When Brianna discovers her little sister has cancer, she's willing to try anything to save her: even if it means getting her science fair group to hack a new medical technology that involves microscopic robots. After creating an underground app that lets students alter their appearance, they suddenly find themselves in a bidding war between tech companies and at the mercy of the government, which sees them as criminals. Then a few of their "mods" go haywire and give them permanent abilities that border on the supernatural. As society crumbles around them--disintegrating into an age war between adult and the teens--they go on the run in a quickly shifting reality, where all things are possible, but nothing is certain.

Selfie is a near-future, apocalyptic young adult technothriller that deals with themes of bullying, body modification and advances in the health care industry that challenges what it means to be human.

Whoa!

I don't know why I'm surprised! Derek Murphy is just incredible! So he's done it again and written a fantastic story. My only complaint is having to wait for the rest. All of his books end on major cliffhangers. I've never read so many different types of stories from one author and found every single one very enjoyable.

When an unlikely group of high school kids are put together for a science project, they’re hardly expected to get along. Let alone create an app so powerful that they literally give themselves superpowers.

This was an absolutely amazing technothriller. From the very beginning, I loved Brianna’s character. She’s a total tech-girl, hacking and modifying just about everything she comes into contact with. Whether that be her skateboard or her phone, she’s always got ideas. It’s no surprise when she becomes the face of Selfx.

The concept of the app was interesting. The way that the users can change anything about themselves. This leaves tons of possibilities for modifications when it comes to health problems and sports and the like. An unintended side effect of the app though? Superpowers.

Suspense is ramped up as the group decides whether they should release the app or sell it and get out from under its shadow. After a series of illegal decisions, the app is operating in a gray area of the law. An area that could get them arrested as domestic terrorists.

Just when they begin to think everything is going to be okay, danger enters their lives once again and this time, they might not be able to get out.

That ending left me ready for the sequel. That was probably the worst thing that could happen as a side effect. A real cliffhanger. I want to learn more about Brianna and what happens to her and the science group. Also, I want to see more into her world.

While this is the first technothriller I’ve read, I thought it was absolutely fantastic. It has an academy vibe as well as that of a dystopia. If you’re in the market for something outside the box, read this book.

An app that can allow you to customize your appearance through DNA modification, designed by a group of school kids, using government bots. What could go wrong?

The government releases cutting-edge nanotechnology to be trialed in humans with specific illnesses. Brianna and her classmates, David, Brad, Amy and Greg decide to create an app which can alter appearance by hacking the bots for their science fair project.

This young adult techno thriller allows the reader to discover along with the characters what can go right and wrong when you toy with genetic modification. What would happen and who would want a piece of the discovery, the government, the tech billionaire, overseas governments? What are their motivations? Is it morally right to monetize?

This was a fascinating first read in a still being written series. Set in a high school with themes around bullying, body modification, loss and technology advances. As a YA novel, it would be suitable for high school students of all ages.

I was gripped from the beginning and enthralled by the possibility of the tech, horrified by the actions of some of the characters, and taken back to high school by others.

While the novel’s originality isn’t cutting edge, the story pulls together a lot of elements and rolls them together very well. The characters really come across as high-school seniors with the rebellious streaks and infinite curiosity but with very little self-control. The novel hits all the great philosophical points - should we insert ourselves into humanity’s natural evolution; how do you keep control once the data is out there; can you marry empathy and greed; are we starting something that can never be reversed? The teenagers pretty clearly don’t care or rather focus on immediate needs like money and healthcare over the possible repercussions. It’s interesting to read how their naïveté begins to unravel at the end. The introduction of superpowers adds a fun aspect and one I’m sure the sequel will build upon. A fun book that leaves you with some introspective homework.

Derek Murphy's books that I usually read are fantasy. This book is more sci-fi and is set in the not too distant future, where nano-technology has exciting new applications. A group of high school kids hack into this system, and what follows is their thrilling journey in dealing with the consequences of their actions.

I'll be honest - it took me a chapter or two to get into the rhythm and characters of the book. But once I did, I was hooked! What makes this book more exciting is that the technology and its applications don't seem to be that "far out", which makes the entire premise of the book even more believable, immersive and exciting. Definitely waiting for the next installment!

Note: I received an ARC copy of this book, but it does not impact my review or rating in any way.

Awesome story

I didn't expect this to be good, but wow it was amazing. This month marks one year that my mom died of cancer and I always wonder what would have happened if we were rich and could afford better treatments for her. Brianna's desperation felt mine, especially when she was angry at the platitudes that follow. I really hope there is a sequel to this so that I can find out what happens.

The only thing is the writer needs to hire an editor, its a minor detail but some passages are glaring. But, even with that its a great book that needs to be shared and fleshed out. I felt like I was watching a tv show

Loved it

I read most of Mr. Murphy's book. And I truly love nearly all of them. I burn through them quickly not able to put them down. This one is no exception. I do wish it had been edited before going to Kindle. It at times messed up the story but I try not to let that bother me. But its a fun interesting story on an interesting topic. I can't wait for the next one. As usual. Enjoy

I don’t know if writing this review will make a difference but at the end of this book it said to write a review so the author knows we liked it if we wanted to see the next book in the series. Well I LOVED it. I never write reviews and I’m writing a review because I want to see what happens next. This book is so different and probably my favorite of all of this authors books. PLEASE WRITE THE NEXT ONE!

Sometimes, that Selfie can cause you immense trouble!

This is a great illustration of how science , tech and teens can amalgamate into a seriously important change on how we understand life. Very good characters, a clear progression and clear depictions of reactions from government, tech outfits and social media and gaming fans. Ample room for future sequels from a highly competent Author!

Unable to put it down.

This was a great story that is kinda scary when you think about the limits of science fiction. A lot of what we once thought of as such is now everyday use.Who knows what could happen. I hope that there is more, because I really want to know what happens next.

very interesting

Top marks for originality , truly a genre breaking story. Great characters, interesting storylines, fascinating. Only four star because there are long boring parts, controversial subjects like bullying with naked pictures are glossed over and barely effect the victim, and many wholes in the plot. But, wow, very original. Recommended for that alone.

I had such I hopes for this book. The first half seemed very repetitive and rushed, and then before I knew it, just as it was getting interesting, it was over. The story had so much potential. I could end the series with the cliffhanger and be happy, and even though I was slightly disappointed, I could and probably will read the rest of the series if it ever comes out.

Quick read YA with a significant dose of technologies applied. A very interesting look at what Nanotechnology and Genetic Engineering is going to bring to our world - if we can survive it and the other threats to our existence.

Enthralling read

I recommend this book. It was a really enjoyable read. Some of the technology is ready out there. Can nanobots do this already? Really makes you wonder.

Wow!

I am disappointed that there is no 2nd book in the offing. This book shows that our future is in the hands of young people who have not been hampered with “you can’t do that…”. We need more books like this one. Read this book!

A fun story, with anticipation built for the next installment.

I took one star away for all the grammar issues. If you pay me a couple hundred dollars I’ll proofread it for you and correct all that.

70 year old YA says this book is RADICAL!

I love to find books that gives a different slant to the story. SELFX had so many surprises in it that I had to keep reading. What a fun ride it was.

really good story

Really enjoyed this book about kids in high school figuring out how to alter the DNA. Turned into almost superhero type modifications. Great fantasy story. Well written. Kept me interested all the way through. Also, it was clean enough for all ages.

This was quite a good book! I loved how unique this was to anything else I had read before. I found it hard to want to put it away and was so enveloped in the story. I wish it ended a little cleaner though. All in all, great book!

I absolutely loved this book. I just need a sequel as no spoilers but it got left on a massive cliffhanger. I could do with this being a series. Loved it that much.

science fair project or not?

While a little slow at the start, this intriguing story soon pulls the reader in. A lot Of ethical and moral issues are brought up throughout the storyline, and I feel most of them are left for the reader to answer at this point. There are many questions to be answered, who hacked the hackers? I am definitely interested in seeing where this goes

First off, I didn’t do anything else than read today....all day. The book was this good. Amazing actually. I’m not a Device Kid, too old for that, but I do love my gadgets. And I don’t doubt that the future described so brilliantly by D,S. Murphy, isn’t that farfetched. I can’t wait to get the next book and find out what happens next. I really, really hope Melissa will get punished somehow. She is a mean, jealous person and I wanted to kick her myself. It’ll be interesting to see where the story goes from here. Superheroes, Super healers or fugitives on the run.

I can’t believe how much I enjoyed this book. I usually read fantasy but I like this author so read out of my realm. So glad I did. The story was great and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
This story takes place in the near future which really made me stop and think about what truly is possible. Really enjoyed the character development and I’m really looking forward to seeing where/how all the characters end up. Hero’s w/ super powers or mutants on the run?!!??

Good story line

I really enjoyed this story, and it made me wonder if bots in bodies was a possible thing. Maybe in the future?
I would make a suggestion---better proof reading. There were mistakes in almost every page, which was distracting
