- What it's like to daily bet hundreds of thousands of dollars working for some of the largest professional gamblers in Las Vegas?
- How to spend a summer house sitting one of the biggest stars in the worlds 11,000 square-foot mansion- without an invitation from it's celebrity owner.
-Whether the life of crime- specifically, running a shoplifting ring in a middle America mall- pays?
- What causes a son to finally say enough is enough...and decide "Today is the day I am going to kill my dad" Comedian Brandt Tobler has the answers in this funny, touching and sometimes downright unbelievable memoir of a small town Wyoming-kid turned "mall-fia" don, turned nationally touring comic.
This book is written by a stand up comedian that takes you through tragedy after tragedy on it’s path to the funny! Will it make you laugh? Eventually. Will it make you cry? Probably. But I hope it will also make you smile, dream, and reflect, while simultaneously inspiring you to never stop chasing your dreams, even if its your very own family that is constantly trying to derail them. Brandt tells his life story with candor, detailing the many pit stops, wrong turns, crazy connections and lucky breaks he experienced along the way to his comedy career, all while trying to balance a toxic relationship with his jailbird dad. In the pages will make you laugh (he better-it's his job!) and believe as he does when it comes to defining family, blood isn't always thicker then water.
Highly entertaining memoir, but I’m conflicted about purchasing and enjoying a book written by someone so morally corrupt. Just like any great memoir, I found myself rooting for Brandt to overcome the challenges of his youth and the hardships he faced. He seems likable and his sense of humor is what makes the book great. And yet, he stole from almost every employer that ever hired him and tried to kill his father (for real!). He acknowledges that a lot of his life choices were awful (particularly his taste in friends and girlfriends) but he didn’t seem at all remorseful about all his theft. His sense of entitlement was completely obnoxious; as if “real” people weren’t harmed by his actions.
But a goodreads rating isn’t about how much you like an author, it’s about how much you like the book. And I had a hard time putting this one down.

Uh oh. I heard Brandt Tobler discuss his book on a podcast, and he was funny, charming and absolutely delightful. I was excited to buy the book, and didn't wait for his reading to come out on Audible. The bad news is that the author's writing comes across as one-dimensional. Without Tobler's actual charming voice, the book reads like an adolescent memoir, and one where the adolescent has a particularly stunted vocabulary. My suggestion is to listen to Tobler live, or via audio book. The written product is not worth your time. (I believe he wants to write another book, so I hope he gets the assistance of a ghostwriter for that one.)
I love Brandt's point of view! He is a natural storyteller and his life has no shortage of material. It is cheesy as hell to say this, but it is true: I laughed, I cried, and I cheered him on. So many people have let him down in life, but he isn't bitter and has not let it darken him. He is the type of guy you know will lead you on a crazy adventure and he is also the guy that gives his last buck to a man who has none. I cannot wait for his next chapters, but in the meantime he puts out great podcast content and is out there doing standup! Someone get this man a show!! FXX, hello??
Seriously couldn't put it down. Fell asleep with it out n my hands twice and when I woke up I would read some more. Finished it in three days. Growing up knowing Brandt, I knew some of his back story already, but Brandt has a way of writing that flows and takes the serious and dangerous things in life and gives them his special amusing twist. He always had a way of telling a story and making you laugh; this book does that and more! Go pick it up and learn how to KEEP GOING!!
Having seen Brandt live, I was eager to read this book which gave more detail to the hilarious stories he told on stage. This book was filled with crazy tales that you wouldn't think we're true, but there's no way they could be made up. I had empathy for Brandt in regards to his dad, laughed at his Mallfia adventures, and was shocked by his Las Vegas stories.
When I read that line, I knew exactly where things were going with "dad." That's exactly how a dysfunctional POS will attempt to control you. I enjoyed the book & look forward to the next.
This is quite a ride. Great story. Heard him on a podcast and had to check it out. It did not disappoint. I feel like he missed an opportunity to be funnier, but there are plenty of laughs, esp the audio bloopers.
Couldn’t set this down! Incredibly well written- such an easy read filled with so many ups and downs- laughs and tears. Wonderful from start to finish.
You know someone but don't really know. You know some of the stories. The ones that made you laugh but then you learn new ones that had you scared for your friend.
