Name in Japanese: 種村有菜 (Tanemura Arina) Western Zodiac: Pisces
Arina Tanemura was born on March 12, 1978. She's the author of Full Moon O Sagashite, Time Stranger Kyoko, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross, Sakura Hime Kaden, and more.
Her favorite hobby is Karaoke. One song that she sings is Smile, originally by Myco. She has two cats, named Riku and Kai. She has one elder and one younger sister and one brother. She's the type who hates to lose in anything. She also likes Ribon.
The Demon Princess Giselle is summoned by a 10-year-old human boy, Ichiritsu, who wants to form a pact with her to have his dearest wish granted. However, although Giselle agrees, she is forced back into the underworld by her father who considers such a pact below his daughter's standing. Six years later, Giselle has not forgotten about the pact and ascends to the human world to find Ichiritsu. Disguised as a boy herself, she infiltrates his all-boys-boarding school, only to find that he has undergone a complete change.
Akuma ni Chic x Hack was such a wonderful surprise! Going into his, I had very mixed feelings because I wasn't sure what the author would do with only two volumes and also because - that title... Can someone please explain what this title means because I can't get any sense out of "Chic x Hack"... Anyway! I was really quite impressed by what Tanemura did with just these two volumes. There is a lot going on but it never seemed rushed and, apart from a somewhat open end (which wasn't much of a bad thing), all events had enough time to be explored an unfold. The only reason I could have wished for more volumes is the fact that I really enjoyed the characters!
Giselle is a lovely protagonist! Not only does she have an awesome cat-like design, but her personality is fun and engaging. She can be a little naive at times but it fits in nicely with the fact that she is indeed not a human and therefore doesn't know everything about the human world - if anything, it makes her endearing. Demon or not, she's got a heart of gold and is absolutely selfless.
This short series also surprises with many unexpected twists. Once again, I am surprised at how many elements were put into this without seeming too much or losing its surprise-factor. Not only do the twists work out well, they are all brought around at just the right time which really helped to flesh out the characters. Even the very last chapters will show you just what kind of person Giselle is.
The same can be said about the rest of the cast. Her loyal cat friend, Masokachi, starts out as a bland and irritating character. Yet his part of the story comes pretty late and just completely changes how you perceive his character. I wouldn't mind reading an extra volume or two just about him. Before Masokachi's big reveal, I felt that he was the odd one out - I loved how all the other characters had such wonderfully natural reactions to events. And yes, even flat Masokachi just gives you a 'So that's why he's doing it!' moment.
While Masokachi becomes interesting quite late, Giselle, along Ichiritsu and his childhood friend Shundai, bring more than enough to the table. Ichiritsu has got quite a bit on his mind which is revealed in chunks throughout the story which also slowly puts him in a favourable light. I also loved how Shundai developed a small crush on Giselle - which some might consider an unnecessary love triangle, Shundai's crush felt like a natural reaction to their spending time together and definitely adds to the story and how the characters deal with it. Once again, it is actually a good thing that the ending is left somewhat open.
Tanemura's art has slowly been changing and I think it shows the most in this particular work. She's definitely been working more on how she draws male characters and the character's facial features seem more round. I can't say whether I prefer this or the older style but I think both look wonderful. In any case, Akuma ni Chic x Hack is a great and balanced work which will provide with more than just one surprise twist and will likely prove worth your time.
I had high hopes for this because unfortunately I wasn't the biggest fan of Arina Tanemura's My Magic Fridays series and I just really wanted to love something by her again. At first I wasn't too sure about the story and the fact that our main character is the only female character. But pretty quickly I started to enjoy it and I'm really looking forward to the next volume. I actually totally predicted the ending of this volume but either way - I gasped hahah. As always, the artwork is absolutely stunning. I just love Arina's artwork sooo much.
A new Arina Tanemura manga, and I am delighted that the German publisher licensed it. :)
I am not so sure about the love quartet and maybe even further, given the ending. Cat (who can transform to human) and Shundai like Giselle, while Giselle herself like Ichiritsu... Oh, and then there is that ending that I totally didn't see coming.
It was also quite magical that the wig could stay on like that, and that she could hide all her hair under it without it popping out at times. :P
But good story, and I am curious to see how it will continue. Especially with that ending!
