#2 for the #MonthofMonstrosities tag!

You will gain an unmistakable mark on your left shoulder after your Transition. This will be proof of the fate you were burdened with since long before you were born Castile.

Castile Glass was born to a family of vampires. At a young age, she witnessed her parents' murder by an enemy wolf. In order to keep her safe, Castile is admitted to a vampire Academy. But getting to the Academy poses a risk itself, as many of the fledglings never make it past the thick and dangerous forest encasing its location.

For three years, Castile stays at the Academy in relative safety. In that time, she receives the mark of her element, and transforms into a full-fledged vampire. But when the truth of her destiny is revealed, she realizes that her life, and so much more is at stake. She must decide to stay at the Academy and risk her life, or flee and try to escape the imposing threat.

-------------------------------

Heading into this read, I was expecting something with lots of vampire/werewolf battle. However, there wasn't much of that at all. The book read more like a journal of day-to-day occurrences, rather than a purpose-driven plot. When the scene between the opposing sides actually did happen, it was so unexpected that it almost didn't seem to fit into the plot.

There are lots of parallels between Death by Wolf Bite and the Twilight saga. The main initial difference between the main characters is that Castile is born as a fledgling, while Belle was human, then became a vampire later on. Obviously, there are werewolves--who are naturally against the vampires. Yet, there were the random few who decided to pledge themselves to protecting the pregnant Castile from some of their evil pack-members (sound familiar?) A refreshing bit was that no love-triangles existed between the vampire -vampire and vampire-werewolf characters. Monogamy--yes!

There was an addition of elemental abilities among the vampires which, I thought was a rather interesting twist. But, I didn't really understand how these powers worked, or why a vampire would even need elemental powers?

The vampires in this book were more like your everyday humans, just drinking blood from blood bags, or, drinking blood-infused coffee. They lived among humans without any issues, could walk outside in broad daylight, and didn't "quarrel" much with their counterparts. It was the last way I would have expected vampires to be depicted. I'm not saying this is necessarily bad, but I think the book lacked an over paranormal essence.

My biggest issue with this book was the grammar. The redundant terminology, excessive sentences stating the same thing several times over, and plot progression posed as distractions for myself while reading. There were several times on one page that a descriptive term was used too often, which made the text choppy and pulled my focus away from the plot itself. I understand that writing a book is an enormous endeavor (which I thoroughly appreciate)--every author has their own writing style, and every reader ingests that style in different ways. As the reader, I could not settle into the writing style, and feel there was a connective flow throughout.

Overall, I think this book (and series for that matter) has potential. However, for myself, I couldn't settle into the plot and meld with the writing style.

Vulgarity: Some.
Sexual content: There is a scene of intimacy, but it is not explicit.
Violence: Some.

It is a mysterious book with a dark theme. A book about a haunted world of the dead. The characters are convincing. The story evokes suspense as the plot revolves around vampires and wolf-bites and nightmares.
