A rare book on the not often discussed topic of Indian army involvement in Srilanka in late 80s with its IPKF. A must read. Written with a gripping narrative by someone who was in action.
The Beckoning Isle is a gripping tale about Capt Hariharan of Special Forces, Indian Army and LTTE commander Silvam.
Despite being a Special Forces' officer himself, the author keeps the narrative very unbiased and let the reader take sides. Despite the setting of the story being a war torn land, the author adds humour at the most unexpected places and ensures the plot doesn't get too heavy for the readers.
Extremely gripping and brutally honest narration.
A must read for anyone who loves war stories and looks forward to an exciting narration of the IPKF- LTTE standoff.
One heck of a book. Eloquent and precise, while upholding a wonderful technique of knitting the story through the leads of the opposing camps. Best efforts are made to maintain objectivity. Better gear up for the author will take you deep down the Lankan jungles. Would have given a 5star hands down albeit the fact that I found it difficult to understand the author's story weaving from Colonel Silvam's side.
It's written in a very clear and easy to understand way, and reads like a fictional story. A page turner, it talks about a war that few Indians know about. Both sides (Indian Army & LTTE) had a clear exposition, which gives the reader a very balanced perspective about things. A must read for anyone willing to get into the military genre or know more about the tragic conflict that took place in the dense jungles of Sri Lanka.
A book that more than anything else shows you the awful side of war that civilians are oblivious to . It's a wonderful book , as it comes from one of our Forces' finest officer who served as a part of IPKF in Sri Lanka . The book showcases the emotions in their most raw form , that is both beautiful and spine chilling .
Wonderfully fast paced tale. So nice to read a story around a conflict that was so important to the Indian army but was as quickly forgotten by the country.
I read this book immediately after reading this author's book on Kashmir. Similar stuff but I found the Kashmir book better. But a good read all the same.
