Dr. Chandan Kumar was a Professor of Ancient Indian History and Architecture at Ohio State University. He received an email from his aunt. The email contained three photos of Vidura and a copy of her bio-data. It was a marriage proposal.
A vibrant face, a strong built, a degree in economics and training in Bharatanatyam — Vidura was easily the best girl Chandan had encountered for marriage. He liked her instantly.
She was the eldest daughter of the Devrathi family from Ankola. The Devrathis were a well-respected clan in their town. They had been the caretakers of the Swami Devrathi temple for more than two-hundred years.
Vidura was unprepared to be married, she rejected the proposal. Chandan’s kundali had matched Vidya and Vaishnavi too — Vidura's two younger sisters.
The Devrathis is a story based on the arranged marriage system in India. The ending has taken me by surprise. Interesting read to fill small breaks of the day.
The Devrathis was a nice quick read. Sagar Arlekar in his first book pitches to make a point "One gets what one is fated". The story presents multiple levels of complexities in human relationship and nature. The ending is very unexpected. The book will leave you wanting to know more about life of 3 Devrathi sisters.
I must say the gripping introduction to the book compelled me to immediately buy it and read it till the end, in one go! The story is well crafted and the author has overall done a great job in keeping the reader captivated throughout! The climax did come with a surprisingly forceful impact and I think that's the beauty of it all! Congratulations to Mr. Sagar Arlekar on his fully entertaining debut book! I wish him success with this and all his future projects!
