Whether you like it or not, if you have a dog you are training it. The question is are you training it for good or are you training it for bad. Training starts before training starts. How you live with your dog dictates how your dog lives with you. They learn from everything we do, good and bad. They miss nothing. They know us better than we know ourselves. They learn from everything we don't do. Obedience commands don't create a well behaved dog. Raising a dog and teaching along the way does. No parent says they are going outside to train their kids. We just raise them and teach them 24 hours a day and try to provide guidance so eventually our children can make the right decisions on their own. Dogs are no different. Live right with them. They are not children. They are animals and must be respected as such. And they are a precious gift that are not here long enough so enjoy every minute and never take them for granted.
I read this as a companion to Michael Ellis’s online course on the use of the electric collar, and I appreciate the two perspectives on how to teach a dog what an e collar is. Krohn gives a thorough explanation of finding a dog’s working level and the early stages of introduction. However, I wish he would have written more explicitly about how not to use the e collar and how to use the e collar carefully in high-stress situations, like dog reactivity. I doubt this book is “everything” one needs to know about an e collar.
Overall, this book was a little hard to read and oddly organized—a lot of disjointed anecdotes and philosophies. I watch his Youtube videos, and Krohn is a great teacher, but he is not a writer; he would have benefited from an editor to give his choppy, short sentences a better flow and to organize his content.
While I am a big fan of Larry’s work, I felt that the book could have been twice as long and it would have made it 8 times more valuable. I liked the idea behind the book, but felt that it lacked enough details / examples to give it the depth for me to feel certain that I was understanding everything as intended. It feels to me as though the book was specifically designed to be a very quick read that compliments the videos on Larry’s YouTube channel. I think they certainly pair well. While I was interested in the tips, it certainly didn’t feel like I’d learned everything I needed to know - would have loved more.
I really respect Larry’s approach and straight-forward, way of communication. I get it because of how he teaches it. I have never really considered e-collar training but I’m also very open minded and I want to learn anything that I come across that can help dogs and their people. Especially from trainers who are caring and who put the dogs needs first, who also have proven success after success! Larry’s book and his videos are done in a language I totally understand and I’m now inspired to add the e-collar to my tools. Thanks for giving me a new and exciting way to approach training.
If you have no experience with e collars then you can probably read the first few pages and get the gist of it. The rest is just reiterating what was said in the first few pages. I read this for information so I hate to even bring this up but there clearly wasn’t much editing or proofreading done before this book was put out. Which is fine, but it’s there. It probably could have been a small pamphlet instead of coloring book sized. It’s whatever. I got some new info but idk if it needed to be a book. I honestly don’t feel like I got much more information than I did from the instruction booklet that came with the e collar. It does have a beautiful rottie on the cover tho so that helps :)
When I stumbled on this book while studying for implimenting an e-collar I was very pleasantly surprisedat the different perspective for how an e-collar should be used. I'm definately going to be adhering to the author's philosphies going forward, I'm so glad I got the chance to see this new way to impliment this great tool before I actually start working with dogs myself. This is definately going to be on my "required reading" list for any clients I have in the future.
More than half this microbiology is taken up with him reciting his successes with dog x. No actual instruction in any of that; maybe a couple don'ts, like, " don't use an e collar". Why would I want to hear about that? No actual theory expressed in terms of operant conditioning. Anecdotes, a haphard list of dos and don'ts, a very brief description of a small amount of training, leaving you with little to base any kind of decision-making for your own dog.
Educational and positive!!!! I had bought an e collar to compliment training my rescue beagle mix. But wanted to read up before using it, since my dog is insecure. My family and friends are mostly against it. But I know that they have been expose to those that have abuse its purpose. This book proves my point. It is easy to read, and author/trainer explains his methods in detail. I will definitely check out his website for further education and inspiration.
What a treasure. So much more to this book than e collar training. It provides the reader with a simplified way to understand dog training, dog behavior and how to appropriately use tools. Krohn’s love for the animal is apparent. I have used an e collar for 3 years, however this book taught me much more bout this important tool. I have begun the training protocol that Larry suggests and I am already seeing improvements . Well done
Larry is one of the best in the industry when it comes to electronic collar training for dogs. He takes the time to explain in great detail how to properly train and the methodology behind it. You will not be disappointed reading this guide if your want to properly learn how to remote collar train your dog.
I started my dog training and was scared that I would make a mistake that I would not be able to correct. After reading this book I cannot wait to start training my dogs. The case studies and stories I could relate to. Easy reading. Thanks Larry Krohn for sharing.
Larry Krohn explains ecollar training in such a clear way! The stories of the dogs he's worked with was super encouraging too! Especially the reactive and aggressive cases! I look forward to adding what I've learned from this book to my training knowledge! Highly suggest this book to all dog trainers!
If you’re looking for a book that helps explain the benefits of using an electronic collar, look no further! E collars have a lot of controversy around them and usually the problem lies in people not understanding and misusing them. Larry Krohn is the king of E collar usage and this book is easy to read and helps you understand what an important tool they can be
This is a reasonable introduction to ecollars. I think I would have gotten more out of it if I had not had previous knowledge. A little too many tangets and talk on all kinds of training that had nothing to do with ecollars just so he could brag about how little corrections he gives.
Easy understand language when it comes to conditioning and using an e-collar on your dog. Has some nice stories about dog training as well. Definitely a must read if you want more information or you're stuck on the fence about e-collars.
Larry's instructions are clear and easy to follow. He loves dogs and it shows. His methods are not harsh, the dogs he works with are happy and looking to please. I can't wait to try this with more dogs!
I agree with his approach that the e-collar should never hurt your dog, if you use it correctly. I disagree with him on a couple of points, but overall this book is a good place to start if you need to work your dog off leash.
A quick read for anyone curious about e collars. Overall really great Info but I wish it had gone a bit more in depth. Also for some reason I assumed this would be novel shaped, but it's more like a magazine.
Mr. Krohn is a valuable resource and asset! I'm happy that I found him.
I spend a lot of time with Mr. Krohn each day, both with this book and his YouTube channel. Roca is becoming the best dog I have ever had, thanks to him!
Great instruction on ecollar training, especially with behavior problems, integrating with positive reinforcement and teaching the dog what you want. It’s not for punishment, and is more about guidance.
I found the first couple of chapters very helpful as they addressed getting your dog introduced to the collar and then conditioning, intermittent, and maintenance phases. After that it was pretty disjointed.
Very good content if you are looking to start using an e-collar. I took off one star only because there were several grammatical mistakes throughout the book.
