A sheltered ranch wife and her friends trade their dresses for workpants to take on the rigors of a cattle drive — but the challenges are even greater than they imagined. Will they overcome with hearts and humor intact? Will they survive at all? “Stan Himes is a fantastic storyteller who keeps you laughing — until he has you crying or scared.” — Angela Dorsey, author of A Horse Called Freedom Reader "I think every young woman doubting herself in any way should read this book. The ending found me smiling for each character in the story. Kudos to the author!" "I know if you enjoy reading about strong confident and brave women you will love this book as much as I did!" "Recommend this books to all who enjoy Westerns, or even if you have never read one. I think you would perhaps see some of the personalities, philosophies and behavior in yourself and those you know and only read about! A very HUMAN book!" "WOW. Bought this book with the thoughts of perhaps a light read.... I'm telling you, the detail, the writing, the story were all superb." "This book is for everyone. I couldn't wait to see what happened but I didn't want it to end." "If this book doesn't get made into a big-budget movie with an ensemble of major actresses, Hollywood will have missed out on a blockbuster." "I loved this book from beginning to end. And the unique way the author told it. A most fun read. If I had lived in that time period I would have wanted to be one of those women in pants!"
This is a true story of some truly brave women driving a cattle drive ...each woman on this cattle drive had their reasons for joining ...the main characters Mary and Katie (mother and daughter) had to run their cattle to market cause Mary's husband got injured and although he didn't like the idea and all the ranch hands had gone gold digging they didn't have a choice ...they had to get the cattle to market or loose the ranch....that's when some of the women in town decided to help Mary and Katie on the cattle drive, and of course you couldn't do that in a dress so they wore pants ...it was a truly thrilling and dangerous adventure that made the women true friends for life ...highly recommend this book ...I couldn't put it down and I know if you enjoy reading about strong confident and brave women you will love this book as much as I did!
You read this adventure of young women who did the job only men could do. It just goes to show everyone that women who put their minds to do something, it will get done. Sometimes women as well as men are presented a situation that they must accomplish or there isn't a next time.. This is a great story, actually it's reality because we all have read about women who have done what society said couldn't be done because women aren't built to do such work..fooled them haven't we..you do what you have to keep food on the table and a roof over head to keep dry.. Life isn't a Rose garden...but some still think it is until they get stuck a thorn...
I was ready for some light entertainment when I started this book. I finished it in a day. It was humorous, well paced chick lit with Western flavor. It was not real accurate with its social history, using slang from ten years ago, but the conversational tone of the story is fun, so I made an exception and forgave that. The women had ideas a hundred years ahead of the time setting though some of the morals of those bygone times were evident in the story. I liked the development of relationships between the women characters, and had many laughs--the author has a wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed the writing style, wondering if the author is truly male as the name "Stan" suggests. The girl talk and women's perspective was spot on!
I can hardly wait to read the next Women in Pants story!
Each and every character in this book are interesting and make you want them all to survive the ordeals they face. A very well written book with great descriptions, but not overly descriptive. Definitely not a boring moment to be read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and hope to read these character’s next adventures!
Stan Himes is a fantastic storyteller who keeps you laughing - until he has you crying or scared. Five women drive a herd of cattle to market across the wild prairie, and find a lot of adventure, fun, scares, confidence, and even love along the trail.
This story was exciting. Its about a cattle drive undertaken by by a group of women & an old man driving a team of mules & cooking for the women cowboys who wore bluejeans. It was unheard of for women & teenaged girls to drive cattle or wear men's clothing to do it. It wasn't an easy trip but their adventures keep you reading as quick as possible There is some romance, Indians, rustlers, men wanting to sell women, & rivers to cross. There is a good ending but not what you were expecting.
Wonderful, uplifting and fun to read. An easy western to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the trials and tribulations of the different personalities of the women in pants. It's hard to pick one character out of so many delightful ones, as a favorite. Each character is more than ready to receive her Happily Ever After. Thank you Stan Himes for writing The Women in Pants. On to the next book.
What an interesting book! Due to an dramatic accident; bank plans to foreclose on the ranch; and, no men in site as they left for silver mines, the females were forced into action. A cattle drive must head north! Clothed in pants and shirts, trained with horses and guns, they head to Dodge City. There’s action, kidnappings, rustlers and on top of all that, there’s romance. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for this author.
Mary, Katie, Pearl and all the other ladies started on this seemingly impossible task of trailing a need of cattle to Dodge City at the risk to their own lives. The action is fast and the dangers are great . It is a really good read that is too good to put down .BRAVO!!!!BRAVO 👏👏👏
I've only read a western one time years ago. This one was refreshing because not only was it a really good western but being about women was like icing on a cake. I bought the book this morning and just finished it in one setting. I've got to revisit these strong 💪 ladies in book two. I definitely recommend this book, you will truly enjoy it.
This is really a great story. Well written. I like stories about the 1700 & 1800's and this one did not disappoint. I loved the fact that the detail in the book was exactly the right amount. You were given the detail, but not too much. I don't like books that give you 3 paragraphs to describe a hillside, for example.
I never give a review with information about a story and don't like reading them myself. I will just stay - read the book you won't be disappointed.
This was one of the very best vs l have read in a long time. Once l started reading l just couldn't put it down. It seemed as though you could almost feel as though you were there. The author really brought to life many scenes in this story. The daily aches and pains of constantly riding for beginners brought back memories for me. The encounters with thieves and killers kept you on the edge and wondering if they would be able to accomplish this ride. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure and reading about what it might have been like to try something like this. Awesome writing and l sincerely hope to see a series about this family.
Oh gosh I loved this story. Here's to the first of women being able to accomplish whatever they set their mind to. Lots of hardship on the trail but all survived and happiness seemed to follow. I could hardly wait for the next chapter. A really good read. Thank you Stan Himes for a well written book.
The story line moved well and the variety of characters was enjoyable. I normally would not have chosen a western novel but I'm glad I selected this one.
What an awesome story! While the story was written unconventional, it has been the best story I've read about on a woman's determintion. Thank you for bringing this story to life.
Excellent Story !!! It’s a must read if you like westerns.
Story started off a little slow for me but by the end I was hooked. Lost some sleep at times because I wanted to know what was next. Like the fact that the main characters were women.
This book drew my imagination to the time of driving cattle to market, and by women.😊 If you ever dreamed of being a real cowgirl of the old west this the book for you.
A unique tale.Well writion. Would make a great movie. I know women who hold to the old traditional roles and others who seek adventures. I fall in the middle. Reading good books keeps me going in my mature years as my body slows down. Keep me entertained.
Fun, engaging story. The characters seemed real. Exciting climax. Story demonstrated that intelligence ,mercy, forgiveness, determination, and a sense of humor can overcome evil and tribulation.
I enjoyed reading this book. I felt it had a slow, somewhat confusing start but developed into a good story. There were enough twists and turns to hold your interest .
The Women in Pants: Sidesaddle No More will be able to stand with the great western novels like True Grit, Hondo, Shane and The Searchers. This book will make you laugh and cry. I loved it.
I so enjoyed this book and due to the fact that I have ridden in many cattle drives myself, I can relate to it all, except for the dangerous men in the story. It brought back many stories. A lot of them laughable.. I will probably read this again.
A great western tale with an unusual storyline about a ragtag group of women that must take a herd of cattle from Texas to Dodge City. A truly enjoyable book.
I just loved it. What an adventure. It truly depicted the ability women have to step up and get things done. No whining or crying just backbone and determination. Thank you to the author. Mr. Himes must have sisters or strong women in his life. He was able to detail their grit in a way I wouldn't have expected from a man.
