I had plans, all right. The 3 G's: Grad school. Great job. Good, ORDERLY life.
Do you see a side helping of private investigating anywhere on that menu? I don't think so.
So how in the world did I find myself plunging, head first, into the dark depths of an underhanded, manipulative corporate scandal—risking life and career alike—when I SHOULD have been focused on my impending graduation and precisely planned future?
Only one answer could explain it, really: Sloan. McKenzie.
Impulse Spy is an exciting mystery adventure driven by a beautiful, mysterious stranger who might be nothing but trouble. Perfect for long-time cozy readers as well as YA and new adult readers looking for a little amateur sleuth intrigue in their lives.
Cute, fluffy, and girly. The stakes are low, there's essentially no violence, and there's no romantic b-plot like many books such as this one utilize.
There's a few typos throughout the book and minor continuity issues (like someone ordering a martini but inexplicably sipping wine the next page over). They're fairly ignorable though.
Overall this is the kind of book you might want to read on a plane or while sitting by the pool on vacation since it doesn't ask much of you - just don't ask much of it in return.
Just the book I needed to read at the end of a stressful tax season. Characters were wonderfully developed, and the story line was both suspenseful and comedic. Easy and fun read.
Quinn had an orderly life until she met the mysterious Sloan McKenzie. After a strange meeting, Quinn finds herself driven by one mysterious adventure after the other. Quinn joins forces with the impulsive Sloan and is soon on the fast track to becoming a sonic sleuth.
Impulse Spy was great! I enjoyed the developing friendship between Quinn and Sloan. It isn't easy to trust people in today's world, so it's nice to watch Quinn place all her faith and trust in Sloan. As for Sloan, she's edgy. She's impulsive, which can also be defined as dangerous. However, Sloan always has Quinn's back. I see a strong friendship forming between two intelligent women that must be based on trust. Knox doesn't reveal everything in Book One. She slowly peels back the layers of her characters allowing a glimpse of character motivation. It's slow build and I like it that way. An example: For all Sloan's bravado, we're given a brief look into her painful past –it's probably the defining moment of Sloan's life. Knox gives the reader just enough to form an emotional connection.. Most importantly, it's the Info you want most. Then there's Quinn, the narrator. We know very little about her personal life. The investigative mystery develops at a quick pace and its pretty good. Still, I think the best part of this cozy mystery is going to be Sloan's backstory. You better believe I'll be back for that!
My first cozy mystery of the year gets a big thumbs up.👍
FYI: I also own the Audible version and enjoyed both.
Impulse Spy is a fun, modern private-eye story, filled with disguises, secret drops, hidden cameras...and lots of trips to the diner. The two main sleuths are likeable and smart, and I look forward to more of their adventures. This one's a great listen on audio!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the audiobook from the author for review. All opinions are my own.
Quinn, a graduate student in audiology, was finishing a mystery at the bookstore cafe when her attention is drawn to a very confident urbane looking woman who was flirting with the barista. Quinn decided to look for her next book to read and found herself near the woman who was now conducting a conversation in Russian while flipping through a book on investing. Quinn's curiosity was piqued so she followed the woman through the store until the woman confronted her.
Later Quinn finds clues in books that lead her to Joe's Diner and the woman that she had followed named Sloan. Sloan is an investigator not a spy as Quinn had first surmised. Sloan prevails upon Quinn to help her with her investigation and Quinn is hooked.
This is book one in what may be a series. I liked the plotting and the relationship between Quinn and Sloan. There is room for growth and expansion of the story in future books.
I won this book and wasn’t required to write a review but I wanted to report that I liked it. It grabbed my interest right away and kept moving at a great pace. I was surprised to find words left out of sentences here and there but the overall writing and clever story more than made up for it. I could easily picture the characters, their expressions and their movements thanks to the good writing so for that I’m thankful because plenty of authors don’t do that for me. I recommend this lively, quick read which, by the way, was not gross in any way, in case you wondered.
Impulse Spy is a story that grabs from page one and keeps you till it's finished. Kept me into the night. The main characters Quinn and Sloane are ones I hope to see much more of in an ongoing series. One knows herself well, the other is about to broaden her self worth. Carrie Ann Knox supplies action, suspense and a laugh out load good time read. There are a few villains and a colorful cast of others. What can happen when you 'people watch' a little to closely...(?). A creative read not to be missed !!!
Only four stars because the premise was too unbelievable. What intelligent person on the verge of becoming a doctor in audiologist would risk her reputation, freedom from prison and life for a few thrills because she loves murder mysteries? She doesn't question anything, doesn't know the woman or any of her friends, just jumps in. Doesn't know if what she's doing is legal. And Sloan just hires her, although no mention is ever made of pay, not knowing much about her and her boyfriend just got killed but she trusts a stranger.
Impulse Spy is a delightful cozy mystery which grabs your interest from the beginning to end. I enjoyed the main characters, Quinn and Sloane and am interested in reading more of their adventures. Quinn unexpectedly finds herself working for Sloane. Sloane does a great job of dangling the interesting parts of the job in front of Quinn while testing her to see if she is really cut out for this type of work. They make a great investigative pair.
A young woman taking on a new career finds something more interesting than the one she initially planned on-- she is learning to be a sleuth! Coming into near death experiences and learning that she has a certain aptitude for detecting she becomes a part time spy and learns the business from the ground floor up! Entertaining and though it is not very realistic it is very enjoyable! She ends up learning a great deal about herself in the process!
... In fact, solving the murder is not the main focus of the story. Sloan is hired to "get some dirt" on her client's brother. She's good at this type of thing. Quinn knows nothing about detective work, but she's a defective novel nut, and she can't resist helping Sloan. I loved the characters and enjoyed the story.
"Impulse Spy" is so much fun I must try another novel in this genre. The story is humorous, lively, and intriguing. Two women, one a private investigator, the other a graduate student, join forces to find the truth in a convoluted case. It's fun to see smart women at work.
Impulse spy is for those who are into cozy mysteries. It didn't have romantic element like most cozy mysteries which was good for me. Personally I prefer thriller mysteries with lots of suspense and twists. If you're looking for a quick and easy read then you can give this book a try.
Interesting way an audiologist student gets involved with a PI and joins forces with her. A variety of characters, provide the who, but the total picture took time to unravel. It was one of those stories that the more you know, you realize the less you really do know. Interesting to read, and kept my attention.
I love stories where your interest is captured from Page 1. I enjoyed learning about Quinn and Sloane and the network of PI associates. This story was well paced, had interesting characters, and a well developed plot. I am excited to read the next book in the series! I would highly recommend this book.
I found this book very interesting, and I dove right into the next one when I finished. There were a few editorial issues (typos) that bothered me, and something about the first chapter was confusing. I had to go back and read it again to get comfortable before I could continue on. But I felt like I learned a bit about hearing aids and technology, as well as enjoying a cozy mystery.
Fun concept. A little round about and scattered with the main character out of the loop for most of the book but some great ideas. Interested to see where this series leads.
Received this free ebook thru Goodreads for an honest review. Typical cozy mystery. Nice clean content. Atypical for no romance. Characters too cutesy for me. Didn't love it didn't hate it. I give it a thumbs up for cozy mystery lovers.
The protagonist is very likable, and brings the reader along as she is drawn into a mystery when her curiosity gets the better of her. The characters are worthy of further development and I look forward to more books in the series.
Love love loved it! Just lighthearted enough, but with interesting twists and fun characters. None of the typical over-the-top characters in many cozies. Just a different story. Can't wait for the next one!
Characterisation is good all major players have dimension. There is meat in the story and pace. The girls are feminine, and capable without being over the top. Enjoyable, I may buy the next one.
Loved this awesome read with awesome characters and storyline. Working to become a doctor, young girl helps a PI, sort of, find the truth to a mystery. A definite must read, so much more to learn!
The book is well written. The characters are believable and the story is well developed. It's a good, clean easy read for a relaxing evening. My plans are to read more from this author.
Sloan, a P.I. and Quinn is a medical intern in audiology, work together to solve a case. This book was mediocre, neither excellent, nor terrible. It was a pleasant diversion, but I'm not tempted to read more of the books in the series.
A sleuth and an unlikely partner made for a fun, easy read. This book was hard to put down. I’m looking forward to reading the next adventure with Sloan and Quinn.
I loved this unique take on sleuthing! The characters popped, the wit was perfect, the editing was thorough, and the pacing was right on. I'll be keeping an eye out for more by this author!
This was fun! Really well written and a fun girl-power sleuthing story. Not a romance, which is different for me, but I really enjoyed it. Content: Clean.
