JIM MAHFOOD (Tank Girl, Clerks) debuts his first new creator-owned work in years with the glorious return of GRRL SCOUTS! Join Gwen, Daphne, and Rita as they reunite for a pulse-pounding psychedelic adventure through the streets of Freak City. This first issue is stuffed to the gills with an action-packed story, bonus art, soundtrack, sketchbook, and a behind-the-scenes comic thingy. Plus, a variant cover by the one and only SKOTTIE YOUNG! Pure fun! Pure flavor!
I LOVE Mahfood's art. I was immediately attracted to booth while I was at NY comic-con. I bought this issue mostly because of his art. I then proceeded to find his society6 page and see if I can purchase a phone cover with his art on it. That being said the plot is about three girls called Daphne, Rita, and Gwen who are drug dealers.
I liked the premise and to be honest, the dialogue is quirky and caught my interest. I am not sure if I am going to fully invest in the series (hence why I only got the first issue and not the volume). But I will be getting the next issue as I am intrigued by Daphne's magic socks. If you are not interested in a bunch of girls getting high and some violence, I would recommend that you pass on this series. If so, I give you the green light.
I really wanted to love this. The premise seems perfect for me! Unfortunately, the story and the art were all over the place. I couldn't follow the story because the characters looked too similar (basically scribbles) and the art had a couple of nice moments (the art studio whole page panel) but overall was scribbled stick figures with perky butts and boobs. The dialogue seemed like it was just yelling angry "punk rock" and gang cliches. Sadly, not for me. I couldn't even finish it.
Chaotic art, gnarly action, drugs, nasty girl gang and a wonderfully strange tale about magic socks that came from 'extracurriculars beings'. There's a charming nonchalant essence about Daphne, who comes back from the edge, to rescue her two best gals from her murderous cousin. What more could you want? Read it for the experience not necessarily for the story, but the characters pull you through the fugue-like atmosphere of the setting and story.
This is a self contained story that feels very much like Tank Girl. There were parts that felt like it moved very quickly and confusing, but they would be explained by the end of the title.
Great art and if you stick with it you see the story going somewhere and the characters individuating. Picked this up from Jim at a comicon and he talks about just wanting to draw and write fun comics, nothing serious...that's what this is.
