Prince Felix was unworthy of the throne, there was no doubt about it. When he was cast out to prove his worth on a quest of great importance, he was unprepared, but not alone. With the aid of his advisor and a mysterious girl, he faced dark forests that came to life, creatures that rose from the deep, bridges of ice, and mists of souls. Something was wrong in the Field of Mirrors and a terrible fate awaited Avidaura if they failed. Prince Felix wasn’t ready for the world to be resting on his shoulders, but if they didn’t complete the quest, all would be lost.

This is the first book in a series about the world of Avidaura. In it we meet Prince Felix who doesn't seem to think much of responsibility, his father, or any of the people in the kingdom for that matter. he just wants to enjoy his life of luxury. When an urgent need arises in the land that could see everything destroyed, the King decides his son can learn a bit of responsibility and atone for some of his behaviour by being the hero to go on the quest. Alongside, the king's advisor and a mysterious woman who appears as they set out, we see Felix grow a bit, learn what the problem is (it's not something I can say I've seen used before), and get a tour of the kingdom - complete with fairies, trolls, and other dangers. It's great seeing Felix change over the short course of his adventure and the bonds that form between the trio. The world is nicely laid out and defined with an ending that shows just how far Felix has come and sets us up for the next book in the series. It was a joyous read that was almost impossible to put down.
This was a great read from a local author in my area here in Canada. I loved it and was hard to put down. I loved that there wasn't 97 characters in the story to try to remember and had a good pace to it.
