Consequences is a supernatural thriller set on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. I was intrigued to read a novel by an author from a part of the world I knew little about, and do feel I’ve learned a bit about the island and its culture, but I’m somewhat ambivalent about the story itself.
Jade, Opal and Krystal are 27 year old triplets, successful in their chosen careers but estranged from their mother, Carla, a respected magistrate, and from each other. When they all suddenly experience a traumatic event, they have no idea that this is the revenge of a shadowy secret society with occult powers, that has been grooming their father, David, to be their messiah since childhood: having been elected Prime Minister, he has had a crisis of faith and gone on the run, so the girls must each lose the thing most dear to them.
This had an unusual plot construction - multiple characters are introduced one at a time, with most of the narrative in third person, but a few random characters telling their own stories (only the Afro-Caribbean men, I noticed). Considering the book purports to be about David, it is quite a while before he is introduced. The second part tells his backstory and makes it clear he’s no hero, then in the final part he does attempt to redeem himself.
The writing was good but I didn’t like any of the characters and found the random info-drops about the cult’s history, the country’s politics etc detracted from any emotional involvement in the story. The ending is abrupt and left many threads hanging, with no indication that there is to be a sequel. There was a bit too much going on, and I’m not a fan of cliffhanger endings, so would’ve preferred for most of them to be resolved.

I’m afraid that I found this book very hard to get through, especially for the first half. It did improve in the second half, but left you expecting another book to be following to continue the rest of the story. The book follows part of the life of a Prime Minister Elect, David, who has been primed from an early age to be the looked for Messiah, of the Fraternity of the Consecrated. An ancient cult who believe in a different religion and want to take over the world. They have shown him what they can do and he has started questioning, in his mind only (as anything else would be suicide), and has decided to leave.
It also follows Carla and her triplet daughters, into adulthood. Somehow all these people are connected and consequences follow David’s actions. He will have to decide whether he will deliver himself back to the cult and face certain death, or try to keep running when they are clearly following him and proven they will take action against any friends or family he has.
The start of the book jumps from character to character, with each new chapter. So, just as you are beginning to figure out who someone is, you have someone else to read about. This left me still wondering who was who, even as I reached the end of the book. It doesn’t help that several generations of relations are being described as the story goes on.
There isn’t enough background on the locations and people in the story, to help you really grow any affinity to them. It was ok in the second half, as the action and events started to ramp up a bit – as a result of the consequences to David’s action of the start of the book. The ending just leaves you unsatisfied. Is there to be a second book or is that it?
Luckily, I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the story above. I probably won’t try another book by this author if it is written in the same manner. It was just too much. Three stars is being generous, due mainly to the second half.

I received a free copy of this book to review. At first I was a bit confused, but once I understood WOW!!! This book grabbed me and hung on until the last word. I am hoping for a book two!!! Highly recommend this book!!!
