Omega Force #9

Revolution

Rate this book
For thousands of years the ConFed has been the most powerful force in the quadrant. It is the umbrella under which hundreds of planets and trillions of beings live in relative peace ... despite the corruption and waste, it's a system that most accept as preferable to the chaos that would ensue in its absence.

Rumors have swirled around about the demise of the ConFed for as long as Jason Burke had been in space, a lone human among countless alien species. He largely ignored them ... until now. For the first time since any of the members of Omega Force can remember, someone may have figured out how to destroy the ConFed without directly engaging its powerful military.

As one crewmember's past seems connected to the current trouble, Jason must decide what side of the fight he's on ... let the ConFed die and plunge the quadrant into chaos, or swallow his pride and try to help an institution he despises maintain its power for the greater good.

I just can’t get enough of these books. They are super good, just the kind I like to read after reading some near science fiction horror stories. These books are just fun. I can almost relate to Jason Burke and would give anything to have half an exciting experience he’s having. I know that none of this stuff is based on our reality, but if it were and I were much younger, I be calling Captain Burke for a job. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d qualify for his team. I’m not that fond of getting smacked around, shot or thrown all over the place. And Crusher would definitely scare the you know what out of me.

Anyway, Jason and the Omega Force needed to get back to work. They don’t exactly have a contract with anyone, but Lucky has been notified that his kind, battlesynths, were getting recalled back to their planet of origin, Khepri. Lucky is not directly effected since his “Master” changed some of his internal circuits prior to him becoming a full battlesynth. But Lucky felt that something big was about to happen and he wanted to go find out what it might be before it actually did. Jason wasn’t opposed to going and after being contacted by Satiava Mok about his belief was that something big was about to happen, Jason and the Omega Force were off on another mission.

So, now we find out a lot about Lucky’s early life. He’s over 250 years old and was created to be something other than a battlesynth, but circumstances forced his Master to put him in a battlesynth body and that where he has been all these years. He believe he knows of 37 other battle synths like him who have free will and do not have to follow the orders of anyone if they chose not to. Only they are hidden somewhere on Khepri. Maybe Jason and his crew can find them if they aren’t already involved in whatever is going to happen.

We also find out that the ConFed has a problem with it’s banking system. Every financial transaction that happens in the ConFed empire goes through a central AI located on Khepri. It is very, very old and should have been replaced ages ago, but for some reason was not. Now, it seems to be acting beyond it’s original programming and doing unexplainable things. So, what’s Omega Force going to do. Can they save the entire ConFed from chaos or should they even try.

He also finds out that Earth has suddenly become a potential player in the galaxy. They are showing up with some super powerful ships that shouldn’t be possible. Still, he did give Earth a laptop full of advanced technology and they appear to have put it to very good use. Earth doesn’t look like the scared little backward planet it once was. Jason has also found out that he’s no longer a bad guy as far as the Earth government is concerned. Does that make any difference in the way he’ll operate? It’ll be interesting to find out.

Oh, one more thing. One of the Omega Force gets killed on this mission. That’s all I’m going to say. It’s a good book and I’m looking forward to plenty more involving the Omega Force.

Dalzelle continues to create these impressive stories, even after 8 books, the 9th was just as good, if not better.
Something is trying to destabilise the Confed, or more importantly the Confed banking system.
Whilst Omega Force has no love for the Confed, they understand that the removal of this organisation will be disastrous, as potentially bring down the Confed and see billions or trillions of lives at risk, and dozens of worlds at risk with no support from the Confed fleet.
Jason sees no option but to try and work out what is going on. This leads to a rather interesting mission, and a series of trips all over the galaxy as they hop from place to place trying to work out what has happened.
As usual, this leads to various ‘interactions’ for the crew and as the story progresses, there is a lot of fun, antics and action as they try and try and piece together what is going on.
This is what makes these books so great. The collection of misfits in the crew are unlike anything else, but at the same time, they also remind me (and others) of a lot of the brilliant shows/books from the past and present (No I'm not going to start listing them, there are too many).
However, Dalzelle has not simply copied them, he has made this his own, with his own unique galaxy backdrop, each of his own wonderful characters, and some brilliant tech to tie it all together. There is still the fantastic humour that leaves you in tears at times (there are things that Jason says to Twingo that are hilarious that don’t just leave Crusher in stitches)
One of the things that I think made this book the standout for me personally, was the start of the book, as well as several other bits where we get to learn a lot about Lucky. In this episode, we actually learn how he was created, why he is like he is, who made him, what he is, when and where he was made, and the reasons for not just his senescence, but for his conscience as well. It made this a truly fascinating read, and Dalzelle has spent a lot of time developing this story line to make sure that it is not just exceptional, but that it honours both his readers and Lucky himself. This is what makes him such a great character writer.
There was some storyline in relation to Cage and Jason as well, as well as the Ship, which got a complete overhaul, but Lucky was the main star of this book. We also get to see a lot of other battlesynths in action this time around, which added an extra bonus to the book as well.
Overall, as I said earlier, this was a fantastic read, and Dalzelle continues to show why he is such a brilliant author and why this is such an exceptional series. If you are a fan of the series, you must read this for the Lucky info, and if you haven’t, then get the first one – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Lets be honest, if you are reading book 9 of a series you likely aren't reading reviews so I'll keep it brief.

It was good and I'm glad the author has moved away from writing Jason with the personality of an angry teenager. Overall the story was interesting and I enjoyed delving into Lucky's past. That being said, I had to doc it a star because of the ending.

Going into spoiler territory here, so feel free to stop reading now although I will try to keep it vague.
Quite frankly, the ending felt forced. It felt like the author was determined to have that moment of heroic sacrifice and forced it into the story. Even after contriving a series of unlikely events to remove most of the reasonable alternatives, it still felt like in any other book the team would have came up with a dozen different alternatives. Are you telling me that no one had something that could be rigged to explode? A grenade with a long timer? A modded plasma rifle battery pack? It frustrated me because it felt more like suicide then it did an heroic moment and the character deserved better than that.

The Walking Dead/Game of Thrones moment aside, I thought the books was interesting and well worth the read. I am interested to see where the story goes as this is clearly leading into a more epic multi-book story arch. Although admittedly I'm a little worried that he might pull something cliche like having Lucky turn evil, betray OF and break everyone's hearts only to have it come out that he is secreting being mind controlled by the evil AI.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

8/10: Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created.

Once it was gone they'd have no way to suppress incoming fire and he'd be down to a single plasma pistol, a grenade, and his underwear.

Moments of laughter and the obligatory crew bickering made this a good read.

"Boring!" Crusher said. "Screw this. Let me know when we have something interesting to do."

I do love Crusher!

The political leanings of the storyline, however, lost the book one star. It was at times a little too convoluted to be called an easy read.

But...this was the one I'd been waiting for. This was the storyline that was hinted at, even if only briefly, in the first book of the spin-off series. I knew what was going to happen and I dreaded it.

There were tears. Even if the road to them had been rocky; I did cry. Why do authors do this????

Anyhoo, I'm onto the next and rather disappointed it's the last one out at the moment. But I just have to know what happens to my favourite space crew.

It's a powerful thing to realize that there is a place where you matter and belong.

I just listened to this whole book in one go. Though I usually put my current audiobook away while not driving or working in my shop, I just couldn't stop with this one.

This is another backstory book for one of OM's crew that works its way to their present, much like Return of the Archon. It's fascinating and gripping, and the whole 9-hour book was over before I knew it.

Like the rest of the series, it keeps the themes of loyalty and friendship among the team at the forefront. This book isn't as funny as many of the other books in the series, but don't think I'm saying that as a negative. It's still Omega Force, and it's awesome. Joshua Dalzelle gives us a look at the serious side of Omega Force and what they do, and I feel he shows serious talent and some bravery in doing so.

Paul Heitsch IS the voice of Omega Force. He continues to be outstanding as he revives existing characters and introduces new ones. I cannot imagine anyone else narrating the series.

Anyone who, like me, is absolutely addicted to the Omega Force series is going to love this audiobook.

I have really enjoyed the entire series. The characters, though unbelievable, are believable- huh!? Let me try again. All of the characters are what you could reasonably expect from their species as Josh describes them. They don't have over the top super powers that are completely ridiculous, or insights that are picked right out of the blue. These are "people" doing the best they can with limited information, unlimited confidence and unwavering faith in each other. Even their enemies respect them enough to pay very close attention to their whereabouts.

This book tells a good story about basically good people trying to do a good thing for one of their own, you won't want to put it down.

Like all the books in the series it is well written and well edited. If you are considering trying this series - start at the beginning - you will be glad you did.

Before you start this book, please note it is the ninth book of a series: you will need to have read the previous books in order so you can have the backstory on the characters, events, and the start of this installment.

Fans of this series will probably enjoy this one. Without having a spoiler, Jason has been out in the universe for quite some time now and it is getting old with him making rookie mistakes yet somehow getting out of it; there seems to be some filler material in this installment to get the page count up. The action scenes were well thought out, and the technology doesn’t go over your head. I picked this up for free via Kindle Unlimited vs. the regular price of $3.99 and certainly received more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value out of it.

An Excellent continuation in the OF series

For once we get a story on one of the more intriguing and interesting characters from OMEGA force. Lucky. We get to know his origins and then we see the group get sucked into another scheme involving Lucky and his kind. Since this is a series you will obviously read this entry if you have read the previous eight. The only reason not to would be if the quality of the story was lacking or if there were signs of things going stale. On the contrary, the story continues to grow in interesting directions. The Author has done a good job to keep things moving and the background interesting for readers.

Wonderful!

I have been a fan from the first. These books just keep being better as Dalzelle continues to work the story. This episode expands our understanding of the teams dynamic and the characters develop further. While I was quite surprised at the shocking twist, it does reveal the depth of Jason's emotional commitment to the team, and the teams commitment to each other. Omega Force is my unqualified favorite of Dalzelle's books and I absolutely can't wait until the next book!

The Omega Team have been on an extended sabbatical, as the Phoenix has under gone a major upgrade. This was a different type of adventure for the team, as they are drawn into a scheme that could change the whole universe. The story gives centre stage too Lucky, as we find out more from his past. As the team dig deeper, the team race to stop the destabilizing of the Con Fed, it will have a permanent and a devastating affect for the Omega Team. The humour is still strong between the characters and this in another good book in the series.

Excellent, As Expected

After waiting a long time for this book, I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading it, unable - and unwilling - to put it down and I'm glad I didn't.

The mysterious origins of Lucky are explained and the usual OF action and laughable moments sets the stage to have the heartstrings of all OF fans tugged hard at the end... but their story isn't finished yet and a new enemy has some bad intentions toward out grieving but intrepid heroes that should make OF 10 and even better read than this book was.

Wow! Whoever thought I'd cry near the end of this one. What a crybaby! LOL... I guess it's possible when you've read 9 books in the same series and one of the main characters is suddenly taken away.

This one was about an AI taking over the banking of many, many planets and Jason, Lucky, Crusher, Doc, Kage and Twingo have to find a way to stop it. Then mourn the lose of one of their team.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 1 time (why bother?)

As for the narration: Awesome! Paul Heitsch is perfect for this series.

Spectacular!

I was thrilled with the release of a new Omega Force book. The plot starts as a jog and ramps up quickly into a fierce race to find resources, ferret out information, while dealing with some bad guys. I think the reader gets a clearer picture of the emotions several of our OF family members have for each other.
This book is a 10 - superb, plot, great writing, and further unveiling of the OF universe that keeps the reader in suspense.

OK fortunately there is apparently a book 10 coming because, as I expected, I'm pissed that I'm at the end of the books written and that this book ended with a painful cliffhanger. The only negative is there was no romance what so ever in this book and that makes me feel sad for the lead character and I don't like feeling sad. OK with tense though and there was a lot of tension. This series has been great and I'm looking forward to book 10.

I use ratings to decide which books I am going to buy, and I recently decided I am partially responsible for inflating the ratings on books. Either they were 5 star or 1 star. I decided to use the star rating more objectively as follows:

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

Well done but a grim finish

The book starts with us learning about the “birth” of Lucky and the other battlesynths in his group. We then watch the development of a mission for Omega Force beyond the typical level of danger. The ending has several major surprises in it along with us discovering that the unknown enemy who is so focused on Jason is not only still around but is planning to make things worse.

Loved it!

This series has become one of my favorites. The author's style of character building that fleshes ( is that a word?) out the characters without pages of navel gazing is spot on. As always, there is plenty of action, and a story you care about. Can't wait for the next installment and the spin-offs.

A long wait worth waiting

I have had very few book series making me love the characters as much as I love this crew. I don't want the series to slow down, and won't spoil a single thing, but can only hope that I will be able to read more adventures of the crew for a long time to come. Thanks Mr Dalzelle.

An excellent addition to an already great series.

This series so far has been the most fun I've had in sci fi in years. Just deep enough to keep you satisfied, the right amount of drama and action. And enough humor to keep everything fresh and fun. Looking forward to seeing all of this team again, and again.

Ok Read That Just Speeds Along - Harmless and Lighthearted

As with the preceding series books, “Omega Force: Revolution (OF9),” is a harmless, quick reading, lighthearted enterprise. It’s getting a little long in the tooth by now. Maybe time to branch out or gracefully end the series Mr. Dalzelle?

“Omega Force.....9,” is recommended and was fully read via Kindle Unlimited.

Great reading!

These series kerp getting better and better. Hope that as the author stated at the en of this book, he will continue with them. It will be sad to let them go. I really, really recommend to start these books if you have not done so already. By the way Josh...please make the humans look a bit better than we are in the new books... Pretty please?

Another good one!

Nine books into this series and it's still going strong. Things are even more interesting than before with Earth now having its own starships based on the technology that Jason provided. There are a number of new developments in this story and we may get to see exactly how tough a battlesynth really is in the next book.

Great character dynamics

This series has such a great set of characters that work so well together. The interactions are funny and well thought out. Anything more would say would be a spoiler. Just make sure to start at the beginning and read the whole series. You will truly enjoy all the stories.

I started with the first book and just binge read until this one. I was surprisingly attached to
Lucky. I'll start the next one monday or so but I wanted to stop and relive this series a bit.
I'm NOT an afficionado of sci fi but this is character driven writing with space ships ;)
I do reccomend it whole heartedly.

Four and a half stars. I really enjoyed this book. The same characters and their irreverence towards each other abound. What really is interesting is the change of pace towards more intrigue. There are evil plots about and we have to wonder if Omega Force will figure it all out before it's too late.
