still got a lot of edge though. So if you enjoy that, maybe you'll like this laughable attempt at telling the "mature" side of X-Stories.
This X-Force series may be my favorite X Universe series since the Claremont/Byrne run of Uncanny X-Men.
In this volume we have clones of the Marauders, the Legacy Virus makes a return, and we see the origin of an interesting new villain. But the coolest part was Ghost Rider and Warpath teaming up to fight a demon bear! The Clayton Crain artwork fits this book perfectly.
A couple years ago when I read the first X-Force in this run I did like a live-blog style review. I’m gonna give that another go now with the second. So once again, spoilers and swearing.
X: I must warn you… I am highly proficient in racquetball. Wolverine: good for you.
Oh man, this is a terrible idea. Scott, this was your idea, wasn’t it? This has “Scott’s idea” written all over it. Oh BB Rahne. Oh BB Angel. I’m like 4 pages in and everything is terrible. I love Elixer so much, and I’m pretty sure they really casually killed him in Wolverines and it pisses me off to no end. Oh good, Scott, that’s helping. Really.
REALLY SCOTT?? Get your head out of your ass and call Emma. When even LOGAN says it’s time to call Emma, it’s DEFINITELY time to call Emma. Don’t say things like “he’ll have to be dealt with” in front of Laura, she will take that literally. Oh yeah, SHIELD is in this plot, I keep forgetting that because they are USELESS. OH GOOD they have a file with Laura’s name on it. Perfect. The art in here is actually really beautiful. OMG SCOTT! YOU CALLED THE CUCKOOS IN AND NOT EMMA?! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?! WHO BROUGHT YOU?! I know I’m yelling at Scott a lot, but really, this is actually pretty in character for him. He gets in over his head a lot. Great tactician, this kid, good with people, but not awesome with the long-term leadership stuff. OH I didn’t see that coming. But I did say she’d take that literally. [kinda feel like I owe Scott an apology, but he's not going to get it.] Oh fuck.
OH LOOK Laura was right. Shocking. HA It’s Domino! Oh man. This is gonna be awesome. Guys, why is Rahne so alone? Ugh bb.
Wolverine: One more time, Domino. WHY did you shoot me in the head? Domino: You put your head between me and my porter. Not my fault. X: You are both breaking radio silence.
Okay, I know Archangel is no joke and I shouldn’t laugh, but every time someone says “Worthington?” and he goes, “NO! I AM DEATH!” I just… really?! Domino’s over here just like… *stretch* Oh look, Laura and Domino don’t get along. That surprises me all to pieces.
Logan: Looks like a tumor. Nasty one, too. Nice job working in the team logo. REALLY GUYS?! ARE YOU TWO LIKE... EIGHT?!
I’m really sorry, but I just have no interest in the Warpath subplot happening here. Oh man! Domino as narrator! Excellent. Yes dear, I think when Logan referred to “Crybaby here” he was talking about you.
And in case I wasn’t uninterested enough in Warpath’s subplot, let’s throw Ghost Rider into it! *Yawn* *Flip* Oooo Rahne!
Man, talk about a subplot with a slow burn… Logan, now you’re just being unkind.
Vanisher: I don’t think Professor Xavier would approve of this! Logan: Tell me about it.
Domino: [about X-Force] Even CABLE smiled more than these guys.
*Huge explosion* *Domino grinning* Domino: Any inspirational words? Logan: Sure. If you die, take one of them with you.
Domino: [about Laura] …she’s like a machine… she’s so small… there are moments when I look at her, I just wanted to laugh. But I’m not laughing now.
This book is full of Laura pointing out she was right and Logan irately telling her to shut up. It’s amazing. HOLY FUCK! NOOOOOOOOO In Logan’s words: SOMEBODY @#$%ING GET TO LAURA!! OMG ELIXER! MY HEART! MY BBs!!! AAAAAARG all I can think about right now is how Wolverines THREW HIM AWAY LIKE HE WAS NOTHING AND I AM SO ANGRY
Laura: Elixir dropped me. I caught fire when I hit the edge of the tank. Josh: I said I was sorry! OMG ALL MY FEEEEEEEEEEELS
Logan is 10,000% done. Again, in Logan’s words: For the love of God, Proudstar, please tell me this is going somewhere.
Vanisher: You know what? Screw you guys. I’ll take my chances with the tumor.
This was significantly less bloody than the last one. Also, not gonna lie, I stopped reading the Warpath stuff. I skimmed through the big long explanation at the end, I got the gist of it. I need the third now, I need to know what happens to Rahne!
Also, and I know I harp on this all the time, but LAURA! THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE LAURA! I love her SO FUCKING MUCHWHYISEVERYTHINGAWFULNOW?! I'm just so displeased with the way the X-Men are going atm. They haven't been worth reading in YEARS.
I sat down and read this one pretty much all in one sitting. I really love the artwork, it's very modern, and very dark which suits the tone of a dark and more dangerous covert team of X-Men, who are pretty much there to do the dirty work the more public X-Men team (led by Xavier) can't be seen to do.
I liked the story and I really like X-23 and Wolfsbane. I really want to learn more about these characters, and I love the new look to Angel, and how he's now struggling with something (don't want to give the plot away). Definitely an enjoyable read, and a must for X-Men fans.
This series is too good. High octane, multiple storylines interwoven and well executed. The art is consistently good too. I have to say, I think I prefer Mike Choi’s art on the book, he did a great job. X-23 keeps on showing me why she’s a favorite of mine and Josh Foley, or “Elixir”, proves to be underrated and gets shine here. Warpath gets a divergent story also. If you like the X-Men, or any of the characters included, or gritty action with weight, pick this up. I also would suggest the New X-Men run by Kyle/Yost before this as well as it is also great and adds to the enjoyment.
First off, I did not put this down until I had finished it.
I feel like this one is a little less bloody, a little less dark, and definitely tempered with more of the humor that I personally love.
The illustrations were clear and the dialogue was much easier to follow in this one than in the first volume. It also really feels like the story is moving more naturally.
Maybe not as immediately compelling as the previous volume, and wither perhaps some missteps (the Warpath plotline is meh, and what's up with Wolfsbane?), still a solid volume. Dark and brooding, but in a good way.
I thought a lot was accomplished in this, and it was just overall a good story. I really like Domino though so it was nice to have her in the story and also get some of her perspective.
So the last volume had to setup the team - you know, who everyone was and why they were there. But this one hits the ground running as we already established that in volume 1. We have two new members - Domino, who is there willingly, and vanisher, who is kind of forced into the team. They have to go after a sample of the legacy virus that someone stole in order to make sure that nightmare doesn't start up all over again.
This series is really fun (in a ultraviolent kind of way) and the chemistry between the team members really makes this book click. I think having Wolverine as the leader is an interesting bit of storytelling by Christopher Yost, as you can tell he kind of doesn't really want to lead. He just wants to get the mission done. And X23 not listening too much kind of undercuts his leadership anyways. That kind of interpersonal interactions between the team keep the book lively even when the action slows down for the plot to build.
The art is split between Craig Kyle and Michael Choi, and the book looks great. Their styles are different but they have a similar vibe, so the book doesn't lose any intensity when the art switches. I was dreading the switch as sometimes book will do that and lose the momentum, glad to see that wasn't the case here.
I know the next X Force run that Remender does is the one that gets the most attention (rightly so), but this run is pretty damn good. If you're into the more black ops aspect of the X Men, you got to check this out.
This continues to be quite a good series though it has its issues.
The art is great. Plot moves along at a good clip. Not sure why Ghost Rider had to show up (but I'm a mutant purist in my mutie books - leave the rest of the Marvel Universe out of it...) and that really breaks up the plot. I sort of feel like the Warpath/GR part should have been its own standalone, though I like the character building for Warpath.
Warren and Rahne are both embroiled in just a bit too much melodrama for my taste.
Nice seeing so many characters from New X-Men showing up in this volume (and volume 3).
So far, I'm not exactly sure why Cyke feels the need to keep the team a secret - especially from Emma as she would probably agree with his methods. It seems like a bit of a stretch and it is a major plot thread...
The meat of the book was pretty good. The stars, in my opinion, were X-23 and Elixir. I loved their chemistry. The whole “get the legacy virus” thing was whatever, and seeing the marauders again was also very whatever, but the character aspect more than made up for it. We were also treated to a very unexpected and awesome cameo from the spirit of vengeance.
My favorite part of this collection was the last issue. Selene is so awesome. She’s, in many ways, a much cooler version of Apocalypse. I can’t wait to see Kyle/Yost write more of her.
All in all, this story is a pretty goddam great way to spend am afternoon.
Mike Choi, Alina Urusov and Clayton Crain make an exceptional art team. The visuals were gorgeous. Definitely some eye candy.
This is grade a shit. I definitely can’t recommend this series enough.
A vast improvement over the previous volume of X-Force, this is still a flat book. There are some cool character beats, mostly involving Elixir, but this is the X-treeeeeeeeeeeeeme klllingly violent group of violent killers X-Men spin-off, and it's...it's just your average X-book with returning character reveals, familiar villain twists, and no actual long-term consequences. Sure, Archangel is back, and for one issue he is out of control! (like he was in the early X-Factor days), but then he's right back to being In Control Archangel. It's disappointing.
If you loved X-Force: ANgels & Demons, you might continue to like this.
So from the start we need to talk about the shift in the art style. Personally I think its a bit cartoonish for me. I liked the first volumes art style its much darker and artistic. They do change it back towards the end of this volume and like I said personally I think it looks much better. The story is not as hack and slash and gorey as it was in the first volume but it is setting up for the next volume for sure. There was a lot more backstory and detailed lore then the first volume setting up the next volume to either expand on or deliver what this volume was holding back.
Story ramps up here, and if anything, the art (which changes here) changes for the better. Again with the history of the various teams and the mythologies of their villains coming into play, the body count grows ever higher along with the stakes of the burgeoning epic conflict. Still very action-oriented, but with character moments that matter more and more. The stuff with Elixir and the Vanisher are perhaps the standout moments, but there's some good evil and internal conflict in this, too.
I like this a little more than the previous volume.
The story is easier to follow. In addition, Old Ghosts introduces Selene and her connection with Eli Bard (Eliphas). So it will be interesting to see where that goes.
Again, the art is fantastic. Especially the scenes involving Ghost Rider and Warpath. YES, Ghost Rider actually makes an appearance. He's very well in tune with things involving demons, and that's beneficial to Warpath.
