Ya gotta love these westerns! Wonderfully written in a way that draws you into the story right from the beginning. Rock Wesley and two ranchhands are moving fifteen Morgan mares back to Wesley’s ranch. They are ambushed and his two friends killed and the mares stolen. Left for dead, Rock escapes, is found by Meg McAlpin who helps him recover. How to find the killers as well as the horses in a town where one man owns most all the businesses and rules without mercy is the quest of Rock.
Rock Wesley is moving some breeding mares to his ranch when he's ambushed. The mares are stolen, his buddies killed, and he is wounded and left for dead. Taken in by a kind family, he finds himself in a small town caught in the grip of a conniving rancher, Chenoweth, and his slew of crooked men. It doesn't take long for him to realize that he was ambushed by Chenoweth's men and his horses are still on the bad man's ranch.
This is one of those pulps where every time the hero moves a couple steps ahead, he gets pushed back three. He beaten, shot, jailed, and bushwhacked. He doesn't even really want the horses back, just justice for his dead pals.
Chenoweth is a great villain, the arrogant bully you can't wait to see get his comeuppance.
There's some gutsy women, too, who refuse to be damsels in distress, which was nice. Rock falls for one of them, of course.
Fun read. It seems like this was "Mack Saunders's" only book. I don't know if "Mack" is a nom de plume or if the guy just had one book in him, but if it was the latter, that one book was a doozy.
