A spate of horrific murders has left residents of Hampshire's New Forest terrified and vulnerable. The police are utterly clueless as to who the culprit might be. Each kill site they uncover is clean, with not a drop of blood anywhere in sight. There's not even a finger or footprint to investigate. The police appear to be chasing shadows.
Enter Vincent Wong and his friends who plan to catch the killers. These lively youngsters have a dream, they want to solve the crime and become national heroes. But after witnessing one of the gruesome murders firsthand the gang soon realizes that far from helping the police, they have become their prime suspects.
Their only other problem - they are now also being hunted by the real killers as well.
Kahn is one of those 'been there, done that' types. He leads a delightfully chaotic life as dad, husband, writer, gardener, and DIY dabbler. He’s kept ant farms, tropical fish, and even a school hamster, which, much to his embarrassment, escaped over the summer hols never to be seen again. He’s built ponds that disappointingly only attracted gnats, but successfully raised 27 Rhode Island Red hens until a fox came a calling one night and put an end to the enterprise. He currently has two cats—one of whom routinely goes AWOL for months at a time.
Kahn pours all this joyful mayhem into his books, which are spooky-but-fun and full of vampires, werewolves, hungry slugs, and talking critters. His stories are more Scooby-Doo than Stephen King, and so are perfect for kids and anyone young at heart.
His latest books (penned under the name Khan - yes, that's how zany he is), include Little Mouse With The Big Mouth, a wild mouse adventure for children aged 7–10 years. It's about truth-telling, friendship, and self-sacrifice. Meanwhile, The Witch of a Thousand Needles is a dark fairytale set in olden days Japan and is perfect for the more adventurous reader.
Who is after whom and who is bungling a perfectly fascinating investigation and while we’re at it, what is really going on? Someone is responsible for a gruesome murder spree that has the citizens of New Forest afraid of their own shadows and fearing for their very lives. Even the police are clueless, okay, seriously, one officer in particular is totally clueless and not having any clues is not helping. It may take a group of clever, yet clueless young boys to unravel the mystery of these grizzly murders, but can they do so before they are chased by both the mysterious killers and the local police?
Vincent and his friends were having a camp-out, but from the shadows came the hungry growling and howling and death. Do they report what they witnessed? Do they cover up what they know and carry on? Will the police believe their story of monsters or will they be written off as overzealous or even as possible suspects? How do they stay one step ahead of a bumbling detective who is looking for an easy solution that is politically positive AND one step ahead of the mystery shadow monsters out to silence them forever?
Who are THE NIGHTWALKERS and where did they come from? Enter the sometimes scary, sometimes “Keystone cops” world of J.A. Kahn and follow Vincent and his gang as they go from amateur sleuths looking to be famous to prime suspects and prime targets in an otherworldly game of death.
J.A. Kahn takes terror to a new level and police procedurals to a new low in this dark, yet sometimes comical tale of death as the hounds from Hell lead the law and Vincent on a twisted chase that will have them tripping over each other, an event I place squarely on the shoulders of the law. Extremely entertaining and clever writing that borders on dizzying at times!

This is an enjoyable YA horror/mystery with very pronounced comedic elements, but at its core, it's all horror.
I couldn't help but feel the elements of Stephen King's It combined with Inspector Cluso, young kids on the track of a real horror butting heads against absolutely idiotic and bumbling law enforcement. This makes up a very significant portion of the tale, and it gets very dark even through all the amazing incompetence. I kept expecting a moment where the kids would uncover the masked villain who'd say that they'd have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those darn kids... but no, the horror is real, the killers are real, and the incompetence feels absolutely real.
The only people with a clue are the kids, but that's a pretty usual key to these tales. The gulf between the adults and the kids is what makes this stand out stronger than the competition. All the adults are written with broad strokes and tragedy follows despite the humor.
But this is only a part of the tale. We also get deep into the other side of the tale. Vampires. No one believes or wants to believe... and that's fine with them. Still, there's a real tragedy and a long story in this house, too.
Later, all the elements will clash and this was probably the most satisfying part of the tale. So much death for such an otherwise funny horror. Maybe that's the point!
Thanks to the author for providing me an ARC! It was a blast.
It took me a minute to get into this story, but once I did, I was hooked. I tore through this like my kids and a pack of oreos. It’s considered a “teen” book, but there is plenty of action for adults to enjoy as well.
I loved how the main characters didn’t seem like they were the popular kids. It made them easier to identify with and in some ways, reminded me of my own childhood except when we went vampire hunting, we didn’t find any. It does show a good example of how kids are regularly not taken seriously when it comes to telling those in charge things aren’t right. The bond between the kids that is one of the things I miss about being a kid. It’s hard to make those kinds of friends as adults.
While fairly lighthearted, there are a few scenes that really bummed me out. Just when I really got to liking someone, something would happen. Every time I thought things were going to go right for these kids, they went horribly wrong. I loved how many twists and turns there were, and I was always kept guessing.
Plenty of action and mystery to keep me happy. I did feel bad for the detective guy though. He was dopey but it seemed like he had good intentions. He was kind of like the detective that Steve Martin played in the Pink Panther lol. I also appreciated the link to Kahn’s other book, Self Defense Against Vampires, which I also enjoyed immensely.
This really is a great story. Plenty of things to keep your attention without giving away all the secrets at once. You don’t have to have read Self Defense Against Vampires to know what is going on in this story, but I do recommend reading it at some point just to get a bit more info.
Hooked from the start. Vampires, murder, mystery what more could you ask for. An action packed read full of twists and turns. Great for those that enjoy mysteries with a paranormal twist. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who like YA books. I can't wait to see what will happen next.
I really had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book. I suppose I was expecting a more serious horror based story but I was pleasantly taken by surprise at the humour laced throughout. The humour made this story quite a lighthearted and easy read. I would describe this book as a fun and enjoyable read overall.
The Nightwalkers has a very unique story line, which is difficult to achieve. I'd give it 5 stars, but some of the conversations between the main characters aren't things you'd hear kids say naturally. Overall pretty good.
This took me awhile to get through but not because I didn't like it!! One of the better YA Vampire novels I read. I appreciated the story being told with the group of kids involved at the core, it was like Stranger Things with Vampires. The main detective was a little naive which was frustrating at times but his character ended up being good for the plot. The second half and "showdown" ended up being my favorite. The scene was set up well and the imagery made me feel like I was there. I also appreciated the humor throughout the book and loved that the author wove himself in as a mention as well as references to his other book.
Thank you to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Don't let the cover fool you, this is in no way a "Scooby gang mystery"!! This book is definitely meant for readers aged young adults and up!! I was hooked for the very beginning and could not stop flipping the pages until I knew how it ended...I devoured this book in one sitting!! There were plenty of horror elements mixed with humor that equally balanced each other out. And of course mystery....lots and lots of mystery and clues!! The ending took me by surprise, which I admit is hard to do since I've been reading horror/mystery since I was 6 years old.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. A review, I'm afraid, that was a longer time coming than anticipated. The pacing is quick, but for whatever reason, this book didn't grab me and pull me along until the midpoint. I think it's because what felt like a sprinting pace to me at the start turned out to just be the warmup jog. But that is my personal opinion - other readers, especially the target audience, will probably enjoy the rapid-fire pace.
I definitely loved the ideas behind this and some of the description really stood out - like Watkins' tale of the night Rupert Mahoy was born. Also, poor Mahoy. It's a shame how long it took him to reach his true potential.
I definitely reacted plenty of times to how the police handled themselves, how the kids handled themselves...sometimes grumbling, sometimes amused, sometimes flabbergasted. Also, I wanted more of Gwen.
Thank you to J.A.Kahn for the chance to read this.
The Nightwalkers is a YA horror mystery. It follows a group of young boys who are determined to solve the unexplained murders that are happening in the New Forest. The residents are scared, and the police have no idea what is happening or who is involved. It’s up to the boys to solve this mystery.
The book is well written but did take a little while to get into it, but I was hooked once it got going. I wasn’t too sure about the characters at first, but they grew on me by the end.
This wasn’t a particularly scary read, but it was fun and action-packed. Also, it was fun and action-packed. Also, it’s full of vampires, murder, and mayhem, which I enjoyed very much.
A big thank you to J. A. Kahn, thank you for reaching out and sending me a digital copy of the book. These are my honest and unbiased thoughts, and I am sharing them voluntarily.
