49 books41 followersಮಾಸ್ತಿ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಅಯ್ಯಂಗಾರರು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಲೇಖಕರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಎಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತರಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಸಾಹಿತಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಎಂಬ ಕಾವ್ಯನಾಮದಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದರು. ಅನೇಕ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ 'ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಜನಕ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃಷಿಯಿಂದಾಗಿ 'ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಆಸ್ತಿ' ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಕಡೆಯ ರಾಜ ಚಿಕವೀರ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಬರೆದ 'ಚಿಕವೀರ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ' ಎಂಬ ಕೃತಿಗೆ ೧೯೮೩ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಲಭಿಸಿತು.

ಮರು ಓದು - 2
ಕೇವಲ 7 ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ನಡುವೆಯೇ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಭಾರಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮತ್ತೆ ಓದಲೇಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹಠ ಮಾಡಿ ಓದಿಸಿದೆ.
ವೀರವಂತ ರಾಜರ ಕಥೆ ಬರೆದು ಹುರಿದುಂಬಿಸುವದರ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಸೋತ ದುರಂತ ರಾಜರ ಸೋಲಿನ ಕಥೆಯಿಂದ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ಕೊಡುವುದು ತುಂಬಾ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಇದು ಅಂತದ್ದೇ ಸೋತ ರಾಜನ ಕಥೆ, ತನ್ನದೇ ಕಥೆಗೆ ನಾಯಕನು ಖಳನಾಯಕನೂ ಆದ ಚಿಕವೀರರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನ ಕಥೆ.
ಈ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಕಥೆಯ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟ ತೀರಾ ದೂರದ್ದಲ್ಲ. ಕೇವಲ 189 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನದ್ದಷ್ಟೇ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಘಟನೆಗಳ ವಿವರಗಳು ಸತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹು ಹತ್ತಿರ. ಇದೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಲವು ಅನುಬಂಧಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲಂತೂ ಈ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪುಷ್ಟಿ ದಕ್ಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗಷ್ಟೇ ಗೆಲ್ಲದೇ ಒಂದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ದಾಖಲೆಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಹಿರಿದಾದ ಮೈಲುಗಲ್ಲನ್ನೇ ನೆಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಭಗವತಿ, ದೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಎಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕವಾದರೂ ಸತ್ಯದ ಮತ್ತು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯತನದ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಸಂಕೇತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮಾಸ್ತಿಯವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜನ ದುರಾಡಳಿತವನ್ನು ಕಟುವಾಗಿ ವಿರೋಧಿಸದೆ ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿದ ಮಗನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಬಹುದಾದ ತಾಯಿಯ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿರುವುದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ನಿಜ ಗೆಲುವು. ಆತನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಕ್ರೂರತನದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿ ಕುಳಿತ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹೊರ ತರುವ ಲೇಖಕರು, ಓದುಗರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಕವೀರರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೊಂಚ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯು ತರುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಕಾಡುವ ಎರಡು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಂದರೆ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಬಸವಯ್ಯ (ಕುಂಟ ಬಸವ) ಮತ್ತು ರಾಣಿ ಗೌರಮ್ಮ. ಬಸವಯ್ಯ ರಾಜನ ದುರ್ವಿಲಾಸದ ವರ್ತಕನಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದರೂ ಕೊಡಗು ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರಿಂದ ಮತ್ತು ದಂಗೆಕೋರರಿಂದ ಉಳಿಸಲು ಶತಾಯಗತಾಯ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಮಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಈತನ ಸಾವು ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇನ್ನೂ ರಾಣಿ ಗೌರಮ್ಮ, ಮಾತಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾದರೂ ಪತಿಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಗೌರವ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಘೋರ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ದಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈಕೆ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ನಡೆದಿದ್ದರೆ ಬಹುಷಃ ಕೊಡಗು ಹಲಗೇರಿಯವರಲ್ಲೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಈಕೆಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಸತಿಧರ್ಮ ಒಳಿತು ಎನಿಸಿತು, ಈ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆಯೂ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ನಾನು ಓದಿರುವ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ವಸ್ತುಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಉಚ್ಚ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಿದು. Highly recommended
ಕೇವಲ 7 ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ನಡುವೆಯೇ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಭಾರಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮತ್ತೆ ಓದಲೇಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹಠ ಮಾಡಿ ಓದಿಸಿದೆ.
ವೀರವಂತ ರಾಜರ ಕಥೆ ಬರೆದು ಹುರಿದುಂಬಿಸುವದರ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಸೋತ ದುರಂತ ರಾಜರ ಸೋಲಿನ ಕಥೆಯಿಂದ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ಕೊಡುವುದು ತುಂಬಾ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಇದು ಅಂತದ್ದೇ ಸೋತ ರಾಜನ ಕಥೆ, ತನ್ನದೇ ಕಥೆಗೆ ನಾಯಕನು ಖಳನಾಯಕನೂ ಆದ ಚಿಕವೀರರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನ ಕಥೆ.

ಮಾಸ್ತಿಯವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜನ ದುರಾಡಳಿತವನ್ನು ಕಟುವಾಗಿ ವಿರೋಧಿಸದೆ ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿದ ಮಗನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಬಹುದಾದ ತಾಯಿಯ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿರುವುದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ನಿಜ ಗೆಲುವು. ಆತನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಕ್ರೂರತನದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿ ಕುಳಿತ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹೊರ ತರುವ ಲೇಖಕರು, ಓದುಗರಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಕವೀರರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೊಂಚ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯು ತರುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಕಾಡುವ ಎರಡು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಂದರೆ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಬಸವಯ್ಯ (ಕುಂಟ ಬಸವ) ಮತ್ತು ರಾಣಿ ಗೌರಮ್ಮ. ಬಸವಯ್ಯ ರಾಜನ ದುರ್ವಿಲಾಸದ ವರ್ತಕನಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದರೂ ಕೊಡಗು ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರಿಂದ ಮತ್ತು ದಂಗೆಕೋರರಿಂದ ಉಳಿಸಲು ಶತಾಯಗತಾಯ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಮಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಈತನ ಸಾವು ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇನ್ನೂ ರಾಣಿ ಗೌರಮ್ಮ, ಮಾತಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾದರೂ ಪತಿಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಗೌರವ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಘೋರ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ದಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈಕೆ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ನಡೆದಿದ್ದರೆ ಬಹುಷಃ ಕೊಡಗು ಹಲಗೇರಿಯವರಲ್ಲೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಈಕೆಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಸತಿಧರ್ಮ ಒಳಿತು ಎನಿಸಿತು, ಈ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆಯೂ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

எப்படிப்பட்ட பேரிலக்கியம். இப்படைப்பை கூட மறுபதிப்பு செய்யாமல் கிடப்பில் போட்டிருப்பது இழிவினும் இழிவு. இலக்கியம் என்றால் என்னவென்றே தெரியாத தற்குறிகள் தான் நேசனல் புக் டிரஸ்டில் பணியாற்றுகிறார்கள் போல.
அரசன் என்று எண்ணிய உடனேயே நமக்கு மனதில் ஒரு பொன்னோவியமான காட்சி விரியுமே, அந்த மனக் காட்சியை எல்லாம் மாஸ்தி வெங்கடேச அய்யங்கார் தனது இடக்காலால் எட்டி ஒரு மிதி மிதித்திருக்கிறார்.
ஒரு வரலாற்று நாவல் எப்படி எழுதப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதற்கு சிக்கவீர ராஜேந்திரன் ஒரு அருமையான எடுத்துக்காட்டு.
சிறு அகவையிலேயே நாய்கள், குதிரைகள் போன்ற விலங்குகள் கலவி கொள்வதை கண்கொட்டாமல் பார்த்து ரசிக்கும் ஒருவன், பிற்காலத்தில் அரசனானால் என்னவெல்லாம் செய்வானோ அவை எல்லாவற்றையும் பிசிரில்லாமல் செய்து முடிக்கிறான் சிக்கவீர ராஜேந்திரன்.
இதற்குமேல் இவனால் தரம்தாழவே முடியாது என்று நாம் நினைக்கும் போதெல்லாம், "ஏமாந்தீர்களா?" என்று மேலும் மேலும் தரங்கெட்டு கீழ்மையில் திளைக்கிறான்.
ஆனால் அப்படிப்பட்ட சிக்கவீர ராஜேந்திரனிடம் கூட சில வேளைகளில் அரிதிலும் அரிதாக வெளிப்படும் நெகிழ்வானது நம்மை மலைக்கச் செய்கிறது.
தனது மனைவி, மகள், மந்திரிகள் என்று பலர் அவனை சீர்படுத்திக் காப்பாற்ற முயற்சி செய்ய, "நானா? திருந்துவதா? NEVER" என்று தன் தலையில் தானே மண்ணை வாரி போட்டுக்கொண்டு அழிகிறான். இப்படியாக குடகு நாடு வெள்ளையர்களின் கைக்கு போய் சேர்கிறது.
இந்நாவலின் முடிவுரையில் தரப்படும் தகவல்கள், இப்படைப்பை முற்றிலும் வேறுவொரு தளத்திற்கு கொண்டு சென்றுவிடுகிறது. புத்தகத்தின் இறுதி பக்கத்தில் வரும் கடிதத்தின் வரிகளை படிக்கும் போது மெய்சிலிர்த்துவிட்டது.

It fully justifies its Jnanpith Award, offering a searing portrayal of a ruler unraveling. Chikkaveera Rajendra, the last king of Kodagu, is shown as a man consumed by paranoia and pride, unwilling to heed the advice of his ministers, advisors, or even family. His stubbornness ultimately leads to disaster, paving the way for British annexation. Strikingly, the people of Kodagu though no fans of British rule accepted this change, so broken were they by the king’s tyranny. The novel’s ending is haunting, and left me deeply moved.

எந்த ஒரு புத்தகமும் திரைப்படமும் ஒரு புள்ளியிலிருந்து தான் துவங்கப் பட்டு எழுதப் பட்டிருக்கும். அந்த விஷயத்தில் நான் அடிக்கடி சொல்லும் உதாரணம் ஜெமினி படக்கதை துவங்கிய புள்ளி. ஜெயிலுக்கு சென்று திருந்திய இரவுடி ஒருவர் மாலைக் கல்லூரியில் படித்து பட்டம் வாங்கியதை தினசரியில் படித்து எழுதப்பட்டதுதான் ஜெமினி படத்தின் கதை.
அதே போல் புத்தகங்களில் வெட்டுப்புலி. ஒரு தீப்பெட்டியில் புலியை வெட்டும் மனிதரின் படத்தைக் காட்டி இவர் என் தாத்தாதான் என நண்பர் சொல்லப் போக அதை நோக்கிய காலப்பயணமாக அந்த புத்தகம் அமைந்திருக்கும். மேலும் திராவிட அரசியலின் வரலாறை நூல் பிடித்தார் போல் பெரியாரில் துவங்கி வைகோ வரை சொல்லியிருப்பார் எழுத்தாளார்.
ஒரு புத்தகத்தை படித்து முடித்ததும் இவர் எப்படி இந்தக் கதையை ஆரம்பித்திருப்பார்? இப்படி எழுதும் படி எதனால் தோன்றி இருக்கும்? என்று அதன் காரணிகளைப் பற்றி யோசிப்பது எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த ஒன்று. அந்த வரிசையில் வா.மணிகண்டன் அண்ணன் மூலம் எனக்கு சிக்க வீர ராஜேந்திரன் நூலைப் பற்றி அறிமுகம் கிடைத்தது.
முதலில் ஆச்சர்யப்படுத்திய விஷயம் புத்தகத்தின் விலைதான். 508 பக்கங்களைக் கொண்ட நூலின் விலை வெறும் 32 ரூபாய் தான். உடனே ஆர்டர் செய்து வாங்கினேன். அந்தப் புத்தகத்தைப் பற்றி அண்ணன் எழுதிய விமர்சனம் மிக அருமையானது. முக்கியமானது. வாசிக்கத் துவங்குவதற்கு முன்பு அதைக் கட்டாயம் ஒரு முறை படிப்பது சுவாரசியத்தைக் கூட்டும். கொஞ்சம் அடிப்படை வரலாற்று அறிவை சொல்லித் தரும். வாசித்த பின் மீண்டும் அவர் விமர்சனத்தைப் படிக்கையில் தான் அவர் தந்திருக்கும் புகைப்படங்களின் அருமை புரியும்.
தீப்பெட்டியில் சிறுத்தையை வெட்டுபவர் என் தாத்தா என சொன்னதில் ஒரு புத்தகம் உருவானதைப் போல, இப்புத்தகத்திற்கும் ஒரு கதை உண்டு. 1938-39 விடுமுறை நாட்களில் குடகு பக்கம் சுற்றும் நண்பர்களில் ஒருவர் இங்கு குடகு இராஜாவைப் பற்றிய நாடகங்கள் சொல்லும் கதையைக் கேட்டால் ஒரு புத்தகமாக எழுதும் அளவிற்கான விஷயங்கள் அடங்கியிருக்கின்றன. எனவே நீ எழுத வேண்டும் என தனது எழுத்தாளராக இருக்கும் நண்பரிடம் சொல்கிறார். அவரும் சரி பார்க்கலாம் என சொல்லி விட்டு விட்டு விடுகிறார்.
சிறிது நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு வட்டமேஜை மாநாட்டிற்கு இங்கிலாந்திற்கு செல்லும் அந்த நண்பர் அங்கு தேனீர் இடைவேளையில் உடன் இருப்பவரிடம் இந்த குடகு கதையைப் பற்றி பேசிக் கொண்டிருப்பதை கவனித்து விட்டு ஒரு வெள்ளைக்கார பெண்மணி அவர்களிடம் வந்து, நீங்கள் சொல்லும் ஊருக்கும் எனக்கும் தொடர்பு இருக்கிறது என சொல்ல "உங்களுக்கு அங்கு ஏதும் எஸ்டேட் சொந்தமாக உள்ளதா?" என இவர் கேட்க "ஒருவகையில் அந்த நாடே எனக்கு சொந்தமாக வேண்டியது, அந்த அரச வம்சத்தின் கடைசி வாரிசு நான் தான்" என தன்னை அறிமுகப் படுத்திக் கொள்கிறார். அவருடன் சென்று உரையாடி, கதை மாந்தர்களின் படங்களை பார்த்து விவரங்களை சேகரித்து, இங்கு குடகுவில் ஒவ்வொரு அரண்மனையாக பார்த்து, கம்பெனி அரசாங்கம் எழுதிய கடிதங்களை ஆராய்ந்து எழுதப்பட்ட குடகின் வரலாறுதான் இந்தப் புத்தகம்.
சிக்க வீர ராஜேந்திரன், இந்தப் பெயர் நமது பாடப் புத்தகங்களில் இருக்கிறது. எங்கு தெரியுமா? இராணி மங்கம்மாளின் ஆட்சியை விவரிக்கையில் அவர் நடத்திய போர்களைப் பற்றி சொல்லும் பகுதியில் இருக்கிறது. இருவரும் போர் செய்துக் கொள்ளவில்லை. அதற்கான முகாந்திரம் மிக முக்கியமானது. காவேரியின் குறுக்கே அணை கட்டி தமிழகத்திற்கு தண்ணீர் தர மறுத்த சிக்க வீர இராஜேந்திரனுக்கு எதிராக இராணி மங்கம்மாள் படை திரட்ட, கடுமையான மழையின் காரணமாக வெள்ளத்தில் அணை உடைந்து விடுவதால் போருக்கு வேலையில்லாமல் வெற்றியடைகிறார் இராணி. இவ்வளவுதான் அதிலிருக்கும் வரலாறு.
தமிழகத்தை பல பகுதிகளாகப் பிரித்து பல குறு நில மன்னர்கள் ஆட்சி செய்து வந்தது போல் கர்நாடகமும் சமஸ்தானங்களாக பிரிவுற்றுக் கிடந்தன. அதில் மைசூர் சமஸ்தானம் தான் தென்னிந்தியாவின் இறுதியான வலிமையான சமஸ்தானம். அதன் அருகில் இருந்த ஒரு சிறிய சமஸ்தானம் தான் குடகு. உண்மையில் "குடகு மலை காற்றில் வரும் பாட்டுக் கேட்குதா" என்ற பாட்டிலும் காவேரி தோன்றும் மலை குடகுமலை என்று பொது அறிவு வினாவிலும் மட்டுமே எனக்கு இந்த மலை அறிமுகம். அது ஒரு நாடாக இருந்தது என்பதே புதிய விஷயம்தான். அதனுடைய வரலாறுதான் இந்தப் புத்தகம்.
பின் அட்டையில் தெளிவாகப் போட்டிருப்பார்கள். கிழக்கிந்திய கம்பெனிக் காரர்கள் ஒரே நாள் இரவில் இந்தியாவை வளைத்து விடவில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு சமஸ்தானமாக வளைக்க அவர்கள் பெரும் பிரயத்தனப் பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். எதிர்ப்பவர்களை சண்டையிட்டு வீழ்த்துவது எளிது. அனுசரித்து போகும் இராஜ்ஜியங்களை எப்படி அடைவது? ஆனால் அடைந்தால் தான் அதன் வளங்களைக் கொள்ளையடிக்க முடியும். ஒரு சமஸ்தானத்தை ஆட்கொள்ள முடிவெடுத்து விட்டால் காரணத்துக்காக காத்திருப்பார்கள். சரியான காரணம் வந்ததும் மெதுவாக பேச்சுவார்த்தை நடக்கும். அந்த சமயங்களிலெல்லாம் மிகவும் ஞாயமாக நடந்துக் கொள்வார்கள். சரியான தருணம் வந்ததும் படையுடன் இறங்குவார்கள். அதுவும் மக்கள் எதிர்க்காத படி, அவர்கள் நலனுக்காக செய்வது போல்தான் நடக்கும். திப்புவைக் கொன்று, கிருஷ்ண உடையாரை அரசராக்கி, 10 வருடங்களுக்குப் பின் மீண்டும் கம்பெனி அதிகாரத்திற்கு கீழ் அதைக் கொண்டு வந்ததைப் போல.
சுதந்திரத்திற்கு முன்பு எழுதப்பட்ட புத்தகம். மேலும் கன்னட நாட்டின் வரலாற்றின் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு. முற்றிலும் புதுமையாக இருக்கும். ஏனெனில் சினிமாவின் மூலமாக ஆந்திரமும் கேரளமும் தமிழகத்திற்கு அறிமுகமானது போல் கர்னாடகம் அறிமுகமாகவில்லை. ஒரே வழி, பெங்களூருக்கு வேலைக்கு சென்ற நபர்கள் வழி தெரிந்துக் கொண்டதுதான். அதனால் அன்னியமாக தெரியும் கதை நடையின் போக்கிற்கு போக 50 பக்கங்களையாவது கடக்க வேண்டி இருக்கிறது.
250 பக்கங்களை கடந்த பின் கதை நம்மை பிடித்துக் கொள்கிறது. யார்யார் யாருக்கு எதிரி, நண்பன் என்பதெல்லாம் தெளிவாக விளங்கிய பின் அடுத்து ஆட்சி யாருக்கு போகும் என நாமும் பதற வேண்டி இருக்கிறது.

I have mixed feelings about this book but still a great read to learn about the history of Kodagu, the augmented version was really helpful in providing Historical facts and rarest photos and documents.

What would you do if you were ruled by a ruthless, unjust, unreasonable and alcoholic king and an external body promises you to dethrone him and let you live happily without any interference? You don't completely trust the outsiders but you also are aware of the fact that any local uprising would definitely be a call to their death by the King's soldiers. You see no other option and are compelled to take the external help in the hope that your life gets better. How would you also feel that your king were dethroned, but the outsiders were actually a bunch of vile and greedy invaders who never had any intentions of fulfilling their promises to you and wanted to force their faith on you? Your life again continues with the same (or probably more) misery.
This is probably what happened to most of the states in India when the British East India Company came to India as a bunch of innocent traders, sweet-talked the innocent people of this country into believing that they have come as Messiahs to rescue them from their rulers and ended up successfully annexing the entire country.
This story was originally written in Kannada by an award winning author (Masti Venktesa Iyengar) which was later translated into English. The author has researched extensively (himself being born during the British reign) of the happenings in Kodagu (a district in Karnataka) when the East India Company took over the rule of Mysore and was eyeing for an opportunity to take over Kodagu as well. They did not have to wait long as they began receiving complaints from the inhabitants of Kodagu against their King who has been involved in everything but the state affairs. He is supported by an equally vile minister with whose support he commits atrocities against anyone who questions the King. He imprisons his sister, kills her month-old son in a fit of rage among many other heinous crimes and the people of Kodagu had had enough of him. Knowing not where to go, the innocent people approach the East India Company for help. The EIC not believing its luck, begins to behave extremely politely with the people and manages to convince them that it has their best interests in its heart. With the help of EIC they manage to usurp the King but while deciding whom to anoint in his place, the EIC declares that it is going to govern the place until the King's daughter comes of age. By that time, they train and convert the poor girl into Christianity and send her to England where she is married off to a Captain. All of these happen out of her wishes when she has a local boy Utti in her heart. She dies in England without seeing her Kodagu people or her Utti. The Kodagu people begin facing new problems with the EIC as they start showing their true colours.
This entire story is heart wrenching for a few reasons -
1. The situation of the people of Kodagu probably represents what really must have happened in several princely states of India. It feels like the people stood at an impasse with dangers on both sides, knowing not where to go. The dangers being the King on one side and the British on the other. Either case they have lead a very sad life (barring a few exceptions of course).
2. The people of India in general in those days were pretty naive and innocent. The East India Company was able to manoeuvre them to their side without much efforts. Just a bit of sweet talking and false promises were enough. The way they try to convert Indians to Christianity will boil the blood of anyone reading this book. Nobody can force anyone to follow their faith. I can’t believe all that our forefathers had to go through and so proud that the worlds oldest religion still thrives despite so much hate and forceful conversions from the Abrahamic faiths (no offence).
All in all, this is one of the best books I have read in recent times. A very well written and unputdownable book.

2. The people of India in general in those days were pretty naive and innocent. The East India Company was able to manoeuvre them to their side without much efforts. Just a bit of sweet talking and false promises were enough. The way they try to convert Indians to Christianity will boil the blood of anyone reading this book. Nobody can force anyone to follow their faith. I can’t believe all that our forefathers had to go through and so proud that the worlds oldest religion still thrives despite so much hate and forceful conversions from the Abrahamic faiths (no offence).
All in all, this is one of the best books I have read in recent times. A very well written and unputdownable book.
A very kind lady downstairs lent me this beautiful book which from many comments I felt is quite an antique book and difficult to find. After reading the book, I learnt this book won the Jyanapeetha Award which I feel it totally deserved.

ಆಳುವ ಅರಸರು ಕ್ರಮ ತಪ್ಪಿದರೆ ದೇಶವು ಮೊದಲು ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೂ ಕಾಲಾಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಸಣ್ಣಗೆ ಹೊತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡ ಕಿಡಿಯೊಂದು ಹೇಗೆ ಬಲಿತು ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಆಹುತಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಚಿಕವೀರನ ಜೀವನ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಭಾರತದ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಎಲ್ಲ ರಾಜರು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಡಿ ಸೋತರೆ, ಈ ಅರಸ ತನ್ನ ವಿಷಯ ದೌರ್ಬಲ್ಯದಿಂದ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ರಾಜನ ಲಂಪಟತನ, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷರ ಕುಟಿಲತೆಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಕೊಡಗನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ರಾಣಿಯ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳು ವಿಫಲವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ರಾಣಿಯ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವಿಷಾದವನ್ನು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅಂಶವೆಂದರೆ ನೊಂದ ಮನಸ್ಸುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ತಮ್ಮ ಮತ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಸಹ್ಯ ಉಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

A marvellous account of life and time of ruler of Kurg, Vir Rajednra by Masti Venkatesha Iyengar. The book is redolent with the culture and ethos of its milieu, being Kodagu in the mid-19th century. A must read for those who wish to know as to how Britishers userped princely states and how princes and lords behaved those days.

Masti's Chikaveera Rajendra is a very interesting book to read for it is a unique take on the life of a King in India during 19th Century.
There is a clear difference between historical fiction written in English and in Kannada, especially the tone and the handling of the subject. This novel explores the life of Kodagu kingdom's last King and the members of his palace. A very interesting part of the book is the King's relationship with the merchants and his ministers as Masti explores how truly interdependent they are. There is also the English and their interactions with Indian rulers which required particular mention.
Truly enjoyed reading this book. Recommended to all Kannada Readers.

Amazing novel, my first big kannada novel back in 1992.The writing style is splendid. Got to know about how christian missionaries worked for the first time.My high school textbook hitory became boing after reading this.

One of the classics. ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಯವರ ಬರಹ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಆ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹಳ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.

I read the original Kannada book which won the Jnanapith award. A good book on the final days of Kodagu’s last king Chikaveera Rajendra. Lot of family drama, with the king acting like a milder version of Jeoffrey in Game of Thrones. Also shows how the British subtly act to get native kingdoms under their rule while also trying to propagate Christianity whenever possible. A very informative and entertaining read.

ಕಥೆ ಪುರಾಣವು ಇಷ್ಟು ಮಾತ್ರವೇ, ಇದನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಮಾಸ್ತಿಯವರು ಸುಮಾರು ೪೫೦ ಪುಟಗಳಷ್ಟು ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕಥಾಮುಖ, ಪೂರ್ವಕಥೆ, ಕಥಾಗರ್ಭ, ಕಥಾಪೂರಣ, ಕಥಾಶೇಷ, ಸಮಾರೋಪಕ ಹೀಗೆ ೬ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯಗಳಾಗಿ ವಿಂಗಡಿಸಿ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸಮಯ ಸಿಕ್ಕಾಗ ತಪ್ಪದೇ ಓದಿ.

I started reading this book as Masti Venkatesha Iyyangar won Jnanapeetha award for this. It was hard to get this but somehow found in Sapna book house in Bengaluru. I started reading this book a year ago- I went very slow as beginning was not so interesting. But as the story progressed it became very interesting. I wonder how Masti was able collect all these historical events of Kodagu and such an amazing effort from him. Names of people of that time , life events around them. Their life styles, etc. How Chikka Veera Rajendra ruled, his downfall, how British politely approached to encroach Coorg under their rule. Interesting book. If you are Kannadiga you must show some interest to read such books at least try reading all Jnanapeetha award winning books ! ‘Masti Kannadada Asti’ for true.

Thanks to Kannada friends who keep on introducing amazing books to me. I read this book in Hindi and I enjoyed reading it. Its a historic novel on last ruler of Kodag Kingdom Chikaveera Rajendra. This book gave me lots of emotions. I hope someone translate Chennabasavanayaka book as well.

ಕೊಡಗು ಎಂದಾಗ ವೀರರು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬಳಸುವ ಪದ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಕೊನೆಯ ಅರಸನ ಕತೆ ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಸಂಶಯಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಯವರ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬರಹ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮತೆಯ ಹುಡುಕಾಟಗಳು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗೆ ಮೆರಗು ತಂದಿದೆ.

1. An exceptional historical novel. Easily among the Top 25 books I've read in my life. If one were to make a list of the 100 Greatest Historical Fiction Novels in the world, ಚಿಕವೀರ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ would make that list with ease.
2. Immersive worldbuilding. It feels like I just came back to present day Mysuru from the mid 19th century Madikeri.
3. It's a difficult task to keep the reader hooked from start to finish when the central character has no redeemable qualities & hence the reader has no one to root for. (Contrast this with ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ where there is Madakari Nayaka to root for & a great antagonist in Hyder Ali to play off of him)
4. ಕನ್ನಡ ಬಲ್ಲವರು ಓದಲೇ ಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. It's a must-read book also for every aspiring writer/screenwriter for the way Masti handles so many characters. The dialogues are sharp & to the point.
