And so it begins, the virus enters on the quiet feet of The Innocents. It invades each and every one of us. But, they say, plagues are like fires. At some point, they burn themselves out. Or not.
FEAR AND RUMOR CAN BE FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE VIRUS ITSELF.
A new dystopian, post-apocalyptic fiction series from author Bobby Akart (The Blackout Series, The Boston Brahmin series and the Prepping for Tomorrow series). The events depicted in The Pandemic Series are fictional. They are, however, based upon historical fact.
International bestselling author, Bobby Akart, one of America's favorite storytellers, delivers up-all-night thrillers to readers in 245 countries and territories worldwide. He's achieved Amazon Top 5 Author status in both fiction and non-fiction genres, Amazon Kindle All Star and Top 50 Amazon Author (#35) and Top 25 Best Selling Book on Amazon Charts (Yellowstone #25). "He's right up there with James Patterson, David Baldacci, Brad Thor and others that write thrillers. To me he actually surpasses them.” He has written more than 80 novels in the disaster, survival, medical and political thriller genres.
I will freely admit that I love a fast paced disaster/apocalypse/dystopian novel or series and the Pandemic series by Bobby Akart did not disappoint.
The Pandemic series continues in book 2, the Innocents, with the pandemic spreading across the globe. The president is doing what most presidents always do, lie and obvuscate for his own gain; the CDC and epidemiologists are scrambling to figure it out and come up with a plan, while trying to warn people at the same time and being dismissed by aformentioned politicians; Hunter and the DTRA are fighting to stop the terrorists from further spreading it in the US, although, even finding the leader of this operation is now a day late and dollar short; Hunter and Mac begin prepping for the eventuality that they will have to bug in; and, society and civilization are rapidly crashing at levels paralleling the virus' exponential death toll.
This here has been probably the most realistic depiction of a widespread bio-terror attack by a modified strain that I've encountered. It is also a great reference as to what someone could, and probably should, do in the event of something like this happening. Akart's use of people in this very field have given a stark realism to the story that most SHTF/pandemic story authors fall short on. There's enough detail, historical info, procedural info, and scientific knowledge contained to make it an above-average novel, worthy of its praise.
Again, the author wrote this series in 2017, and the subsequent real events in the world leave me with chills when reading this.
In book 1, we saw the beginning of the virus. Mac wanted the threat to be widely known but the Government didn't want to. But things are getting worse. The virus has been diagnosed as the Pneumonic Plague but it has also been changed! It is now antibiotic resistant and there doesn't seem to be a cure. Mac is working with Hunter to try to find the cause and a way to either cure it or inoculate against it before it's too late.
The author has created one heck of a book. The level of detail is amazing and the amount of research he did shows. It's frightening to read how quickly it spreads. Also the way it's spread is ruthless and extremely scary!!! It really made me think and made me evaluate handshakes etc.
While the book isn't action packed, it's rich in detail and extremely well developed. The characters are all well written and you can't help but love them. Mac is trying to do all she can to find some way to help, but she is put under the bus so to speak and is blamed for the CDC not reacting in time. So Hunter, while trying to find the terrorists responsible for the outbreak, finds her another position and place to work. All the while both are trying to prepare themselves for the inevitable outcome.
I really like both Hunter and Mac. They just work well together!! I so love seeing their relationship grow and develop. I also can't wait to see more from Mac's mum and dad!! They sound intriguing and interesting. Definitely looking forward to getting to know them.
In all, a truly terrifying look into what could happen. It opens your eyes and makes you see things differently. Amazing book and I need book 3 yesterday!!! :)
This one here is one of the best works of Akart I've read yet. Every bit of this book was interesting and, frankly, exceeded my expectations. The pandemic is spreading across the globe; the president is doing what most presidents always do, lie and obvuscate for his own gain; the CDC and epidemiologists are scrambling to figure it out and come up with a plan, while trying to warn people at the same time and being dismissed by aformentioned politicians; Hunter and the DTRA are fighting to stop the terrorists from further spreading it in the US, although, even finding the leader of this operation is now a day late and dollar short; Hunter and Mac begin prepping for the eventuality that they will have to bug in; and, society and civilization are rapidly crashing at levels paralleling the virus' exponential death toll.
This here has been probably the most realistic depiction of a widespread bioterror attack by a modified strain that I've encountered. And, of course, I love the thought of prepping with an unlimited budget, even if I can't do it myself.
This is book 2 of a four book series and the characters are just as wooden, the science as dodgy and the writing as stilted and unemotional as in book 1.
The author has misunderstood (or perhaps has poorly described) the difference between an enzyme and a bacterium. The 'genius' doctor doesn't seem to realise that a contagious disease can be spread before symptoms show - they go to CostCo and petrol stations when the local hospitals are filling up with hundreds of plague victims, and no-one is wearing gloves or masks. The author doesn't understand the difference between "the world" and "America", for example "the world" is not watching CNN and listening to Rush Limbaugh (whoever he is...) as pompously claimed. Naturally, the main characters are phenomenally rich, attractive and fit, but they have a strange relationship and continually laugh at things which are patently not funny.
The writing is poor - very little character development and almost everyone is a walking talking cliche. There are lots of misused words such as tantamount when he should have used paramount, admonished instead of advised, and ill instead of sick (the ill patients; the ill man; the ill zookeeper). Jarring. There is a great deal of info-dumping, especially lots of detail on various US government departments and agencies. This series has a distinctly right-wing feel to it.
What a terrible start. If this is a medical thriller and is supposed to have SOME degree of credibility, could the Author at least have the Colorado River draining into the right water body? Or could the Author at least get the name of the Rio Grande correct? You apparently have some pathetic or ignorant proofreaders. Or both.
One only gets ONE chance to make a good impression.
Sometimes I need a few days after finishing a book to write a good review. Sometimes this means that the book was terrible and sometimes it means that the book was amazing. In the case of The Innocents, it was the latter. Bobby Akart has really cornered the market with his mixture of medical thriller, post-apocalyptic, and dystopian series 'The Pandemic Series'. I think that this series has something for almost anyone to enjoy.
The Innocents continues where Beginnings left off throwing us right back into a world that is on the verge of an incredibly serious and deadly pandemic. It seems that no one will be safe.
The "funny" review line that I was able to come out with for this book was, 'it must be nice to have Bruce Wayne money when the world is on the brink of collapse'. I thought that numerous times since one of our main characters has a lot of zeros in his bank account (on the correct side of the period). Honestly, I thought this would bother me, but to watch how someone would prepare with basically unlimited funds was a point of view I've rarely seen in post-apocalyptic books.
The love story between the two main characters could have been cheesy, and a few times it was, but if you listen to real love stories of your grandparents or parents -- you'll find some of the same cheesiness. Love can be cheesy at times and when it's written in a book that's about the world on the brink -- it could feel out of place, but I think that Akart hits the nail on the head. It was the right amount of gushiness without going over.
Akart is able to pray on our fears as readers and Americans. He is taking stories that are out of the news and writing them into a fictional story that could read like tomorrows headline. Reading about things that you are already scared of, whether you know it or not, is always scarier. He can plant an idea in your brain. You'll stop reading, but that idea will grow to cause you to think about this book long after you've put it down.
The Innocents will be a book that I remember for a long time. The plague that Akart has written about and described for two books is utterly terrifying. It's incredibly researched and I cannot find any holes in his plots. This disease would absolutely annihilate the population if it was released in the world today. Preppers and regular joes alike wouldn't stand a chance against this disease.
Overall, if you couldn't tell from above, I really enjoyed this story and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the rest of the books. Akart is a master of suspense, keeping us on the edge of our seats. But, he does it with fact-based fiction that would scare even the most hardened readers.
I received a free copy of this book. It has not affected my review of my opinion.

An outbreak of a seriously dangerous pathogen is scary.
When that outbreak occurs in multiple, widely spaced locations and begins to spread, it's frightening. When the spread of the disease is intentional, the intent being to kill as many people as possible around the world, it becomes terrifying. When there is no cure for the disease, no vaccine to prevent it, and no antibiotics to slow it down, it becomes hopeless and hopeless people become irrational.
Dr. Mackenzie Hagar of the CDC was present in Guatemala when the first outbreak occurred. There were no survivors in the village, nothing but corpses to answer her many questions.
Nathan Hunter worked for the DTRA, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. He was in Guatemala investigating connections between an apartment fire, a missing scientist and his family and an explosion at a BSL4 lab containing some of the worst of the epidemic bacteria. How did that connect with the Guatemalan village? Hunter was determined to find out.
Mac and Hunter met in Guatemala, but their investigations kept them close and a relationship developed. As their relationship grew, so did the outbreak. The disease was determined to be a pneumonic plague variant, antibiotic resistant. As more outbreaks appeared around the world, the outbreaks became epidemic, hurrying toward a pandemic.
The premise of the story is torn from tomorrow's headlines. The characters may be fictional, but the terrifying dangers exposed in the story are all too real. The action is fast-paced, grabbing your attention with both fists and shaking you to the core. Before this story concludes, you will pray that this summer's blockbuster read is only fiction!
Fortunately, the author also includes some advice on preparations you can make to help survive a pandemic as social order and man's basic humanity is overwhelmed by the need to survive. A brilliant author one wrote, "Never underestimate the basic depravity of humankind."
This story is a must read, both as a frighteningly good adventure, and as a handbook for survival in a world gone mad. I highly recommend this book and this series as high entertainment and necessary education!
On to Book #2, The Innocents. As I said in my review of Book #1, my reviews of this series will contain major spoilers so beware if you want to experience the surprises of this series firsthand. In Book #2 we see the ISIS bad guys launch their plan for global domination while also watching the protagonist’s warning be dismissed by a US administration focused on the upcoming presidential election. Maybe it’s just me, but I see major similarities between this series’ President Garcia and Richard M. Nixon. This book was also an enjoyable read. The tension of the ISIS plan being put into motion while the good guys are slowly piecing together the extent of the threat made for enjoyable summer reading. I have to admit, though, I started to scratch my head over the overall ISIS plan: the devout core of ISIS went into hiding along with their families while fanatical, indoctrinated operatives began spreading the super-bug around the world. Some of the things that bugged me: ISIS really thought that unleashing an airborne disease with seeming 100% mortality would leave their core membership unscathed; no one in ISIS drops a dime on this plan at any point in the planning or implementation stage; ISIS is this effective in moving hundreds or even thousands of operatives into the Western Hemisphere and no one notices; the implementation stage: no one gets cold feet and defects? The implementation of the plan was pretty insidious, but involved many, many pieces going perfectly with no one turning their coat. ISIS operatives, accepting that they would contract the disease, spread the superbug in refugee camps in Turkey amongst their coreligionists heading to Europe as well as amongst migrants in Central America heading to the US. Simultaneously, hundreds of operatives infiltrate the US via Mexico (most coming off a large cargo ship that turns off its transponder as it sails across the Caribbean) and spread the bug at malls, concerts, sporting events, even the Olympics being held in Atlanta. ISIS makes extensive use of US-born converts, especially women who participate in the plot along with their children, knowing that they and their children would die from the disease. Again, the perfect execution of this plan rather bothered me, but I rolled with it. One of the key players implementing this plan was the son of the ISIS second-in-command. He carried with him a large ISIS flag that he dreamed of hoisting over the White House once the plan is complete. While he does take some precautions to avoid the disease, he meets his comeuppance in a Denver-area mall at the hands of the male protagonist, Hunter, while watching his minions spray the disease on the ground floor. It sounds like I should have rated this book much lower than I did. I must emphasize that it is an enjoyable read if you don’t think too hard about what I outlined above. There are some good moments: Mac testifying before Congress about the dangers of this new disease while forces in the government work to stifle her warnings for fear of disrupting the Olympics and adversely impacting Nixon’s, I mean Garcia’s, chances of reelection. The implementation of the plot was really chilling on the surface and the governmental inaction rang true. Overall, I would again recommend book #2 of this series if you enjoy a SHTF read. For summer escapist reading, this series continues to work. For more serious reading, I offset this book with one on the Royal Flying Corps during the Battle of the Somme in WW1. {to be continued in my review of Book #3 – Level 6]
Just a few hours ago I found myself in another part of my house, in another family member’s bathroom. I was reaching forward with the intention of using their drinking cup when - I suddenly froze in place. Then, physically recoiled a bit. It honestly took me a few heartbeats to remember there’s no deadly bacteria or virus circling the globe. Yet..... THIS is how engaging this series is, and with book 2, it only got better! Akart’s storytelling skills are masterful. Albeit, on one or two occasions the imagination had to be stretched too far, even for apocalyptic fiction, as to draw the reader right out of the story. Well, at least this reader. One of the bothersome features was how long the two main characters remained out-and-about in society. I guess this bothered me to some extent as well in book 1. While everyone, everywhere was falling victim to the plague, our main characters (and crew) seemed to be able to walk about the world with impunity. Never even a concern voiced about dining out, going shopping (touching shopping carts!!), or being in a hundred other confined spaces and areas - such as strolling into a hospital. Or small hallway with a dead guy you know is infected. I dunno. That part, their “superhuman” immunity, simply as main characters was extremely distracting. Other than that, which may not faze other readers in the slightest, this series definitely gets in your head and under your skin! One of the brightest pandemic / bioterrorist series on the market today. I’m not sure four books will be enough - but I can’t wait to start reading book 3!
As we saw in book one of this series Beginnings, the world is being overcome by a disease so savage that it does not discriminate between any race. Culture, sex or age. All those who come in contact with an infected person will die! The pneumonic plague is one of the oldest and dangerous diseases ever to come into being and it is on its way to killing most of the world’s population with no cure or vaccine in sight! I am absolutely loving this series! Bobby Akart with his brilliant writing is taking us through the steps of what “could” happen to our world. His writing shows the depth of his research to bring us not just an entertaining story but information on what to do in the event we do face a pandemic in order to survive. The characters might not be real but seem to be and come to life on the pages. As many work to come up with a solution to the pandemic, people are dying by the thousands. Who will survive and will there be a last minute Hail Mary? You will have to read this outstanding story for yourself to find out the answers and I can tell you that you won’t be sorry! This is a series that I am recommending to all my friends and family without any hesitation.
So much more fast paced than the first book. However, the characters and their interactions still seem very amateur. The way I picture them in my head is as if they're in a low budget movie with poor scripts resulting them in being stiff and unnatural. It's, as, if, they're, robotic. I just can't get passed it.
And as much as I need to know what happens, I think I need some time from this series before I can fibish the books. It's impressive how much Akart clearly researched for the books, I just need his characters to be a little more engaging and realistic. Going back to the first book quickly, I'm not sure I know many people who could tell someone they met twice that they loved them with their entire being. It just all feels like a badly scripted movie and at the moment, I can't get past that.
The virus sweeping around the world now has the United States in it's sights. Using women and children to spread the virus is something only the depraved Jihadists would do. The US government by not taking the threat seriously enough when warned is now responsible for the suffering and death of millions. The throttle is wide open is this action packed, terror filled ride. Can a cure be found? Will this virus bring about the total eradication of the human race? This series is totally bone chilling in the fact that this could very well happen. Another awesome read. Now excuse me while I go and scour everything around me with bleach. I highly recommend you buy this series if you love horrifying tales.
The first book of this series was very intense as this one is. The author makes this a stand-alone novel as he outlines the events of book one as a prologue in this thriller. The investigation of the disease and trying to identify the ways to halt it, or to discover a vaccination for it, continue. The plague, as it now referred to, may have been created by jihadist terrorists, as several sneak into Los Angeles. Another remarkably well written story to spur your comfort zone as well as people's lives are turned upside down from fear. Another winner for Bobby Akart. I'm very proud of his abilities to write such thought provoking stories. We always learn something from his stories which are based on fact. Highly recommend.
This story just keeps getting better! Books 1 & 2 mesh together so well, the continuation into book 2 is flawless. It was like I just turned the page and kept reading. Tension is building as the U.S. of A.'s government decides the plague will not be a problem. Two people know the truth and have seen a village where everyone's dead from the altered plague virus that has no cure. Mac works for the C.D.C. in Atlanta. She knows that this virus cannot be contained. Hunter, a deep dark "fixer" in a no name part of the U.S. government. They know the truth and the devastation that is coming. Can they trust each other enough to help each other? One great tense read! Loved it!
THIS SERIES JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AS PANDEMIC: THE INNOCENTS PROVES IT
Bobby Akart has done it again with the 2nd book of this truly great series and I am so ready for #3. This book picks right back up with Mac & Hunter as Mac does what she can to find a cure or at least a vaccine and Hunter trying to track down the terrorists that set this in motion, with both hoping this doesn't become an Extinction event. This is definitely worth the 5 stars I posted and one book and series I highly recommend to everyone. Bobby Akart you are awesome and this series is just getting better...
This series is action packed a full of vital information, should an event like this happens. Fearless Mac is trying to find a cure, for a modified bug that leads to death, by the millions. Hunter, is her new boyfriend, within multiple Military attachments and qualifications. Can they save their family and freinds, AND find a cure for this deadly virus??? Hmmm, you'll have to read to find out!! Me?? I'm not so patiently waiting for the next 2 books in the series!!!
This is the stuff nightmares are made of. The fact that it's fiction doesn't even matter because this sort of thing could really happen. Bobby Akart has written an amazingly real scenario. I just hope, if in reality, this kind of thing actually happens, that I would have someone like Hunter on my side. He's smart and thinks ahead. I've become so enamored with these characters that I feel very deeply for them. I feel what they feel. And, that is mostly anger and fear. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.
I waited until I read all four in this series before I began to review. Knowing this could actually happen in today's world, make these books even more terrifying. With each book, I became more involved with the characters and Akart gave us more insight. A falling in love story in a time of world crisis, while millions die, leaves you hoping for the best and the good guys will triumph over the evil in the world. Drama, fear, love, kindness and the evil of mankind all rolled up into four great books.
The scientific scenario is entirely plausible and the progression of the pandemic fits. I had some suspicion in the first book, but it seemed confirmed in the early part of the book that the author was using the president in this story as a surrogate for President Obama and his Chief of Staff was an analogue for Rahm Emanuel. Given the positive comments made about Rush Limbaugh, I think the author is revealing his own political viewpoint. I prefer more ambiguity.
As I said in my review of book 1 in this series this is another must read book by readers of almost every genre of fiction. I also want to praise the author for creating an apocalyptic tale without the use of foul language or excess violence making this a series that can be read by anyone old enough to comprehend it. An incredible feat of creativity to build a believable world where humans potentially face extinction without the use of cursing or any unnecessary gore. Fantastic!
The story is well wriien, but there are some major issues with the actions. The epidemiologists walk into a isolation wars and are afraid to get near a doctor or touch him, they walk around with no protection and take the patient 's chart off the wall in the contamination ward. Next, the agents go into a mall knowing that the head terrorist is there and people are spreading the plaque bacteria, but again they talk about protective gear, but don't use anything.
A BA. SYFY. Novel /(PAMT-1)/ Let the Pandemonium Begin
BA. has. penned the 2nd novel of the PAMT series which exploded in the pages. The plague has been release be ISIS terrorists in Central America. The first Hot Zone had 100% fatalities and two young boys managed to get away. The DTRA Team has attempted to pass on the warnings, but to no avail. The problem is not that it will happen , but when and where will it begin. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Pandemic book 2 describes the posssible disintegration of America from the sinister man-made adaptation of the plague as terrorists quietly, and with deadly intent, slyly circulate throughout big cities, spraying commonly used surfaces (such as mall railings and door knobs) as well as infecting innocent children and adults to decimate and bring down the USA. Societal collapse is just beginning. Extinction for the human race may be the end.
Bobby Akart has done it again. One of the most enlightening post-apocalyptic tales that will keep you on the edge of your seat while the plague spreads and society collapses. This series will open your eyes to how fast a disease can spread, and will also give you some ideas on how to protect yourself and your family. I highly recommend this series to everyone.
The Innocents, book two of the Pandemic Series, takes up from where book one, Beginnings, left off. With The Innocents Mr. Akart makes the mundane, every day tasks terrifying. So get the book, set aside some times and be prepared to be scared, and deeply satisfied! Mr. Akart never fails to deliver.
This was a good presentation of how a pandemic will progress. Mac and Hunter are real people who act as many of us would. There is good, factual information throughout the story that gets one to thinking about what should be done in a large scale or small scale event. I am looking forward to the next book!
Rather than repeating my review from the first book of this series, I will simply say that this book lives up to the standard set in the first book. Again, there were a couple of grammar and typos but nothing of any substance that would prevent me from giving this book a good review. I anxiously await the release of book three!
I’ve enjoyed reading Ekarts books especially the Blackout series and the one about Yellowstone. This series is a lot more political with lots of medical jargon. A little harder to follow for me. But I love the characters and their storyline. Looking forward to the next book
