Fans of Carolyn Brown’s THE LADIES’ ROOM and LONG, HOT TEXAS SUMMER will be delighted by this fun, fast-paced novella about finding love in unexpected places
Be careful what you wish for…
When she was eight years old, Jessica found an old bottle on the beach and made three that she wouldn’t always be the tallest kid in the class, that she would find a big conch shell, and that she would finally meet her father someday. Jessica’s wishes never came true—no other kids ever matched her height and she only ever found a small conch shell at the beach—but twenty years later, when she finds her mother’s old love letters, she has a chance to make the third wish come true.
Jessica travels to Florida to find her father but their reunion is interrupted by his arrogant junior business partner, Rocky Rycroft. Indignant, Jessica goes back to her Texas hometown and is surprised that Rocky follows her home. He explains he’s been sent by her father’s family learn more about Jessica, but all of Jessica’s friends insist his interest is more personal than that.
Jessica was looking for her father, not love. Could she now possibly have both?
Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!
Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.
I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.
I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.
Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!
I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.
This was a great concept for a book. I wish they story was more developed and was more lengthy. Everything seemed rushed and quick. Overall good book, but could have been so much better.
I think this book had a lot of promising qualities. I loved the story. I liked the ending too. Just seemed too fast. I'm also a big stickler for grammar and spelling. The editing in this book gave it a lower rating for me. When I saw here spelled like hear, it lost a lot of points unfortunately.
The Third Wish: A Novella is by Carolyn Brown. This is a cute story and short enough to be read quickly. It brings to light the saying, “Be Careful for what you wish for.” The story is told by Jessica. Jessica and Ashley work together at a realty company which their Mother had own. They are half sisters who grew up together with their Mother who was a single mom. When they were small, Jessica always wondered who her Father was and where he was. They knew Ashley’s Father had died and had pictures of him in the house. There was no mention of Jessica’s father, not even a picture. They had gone to the beach with their Mother and had found a bottle floating in the water. Mother said it was magic and if you rubbed it, you got three wishes. Ashley wished for easy college, no rain for vacation, and a handsome prince. All her wishes eventually came true. Jessica wished to find a big conch shell, would see her Father, and would fall in love and live happily ever after. She did find a conch shell the next day; but it was little. So far, the others had not come true. Twenty years later, when their Mother died in a car accident, the girls were going through her things when they found some letters. One stack was from Ashley’s father and the other was from Edward Ronin. After reading the letters, Jessica found he was her Father and had evidently never known about her. He had left her Mother for an old girlfriend and broke up in a letter. Jessica decided to go to Florida to at least see him. She headed for Panama City Beach, Florida. What will she find when she gets there? Will her Father be all she was looking for or will he end up being a toad?
she finally finds out who her father is and goes to see him in Florida. He doesn't know about her and a family friend thinks she is interested in blackmail. The story was cute but the lack of editing drove me crazy.
A quick and enjoyable novella by Carolyn Brown. Jessica goes looking for her father after her mother's death. She finds Rocky, who isn't accepting of her at first.
Her sister, Ashley, was eighteen the summer that their mother took them to the beach in Pensacola, Florida, a trip that was Ashley’s high school graduation present and combined birthday present.
Jessica was eight.
“Oh. My. Goodness!” Mama squealed. “What is it, Mama”? “I saw the genie. He smiled at me and waved as he headed for the snow-cone shop down the strip”. “And we each get three wishes.”
Ashley wished for college to be easy, for no rain the rest of our vacation, and for a handsome prince to come into her life and sweep her away to live happily ever after. It took a few years but her wishes all came true.
Mama asked that her daughters, Ashley and Jessica—that would be me—would find happiness; that she would live long enough to see her grandchildren, and for the three of us to always respect and love each other. Her wishes also came true. Ashley and I were both happy. Mama got to see two grandchildren and watch them grow up to be fine young men, and we really did all three love each other.
Jessica rubbed the bottle a few extra times because she wanted to really see the genie pop back in the bottle, but he wouldn’t show himself a second time. So, she made her choices: the first was to find a big, huge conch shell the next day. And the second wish was to see her father. The third was that someday she’d fall in love and live happily ever after like the princess in the Cinderella movie. She found a conch shell the next day. It wasn’t big but and it still sits on a shelf, along with the bottle, in her living room as a reminder of the good times they shared that summer.
Twenty years later, her second and third wishes still hadn’t come to fruition. Then on a Thursday afternoon, a deputy sheriff came to their real estate agency with the news that their mother had been killed in a car wreck south of Jefferson, Texas. A semi-driver had lost control and slammed into her little smart car that she whipped around town in. She and the driver were both gone before the ambulance arrived on the scene.
Cleaning out her mother’s belongings she discovers her father was Edward Rollin and he’d written half the letters she’d read; the other half her mother had sent to him. Their letters ~ intimate.
She sensed the pain her mother must’ve felt when she’d gotten the last letter from him. She found it in the box along with all the ones that she had written to him. He had returned all of her letters to her, but she must have loved him too much to return his. He’d thrown her away for another woman, and there was a possibility she had a half-sister or brother somewhere in Florida. Her mother had always evaded her questions about her father.
Jessica sets out to Panama City Beach, Florida, in search of her biological father, an encounter that is greeted with a great deal of suspicion and accusations.
Her half-sister Tamara confronts her at her hotel to satisfy her curiosity after her father had called a family conference. Their mother knew that he’d been seeing another woman during the time they were dating. Presumably they’d had an argument and had split when he and her mother were together. Edward had promised Eva that it was over before they got married. “Neither of them expected a daughter from that little fling to come walking into our lives after all these years later.”
“Fling! Maybe I did want to slap her after all. Her mother had loved Edward”. (Tamara and Jessica’s birthdays are a month apart). Their conversation was fairly innocuous before going their separate ways.
Rocky follows her home to Jefferson, tasked by his sister-in-law, Tamara to confirm that Jessica isn’t destitute. Following the birth of her baby, she experienced a case of the baby blues, confident that she’s led a life of privilege, yet assuming Jessica might have been raised as Little Orphan Annie.
Some events were implausible.
We witness Jessica and Rocky’s wedding, with her father Edward, his wife Eva and her half-sister Tamara in attendance mending fences and creating memories.
A short story with likable characters and engaging plot. When she was 8 years old, Jessica Graham found an empty bottle at the beach when her mother took her sister Ashley and her on a vacation to Florida to celebrate Ashley's birthday and high school graduation. They all made 3 wishes. Mama and Ashley got their 3 wishes, but 20 years later, Jessica is still waiting for her third wish. After the death of her mother, she decides to go after it. And eventually not only is her wish granted, but so much more.
I read an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.com The story was originally published in 2017. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
This novella is a short version of Brown's usual feisty southern woman. Raised by a single mom, received her business degree and works at her realtor office, Jessica had three wishes as a girl. She wanted to meet her father, and wanted to live happily ever after. After making what many people would consider a real mistake, Jessica goes back to Jefferson, Texas to her normal life. Them young man she met in Florida follows her back to spy on her but ends up falling in love with her. She feels the same.
8-year-old Jessica Graham is now 28 and still hoping for her 3rd wish to come true since 1 and 2 were a bust.
Her Mama was right you might not want what you get if wishes ever came true.
In true contemporary romance style though by the time this story ends that sage advice no longer matters, the outcome for Jessica is more than she ever wished for in the first place.
Some things were rushed but as a whole a charming fairytale-come-true like modern romance that left me smiling and once again in love with the authors use of her imagination to craft a lovely story.
A quick story about a young woman, Jessica, who had a desire to meet her father. After her mother dies, she finds correspondence between her mother and d her unknowns father. She heads off to meet him, unbeknownst to him, she temps in his office for the morning and runs into Rocky again, who later becomes the love of her life.
Carolyn Browns characters have these quite boisterous arguments between characters. I’ve read 2 stories now and in both, the characters are quite blunt.

Sometimes I just need a sweet, happy ending romance to take me away from the horrible events of our daily world. Carolyn Brown always delivers. I agree with the other reviewers that the plot seems rushed and things move awfully quickly, but the book is labeled a novella so we really can't complain. Thank you, Carolyn Brown, for providing stories that bring both a tear and a smile and some happy thoughts when they are much needed.
The Third Wish is a novella included with A Chance Inherited. Jessica and her sister Ashley are traumatized at the loss of their dear mother in an auto accident. While cleaning out her home, a box filled with old letters between their mom and a mysterious Eddie are found. Ashley knows her father was a war hero but Jessica has no idea who her father is. These letters are the key and will lead Jessica on quite a journey.
At 13 chapters, this novella is a complete and refreshing story.
Another short novella since I had this time like 3 hours left of that dang subscription. I mean 20 hours is just insane! Too short, but it was a good deal
Jessica finds out who her father is and goes to find him. She meets an arrogant SoB (not her dad, just his colleague). Then they meet again. Sorry Jessica, I know he was hot and then turned nice, but he was such an ahole in the beginning so I would have made him suffer some.
When a young girl finds a bottle on the shore, she makes three wishes! Years go by and she is losing belief in the Genie granting her three wishes! Then suddenly the possibility of each one becoming true, as a chance encounter on a beach in Florida! When Jessica returns to Texas she's not sure of the future, but something has happened that she's excited to follow to the end!
Definitely worth 5* this short story about Rocky and Jessica brought tears to my eyes.... this story although way to short for my liking was very romantic and entertaining finding love while searching for her father great reading wish there was an epilogue to see into their future. Happy Reading!
I got through a few chapters and simply couldn't get past the fact that so many things were spelled incorrectly or capitalized where it shouldn't be, etc. The last few books of Carolyns were wonderful. Id be happy to take the job of editing, Ms. Brown. The person who took the helm this time failed you.
Rocky and Jessica first meet on a beach in Florida, when she accidentally trips him. She’s in Florida to see her father for the first time. Things don’t go as planned and Jess returns home to Jefferson, Texas. Next thing we know, Rocky is in Texas. Why? No spoilers, so grab your copy and fall in love with small town living.
I enjoyed the book, but wanted more. As little girls, Ashley & Jessie go to the beach in Florida & stumble upon a message in a bottle granting 3 wishes. Jessie wishes to find a conch shell, meet her dad & find her true love. Jessie & Ashley’s mom dies & Jessie finds old letters hidden away that sends her on a search that delivers more than she dreamed or wished for.
Disappointing; not one of Carolyn's better efforts.
The one thing I so enjoy about Carolyn Brown's books is how she develops her characters in depth. Third Wish completely misses here. The plot is simple, and derivative. I barely like any of the characters. This book is a big miss. Try one of her earlier works.
Cute little novella. I enjoy the coziness and Hallmark-esque feel of Brown's books. A nice palette cleanser after denser reads. Because it is a novella -- less than 100 pages -- nothing is particularly well developed and everything happens much too quickly for reality. Still, a cute little story about genies, wishes, families, and love.
This is the best book I have read by Carolyn Brown! I absolutely love it. The drama, the passion, the fairy tale like parts. It was completely beautiful and had me glued from the very first chapter! This book gave me hope for more of Carolyn Brown's books. Although this was a short story, I think there is still hope.
This author keeps me interested and describes her characters in detail . You are not sure what will happen so you need to keep on reading usually finish book same day .
This was the first Carolyn Brown that didn't really resonate with me. I suppose it may have been because I've gotten used to her sweet romance and this one was not so "sweet" (it had sex scenes). This may have been the first CB read that didn't receive five stars from me.
Jessica goes to Florida on an impulse and Rocky trips over her feet on the beach, and therein lies the beginning of an intriguing story. She meets her birth father and a half sister. Upon returning to Texas,Rocky shows up and love develops.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I ended up staying up late every night to finish this book as quickly as possible. You might be surprised by some of the turns in the book npbut you will be delighted.
I always look forward to humor, romance, spunky female lead, and handsome male lead in a believable story held together by family and this book was every bit and more.
Once again sassy women reign. 3 wishes and years waiting on them to come true, but wishes are worth waiting for. This story went by too fast- enjoyed the visit with Jessica & Rocky.
Jessica made three wishes that she wouldn't be the tallest kid in her class, would find a Big conch shell on the beach and lastly to finally meet her father someday. This audiobook was cute, romantic, funny.
This was a fun and quick story. It was somewhat predictable but in a good way. It is a typical romance story with a happy ending. I enjoyed reading it for that reason. It just felt too short.
