I'm Not in the Band

Rate this book
I like Kassidy Milton. There, I said it. She’s funny, beautiful—even though she doesn’t know it—and my favorite kind of weird. But I can’t tell if she’s into me or just trying to get close to me for a chance with my famous twin brother instead. I mean, it has to be me. I am the better-looking one. But Kassidy has some demons, and she’s not good at letting people in. That happens when you’ve been hurt by someone close to you. I can relate. Trust is a funny thing; it’s hard to gain but easy to lose. I might just learn that the hard way. This Entangled Teen Crush book includes a snarky heroine, a swoon-worthy hero, crazy best friends, your favorite music, and lots of feels.

I'm Not In The Band

Amber Garza

Received from Netgalley

Why have I never read Amber Garza before? I loved I'M NOT IN THE BAND so much that I read it in one sitting! That says a lot doesn't it? Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down and was so involved in all the characters lives. Kassidy Milton finds herself at a Playlisters concert with her sister, Sophie. While trying to find something edible at the snack bar she bumps in to a dude named Archer. Archer just happens to be the twin brother of Ross Devlin, the lead singer of the Playlisters. Since Kassidy tells Archer she is new to his high school and has no friends there, he persuades her to give him her phone number so he can show her around when school starts.

Kassidy knows she just met Archer but can't help but feel that Archer is a good guy. I'M NOT IN THE BAND is how Archer deals with having a famous brother. It is also the story about finding yourself and growing up. I found myself giggling out loud while reading this sweet and fun story. Kassidy tries real hard to make friends when she gets to school but it seems as if most of the girls hate her because of her friendship with Archer. She also suffers from panic attacks but tries not to let Archer see them. Once he does realize what is going on, he really tries to help her get through them and that is when my heart was filled with Archer. He was almost perfect for Kassidy and you wont be able to help yourself from falling for him.

I'M NOT IN THE BAND addresses some serious issues, but not too much that you feel depressed reading about them. But they do feel very real and you even might find yourself relating to many of them. Being in the shadow of others is a big one for me. Not long after starting I'M NOT IN THE BAND, I was praying that Kassidy would trust her instincts and not push Archer away. Would Archer ever be able to get out from his famous brother's shadow and realize that Kassidy truly likes him? Amber Garza put my emotions on a crazy roller coaster ride and I loved every minute of it! I'm excited to go back and read the rest of her books!

This was a cute read. It’s fast and airy, and well put together. I loved how the text was organized, the difference between the two POVs.
There were a few things that I disliked though, they all had to do with the story, without any specifics:
1. Things dragged out too much
2. Everything between the main Kassidy and her love interest Archer was just so dramatic and/or childish
3. Everything seemed childish, and petty
4. The infamous ‘not like other girls’ line made an appearance, and not in a good way

The writing was okay, the characters were okay. The book itself is okay. It’s a quick YA romance read, but it didn’t wow me as much as I expected it to.

This was an okay book. There wasn't really anything wrong with it, but it wasn't really memorable either. It was the perfect time for me to read it though, after just finishing a book that had my mind racing, this was a nice break for me to just relax and read.

Things I Liked :
I liked the different formats for the different POV chapters. We get a lot of humor through Archer's chapters and his interactions with his friends in the multimedia text/status update style of his chapters. We get to really see Kassidy's fears and learn more about her through her more standard format.

I really liked the sibling relationships in this as well. Sophie and Kass are completely different, but still clearly love each other. And twins always are a bonus for me so Archer and Ross were a highlight, even though we don't see a ton of Ross.

Things I Didn't Like :
There were hints of Kassidy being "not like other girls" through the story and ugh. It just made me want to roll my eyes.

There was too much teasing about Kassidy's past and it too way too long to find out more about her history. And by then, I kind of didn't care.

The story was also a little heavy on the teenage pettiness and melodrama. I'm all for tropes and cliches, I would just like a little more to the story than just the cliche.

Overall, not a bad story, but not something that I'll remember next year. It was a nice and quick read, perfect after reading a ringer of a book.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author.

I enjoyed this fluffy read that I ended up finishing in just one night!

You follow, Kassidy, who is a sweet and shy girl, dealing with some past demons. I liked her a lot more as the story went on, once her character started to develop and she broke out of her comfort zone. I know a lot of it had to do with, Archer, this adorable and likable guy who is the twin to a famous Pop Star. His main attraction to Kassidy had a lot to do with the fact that she saw him as a real person, and not just the Pop Star's brother. She was real and caring to him, and that's something he really needed. Their relationship as friends blossomed beautifully and it wasn't forced at all.

I also really liked her sister, Sophie. She reminded me of myself a little. How she always looked out for her sister and made her more excited about the new and fun things that are happening in her life. She was a very important person in Kassidy's life and someone she was able to go to for anything.

My main complaint with this book is the fact that I felt it was a bit too "young" for me. In the sense that, it had a lot of social media references and the dialogue was a bit immature at times. That took away from the connection I had with the story for me. I do believe more people in the age group of 14-17 will feel right at home with this book!

Nonetheless, it was cute and lovable at times. This is for sure a book for the young girlies out there who know a thing or two about fan girling, and swooning over the next cute guy. Though this story definitely touches on more serious issues, which I felt made it all more relatable for the readers.

**2.75 estrellitas

I loved this book. It's the perfect blend of fun, sweet and sexy for a YA book. It's definitely worth the time it takes to devour it!

I love these characters. Kass has just gone through some type of crisis at her old private school and has moved to the public school. We don't learn too much about it besides her wanting to avoid old friends and a panic attack. I like her even though there is some mystery of why's. She's trying new things and making new friends. She has a sense of doing what's right about her and cares about people. She runs every morning and is seeming to deal with her issues. But there is a powerful fear that holds her and we don't learn the truth of all of it till the very end. And I was surprised by that truth. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. And that just doesn't happen a lot to me. So yay!

I loved Archer so much. His twin is an up and coming rock star and he's learned that most girls are using him to get to his brother. His issues are a lot more transparent than Kassidy's but they still needed to be resolved. I like that he was caring and he like Kass for who she was. The girls that kept trying to get his attention just didn't have a chance. He let it all just roll of him. And I loved his social media presence. The book is dual point of view but we only see Archer from his social media posts and his texts. He's close with his brother despite the girl issues. And the boy has a ripped chest!

The story is great. These two both have issues to resolve and a senior year to survive. They go together like summer and flip flops. What was best about this very fast read was how things played out. The issue between them is authentically teen and resolution feels genuine. I just kept smiling as I read. It was enjoyable and entertaining.

Great summer read for teens and adults alike, I really enjoyed this one.

When I started reading I'm Not in the Band by Amber Garza I thought this is just another teenage Rockstar novel. And actually that is just what this book is NOT. Because we are not reading about the famous Rockstar that meets a girl.
No .. we are reading the story of this brother and his struggle with just the fact that his brother is famous. It is about growing up and finding yourself. This becomes even more clear when we take a look at the female lead.
Her past has shaped her into something that she is not willing to be anymore. And while she struggles to break free from what holds her (and yes I am cryptic to keep it spoilerfree) she stumbles across this really cute guy that also second guesses everything about every new person he meets.

You can prepare yourself for acts of jealousy, prejudice, hurt and betrayal – and amongst all of this the tiny blossom of friendship and maybe more ? that struggles to survive with everything pointing in the opposite direction.

This book is a lesson on when to trust your instincts and when to follow your heart even if you are at a risk of getting hurt.

Also the writing style of this book is not only fresh but also kind of unique. As it is the first book that is really in great parts written like conversations are really held today (yeah – I know cryptic much – but you will be surprised – I know I was … )

It is not a 5 star read because I did not find myself crying a river or laughing out loud but it is a solid 4 stars and I am pretty sure it will find many lovers in this genre – therefore enjoy….

A very cute and sweet YA read!I usually don't read too many YA books these days, but this one's blurb caught my eye and my interest was piqued! And after recognizing the author's name I realized that I'd read a few books of hers. And her book Tripping Me Up was a favorite of mine when I'd read it a few years back!

I'm Not In The Band was also really good and different from the usually boring contemporary YA books.Because, other than a few exceptional books by Kasie West,Morgan Maston, Jenn Bennett,Deb Caletti and such none have really caught my attention.
INitB has refreshing and original characters whom I grew to love!Archer has always lived in his famous brother's shadow and is tired of people coming close to him with an agenda. So he's surprised to meet Kassidy, at one of his brother's concerts, who isn't interested in his brother or him for the benefits.Kassidy has her own issues to deal with from her past, and is quite wary of letting people in.
But they were really cute together! You can expect a little bit of the usual teen drama - jealousy,ex issues, mean girls,etc- but without too much angst!
Each character had their own set of things to work through, and the author handled it quite brilliantly!I really liked the development of the characters too! So,if you're looking for feel good, cute YA read with refreshing characters and amazing writing, I'd suggest this one!Do give it a try!

* I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley is exchange for my honest review*

This book was super adorable. We have the main characters Kassidy , who is trying to move on after a devastating even and then we have Archer, who is tired of being used and living in his famous brothers shadow. I'm giving this book 3.5 stars. Almost four I just would have been a little longer. Also I would have liked to see more of the characters together. Aside from that is was a cute and easy read that gave me all times of feels. Plus I also really enjoyed kassidy's mother #awesome lol ( if you've read it you will get the joke)

I received a ARC e-book from the publisher via Netgalley.

Overall this was a cute book. I wish the two main characters would have had a little more happy interactions other than the drama on both sides. However that being said there wasn't THAT much drama. The characters were loveable with flaws and insecurities which always makes them feel more human. I honestly am hoping this would be a series so we can find out more about the brother and sister. It would be fun watch them find love too. I recommend this read as a fun and cute read.

I'm Not in the Band is cute but not as fluffy as I initially expected.

This is my first book by Garza and I really like her writing style. The story is told from Kass and Archer's POV. While Kass's POV is told in the first narrative, Archer's is narrated through social media posts and messages. At first, I was kinda worried that I wouldn't like Archer's POV... but very quickly I realized I totally adore it. It's a very interesting and quirky way to tell a story. Not an easy choice, but Garza nailed it. One of the things I loved most about Garza story telling was the sense of humor.

Going back to the fluffy part. As I said this is cute. It has its fair share of melodramas. It's packed with teenage insecurities, but it also does touch on some heavier subjects. I did enjoy the story line and kept wondering at the "mystery" though by the time we got the "reveal", I had figured it out. I like the subject and I genuinely got where Kass was coming from. I experienced the same with a friend, so I know the shock when it happens. I could totally relate to many of Kass feelings.
There is no deep analyses or great solution in this book. Which was fine by me, it is after all a cute romance novel. I do however feel that there was this huge build up to the reveal and then things were "sorted", the end. It felt a bit rushed and retrospectively I'm not even sure if the situation was actually "handled".

The character building is great. I love- nay ADORE - Archer. I liked Kass. They both a bit melodramatic, there is plenty of dramas between them, yet while Garza pushed the melodramatics, she didn't push them too far IMO. We talking teenagers after all. I quite like the siblings' tensions. They are relatable. I mean we all have some sort of odd rivalry/ insecurities when it comes to our siblings/ families during our teens, thankfully most of us do resolve them then as well... It gives the book the unexpected depth I was talking about right in the beginning.
My biggest issue, however? The female support cast. With the exception of a couple, they are all horrible. Even Kass sister is kinda superficial, or at least she seems like it in the beginning. It's like all the teen girls in this novel are super good looking and manipulative, opportunistic and quite underhanded. Like every other girl is only interested in Archer because of his brother? Really?? That's just sad.

Well written novel, that made me smile and laugh quite a bit. Great male lead, totally swoon worthy and some interesting subjects.
In three words: Cute, great humor and quirky.

This is a really great sweet romance that is perfect for young teens who are looking for a light-hearted story of first love. Kassidy and Archer's story touches on many themes--jealousy, competition whether it's with a sibling you feel inferior to or a friend who puts you down, and striving to be your authentic self. It hits all the funny notes just right, particularly in the texting and messaging, and in the parents' attempts to relate to their kids in teenspeak. Amber Garza is a hoot! So glad I got the chance to read this.

“I’m Not in the Band” is a cute YA romance about Kassidy and Archer. Archer has been forced into the shadow of his identical twin brother, who is the lead singer for a popular boy band, and resents (although he loves his brother) the unwanted attention- as girls only want him as far as it takes to get to his brother. Kassidy has some issues of her own to work through- we know there was some kind of event at her old school that really changed her life, and she was transferred from private to public school as a result; we don’t learn more about the event until about 80% of the way through the book. She also appears to have some undiagnosed psychiatric disorder(s), potentially anxiety, which manifests primarily as fear of illness/”germs,” and maybe also an eating disorder (not entirely clear, but extremely strict about eating and exercise, so maybe/maybe not).

Anyway, cue the meet-cute, where Kassidy is at Archer’s brother’s concert with her sister, who is a big fan, and they literally run into each other. At hearing Kassidy doesn’t even know who his brother is, Archer’s all about her and gets her phone number right away. Kassidy is loving the attention she’s getting from the attractive stranger. This doesn’t feel like insta-love, just lust, as the obsession is not immediate and they don’t go crazy. They exchange numbers, he thinks about asking her out, and they text- but not too much, as Archer is coached by his friend Mac, a self-professed ladies’ man (and seeming jerk/womanizer).

The plot alternates between Kassidy’s point-of-view in first person traditional prose and Archer’s point-of-view told entirely through texts, tweets, facebook posts, and the occasional script-like conversation. The differences in the types of writing were really interesting and add something unique to your typical boy-meets-girl story. They both have their hang-ups, and these were set as main plot points, and I think they may have been over-exaggerated for some teenage-style drama- particularly on Archer’s side, so much lead up to the issue and then minimal resolution (but could be the limited POV from his side of just conversations).

My biggest concern here is for Kassidy’s psychological well-being. It’s pretty clear she’s not coping extremely well with the event (that we learn about at the end), and the care is fairly minimal- it’s mentioned that she’s seen a psychologist but not much more- seems like she would need more consistent care. I feel that this a little overlooked in the plot and maybe should have been a bigger point, but on the other hand, we only get small amounts, so a diagnosis (if necessary) is unclear. However, since her family is all clearly concerned and pointing out she’s not coping well, this leads me to believe that it is a big issue/should be addressed. I think it would have been helpful to hear about her going to regular therapy, as this sets a good example for younger readers of someone getting the help they need.

The romance was cute, and they spend a decent amount of time getting to know one another. I liked their relationship and the overall fast pace of the book- it’s a very fast read! I have some reservations overall, but I would be curious to see more from this author/world (if they do a Playlisters series). Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Disclaimer: This review MAY contain spoilers.

This was a cute book, but it lacked depth. I felt like this was just the bare bones of what a book should be. It's the difference between being told a story and living the story through the characters. It has just enough to make it a story, but not enough to make it memorable.

I loved the plot and the way that things played out overall, but I felt that there wasn't enough conflict. I think that if things had been stretched out over a longer period of time then it would have helped a bit. I also think that if Ross came back from his tour and actually spent time with Kassidy then it would have been the perfect addition to the story. Especially since they had so much in common. The premise of the book is great, but it's a little too fast-paced.

I liked the characters for the most part, but I didn't ever really feel invested in them. There wasn't a point in the story where I felt connected to them. I did enjoy their interactions, but they were just way too underdeveloped. By the time Kassidy's big reveal happens, I hardly cared anymore. And to be honest, the big reveal was a little disappointing. I was expecting more. Archer was an adorable character, but he really could have used more depth as well. All in all, this book could have used a lot more drama, inciting events, and character development to fill things in. I did enjoy the POV format used. Kassidy's POV chapters were written in first person, but Archer's POV chapters are in text message and social media status update format. It really worked and I liked it a lot.

I will admit that Kassidy and Archer were quite adorable together. I did enjoy their dialogues and the romantic scenes, but they were total case of instalove which is my most hated thing to run across in a romance. They liked each other initially for no other real reason other than they both thought that the other looked hot. As things move along in the book they do enjoy each other's company, but they really don't have much in common. And Kassidy has a lot in common with Archer's brother, which I think could have been explored more.

I loved all the family and friends in this. Kassidy and her sister have a great relationship. With her parents as well. Her mom cracked me up. Archer's family makes an appearance and Archer texts his family on the regular. Archer's friends, Mac and John, were great. I really liked Miranda's character as well, though I wish that she and Kassidy had really become better friends than just friends in their first class of the day.

Overall, this wasn't a perfect book by any means but it was okay. If you enjoy fast-paced young adult contemporary stories with instalove then you'll breeze through this one. The book was entertaining enough while I was reading it but I don't think that it is something that will stick with me.

Sometimes it’s really hard being a teenager, and when there are other factors in your life preventing you from fully being yourself it makes life even harder. I think that Amber Garza did a really great job showing the different sides to teenagers and just people in general today. Sometimes there are factors out of your control.

We meet Kassidy (great name by the way) who is out with her sister and trying to pretty much get her life back on track. She’s starting a new school and trying to find herself after her breakup with all her friends at her old school. Of course she just happens to run into a guy at a concert and one thing leads to another and they really hit it off. I think this is a fantasy of many teenage girls, to find a guy at a concert who just so happens to be related to the band or at least knows someone. I know when I was younger I used to fantasize about things like that. Anyway back to the story, it just so happens they go to the same school and he’s going to show her around.

I don’t really want to expand on the story to much because you should really check it out. But the interaction between these two and their friends is quite fun to experience. There is a bit of jealousy going on that I think anyone would feel and then of course all the backstory with Kassidy comes out in little pieces here and there. It’s interesting and difficult to live through her panic attacks, and understand what she’s going through but at the same time I think it’s something we definitely need to learn to understand. These are some serious illnesses, thoughts and things that happen to these kids and it will just make you a better person for reading about them and experiencing it through their eyes. Especially because the author did such a great job describing them.

This was really a great book overall and I think anyone would enjoy it. I love the cover I think it’s sweet and endearing and I’m totally rooting for these two to live happily ever after. Great quick read with some serious undertones.

Cute book! But of course Entangled always makes the best YA :) Head over to HEA to read the whole interview!

INTERVIEW WITH AMBER GARZA

Jessie: Tell us about Kassidy and Archer!

Amber: Archer is a fun, intelligent, witty guy. He loves movies and one day wants to be a producer. His twin brother is a famous pop star, and he’s lived in his shadow most of his life.

Kassidy is sweet and sometimes quiet. She’s still trying to find herself, and she’s wrestling with a lot of demons from her past. But she’s a good friend — loyal and kind — and she loves to have a good time.

Amber Garza

Jessie: I love the romance. How did it feel to write it?

Amber: Thanks. The story was really fun to write. Even though it had some heavy issues in it, the story itself didn’t feel heavy. It was light and at times comedic. I enjoyed that. My favorite part was probably the texts and social media posts of Archer’s and his friends.

Jessie: Why did you decide to reveal Kassidy’s past/history so far along and slowly?

*I RECEIEVED AN E-ARC FROM NETGALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR MY HONEST REVIEW*

I really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet story of self discovery and forgiveness.

Archer just wants to be a normal teenager, however his twin brother is the lead singer in a popular band, and people either mistake him for his twin, Ross, or use him to get to know Ross. Archer has been burned one too many tomes, but when he meets a cute girl (Kassidy) who doesn't even know who Ross is, Archer decides he wants to get to know her more.
Kassidy has some issues (which are explained through the story), and this year she has decided on a fresh start. She is attending a new school for her senior year - and is more than happy for Archer to show her around. Kassidy is a flawed and relatable character. I suspected what her issues might have been, but I didn't guess the full extent (it was nice to be surprised - often these sorts of books are extremely predictable).

This book was a nice mix of sweet romance, great friendships, laugh out loud fun and a little bit of sadness thrown in.

Highly recommend this book for lovers of YA Contemporary.

I'm not in the band is a sweet teen read. It is perfect for the age group it is aimed at (12-16).

Kassidy is wanting a fresh start and is moving to a new school. Just before she starts, she attends a music concert where she meets a cute boy. Lucky for her he offers to show her around her new school.

Archer is a twin. He has always felt like he lives in his brother's shadow. He wants Kassidy to be the one thing that is truly his. He's been used before to get to his brother, but Kass seems different. Now all he has to do is pluck up the courage to ask her out.

This is a sweet clean read about a boy with a famous twin. I really enjoyed I'm not in the band and would recommend it. My favourite thing about this book is the modern writing style. It fits perfectly, and I think it will appeal to the desired teen age group. This book uses texts and social media to enhance the story. Both characters are likeable, and the storyline is engaging.

5 out of 5. Spot on!

Sweet, romantic mystery, and a page-turner to boot, this coming-of-age story was very well-told.

Kassidy is battling demons, so she changes school and starts to act "out of character". At a concert, she meets Archer Devlin, pop star Ross's twin brother. When she doesn't "recognise" him as his brother, they strike up a friendship that soon becomes something deeper. But Archer is also battling demons, and it doesn't take long for the two to collide...

The writing was fresh - alternating between Kassidy's story being narrated in prose and Archer's side told through texts/ social media posts - and done well, keeping my on my toes but also ensuring that I kept tearing through the book. The romance was sweet, but it was the mystery and coming-of-age elements that elevated this book. Recommended!

Thank you to Netgally and Entangled publishing for providing me with an eArc in exchange for an honest and unbiased review

I'm not in the bad was such a cute story. Our story rotates POV's between Kassidy, who is struggling with events that happened before our story starts and Archer, who is struggling to find the people who aren't using him to get to his pop star brother. This story is very love-at-first-sightish, our two MC's meet at a concert and there is an instant connection between them. This is the perfect story for the reader in your life who is looking to get their very first YA romance book as it's an easygoing lighthearted read.

I'm rating this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars as it is very short and isn't as descriptive as it could be but, i overall still enjoyed it.

My Rating  - 3.5

I'm not in the band is a short, cute and breezy read.

What I Liked ?

The way the author described Archer - the lead male's insecurities because being a famous rock star's twin brother a lot of people be - friend him just to get to his brother.

The way she kept the mystery of Kassidy's past a mystery right until the very end.
I did not expect it coming and was genuinely shocked by what it turned out to be.

The way she switched the POV's definitely breezy no hindrance at all.

What I didn't like ?

The way Kassidy kept referring other girls as "that typical girls". Initially it was relateable but later on it started sounding childish.

The writing style is definitely unique and social media influenced because a lot is said in terms of hash -tags and status updates!

A love-at-first-sight teen YA book! Would be a perfect night read!
I'd recommend more for people aged 16 - 18 because others might find it a bit childish!

I received a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads

LOVED this book! Everything about it appealed to me for a YA read. With just the right amount of innocence but still a bit of steam between the two leads to keep me interested I founds this book highly addictive. Drawing out the ghosts in Cassidy's past just long enough to keep things suspenseful but not aggravating (get to the point already type thing) I found the pacing to be perfect.

Cassidy is trying new things, she's coming into her own person after a tragedy has her rethinking her life. Archer is trying to get out from under the shadow of his famous twin brother who is the lead singer for the newest hot boy band. Everyone in school wants to get to know Archer only to get close to his twin. Cassidy is the new girl in school but that's not the only thing that attracts Archer to her.

There's some good young adult strife, some funny tweets & facebook posts and great coming of age drama. Very well written I thoroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover!

I loved the premise of this novel. I liked that the main character wasn't in the band himself, but had enough fame because of his twin brother and he was over it. A chance meeting between a girl who was not a fan of his brothers, but at the concert led to immediate sparks. These two characters had a sweet relationship and it was steady and slow in its unfolding, but believable and real feeling. There wasn't a ton going on, but I liked the simplicity of this novel. I got the romance and I got the emotions from the characters.

I really liked the book and I'd recommend based on quality of writing and the story. The story dealt with some hard issues that many people struggle with and taking a good chance on her instincts Kassiday confides with Archer. Archer has smaller issues but he also benefits from confiding with Kassiday. I enjoyed these characters...even Ross who seemed to genuinely root for Archer and Kassiday.

I'm thinking this book is geared for high school or younger adult but it's still about communication.

Quirky and fun. This is very Disney channel or Hallmark movie. Super cheese but in a fun way. The only drawback is the germophobe plot path; it added additional unneeded drama. 4.2/5
