I finished this book because I was already too far in it and kind of intrigued by how the author was going to wrap it up. I'll admit it has some good parts, but.... Well, here we go:

1. Grammar. Grammar is a huuuge turn-off for me. I know the translator is our prime suspect in this one, but--seriously--any 10 yr old could have proofread this manuscript and done a better job.

2. The storytelling needs to be more descriptive, specially with the characters. Reading felt more like reading someone else's summary of the actual book. There was no relating to any characters; you only get a sketch.

3. The story itself has nothing to set it apart from others of this genre. Sure, there's a little bit of mystery, but it lacks in something. Maybe it would work better if improved for a CSI episode or something.

Round two of the "can I read a book in Afrikaans?"

The answer is, "pretty much?"

Again, this review is more for the language learning aspects than the literary quality, but they go somewhat hand in hand.

Compared to "Die Gebreekte Raam," I had a weird feeling. Either this book was riddled with typos, or my reading level has improved to the point that I notice them more. On a storyline type comment, there really seems to be a pattern building in which whoever is dead has a secret relationship and/or marriage. (Not a spoiler, by the way.)

All of that aside though, the plusses from "Raam" are still here. Pretty straight-forward writing, general knowledge language usage (as opposed to technical terms or flowery overkill type language). It's good for somebody at my level, which is solid beginner (A1/2 [at my own random guess]), but not necessarily something you're gonna be up floored by. It's a good ole mystery like most other free mystery ebooks you're gonna find, but the keyword there is "free." And after many a night trying to find materials for learning this language, Mnr. Ruggeri is basically handing you gold.

So, yes, check it out for sure if you find yourself on the Afrikaans path (why that would be, let's just not consider). It's at least as good as anything else I've read in language books; you don't have the contrived situations where everyone is really interested in where the bus stop is/what kind of food you would like to order/what to say in a job interview, unless of course, there is an actual point in the greater story. Which is always a plus. Especially, for those of you ascribing to the "Fluent Forever" mindset, stories help you learn more efficiently all the way around.

So, there ya go. 3 stars is in spite of the typos, somewhat influenced by the story quality, but seriously guys, for learning, Ruggeri is doing us all a great favor.

Libro ligero y moderado.

Está bien.
