Las Palmas Fencing Club #1

The Master Will Appear

Rate this book
Dr. Mikhail "Misha" Budnikov takes one look at fellow fencer Ryan O'Connor and instantly knows his type. The undisciplined hothead is all ego with no finesse and even less control. In short, Misha's pet peeves personified. To put the arrogant kid in check, Misha challenges him to a sparring match, which he predictably wins. Not so predictably, Ryan asks him to be a mentor and show him how to fence. Startled by the moment of humility, Misha agrees. What begins as fencing lessons becomes something much hotter, and before they know it, Misha is giving Ryan an entirely different kind of education. Dominance, submission, pain, pleasure-at the hands of an older, experienced man, a whole new world is opening up for Ryan. As the trust deepens and their bond strengthens, though, Ryan retreats because that sham called love left him jaded long ago. Cynical beyond his years, he's not letting his guard down, least of all for a thrice-divorced man twice his age. Now Misha has to find a way to crack through those defenses...or accept defeat and walk away from the submissive who might just be the love of his life.

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

3.5 Hearts

Confession. I did something with this review that I've never done since I began reviewing. I sat on it. I sat on it for SIX DAYS. Yeah, I'm not a procrastinator when it comes to reviewing. Everything else is fair game. My rationale was I wanted to see what I remembered, see if my feels changed at all with time. They didn't. I'm still circling between 3-3.5 Hearts.

I liked this book. I didn't love this book mostly because it felt like a draft. Maybe not a first draft, maybe a second or third, but a draft nonetheless. Witt's editor did her a disservice by not acting like my college philosophy prof, in my opinion. That mofo returned papers to me that looked like his pen Hulked out all over my writes. It was like something died on that paper. Fuck, I hated that class. Anywhat. I'm digressing.

Up and down. Up and down. That's precisely how this read went for me. Moments of brilliance like the phone call scene when I simultaneously respected the hell out of Misha while feeling their connection paired with redundancy and repetition like the lotion and water. Times when I felt I was being told rather than shown and vice versa. I also feel like this was two books. The first half was sex heavy. Every time I turned around they were gearing up again like they were freebasing Viagra. I was looking for some relationship development but all I got was sexual chemistry. Then the second half was like the flip side of the coin. It focused more on them as a couple and growing closer. I would've liked a better overall balance.

Ryan's characterization was heavy on the angst and pain having much to do with his dysfunctional family and the toll that's taken on him. Sometimes I felt like the angst and pain was relevant and other times gratuitous. Misha's characterization was simpler, as it should be with all Ryan had going on, so I did appreciate the lack of drama on his end and the fact that we were shown how he's retained his sense of optimism and romanticism through numerous failed marriages and relationships. I think their difference in age (19 yrs) was handled well and shouldn't squick anyone out.

This is Witt so the sex was hot as was the kink. I do like pain, though, so if that's not in your comfort zone you may want to exercise caution. I didn't think it was overly explicit but it's been established I'm not the best barometer for these things so... Ryan also has a bit of an exhibitionist streak and wants to be the star in a gang bang, which Misha arranges and IT WAS HOOOOTTTT!!!!!!! Scorching hot. My favorite part was how Ryan kept looking for Misha though like he was his protector and touchstone. That was a thoughtful touch.

I've been watching a lot of Iron Chef lately, because THE GAUNTLET (((***echoes***))) so I'm about to Alton Brown this review.

We have two primo ingredients here-age difference and kink, which I'll liken to steak and lobster. Both are capable of carrying the show even if you do little with them they're still stellar ingredients and that's what Witt did. Both are prepared well but not transformed in any way. Steak and lobster are a good dish that anyone would pay good money for in any restaurant around the world, but it's not a composed dish and thus, not Iron Chef worthy.

Still worth a read if you like steak or lobster, though.

First I’d like to begin by saying there hasn’t been a L.A Witt book that I’ve really liked. Yes, I’ve enjoyed a few and there’s been a few others that have brought out my rage, but with this story I’m in love with almost everything.

The Story: 4.5 Pants Off

When Mikhail “Misha” Budnikov sets his eyes on a young fencer he can already see his arrogance, and he would take great pleasure in downing his ego. Mikhail doesn’t take students on but when Mr arrogance asks to be trained, Mikhail already has enough attraction to know he can’t the deny boy anything. No one is more surprised than he is, but when it comes to Ryan he can see something deep inside of the boy, not including that Ryan is sexy as hell.

When Ryan turns out to be an apt pupil Mikhail feels accomplished because he hasn’t let his attraction get in the way of their practices until Ryan drops a bomb. Yeh, sure he’s his fencing instructor and there’s a rule that you don’t shit where you eat, but Ryan wants him and now Mikhail gets to teach him how to fuck. Fencing and Fucking, the greater things in life.

Misha and Ryan begin a sensual push and pull of epic proportions where Misha introduces Ryan to his submissive side and two come together like fish to water. You see their romance blossom and it becomes clear they are perfect together, but Ryan has lived such a life without love and care and Misha offers him that without judgement and so it creates conflict because for him no one gives unconditionally without wanting something in return.

And with two men on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to love, of course one falls so deeply in love and the other doesn’t even recognize it.

Things I liked: I love Misha, he’s all sexy, Russian, and a Dom 😈 and I really enjoyed him.

-The men get down to some dirty dirty love and every time it was just so sexy and entertaining. Loved it!!

-I just find the overall story very good. The older man/younger guy trope never gets old and this was just an adorable.

Things I didn’t like: Ryan’s family. I am so over them, I wish they would have gotten the cuss out so bad but Ms Witt didn’t quite give me that gratification.

-That moment where Ryan was a complete asshole and the way Misha just forgives him. How you gon get mad at a person for giving you what you asked for and then use it against him?? I shouldn’t have been surprised, something in a L.A Witt book always pisses me off beyond compare, and how they always just forgive easily. In a perfect world forgiveness would come easily but when you say horrible things, its really hard to move on from that, so hey “fuck you Ryan”.

Overall, this might be my first L.A Witt story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The good far outweighs the bad and because it was on audio that might have helped it along.

The Narration: 5 Pants Off

Michael Ferraiuolo is just amazing. He brought the characters to life, and his accent for Misha was just top notch. I have nothing bad to say about his work. He made a story that is goodish (and I say that based on my experience with L.A’s books) freaking exceptional.

An amazing talent and everyone should have a listen. Michael Ferraiuolo the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time).

Best BDSM MM story I've read so far! AGE GAP - Yumm!

This is my first book by L.A. Witt and what a discovery it was!

Mikhail Budnikov - Misha - is unexpectedly attracted to a young fencer, Ryan, who tries to win a sparring match with arrogance and force.
Misha wants to give him a lesson, and after winning without much effort, he's surprised and intrigued by Ryan's shyness while asking him to train him and show him how to fence correctly.
I was afraid we'll get too many technical descriptions, but it was not the case. The beginning is just a little slow paced, but it still kept me turning the pages pretty fast. Couldn't wait to see them give into temptation.

And when this story gets hot, it gets extremely HOT!

I adored Ryan and Misha together. I loved Misha's strength and patience. He was so confident and kind. Even if life was not easy on him, he was such a good man and a romantic by heart.
Ryan was kind of sweet, even if he was too cynical for his young age.
It surprised me how much Misha helped Ryan discover what he really wanted and gave him exactly that. Did I mention they were really hot together? *sigh*
I will sincerely admit I couldn't put it down.

The angst is bearable and the development of their relationship is well written.

I loved the writing! This story was amazing and I can't wait to read more from this author!

This went off to a flying start. I loved the scenario and the bristling ‘animosity’ between Ryan and Misha in the first third of the book.

I was quite excited to see how Misha’s BDSM lessons with Ryan would develop. And it was absolutely great to start with - Ryan’s introduction to submissive behaviour in the bedroom and the way he reacts to what Misha does – was a very enticing read.

But then, the same things happens again and again. As for the BDSM - it never goes past spanking and flogging which in essence is fine if this is what a couple decide to do, but we were somehow given the impression that Misha (or should I say Mikhail) is a master of the trade, and the plentiful toys in his closet suggested he is very well versed in using them. If he is, we didn't get to see that.

Every scene between them felt like a copy of the previous one, more or less. Misha is happy enough with flogging and Ryan has a talent to sink into subspace at the drop of a hat. There is a passing mention of a cock-cage, but that about covers it.
Don't get me wrong - the scenes between the two men are hot, I just had expectations of a bigger variety and a development in what they do together (and yes, ok, Misha does use different floggers).

I hate to say it, but after the fabulous start I felt disappointed. The dynamics in this D/s relationship feel slightly wrong. I think it simply doesn't feel genuine enough, maybe? It's always Misha supporting Ryan, helping him, making him feel better. I actually have to agree with Ryan that their relationship comes across as one-sided.
I would have loved to see Ryan in at least one situation in which he takes care of Misha (and I mean emotionally and not sexually).

I did enjoy the book as a whole, but feel that not enough was made of the BDSM and the problems caused by Ryan’s horrendous family.

This delicious May/September, hate-to-love story has all the good stuff. Well-crafted, flawed-but-loveable characters who spark with each other right from the start. The sexual tension that finally explodes into some of the hottest sex scenes I've read in quite some time is fantastic, and even once the sexual tension is resolved, the scenes stay hot and get hotter. The fencing master becomes the BDSM master and whew. Basically, you want this book if you can handle age gap and BDSM stories. So incredibly wonderful and sexy and hot. I know I've gone on about the sex scenes, because damn, but the actual plot and character development is incredibly strong and moving. The crisis, when it comes, is understandable from both points of view and will make your heart ache. But that makes the resolution and Happy Ending SO GOOD. All right, hop off and buy this one! It's available for pre-order and will come out May 16!

Disclaimer: I did developmental and content edits on this book, but I honestly don't think that's made me biased at all. :D It's just that good! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XSQCTS1/

I am not a big BDSM reader and I don't know anything about fencing, not did I care much for it, so this book was a big gamble on my part. Good thing I like to gamble ;)

simpson-giphy2.gif (480×366)

Ryan (26) and Misha (45) are both fencers, and they meet at  a fence-club. Ryan has been fencing for about 5 years and he is not being a very good sportsman. Misha, who is a master fencer with lot's of experience, decides to challenge the younger man and put him in his place..... Which is exactly what he does.

tumblr_n4pd3sXjwk1s24qdco1_500.gif (500×255)

What he didn't expect however, was that after being defeated, Ryan would ask him to teach him how to fence properly. How can he say no to such eagerness.

Misha isn't just a great fencer though. He is also a college professor and Dom and a romantic, even after 3 divorces (two with women and one with a man).

Move+On+Quotes+(Inspirational+Quotes)+0001-0003+(7).jpg (550×700):

Ryan is a college student and an artist..... no he is not Misha's student. He comes from a horrible family and he is much more jaded. My heart broke for Ryan more than once...

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor my heart hurts + gif

Slowly Misha teaches Ryan everything he knows about fencing. But the lessons don't end there though.... Misha also introduces him to the world of BDSM.  The chemistry between these two is off the charts. It was a nice slow burn though not too slow, with plenty of sexual tension and extremely HOT sexscenes.

“You’re a submissive waiting to happen, aren’t you?”

I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop from just being sexual...to much more. I loved how Misha saw Ryan's need to submit. BDSM isn't really my thing, but this story was  very nicely done. I think part of my enjoyment has to do with the fact, that they really talk things through. Which is why the conflict near the end was a bit surprising to me. No worries though....all ends well.

This book does have a (sex)scene with multiple partners...for those who would like to know this, before going in.

Did not want this to end! I'm in book hangover territory y'all! It's so many things I love in a story; alternating POV, age gap, hurt/comfort and BDSM done right! Mikhail, 45, is the kind of Dom I enjoy reading. There's no trendy club, no sir, master, boy or pet names. The only distinction is being Mikhail on the piste (term for the fencing floor) and in Dom mode, and Mischa as friend and lover. It also stays in the bedroom, except for a few specific moments when Mikhail employs only his voice and attitude, when Ryan is in need of it. The relationship isn't rushed either, as weeks go by before they both succumb to attraction and Ryan discovers that submission is what he never knew he needed. His trust and confidence in Mikhail/Mischa extends from the coaching into the bedroom. Right up until it doesn't.

The BDSM is never a substitute for therapy, even though Ryan has his problems. Mikhail's maturity and patience is what Ryan responds to but it's not a Daddy kink, either. Some may object to the one scene with multiple partners but I understood the fantasy dynamic and the use as a plot device. I also learned a whole new sexual term! It's moderate BDSM, almost all impact play and there are several scenes but balanced with "vanilla". Not all scenes are detailed, although Ryan learns he's sometimes a pain slut! There's plentiful sex but L.A. is quite deft in writing scenes that don't overwhelm the story itself.

This went right to my endless rereads list. Although Ryan was only 26, he's mature enough to step back and think things through, eventually. None of the irritating communications tropes here! Highly recommended to BDSM fans and hurt/comfort fans. L.A. Witt at her finest!

I give it two stars because I really like this author and because I quite enjoyed the background story about a young man trying to figure out his future and needing to stand up against his family and his fencing coach, twenty years older than him.
But I struggled a lot to finish this book as it’s too focused on the Dom/Sub relationship for me .
My bad : I know that this is not my trope !

I thought I was past anymore 'book firsts' but it appears I was wrong. This was my first 'gangbang' and I can confidently tell you it's not something I would have actively sought out, not really my cuppa to be honest, but I'm so glad that my first time was with L.A. She has a unique and skillful touch...and delicately handles things while simultaneously easing any concerns until I'm comfortable pushing previous limits. I can't think of many authors that grant me such a level of trustworthiness and I'm always grateful when my confidence in her pays off. I'll jump back here in a moment but for now, let me rewind back to the beginning.

Misha witnesses a young cocky fencer put a beat down on another player and decides someone needs to put him in his place. He has seen his 'type' before and can't refuse an opportunity to demonstrate how a truly skilled player fights. He spars with him and quickly knocks the smirk from his handsome face. Though the young man, Ryan, suffers a few bruises, the biggest by far is to his ego. The greatest surprise of all is when Ryan nearly begs Misha to train him after the humiliating 'lesson'. Misha never expected that. As it turns out, Ryan is full of unexpected curveballs.

What's to like: This story felt like it had every trope including the kitchen sink thrown in, and yet somehow it all worked together brilliantly. First, we have the May-December trope. Misha is almost twice Ryan's age. Let me tell you, it was HOT. Next, we have the teacher-student trope. I was thankful that Misha was not Ryan's professor. Misha IS a professor but he doesn't teach Ryan. Clarification. Misha DOES teach Ryan many things, but not his college classes. Then we have the filthy rotten rich versus the average middle-class man's bank account. You might think it's the older professor but the mega bucks are attached to the young student. And I loved how Witt demonstrated that the best things in life cannot be bought. And finally, we have the seasoned dom and the novice sub. How can they be so different and yet fit together so well? That's only a feat L.A. can master.

What's to love: To unite two completely different men, significant emotional ties must bind them together. I won't share Ryan's history because I think you should see it for yourself, but I can guarantee it will tug on your heart and give you insight into "Ryan the man". In addition, it lays solid groundwork for the foundation of their bond. You see, Ryan has never had to want for anything because he can have whatever he wants. Except for unconditional love. He's coveted love for so long and been denied every time, that he's given up. He's lost hope that anyone will ever love him...without strings attached. How can it be unconditional if it comes with exclusions and limitations? It can't. So he's concluded he doesn't want it anymore. But when Ryan is with Misha, he melts and releases all the expectations bestowed on him. He discovers a safe haven on his knees at the mercy of his Dom and wants nothing else. It was supposed to be just sex and yet it's unlike anything he's ever known. Then Misha offers him the one thing he thought he could never have. But...but...it can't be real. Can it?

Beware of: Age gap, BDSM, an ultimate fantasy of a gangbang come true (I've changed my mind and decided it's best without knowing too many details here...sorry, #notsorry) and a near crash and burn ending.

This book is for: If you're a Witt groupie like I am, this is one from her bookshelf that should NOT be missed. It's raw, it's sexy, and stormy swordplay that will leave you breathless.

LA Witt has never been the author for me, so believe me when I say I am more shocked than anyone by how much I loved this book! 😍 Having been burned several times before, I wasn't sure I was up for disappointment again, but alas, having Michael Ferraiuolo as the narrator called to me like a warm, inviting light. Every time I scrolled past the title on Hoopla and saw his name attached, I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame until I couldn't resist any longer. Thankfully, there wasn't an actual bug zapper or anything involved because I would be dead if so 🪦 I'm so weak for his narration 🤣

Beyond the wonderful as always performance by Michael Ferraiuolo lies a lovely age-gap romance (20 years) that I can't recommend enough, assuming you are into that and don't mind some BDSM 😆 I never search out BDSM because it's not really my thing, but I don't mind it too much if it's done well like it is here.

The progression from Ryan becoming Misha's fencing student to his submissive and beyond was beautiful start to finish. The constant care that Misha took with Ryan was heartwarming 🥹 Misha quickly discovered Ryan's needs and adapted perfectly, always taking great care in dealing with him both in and out of the bedroom. Misha provided a soft place for Ryan to fall exactly when he needed it most, picking up on Ryan's challenging family life and helping him navigate a healthier way of dealing with his family while being respectful and supportive. If you've read this, you know Ryan's family is a hot pile of garbage. They are the worst part about this book, but I understand it was necessary for Ryan's story arc.

In the end, I have very few qualms about the story and will definitely listen again the future. I wish we had gotten to spend more time with Ryan and Misha as an official couple, but that's that way these things go sometimes 🤷🏼‍♀️ At least the epilogue was pretty satisfying, so I can't be too mad about it.

Romantic and passionate and wonderfully erotic, L.A. Witt’s The Master Will Appear has claimed the top spot on my all time favorites list. This story has everything I love: smoking hot BDSM scenes, a bit of angsty drama, and a steamy romance... Oh, and that age gap? Yes please! This book is perfect.

Even if you’ve read this one before, you’ve got to experience the audio edition of The Master Will Appear. Michael Ferraiuolo’s Russian accent is absolutely the sexiest thing I have ever heard. Sensual, seductive, *shivers*, I just can’t get it out of my mind (and believe me, I’m not complaining). His performance adds so much to this intimate and emotional story.

What I enjoy most about Michael Ferraiuolo’s narration is the way he brings the characters to life. He uncovers aspects of their personality, facets I didn’t see, which enhances the whole experience for me. Hearing the way the characters change and grow over the course of the story is amazing. When it’s done as beautifully as this it’s so much better than reading alone.

So, have I tempted you with promises of a sexy Russian accent? There’s a scene at the beginning of the story where Misha is coaxing Ryan to give BDSM a try. He explains what makes a power exchange so erotic for both parties, how it feels to dominate someone, and what it gives him personally. His voice is so soothing, completely seductive and alluring… and when he murmurs, “‘When I’m your coach or your Dom, you’ll still call me Mikhail… but like this, call me Misha.’” (oh damn, that’s hot).

The part of Misha’s story that really resonates with me is the depth of his appreciation of Ryan’s submission. Prior to Ryan his relationships with submissives were all about the challenge, bratty subs testing limits. Misha finds complete fulfillment in giving Ryan what he needs, and the way he describes Ryan’s responses are simply breathtaking.

The alternating points of view work so well in The Master Will Appear and hearing Ryan’s intimate thoughts as he experiences everything as it happens to him is intense. As he grows to understand what submission does for him, how it makes him feel to please Misha; watching him find his center and get some peace in his life. When he calls it “‘cathartic’”, that’s exactly what it is.

Ryan has his share of deliciously erotic narration, and his descriptions of the S&M scenes are incredible. The running commentary when he’s taking the single-tail for the first time are vivid and intense. Not to mention his emotions as he embraces each sensation and seeks to understand what it does for him. I don’t know what was more erotic, Ryan’s account of his fantasy as it’s happening to him, or Michael Ferraiuolo’s sensual voice as he narrates it. All of it is amazing!

The dynamic between these two men is intense and comes across so well in the audiobook. I could feel their connection changing as the story progresses, in both their D/s relationship, and simply as two men who are falling in love. If you’re in the mood for a steamy, toe-curling BDSM romance, listening to The Master Will Appear narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo is the book for you.

While I enjoyed most of this, I also had a few issues with it.

Misha is a 45 year old professor and fencer. He challenges cocky 26 year old Ryan, when Misha sees Ryan needs to be brought down a peg or two.

Of course Misha beats Ryan spectacularly, but what he doesn’t expect is for Ryan to accept his defeat and ask for fencing lessons.

And so they meet every week, to fence. Ryan isn’t sure Misha is gay, but he can’t help but drool over the older man.

But Ryan is no meek student, and when he pushes Misha one time too often, Misha tells Ryan to get on his knees, right there in the locker room. And Ryan doesn’t hesitate to do as he asks…

I loved the BDSM aspect of this. I really like my BDSM books like this. Where there is open communication and the Dom is sweet and fair, yet dominant. And where these guys are both equal in the relationship. There is a power play in the bedroom, but not in their everyday lives.

I loved both Ryan and Misha. They were incredibly likable and I was seriously rooting for them the entire time.

What I liked less was that there was too much sex in this. It got a bit boring because of that.

And I react very strongly to any kind of relationship angst, so when that part happened, with the inevitable , I was not happy. I just hate that plot device in all books, not just in this one.

The orgy was okay (Ryan has a fantasy of being gangbanged and Misha makes it happen, while being present), but I felt it was a bit emotionless somehow. I’m not sure why that was. But I could have gone without. It didn’t really add anything to the story for me.

So overall this was an enjoyable BDSM story, but it could have used a bit more relationship development and a little less sex. And I wasn’t a fan of the relationship angst. But it was still a nice story and I enjoyed it.

**** Feelings run deep, long standing beliefs are deeper, and impenetrable.
Mikhail and Ryan meet at fencing practice,

where Ryan asks for lessons.

Their time together begins with fencing, and grows into sex, but it is so much more.

Poor, jaded Ryan,26, a student, is a lonely soul, who needs to figure out that every relationship isn't a battle, a maneuver, or a bargain. Ryan's experience with "love" his whole life is ingrained, and his family is to blame; they perpetuated it. They are soulless, uncaring, and have no conscience.

Mikhail, 45, Professor and Dom, needs to get through that hard wall if they are to succeed.
Ryan's family "... left him feeling like nothing..."

* This is a well written story with extremely well done BDSM scenes, intricate descriptions and meanings defined. Magnificent !

It's super sexy, erotic, with fireworks, sizzle, simmer and flash.
Loved these men together, younger/older, yummy. Every detail of the D/s relationship is explained.

We are given lots of introspective thoughts. Figuring out life and why we are the way we are, is something we all do. Ryan has only seen deceit, where no one has ever just given without wanting something in return. He's confused, trying to finally find his own way and letting go of past influences. Easier said than done.
The fencing lessons continue throughout and a completion, too. We also see Ryan's talents as an artist. His family really is full of heartless beings. Mikhail lightly prods Ryan to reveal his past, so he can understand, and some of Ryan's secrets come out. Mikhail doesn't want Ryan's money, he just wants Ryan.

We learn even more about Ryan's miserable family. Can it really be as simple as our two men against the world, our lovers turning into partners?
While our guys advance in BDSM play, fencing and their school work, Ryan is seeing things differently, but can he trust his thoughts?
* This is a beautifully written story by L. A. Witt; filled with hot, raw, dirty, passionate sexiness and a deeply moving set of bondage scenes. Intense. Demanding. Comforting. BSDM done correctly.
The tale flows smoothly, and is hard to put down. Ryan sees glimpses of what Mikhail and he could have, and likes it.
I can't tell more. You must experience this explosive story yourselves. Fabulous.

I've read Cherise Sinclair, Eden Bradley, etc, for their beautifully written M/F BDSM tales, but I think this one surpassed them.
I highly recommend this book. ENJOY !

I have mixed feelings about this novel. I liked the teacher / student relationship at the beginning. I would have liked to have more of it. From my point of view, in BDSM novels in general, the authors feel too much forced to put sex scenes in all chapters or at least in one chapter out of two. For me, SM has never been so strongly linked to sexual intercourses. Or if there are sex scenes, the balance of power must persist between the two MCs and be clearly demonstrated in them (at least, most of the time). Here, as in all BDSM novels, there are chapters devoted solely to whipping and sex.

And for the rest of the story, it is almost exclusively pages and pages where the two MCs rack their brains to know whether they should pursue the relationship or not, whether the other is really in love or they should break up. And the description of these doubts last far too long for my taste. As for the question of Ryan’s family... To read the description of one of their meetings, to “hear” one of their telephone discussions, and I already had enough. But there are many of them throughout the novel.

It's a shame, because the basic idea was good. And that for once the young sub is richer than the older dom is good too. The care that Mikhail takes to provide exactly what Ryan needs in the dungeon is also very well. Probably, most of the readers would like to submit to such a dom. But there is nothing very original in the SM activities: flogging and whipping, nothing else.

So, in summary, I'm disappointed.

‘The Master Will Appear’ is L.A. Witt’s newest release. It’s BDSM with an age gap and a sub who has no idea what he wants or who he really is and some scorching hot sex.

Ryan appears in Mikhail’s life as an arrogant young fencer who in Mikhail’s eyes needs to be taught a lesson in humility. It’s only after delivering that humility in the form of a sparring match that Ryan approaches Mikhail and with his new-found humility ask the older, more experienced fencer to mentor him that Mikhail truly looks at him and sees his potential surprising himself as much as Ryan with his agreement.

As Ryan’s lessons in fencing proceed the attraction between the two men grows. Initially Mikhail is somewhat resistant feeling that the age gap between them is too much. But as Ryan’s need to submit becomes apparent the two strike another bargain and Mikhail agrees to teach Ryan what it means to be a submissive.

The relationship between these two men was more than a little complicated by several factors and I loved that this was not a case of insta-love. Sure, they were attracted to each other it was a physical attraction but that’s a real life thing that happens all the time. I think most of us have at one time or another have seen someone who at first glance catches our attention and makes our blood race a little and maybe even leaves us a little breathless.

It’s only as they spend time together and actually get to know each other that both of these men begin to feel like there could be more and it’s definitely up to Mikhail to take that first step given how cynical and relationship phobic Ryan is especially for someone his age…he’s young to be so cynical and sadly it’s thanks to a family that’s definitely the poster image for dysfunctional.

It’s this emotional connection that develops between Ryan and Mikhail that added so much intensity to their relationship for me. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book where I actually felt the connection between the MCs the way that I did here. For me it was strong…intense if you will. That first time that Mikhail told Ryan to kneel I didn’t wonder if he would, if this was the point at which their relationship would shift to another level. In my mind the instant Mikhail said ‘kneel’ Ryan was kneeling. It was a done deal.

As strongly as I felt Ryan’s desire to please Mikhail as his sub, I also felt Mikhail’s desire to care for Ryan to give and be what he needed to keep himself balanced and safe.

‘The Master Will Appear’ worked as a story for me because I need to believe in the unwavering level of trust that is needed to make a relationship work between a Dom and their sub, as well as feeling that being a Dom or a sub is a part of the character’s nature and I may be wrong here but I’ve always felt that being a Dom or a sub is a part of a persons nature the same as being gay, lesbian, bi or straight…it’s just something that’s there and part of that persons nature. It’s not about deciding or not deciding…it just is. The choice isn’t about whether you are or aren’t. It’s whether you act on it or not, whether your true to yourself or not. With this story I got those feelings…the unwavering trust and the feeling that Mikhail was what Ryan needed in order to finally be true to who he was to explore that hidden part of himself and feel safe.

Now comes the tricky part there was one particular scene in this book and if you’ve read the book…you know what I’m talking about and if not, I apologize for how vague I’m about to be but giving details would be way more spoilerish than I want to be. I’m just going to say that I’m a bit torn on this scene because honestly while it’s not something I would have chosen to have in a story I think in this case because of why it happened and everything that resulted afterwards it was relevant and necessary. Also, surprisingly I have to say it was well done and *fans self* definitely hot! So not my choice to have happen in a story but I tip my hat to Ms. Witt…she nailed it…I might have done a re-read on this part…but just once…honest.

At the end of it all no matter how it starts or what kind of a relationship it becomes I need to feel that it’s healthy and good for all parties involved and with Ryan and Mikhail it worked. These two men complimented each other beautifully not that they were perfect…just that they were perfect for each other and I was left feeling that what they had together as a couple made each of them better as individuals…for me that’s how a relationship should work.

This is an opposites attract romance that starts off with a rocky first meeting on the fencing piste, and quickly morphs into a relationship based on lessons in discipline, submission and just possibly love.

Although Misha was driven to take the cocky, young fencer down a peg when he first showed up at the club, Misha doesn’t need to put on a show. He is a man and a Dom that oozes control. He never expected the aggressive, somewhat clueless young fencer to get so far under his skin. Ryan has so much baggage. He moved across the country to escape his family and find himself. He is hoping to find his own thing in college. Fencing started off as a way to try to show up his father, but he has taken it back up for himself. He didn’t realize how undisciplined he was until Misha showed him up. Ryan talks the sexy, older man into giving him fencing lessons, but their initial dislike of each other paired with their mutual sexual attraction is quite powerful. On top of that, Misha sees the subtle signs of submission and Ryan’s strong reaction to even the smallest praise. They soon find themselves in a “no strings” sexual relationship with Misha teaching Ryan how to submit when he’s not teaching him how to fence. Ryan takes to it beautifully finding something he was always missing out on.

You’d think it would be the thrice-divorced 45 year old Mikhail (“Misha”) who was sour on relationships, but it’s 26 year old Ryan who wants none of that. His now divorced parents have done a number on him in so many ways (they are truly awful people), leaving him unable to trust any sort of relationship. No strings attached sex is fine for him, maybe friendship. Misha is a romantic whose less than perfect past relationships haven’t changed his optimistic outlook on love.

“He was everything I had no business falling for, and everything I couldn’t help falling for.”

The more time they spend with each other, the more the intensity of their scenes build. Ryan is a beautiful submissive and Misha is falling for him, willing to give him anything and everything his heart and mind desires. Ryan has never known any relationship that that doesn’t come with strings attached or manipulative intent and he is constantly waiting for Misha to try to cash in, wondering what Misha could possibly be getting from their relationship. He ignores any sign that Misha truly just wants to make him happy until finally Misha does the one thing that pushes Ryan over the edge.

The age gap worked wonderfully for me here. Misha is the teacher and Ryan the student in all aspects of this story, but Ryan still manages to surprise Misha with his talents and his generous nature. Ryan’s growth and learning to trust and love is the main arc of the story. Misha is steady from the start and his confidence as a Dom made everything that much sexier. He knows what Ryan is looking for and is willing to give him anything he wants to try. Misha’s most creative punishment had me laughing while cringing as even the masochistic Ryan had trouble with it. I’m also grateful that L.A. Witt follows the classic rule of writing that says don’t tease with a gangbang in the first act if you’re not going to follow through. The men communicate beautifully for the most part, except for the one stumbling block Ryan can’t seem to overcome.

This book was almost perfect for me. Age gap, BDSM a bit of hurt-comfort and a teacher-student dynamic. The fencing scenes (a sport I know nothing about) were vividly written and even I had no issues picturing exactly what was going on. There were one or two spots I felt were repetitive, giving us information we already had. There was also one scene we were told about that I would have liked to have seen on page, but these were minor in the overall scope of the story. This was a fantastic love story, with hot BDSM scenes, plenty of emotional moments and a very happy ending. I highly recommend it.

4.5 stars rounded up.
This might have been my favourite book by L.A. Witt... ;)

The beginning was fascinating. I like watching fencing at the Olympics very much, so the work that Mikhail and Ryan did together during their foil lessons wasn't even a bit boring. In fact I missed their piste sessions further on in the book. I could definitely do with some more of this calculating, tactical and... sweaty dynamic ;)

The sexy times in The Master Will Appear we simply delicious! Some of the best BDSM scenes I've come across for a long time :) I've read some other kinky books by L.A. Witt and I enjoyed most of them but here I've found that spark, that chemistry that drew Ryan in to Misha (and me to them both) in their bedroom.

The only little thing that the story lacked (and hence 4.5 instead of a full 5-star rating) is something that would show how Ryan, for a change, takes care of Misha, either in bed or outside of it. Because the chemistry between them was palpable but the hurt/comfort aspect of their relationship was rather one-sided...

All in all, I loved how Mikhail/Misha and Ryan found their way to be together, as Dom/sub, but also boyfriends and coach/student partners.
And now I'm very curious of Gene's story, too ;)

L.A. Witt's writing is hit or miss for me and this one here was a complete HIT!!! After seeing this book show up on my GR feed soooo many times, and after hearing how much people liked it (for the most part), I grabbed the chance to read this one asap! I enjoy age gap romance, and then to have a student-teacher dynamic as well as Dom and Submissive? Yep, I wasn't passing up the chance to read this one. If those are things you like in your MM romance too, this book will not disappoint.

You already know a lot from the blurb about Misha and Ryan and how their relationship grows. What the blurb doesn't tell you is that it's not all about dominance and submission - there are sweet and gentle times as well (Vanilla). I found it super endearing that when Misha asks Ryan what he would not be able to give up in a relationship Ryan says kissing. And, oh, boy. Do these two men know how to kiss! ;) And I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that their entire relationship wasn't all whips and chains. For as much time as Ryan was submissive, there were equal times where they were equals in the bedroom. It was all about balance and pleasing ones partner - THAT I enjoyed. I'm not opposed to hard and heavy BDSM novels, but I also enjoy the softer moments where there is just cuddling too. And The Master Will Appear gave me exactly what I needed.

At no point did I feel like the story was dragging on or there were scenes that felt pointless. Everything that was on page felt necessary to show Misha and Ryan's growing and changing relationship, Ryan's familial history and how he became cynical towards "love." For the majority of this story, Misha and Ryan have balance and caring in their relationship. That's not to say Ryan doesn't harbor doubts about what Misha is really getting out of this relationship, but Ryan pushes that aside and tries to focus only on the present and not worry about when the relationship will sour (because Ryan is certain that it will since that's all he knows).

I highly recommend this story and feel this is worthy of 5 stars. I was surprised by the events in the epilogue but that didn't matter enough to make me change my rating. I hope we get to see more of Misha and Ryan (and maybe Gene will get his own story, *sends telepathic message to Witt*). I didn't want to put this book down and eagerly awaited the moment I could pick it up again.

En garde, pret, allez!

This was so so good. Now, first of all I'm not someone who's into reading bdsm. I mean I can appreciate it, and if it's your thing then you'll probably go nuts for this book. It features an m/m couple and its main feature is their Dom-Sub relationship. There a little sadism and masochism thrown in too but nothing brutal or violent. There is also the fencing element which I adored! The Dom in this story is also the Sub's fencing coach, and also roughly 20 years his senior. HELLO AGE GAP!!
This book has minor angst, a lovely bit of grovelling towards the end. A pretty fantastic mix if you ask me.

Now what I will say is that the Dom-Sub relationship was everything I wanted it to be. You'd think it was some big power play especially given the age gap between characters but there is a beautiful relationship building. It's not abusive and it's definitely caring. Misha takes such good care of Ryan, even after an intense scene his first thoughts are after care and making sure that Ryan is okay, that he hasn't been hurt. It was so refreshing to see a couple who take care of each other especially in a bdsm novel. Too often it's an abusive or one-sided relationship in these kinds of books. It's so nice to see an author give the reader a positive and healthy couple regarding fetish and kink.
Also, some of the scenes were damn hot.... just saying.

The fencing was brilliant. It was quite the main focus at the beginning of the novel, then the more the relationship grew the more it became a subplot. Which I didn't mind, as I'm sure that most people wouldn't read this book for the fencing. But if, like me, you enjoy/have an interest in fencing this shouldn't disappoint in that area. It was well described and when the characters were sparring it felt as though I was there watching them on the piste.

This was my first L.A Witt novel and it certainly won't be my last. I have quite a few of hers on my radar. I look forward to reading more from her very soon.

I loved this book the first time I read it but after listening to the audio this one of those rare occasions where I've been left dumbfounded by how much I feel that I missed the first time around. I just feel like I picked up on some much more of what was between Mikhail and Ryan and the dynamics of Ryan's family and how it affected him. I am going to be rolling this one around in my brain for a while to come and I'm fairly positive that's also going to include listening to the audio book one more time.

Mostly I'm blaming this on Michael Ferraiuolo and the incredible job he did of narrating this story. I've been a fan of this narrator since listening to Santino Hassell's 'Five Boroughs' series but with this audio book this narrator has gone from someone who's audio books I really enjoy to 'must have in my m/m audiobook library'.

As for the actual story after taking the time time to reread my original review for the e-book I'm not going to re-invent the wheel or re-write this review so here a link if you're curious...

I'm definitely recommending this one.

4.5* for the story
4* for the audio

Michael did a good job narrating this story.
While he gave Misha an accent, he didn't actually fully narrate Misha's POV in said accent, which I was thankful for, just when Misha was actually talking did he have the "Russian" accent. I put that in quoted because he actually sounded exactly like one of my customers, who is NOT Russian lol
Was it bad? No, it just wasn't very Russian to me (because of the above statement). I'm sure others will feel differently.

I loved his narration for Ryan, I thought he portrayed him perfectly. His frustrations, his arrogance, all of it.

He really does bring this story into another dimension. I can feel when Misha cocks his head and looks at Ryan, or Ryan's frustrations...among other things ;)

As for the stories review:
Ryan and Misha meet at a fencing tournament where Ryan is competing at.

Misha being an older, experienced fencer sees how Ryan's sword work is aggressive and arrogant, so he decides he wants to bring him down a notch. Once beaten, he doesn't expect the words Ryan says to come out of his mouth. In fact, a lot of the words that come out of Ryan's mouth he doesn't expect.

Ryan broke my heart. He's so completely jaded and cynical about love and relationships. It's no wonder when you finally uncover all his guarded truths. The truths are some Whoppers too. I found myself breaking down with him. Normally I can't connect to characters such as his, but he really is a humble guy, and you can't NOT feel for him.

Mikhail, or Misha, was also a bit unexpected. Not only does he teach fencing now and again, but he's also a college professor, but a Dom (a good one at that). On top of that, he's a deep rooted romantic. Even though his many attempts failed, he still believes in love. It just adds into the fact of how opposite these two are, yet they couldn't be more perfect for each other.

Now, I mention the professor part, no he's not Ryan's professor. Yes, there's a large age gap, and while there's student/teacher aspects, it's not the taboo "they're going to get busted" kind of story. Those always make me so nervous!!

This story is wonderfully written. I never knew a story about fencing as a sport could be so intriguing, but it was. It wasn't ALL there was to it either. There was the Dom/Submissive relationship, Ryan's schooling and family, and OMG the best part? Misha bringing one of Ryan's fantasies to fruition. *fans face* You should read it for that alone! LOL!

Needless to say, I smiled, I cried, and I completely rooted for these guys. The ending was perfect, and I couldn't have asked for more.

Fabulous exercise in how to write a submission romance

LA Witt is one of my favourite writers no matter which section of the MM genre she's focussing on and this book is a stunning example of her BDSM work.

The BDSM in this book is light, it's a Dom/sub pairing with some pain play but mostly it's an exercise in how one man, taught his whole life that he's worthless, can come to discover he's the most precious thing in the world.

The fencing setting was also fabulous, as I actually have friends who fence for the British Olympic team and who train the British Paralympians, and it made a change from the normal mainstream sports setting.

I loved both Ryan and Misha, and their emotional and sexual connections were incredible, the Dom/sub scenes were sensual and the consensual 'gang bang' was blissfully erotic and never felt like porn.

This book also has a wonderful epilogue.

Another fantastic story by Ms Witt. Told from dual POV, it describes an incredible journey of two men, who are complete opposites, falling in love. First-rate Age gap BDSM romance. The characters are wonderfully written, even the fencing between them is enthralling. I loved them both.

Mikhail Budnikov is a romantic at heart. Despite three divorces he still believes in love and devotion. He loves his job and his fencing lessons. In fact, he is considered one of the best in the area. When he decides to teach a fellow arrogant fencer a lesson, never in a million years does he think that it will change his life forever. I really liked him - his stern demeanor in the piste and his gentle caring manner when in private. But Misha wielding a whip was magnificent. I loved his scenes with Ryan. Besides them being hot, they were always so heart-felt even in the beginning.

Ryan O'Connor is a very conflicted young man. His life has been spent between two parents who always made him unworthy. He has never seen love or people caring about anything but money and power. When he meets Mikhail, at first there is animosity between them. But Misha sees under all the attitude to the lonely young man in need of someone loving him fiercely. A chance encounter that brings Ryan to his knees, gives both men an opportunity to explore Ryan's sexual desires and fantasies. What starts as simple s*ex arrangement, swiftly grows into strong feelings on both sides. But where Misha knows and acknowledges them, Ryan readily denies them.

It was hard to read Ryan struggle. He genuinely couldn't fathom Misha's intentions and any chance that love can be real. His family did a number on him. Poor jaded Ryan. His parents kept punishing him for their own sins. I just wanted to give him a hug. When Misha makes Ryan's fantasy come true, it backfires spectacularly on them both. The magic of the night dissolves under harshness of reality. I really felt sorry for Ryan. His inability to see how toxic his family was, his inability to let himself believe in love kept him from truly leaving everything behind and being happy. He might have moved to another coast to escape his family, but they still had their claws jabbed deep into his psych. He hurt both Misha and himself. I am glad to say that through a lot of soul-searching Ryan was able to see that Misha's feelings were honest and real and gave himself a chance.

The ending was so sweet and romantic. I loved where both men were as a couple. Ryan has come so far in life. I really liked this book, and I highly recommend it.

4.5 stars -I really liked this book a lot. There was something about Ryan's vulnerability and Mikhails ability to read his emotions and body language that connected with me. While I do love a good BDSM book, this was secondary for me and was more about unpacking an emotionally messed up young man. This book wasn't perfect but I really wanted to keep reading, I was clearly hooked !

A very convincing relationship with a significant age-gap and well-developed BDSM elements.

CW: , frankly neglectful parenting, parent with alcoholism
Representation: Older MC (45), pansexual MC

When Mikhail (Misha) knocks an arrogant young fencer down a peg, he doesn't expect him to ask for lessons and he certainly doesn't expect to find the perfect submissive for him, yet that's what Ryan proves to be.

The relationship development between Misha and Ryan was very convincing. They dive fairly quickly into the sexual side of things, and the emotional growth happens progressively on a timeline that feels very realistic.

The same can be said about the angst, which is never over the top, but mounts gradually as we find out more about Ryan's traumatic family past. I really felt for him and hope he got the therapy he needed because his parents are awful. Terrible people.

The sex is very well-written, and I think struck a good BDSM balance between formal negotiations and explicit consent, and a more flexible exploration of Ryan's limits. I loved the internal conflict Ryan has while Misha is using the single whip, an endless cycle of praying for relief, and praying for more. I also appreciated how Misha reassured Ryan that he was more than happy to also have "vanilla" sex with him, that them spending time together didn't rely on Ryan submitting to him.

I struggled a bit with the impetus of the conflict, but it's in no way a failing of the book, just something I personally find a bit triggering.

It was no surprise that there was going to be a conflict though, because while things are going well for Misha, he knows that Ryan isn't ready for the emotional side of their relationship. From Ryan's point of view, we see increasing thoughts about the transactional nature of all of his relationships, and this isn't something that he knows how to address.

It of course comes together very nicely in the end. We don't get to spend much time with them as a fully-formed couple but the conclusion was realistic and the epilogue satisfying.

All in all, a very enjoyable read.

The narration was fabulous. The accents and different voices were easily distinguishable, as was the internal monologue. 5 stars to Michael Ferraiuolo as well!

Sexual content: Explicit, well-written, frequent. Handjobs, blowjobs, prostate stimulation, anal sex (vers).
Kink: D/s, impact play, orgasm denial, bondage, toys

The good
+ Ryan's courage in asking Misha for lessons
+ Misha's patience and what he saw behind Ryan's cocky armor
+ Misha being incredibly affectionate in the bedroom
    + All the forehead kisses!
+ Misha indulging in kisses, cuddles and affection whenever he could get away with it
+ Misha's different teaching styles. His professor attitude was so different from his coaching attitude
+ Neither of them caring about what others thought of their relationship
    +
    +
    + The epilogue.

The neutral
o Misha was really thorough with teaching Ryan the importance of consent, and making sure he knew his safewords. But he never gave Ryan a non-verbal safeword for when he couldn't speak
o Misha said he was only mildly sadistic, and then told Ryan one of his favorite punishments was making a sub kneel on LEGOs. Now that's extremely sadistic! *shudders*

The bad
    - Misha made it possible for Ryan to fulfill his fantasy in a safe manner. He arranged everything perfectly, and Ryan loved it. And then
    - Ryan's father and Ryan should totally have rubbed that in his smug face

Quotes
This man had a whole closet full of whips and chains, and I swore his hands were gentler than anyone who'd ever touched me.

"The whole idea of getting married just blows my mind. Okay, yeah, you get a few perks, but you're basically throwing a fifty-thousand-dollar party and betting half your assets you'll keep liking this person."

This book was amazing. Ryan's past and the way he felt about love were so intense, and his journey to becoming Misha's partner and truly believing he deserved love was just beautiful. These men really deserve each other. Would absolutely recommend this book.

DNF @ 34%. I didn't care for the MCs. Misha was weird and wishy-washy. Ryan was an emotional train wreck. I could see where Ryan's gang bang fantasy was going and I didn't want to read about an open relationship. Nope, this one was a miss for me.

What a great book! I loved the way the relationship between Ryan and Misha developed. I loved them both, from the first to the last page of the book and had fun joining them on their journey.
And Misha making Ryan's fantasy come true? That was H.O.T!
