Shane and Mariah’s Story
A Horse Whisperer Novel by Carol Devine

When I started reading a pdf version of this book I was gripped with foreboding. I suspected it was going to be just one more of those over-romanticized fantastical tales of unending idyllic love and romance without more than a fig leaf of plot or dramatic tension. And, at first, I felt confirmed in my fears as I soldiered my way through many pages of a long (at least for me) romantic scene. Then, slowly, after having made my way through several more romantic interludes a glimmer of hope of rescue emerged: Shane and Mariah’s Story was becoming a different tale. Indeed, a different tale all together and one I’d call a rarity.
Shane and Mariah’s story was beginning to create a world and the story of a relationship that didn’t derive from illusion or fantasy but gradually emerged from the reality of the world the pages of Shane were creating. At first, Shane told the story of falling in love so well known in literature, but then (and this is the rarity part) as the pages turned the reader was granted the privilege of watching a couple then ascend to love. Not some love that folds on its first encounter with heartrending obstacles but one that is well-earned as it grows deeper from the very dialectic of the couple’s working through their issues together and facing life’s inevitable obstacles, not via the hackneyed story of two becoming one, but as a couple comprised of two distinct and remarkable people committed to one another.

One of the aspects of the book I particularly treasured were the couple’s fights. These were not the bitchy shouting and screaming episodes found so regularly in the relationships of immature people but the more quietly expressed hurts and conflicts that characterize healthy relationship between two separate but related people. Not once was there an attack on the self of the other. Also, each partner gave ground from their love and care of the other. Shane and Mariah’s Story would be good reading for anyone who desires to know how a healthy relationship feels and sounds. The values conveyed were unabashedly strong family values and made this reader feel good just to be reminded of them in these ugly times that we live in.

Even though not long in page count, Shane took on something similar to epic proportions as it unexpectedly followed this couple through the various stages of the life-cycle. The author, Carol Devine, managed this feat not by lecturing but by pulling the reader into the story and the story into the reader as I followed Shane and Mariah through the courtship dance, the challenges of coupling in marriage without losing one’s self or damaging the other, the joys and heartaches of raising children, and various physical ailments that accrue to all if they are blessed to live long enough. In these pages, Carol Devine brings to life one couples inspiring way of navigating those rocky shoals made all the more realistic and accessible in that they do so in less than perfect but all too human ways that left me with tears rolling down my face and a paradoxically aching and joyful heart.

My hat is off to Carol Devine. I rarely give 5 star recommendations. I can think of only a handful of books in my entire life that would be deserving of that stellar ranking, but I can readily give Carol Devine’s Shane 4.5 stars and congratulate her on a job well done, well done indeed.

Shane by Carol Devine is a heartfelt, soul-warming story that is a must read. I was drawn into the heat and passion between the main characters Mariah and Shane. Their romance pulled me in instantly like a moth to a flame. Their love was realistic and full of everything you want when reading a romantic story including lust, grief and overcoming big changes like the loss of one’s independence as a couple becomes one connected by the heart forever. The characters that Carol Devine has created are multi-dimensional and relatable on many levels. As the story unfolds, the writing is engaging with good foreshadowing to the future. The quote “Shane was floored, stripped to where he felt naked” was so telling that I could not put the book down until I knew what happened next. Their love is challenged by events completely out of their control including a family member with alcoholism and a horse riding accident. Amongst all of this Shane and Mariah start a family which throws their relationship into chaos as they adjust to the struggles of being overtired, overworked, stressed and not being able to find enough quality time for their relationship. This story is one of love triumphing over all things. A true testament to the strength of a woman who never loses faith. Shane and Mariah’s love story is an inspiring journey that everyone should read. It will warm your heart and leave you in tears from both joy and sadness. Carol Devine’s writing is absolutely poetic and I can’t wait to read more from this brilliant author. Without giving any more of this story away I will leave you with my favorite quote from the book Shane: “The tree became symbolic of the perfection of the moment. It stayed with her, through her trials to come, a balm for her past and a glimpse of her future, centered within her life.”

This one crept up on me a bit. Starting out with what seemed like a routine runaway teenage girl found out on the highway by a horse whisperer whose girlfriend is a PI, I thought we were into romantic thriller territory. But that storyline was wrapped up in double-quick time and I found myself being gently immersed in the love story between Shane and Mariah, one that stretches not just over days or weeks but over years.

It’s a tricky work to master, what areas of a relationship should be touched on and what should be explored in full. Carol Devine gives the reader everything; good times, bad times, love and heartbreak. Shane and Mariah are a couple who grow together, making the sacrifices necessary to stay with each other as life has its way of pulling them apart.

This isn’t quite a sweeping saga, but gets pretty close, and will appeal to any fan of the romance genre.

I was a little wary when I started reading this book as between review groups, this was the third romance involving a rancher in a row that I've reviewed in 2 weeks.

This one was pleasantly surprising. I haven't read the first book in the series, so I don't know how Shane and Mariah actually got together. This book is more like a sweet romance about the ultimate happy ending with them growing old together. It's like watching that sweet older couple on the street who still seem totally smitten with each other after been married 60 years, if you could watch their marriage develop over the years. You see their ups and downs, normal fears, irrational fears, children being born.

Overall, it was a very sweet, refreshing read. There was no unreal drama or hysterics from any of the characters. It was just watching two people in love fall deeper in love and grow old together
