I'm 41 chapters in and he still hasn't told me how to write faster. He just keeps rambling about his pretty island, the $75k he makes per project, and what an inept writer he is. :-\

Hard to Separate the Wheat from the Chaff

I have read some of the author's other books and taken some of his courses. But I hadn't read this particular book. I always check out the book description at Amazon before I start reading before a review so I know what I'm getting myself in for. I found the book description to be a bit rambling, and there was even a phrase about diet and weight loss that didn't seem appropriate for a description of a book about writing. Big, bold words at the top of the blurb suggested that this is a shortened and edited version of the original text. I must say, if that is so, I shudder to think what the original was like. I still find the book to be repetitious, the writing itself to be somewhat scattered, and the organization to be nebulous, making it hard to follow at times. I found myself getting frustrated in the early portions because it took more than 10% of the book to get to anything of actual substance about writing, instead of just generalities about him, his approach, and his life (both personal and professional).

The book definitely needs a better organizational structure. There's no formal chapter or section structure under which topics could be organized. The table of contents is just a list of topics. There's no cohesion here. He jumps around on different topics like (work habits (e.g., setting goals), using voice recognition software, the self-editing process, and working with others on your book. Most of what is written could definitely be even more condensed and distilled, and similar topics should be grouped together under a chapter or section that makes sense for the group. The titles of the topics weren't always particularly helpful about truly telling what that topic was actually about.

There are definitely some nuggets of useful information here that will help the beginning or early writer. But it still feels like a hard slog to get to those nuggets. I felt like some information was wrong in this book. I am a writer myself as well as a professional editor. His distinctions between different types of editing are not the same as my interpretations of them; some of what he stated about the different levels of professional editing belonged in other categories. Also, I find it hard to believe that he would expect a nonfiction copyeditor to double-check his research for him, going so far as looking up newer studies to determine whether or not the author’s words were now proven wrong. I don't do that, and I would have to charge thousands to offer such a service (if I even wanted to). And I find it really hard to believe that one of his editors actually completed one of his books with a 48-hour turnaround. Depending upon which of my services are used and the length of the book, the time I need to work on a book varies anywhere from weeks to months to do as good of a job as I want to always do; for me, I do at least 3 different passes for copyediting, and they can’t be rushed. An editor would undoubtedly have to cut corners to do such a fast turnaround.

As I said earlier, some wisdom exists in these pages; however, separating the wheat from the chaff takes some work. If you are a beginning writer and take his opinions with a grain of salt, you still may find enough to make reading this book worthwhile. But don't be surprised if what he represents in this book is different from what you experience when you work with the recommended software or with others on your writing, whether they’re editors, beta readers, or reviewers.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This book could have been a quarter of the length and made a bigger impact. The author shares all of his thoughts...over and over. In there are nuggets and great tips to increase writing productivity. Although too wordy.

Very thorough and detailed instruction, especially on the benefits of dictation. Some of the text does repeat but overall a very good book!

Now that I have gone through the whole book once, I am going to go back through and really pull out his techniques and drills that he has advised.

Jonathan really gives you some good insight and gives you a lot to consider and ways to incorporate them into our own lives.

(Review written from a phone. Typos may abound.)

Hm. I, too, can write 20k a day when all I am doing is rambling and repeating the same thing a thousand times.

Less than 10% of this book was actually useful common-sense advice in actionable lists.

35 to 40% of this book was excluaively the author going "I write over 20k a day. Not many people can. I do. I get paid lots to do it. I make a lot of money ghostwriting. I live on an island and get paid a lot. I'm looking out at the ocean, from my house in an island. Because I get paid a lot. Also I record several podcasts a day and have jobs waiting for me all the time, I make a lot of money off those jobs. In my island. Where I write fast and make money. And I'm dictating this book. From my dock. In my island. Did I mention I make a lot of money ghostwriting?", And then some more was peppered through so I lost count. That was just how far I got with my kindle tracking it before it stopped being full chapters about his awesome life and began inserting that into what should have been useful advice.

The rest of the book was him rambling in between what should have been the meat of the "20k system" and repeating himself over and over.
Give it a hard pass. It's basically "research first, outline, create a writing habit and remove distractions."

This book badly needs an editor.
I read a lot of books which is something I share with the author of this book but unlike him, I don't tell the readers of my books this fact 10-15 times in each of my books. Unlike him, I don't live on a tropical island, but I do live close to water, again I don't share that with my readers, over and over and over and over and over again.
This book gets three stars because there are a few nuggets that I found valuable and will be able to implement. Nevertheless, it is rather insufferable to see the tropical island fact, his claim of an amazing income, his claim of not being a great writer, his claim of reading a book a day, his enjoyment of water sports and several other things repeated ad nauseum.
When he got to the part about editing your books, I was seriously putting into question whether he was taking his own advice. The book is at least 20K words too long and a line-editor would easily have helped cure the book of its many ailments and repetitive stories.
The author doesn't hide that he dictated the book through Dragon dictation which is the suggested way to reach the target of 20,000 words per day but if this book is evidence of the outcome, then you should run away screaming.
Dear author if you read this review fix this book asap by getting it edited in a proper fashion.

This book is overflowing with lots of excellent writing advice, even beyond the 20K promise. I really wanted to give this book 5 stars just based on the information the author shares, but I couldn't because this book could have easily been a third shorter than it was if it weren't so repetitive (especially in the first third of the book). There are also (gasp!) numerous typos throughout. With that said, I would absolutely recommend this book. Just power through the start, because it truly holds fabulous gems of information sure to help you become a more productive writer.

I am always looking for ways to improve my writing and workflow, and this was a good find. I enjoy Jonathan Green's approach to writing - he is someone who has had to work hard for his success, and tries very hard to share the information he presents in such a way that it is entirely actionable.
He writes 20K words a day, and shares his system(s) so others can do the same.
One common theme is his awareness that people are not cookie cutter robots - different techniques will work to different levels of effectiveness for different people.
He discusses different ways to organize the writing process, the importance of developing unique rituals, several options for outlining and mind-mapping, multiple techniques for making writing efficient and comfortable, and the thought processes behind each so the unique writer can pick and choose the best routes for him or her to use.
The book read a little different from other things of his I've read, and I realized it was because his writing illustrated the various techniques and options he was discussing. I thought that was pretty cool.
He is very successful at what he does, and is not stingy or pompous in his advice. Rather than being intimidated, I felt like I had gone through a useful class I actually enjoyed.
This was a supportive and completely practical, doable work. It was well worth the time it took reading.

I've read a number of books about both writing fast and forming habits.

Certain ideas tend to pop up over and over again. For good reason - these are the things that work for many people! I find it's actually helpful to see these things more than once.

Jonathan's book doesn't contain much, if anything, that I haven't seen before, but it's well-written, well-edited, and easy to read. I unfortunately haven't been in a position yet to be able to do the exercises, but I do believe that someone who does should see an increase in their writing speed, even if they never approach the titular 20,000 words per day. I know from my own experience that the things the author calls out as slowing you down are correct.

He does tend to repeat himself a bit (and talks too much about his island lifestyle) but it's a pretty easy read.

Do I write anywhere close to the author's claimed speed? Not a chance. That said, I still recommend this book.

20K A DAY teaches readers how to write better books faster. I've written several novels, and this is the first time I've heard of this system. I wish I'd heard it sooner! I spent hours at the computer when I wrote my novels. If I had known about Jonathan Green's method, I could have cut my time down to less than half.

In a world where unproductive time means no profit, the 20K system is essential. One of his suggestions is to dictate your book. I did this once with a simple recorder. When I typed my manuscript, I needed to stop the recording after every other sentence. Even though it was faster, it still took a while to write the novel. Mr. Green suggests dictation software which is so much easier to use.

I haven't written a novel in years because the process is so long. I really don't have that much time to dedicate to a novel. With the 20K system, writing is so much easier and so much faster! I can't wait to start writing again!

Mr. Green is an exert at explaining his system. His book is also full of useful tools to use. He shows tools that make writing so much easier.

I wish I'd read this book before I began my journey as an author.

My favorite of the series

This book is one of my favorite of the series so far. There are a ton of practical exercises and techniques that I was immediately able to put into place. While this book is a little older. I was able to combine the techniques that I learned from Jonathan’s ChatGPT book to be able to increase my speed to 20k per day within a few weeks. This has made a dramatic change to my productivity. My biggest takeaway from the book is to track my productivity in a journal. Well done Jonathan.

Interesting read with lots of useful tips for writing and publishing. Although I found some part such as areas on blocks of writing and the zone repetitive at times I understand this may have been to emphasise there importance. Green I 100% right on loops as despite this part of negative feedback I continued to read to find out more. I may be slightly sceptical of the concept of writing 20k a day but for me it'll be a work in progress.

This book contains many useful tips on how to write faster. Even though it is repetitious in some places, this is a very good book. I especially liked the chapters on how to edit your work.  Writing faster means more editing, and Jonathan offered practical suggestions on how to do it effectively. I highly recommend this book to any writer who wants to be more productive.

I finished this book in a day. Shows how much “creativity” and time went into it. The author really takes his time to get into the writing and making money part. He mostly spends his time rambling about his 70,000$ projects and how he’s writing this on an island. The book is extremely repetitive that I had to skip a few chapters, the writing style isn’t that nice at all too. Too direct and too slow. He says something and he says it again in a different way. Overall, 2.5/5

Nononsense book about the tricks, because that's what they are, the himself uses to rapidly create vast volumes of text. But in fact, this book could've been two thirds smaller if all the repetitions were left out. Still, some interesting nuggets to be found here they're just a bit too hidden in the abundance of words.

Good exercises to write faster. Slightly out of date with dragonspeak, haven’t checked out his cheatsheets, but definitely can utilize the concise clear directions. Already ordered/kindled other titles.

This book was mainly about editing, but there were a few good ideas in there. The stuff on sprinting was helpful, and the style was entertaining. Most of the info about fast writing is in the first quarter of the book.

This book suggest that you can become a prolific writer by speaking your books. That it is a concept I hadn't explored. I feel like I think better while writing, but i may be wrong.
