BOOK ONE: HOME HE THOUGHT HE WAS PREPARED. HE THOUGHT HIS FAMILY WAS SAFE. HE WAS WRONG.
Five years after a pneumonic plague killed two-thirds of the world’s population, army veteran Marcus Battle is isolated. He’s alone with his guns, his food, and the graves of his wife and child.
Unaware of the chaos that’s befallen everything outside of his central Texas ranch land, Marcus lives a Spartan life. If anyone steps onto his property he shoots first and never ask questions.
But when a woman in distress, chased by marauders, seeks asylum, Marcus has a decision to make.
Does he throw her to the wolves to protect himself or does he help her and leave the shelter and protection of home?
BOOK TWO: CANYON HE’S HOMELESS. HE’S ON THE RUN. AND HE WANTS REVENGE.
Marcus Battle has left behind his home.
Now he’s on a seemingly impossible mission to find a missing child. But can he balance that responsibility with his deep, primal desire to exact revenge on the men who destroyed his solitary existence?
The world he discovers on his journey isn’t the one he remembers before a pneumonic plague called The Scourge killed two-thirds of the world’s population. It is lawless, depraved, and far-deadlier than the disease which created it.
Battle made a promise to find that child. It’s a promise he regrets more acutely with every step of the journey where he is as much the hunter as he is the hunted.
BOOK 3: WALL HE SURVIVED THE SCOURGE. HE ESCAPED THE CARTEL. NOW HE FACES THE WALL.
In the chaos of a global plague, evil took hold. Governments fell, the good became servants, and the Cartel rose to power.
A wall was built to contain the wasteland and keep the evil at bay. Now an organized resistance wants change. They're willing to fight for it and they've asked Marcus Battle to help.
The last thing Battle wants is another war. But if that's what it takes to gain freedom and safe passage to the other side of the wall, he'll take aim and fire.
Well written story of what our country may be in the future. A pandemic influenza has been discussed as a real possibility and then what happens is anyone's story to spin.
Enjoyed the first 3 books. Great development of characters and just enough flashbacks to give good background info. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
This post-apocalyptic series is great! The plot is original and realist, and the characters are believable. The author's writing style provides an entertaining story that has the perfect combination of drama, action, thrills and suspense. Highly recommend this one!
Books 1-3. I am thankful I had the opportunity to read the whole series at one time. I got started and couldn't tap my kindle fast enough. I especially enjoyed the flashbacks that coincided with his present circumstances. Excellent read.
This is a 22 hour listen about a post-apocalyptic world. A flea born illness wipes out over two-thirds of the world population. There is no cure, but there is natural immunity. This review references Books 1 - Home, 2 - Canyon, and 3- Wall.
Plot. Marcus Battle, a PTSD victim, returns to Texas and loses his son and wife to the plague; he speaks to them and hears them speak to him. Marcus also lives as a hermit on his land, defending it with shoot-first, so you don't need to ask questions. After months of solitude, Marcus rescues a woman being chased by a cult of marauders. The marauders have her son. They successfully burn Marcus's house down. Under a facade of revenge, Marcus and the woman set out to rescue her son and rid Texas of these thugs. The story has a considerable slice of flashbacks to Marcus' time in service - when he nearly dies to rescue his badly injured friend. Will Marcus conquer his own demons, rescue the boy of a stranger? Stay alive?
Liked. Good character development, easy to visualize action, well-organized plot over three novels. No sex, no explicit language. Decent narration and production.
Not so hot. There are some holes in an apocalyptic world, in my opinion. No mention of shortages of essentials like gasoline, medicine, etc., all that would surely be horrific.
There is more to the story - and, I'm sure, in sequels to come. Too much left to happen!
Written by By Tom Abrahams, narrated by Kevin Pierce in unabridged audiobook format, released in March 2016-19 by Piton Press LLC.
I'm familiar with some of Tom Abrahams' work, having previously read (and mostly enjoyed) this Spaceman trilogy, which I understand was written after the books in this volume.
This one I took longer to bond with, and I almost abandoned it at about the 7% mark, having mused abut how one actually pronounces TEOTWAWKI since it was said out loud by one character, and after seeing how the ... determinately named Marcus Battle had chosen the name of his son. I was afraid the Mad Max nickname was because he was a warrior of the wasteland.
Two revelations saved the series for me. The first was the in-text acknowledgement that Battle was a deeply broken person with psychological issues, and thus the Mad Max nickname was a little more appropriate.
The second came a bit later, when , and it became apparent that this was not so much anything as a novelisation of an as-yet unreleased Far Cry game.
I did notice a couple of editorial lapses - once where a character familiar with Syrian dress speaks of a hijab when I think they really meant a niqab, and another where a character was mistakenly identified as another who was a few hundred km away, if I remember rightly. These did not detract notably from the thrust of the story.
Taken on those terms, it was fun, and I've already bought Book Four.
Books must be read in order. No cliff hangers, but the story continues onto the next book. In this book, which sounds eerily familiar, a pandemic (referred to as the Scourge) caused by an airborne bacterium has struck and the only survivors are those that are naturally immune creating anarchy when governments collapse. In this chaos Marcus Battle, a former Army Captain and now a civilian prepper has built and stocked his isolated home ready for any unforeseen threats before the pandemic hit. His isolated, structured life changes when a woman running from the Cartel comes onto his property. The Cartel rules over the former state of Texas by violence and fear with little opposition. They poked the sleeping bear making the mistake of underestimating him secure in their position of power. The book flips from the start of the pandemic to the present, five years from the advent of the Scourge so it gives the reader the background that leads to the present. The beginning of each chapter has the date, time, and location listed which makes it easy to keep track of where the plot is. Non-stop action makes for a quick read. Onto the next book.
I have enjoyed some YA dystopian books before, and so I thought I would give an adult dystopian book a shot.
The story is non stop action from the first sentence to the very last. You feel like one of the characters in the story. You are constantly on the move from the mafia that now controls what used to be the United States. The story line is realistic, the plot is captivating, and the characters are well thought out. I liked that there were no crazy sex scenes, extreme goriness, or awful language. I enjoyed each book more then the one previous to it, and they are all fantastic.
Kevin Pierce does an amazing job and is consistent from book to book. His voice is perfect for dystopian novels. I would listen to a book again just because of his voice. Each character has a distinct voice and he does do a female voice well.
I received this audiobook at my request, and I provided this voluntary review.
I tried to like this book (series) but I couldn’t get past the implausibility of so much of this story. The author tried to make things more realistic with (dated) details and that is where he really lost me as a reader. One shouldn’t assume so much from the “future” in a story when you’re hinging so much on details from a past that any reasonable thinking person cannot believe would still be relevant. I read other reviews, some of them stating that the story will having you wanting to keep reading. I sigh and think “No, it will keep my eyes rolling so much that they might get lost in the back of my head!” I’m inclined to believe that we have very real reason to prepare for inevitable disasters, but this story has too many flaws to carry that belief any further into the realm of helpfulness.
Well, this book is about a rigid military man who was a warrior officer in the 2020's in wars in Syria and other places. He was a prepper for end of the world scenarios. He had land, a home, beloved wife and young son and worked on prepping the home and had everything and then some to be ready for "the end". I'm not going to relay any spoilers but in the three books, things got worse and worse. The book was filled with names of fancy guns and talk of war and violence that there was no need to share at all. Another tiny spoiler, in narrating the story, the phrase "post apocalyptic" was used ALL THE TIME! It was enough to make myself and husband laugh out loud every time we heard it. Oh well, not a great book.

I really enjoyed this first half of the series. This should technically count as three books read. they were all long enough to count as a full novel each... the traveler series is about a man who survives the plague with his family because he was a prepper ... but things go rapidly down hill after that... with gut-wrenching loss and a little hope and some resourcefulness the protagonist seeks revenge for all those he has lost in this tough post-apocalyptic series... somehow he always finds a just enough of his humanity to go on trying to build relationships in a devastating dog-eat-dog world. Fantastic read!
The Travelers Series Books 1-3. The travelers series by Tom Abrahams Starts out with a bang. Book one, HOME, was a well developed story concerning a man looking for forgiveness. I liked the book so much, I’ve barely put it down in the first few hours it took to read, but the second and third books in this series really start to fall flat on their face without much going on except A lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but more blood than anything else. He is A favorite author of mine but I am disappointed with books 2 and three.
So glad to have found this author! This series of three books is so well written and exciting. I can’t recommend it highly enough. You will not be sorry to read a book without cursing and garbage. He manages to convey the horror of apocalypse without resorting to detailed violence although there is violence that is necessary to the story. No typos, no spelling or grammar errors either. I can’t wait to read the next three books as Battle and His new family try to find their way through this dystopian thriller!
From the ashes of his home Marcus Battle finds his way to rescue Lola’s son Sawyer from the Cartel. They are being used by General Roof but don’t know it yet. Then they meet the leader of The Dwellers and help them defeat the Cartel in their war. Now they are home on his property viewing the burned out house and looking towards the future. A Phoenix is Rising there. This is a well written story with side plots that are interesting at every turn. I’m enjoying it immensely!
Well, if your an Operator, like the maon character supposedly is, l dont know that a DPMS would be the rifle you would trust your life to, but whatever. The main character and his preachy struggles and praying for everyone he shot got tedious, but if you can push through that and the psychotic episodes and ghostly visits from his dead wife and sons, its a way to kill an evening.
Audible:The first three books in the Traveler series are really awesome! We go back and forth in time in the life of Major Balltle. There is before the plague when he was an army man and then afterwards, with him trying to live his life.Everyone in this world can use a gun, lots of death and destruction, but in a good way.lol Kevin Pierce is a terrific narrator. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Overall a great read and throughly enjoyable. Good balance of characters current struggles and flashbacks of how dramatic past events shaped their characters, reset or upset their lives, and shaped their reactions to their new surroundings and new people who, basically, want to end his hermit life.
Authors style was tight and story consistent. Would have enjoyed more details behind the scourge, the society, the Syrian war, the cartel, the dwellers and how Marcus figured out about the spy. Kept my interest, the authors writing style could have delved into more of the societal details.
I liked the continuing action and intrigue. A man continuing to survive after losing his reason for living. Ending up with a new cause. I would recommend this book to anyone that like apocalyptic fiction free of zombies. I gave it four stars because it kept me turning pages.
Good tale - mostly post-apocalyptic battle, which is well writ right from the start. Slides from one book into the other quite well, with different focus-themes for each. I thought it might have inspired the Travelers TV scifi series, which is why I started it, but was both happy for the writing but unfortunately disappointed it was not.
A man left alone after a flu epidemic wiped out 2/3 of the world's population including his wife and son. The United States has been divided by a great wall, and the lower half is ruled by the Cartel which is where he lives, but he is unaware of what is happening bathe has cut himself off with the rest of the world until his world is invaded by a woman asking for help. Tom Abrahams writes to keep your attention to see what will happen next. His characters are very strong. These are books you do not want to miss, they are exciting from start to finish. Happy reading!
The author takes his time developing characters and weaving his story. You will be dragged into it whether you want to be or not. Highly recommend this to anyone who likes post apocalyptic fiction. Definitely one of the best I have read.
Major Battle fights the Scourge, alone and scarred
Major Marcus Battle, U.S. Army, retired, leads the fight in the post-apocalyptic nightmare left by the Scourge. Great characters, great storyline and amazing action. Great read!
Tom has a very good way of telling a story. I just finished the three book series. Not to give away to much however with todays headlines it is to close for comfort. I am downloading book 4 as. I write this. BOTH EOTWAWKI AND MILITARY READERS WOULD LIKE THIS SERIES
This was one exciting read from start to finish. At times it was hard to follow so many characters, but I managed. It was well worth it. Glad I found this great series. Happy ☺reading 📚 and listening!
The series gives you a glimpse of what may come. We don’t have to worry about outside forces being our undoing, but forces within. No matter what you think you never are prepared for the reality of the situation. It was nice to have to a story of mixed results and not everything going perfectly.
