Welcome to Burnt River, a new series of Contemporary Western Romance stories set in the fictional town of Burnt River, Montana. Brought to you by Shirleen Davies, Peggy L Henderson, Kay P. Dawson, Amelia Adams, and Kate Cambridge.
One person's influence has the power to change their lives... It's good to have ambitions and goals, as long as they're our own and not someone else's. After a decade-long absence, Allison Cramer returns to her childhood home to pay tribute to a former teacher. Years of excelling in all of her classes, and pursuing a doctorate at MIT should give her an abundance of confidence and pride. When she realizes that the insecure, sixteen-year-old bookworm she's tried to bury is still only skin-deep, she must take a hard look at herself. Coming back may open her eyes to what her heart has always wanted.
Do you quit, or continue despite insurmountable odds? Shane Taggart has seen more tragedy before his twenty-first birthday than most people experience in a lifetime. Taking the responsibility of the world on his shoulders has become a way of life. There is no room for fun and socializing, until his head is turned by a vague high school memory with blonde hair and a pile of books.
Letting go of the past while being immersed in it may be the only way Alley and Shane can move forward. Leaving behind the childhood images of who they were, they discover that seeking individual dreams can be attained through the strength found in each other, and that love may be the greatest influence of all.
Shane's Burden is a standalone, full-length novel with a HEA Rated PG - contains some mild swearing and kissing
I never thought I'd be a writer, much less publish a book some day. I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I guess life just had other plans for me. When my husband and I decided to start a family, vet school pretty much went out the window. I used to work with a vet who had three children while going through vet school. To this day, she is my hero.
I live with my husband and two teenage sons in southern California. I have a Welsh pony and a miniature horse (down-sized from a barn of six horses). A crazy Labrador retriever who is a food vacuum, three cats, two parakeets, four bearded dragons (my compromise with my sons when they wanted a snake), and a small flock of chickens complete our menagerie of critters. I can’t imagine my life without my animals. My dream is to live in Montana some day.
Four years ago, I began writing a story that, for whatever reason, was stuck in my head for almost a year. I have been an avid romance reader for a long time, and the idea took hold to - why not? - write my own! What a simple idea, right? It has been a long and difficult journey from my first sentence to a completed, and hopefully polished, manuscript. Today, I have a completed series of 5 books and a novella in what I called The Yellowstone Romance Series, two books in my new Second Chances Time Travel Romance Series, and I am currently working on the final book in a trilogy set in the Grand Tetons.
I have long been a fan of Peggy Henderson’s historical and time travel romances, and was looking forward to reading her first venture into a completely contemporary setting. As I expected, she can count herself just as successful in this context. Shane’s Burden is an excellent start to this new multi-author series set in a beautiful Montana location.
While it’s not the first time that a story has been written about a high school hunk and a nerdy, shy girl, this story is anything but predictable. Shane and Alley soon discover that they are both quite wrong in their assumptions about each other, and that they have misjudged each other. Watching them both develop and grow as people, and then, of course, fall in love with each other, is a beautiful thing. The romance between them is completely unexpected for both of them and is very sweet. And Shane is simply a swoon-worthy hero. He and Alley are a couple who stay with you after you’ve read the final page. I’m glad that there will be opportunity to meet them again in subsequent books.
The setting, as I mentioned earlier, is beautiful, and once again we are treated to one of Mrs Henderson’s fabulous horse ranches and the surrounding mountainous, wild countryside. As well as Shane and Alley, the rest of the characters are wonderful individuals, especially Shane’s sister, Raine, Alley’s grandfather, and the high school teacher, Mr Weiker.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shane’s burden and am looking forward to seeing how this series unfolds. A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
I actually listened to this book on Audible. I truly enjoyed this story! I thought the characters and the plot were totally believable and I was easily able to relate to the story! This was my first "non-time travel" book I've experienced from Peggy L Henderson, but she proved to me that she can definitely write in modern day too! I've really enjoyed her time travel series because she really does her homework on the settings and time periods, but this novel was just as enjoyable and realistic! I also enjoyed listening to Cody Roberts rendition of this book. I usually listen to books at a 1.25 speed and think that Cody's voice is perfect at this speed! He's easy to understand and soothing to listen to! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! Keep up the great work Peggy & Cody!
They opposites attract but can that occur over vast amounts of time and distance? Is lasting love in the future for a super intelligent nerdy girl and the cocky high school athlete who doesn’t know she exists? Well, it’s a romance novel with a great story wrapped around it. Best I can say is that you’ll enjoy the ride through the wide open spaces.
Shane and Allison's Story Coming back to your hometown is always a thrill and adventure. People change for better or worse. Feelings change or do they? This is a wonderful story for the first book in this series. It is a stand alone and full of page turning reading. Look forward to future books in this series.
The author used lay language unlike others who seem to try to use the longest words possible. That is my preferred method to reading for pleasure, using shorter but understanding what I am reading.
Allison & Shane seemed like the most unlikely couple. So I was immediately interested to see where this story would lead.
I found Allison very endearing. She thought that she had dealt with her insecurities from her teens but it turned out that when she returned to her childhood home that those insecurities resurfaced.
Shane had the weight of the world on his shoulders so I was incredibly surprised that he would even allow himself to have a relationship.
This story reminded me that The Lord does work in mysterious ways to help us heal. I loved that the Horses also played their part...
I am hooked on this new series of books that Peggy is writing and looking forward to the next one.
Wow! Peggy L Henderson, you did it again! Another wonderful book, so well written as always. You had me believing that I was a friend in a certain scene, ready to call my lawyer for advice. I was so mad at a certain character. Lol. Really pulled me in. Loved Shane and Allison and her loveable grandpa and I see many stories ahead, featuring the wonderful secondary characters with their own books. A sweet, entertaining romance with a very satisfying ending. JudyE
