Adelia Kreegan's tutelage continues under the great sage of Forsynthia, Gaston Camlann. The young apprentice makes strides with her lessons, and develops a rapport with her mentor. Finally, peace seems to come to Adelia. Everything changes when Lucinda arrives at the keep. The new arrival, a talented sorceress in her own right, sends flirtations and salacious remarks toward the sage. Instead of succumbing to embarrassment, Gaston employs Lucinda in order to further Adelia's training. But when the mischievous woman ends up taking a magical joke too far, a new question remains before the magicians of Forsynthia. Will things ever be the same?
This is the 3rd book I've read in the Tellest world, and the 3rd one I've passed to my 15 year old daughter. Unlike the first book, Mageborn, this one expands the world around Forsynthia a bit while also poking at the edges of other wizards and the cat Merlin. I personally found the military conflict with another political entity fun and enjoyed the notion of the Sage having built a keep/territory that most people don't even know about yet. It's a fun perspective.
The cat character Merlin gets expanded a lot in this story. Without spoiling anything, I will freely say that I expected the story to go one with both Merlin and Adelia's characters and I chuckled when it did not.
To get a 5 star rating, I'd want to see more of the motivations behind why things are the way they are. This is an issue I have with most YA fantasy. By contrast, my 15 year old finished it last night and she said this is definitely a 5 star book.
Transformed is the continuation of Adelia's story as her magic gets stronger and her dark side follows. In this follow up to Mageborn, we get to learn more about the politics of the world and how different Forsynthia is from its counterpart. I am definitely curious to see how this develops more in the coming books. I was pleasantly surprised to get to know so much more about Merlin in this story. His relationship with Adelia could have gone one way, but I saw them more as a big sister caring for her little brother, which felt like a warm, familiar blanket as I read this book.
This series is showing growth in magic for a young female wizard. Learning by mistakes and caring for others are her first steps in changing things around her. She must face her fears and strengthen her mind. Fight evil or let the dark side take over. Hard choices are just beginning, some she doesn't want to make. Thoroughly enjoyable for all ages . Can't wait for the next one.
I read the first book in this series back in 2015 when it was a new series for me, as well as a new author. I’ve since read more from the author and just awaited the sequel. A well written book with captivating characters that deserves more length. I eagerly look forward to more books in the series to see where it goes.
