Theatre of Cruelty
Don’t let me be misunderstood: I loved most of Philippe Claudel’s novels I have read so far.
Pitch-black, angry and brutal, I imagine these 25 interconnected vignettes are mostly meant to shock - to denounce contemporary complacency and hypocrisy. However the books I have previously read of Philippe Claudel also tackle the dark sides of human nature, this sarcastic exposure of the obscene absurdness of the human species is quite another kettle of fish. Other than the delicate Monsieur Linh and His Child’ or the gut-wrenching Brodeck – which I both loved - Inhumaines shows human abomination and disgrace pushed to the bitter limits. An Über-dystopia, registered factually in off-hand and unadorned sentences; impassive, friendship, love or hope non-existent. Refugees, the poor, cancer patients, the homeless, foetuses, the dead, all are subject to the bizarre noisome nastiness of the middle class. Chilling indifference, insensitive scoff and crude abuse are depicted in grotesque scenes. In its representation of present-day nihilism and consumerism one can see the shadow of Michel Houellebecq hovering over these stories (particularly in the seemingly compulsive omnipresence of sex, including fish giving head, artificial vagina’s), which give this book a flavour of pastiche – missing however Houellebecq’s whiffs of romantic sentimentalism, tenderness or mercy.
Philippe Claudel situates his satire on present-day mores in the long tradition of Petronius, Rabelais, Molière, Voltaire, Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, Ionesco, Jarry. He also refers to the monsters created by visual artists having inspired him (Hieronymus Bosch, Brueghel, George Grosz, Otto Dix), specifying his ambition with this book is placing a funhouse mirror in front of us, to provoke a laugh, if merely a sour one.
However I can relate to Claudel’s indignation, unfortunately, I seem not very susceptible to this kind of grim satire, maybe because Claudel’s style and tone struck me as gravely contrived, too serious, coarse and irate to render the outrageously absurd if only a tad funny. The scene that brought me closest to a grimace was one of assisted suicide, reminding me of the ‘completed life’ discussion in the Netherlands.
This tiny book might speak to readers who enjoyed the film C’est arrivé près de chez vous, also a source of inspiration for Inhumaines. As much as my friends back at that time loved that black comedy crime mockumentary for its exposure of human cruelty and indifference, I failed to see the humour of it. At that time I didn’t need any more (violent) proof of the barrenness – or monstrosity – of the human heart - and I don’t need it now.
Closing this book feeling quite perplexed and slightly nauseous , it was a breath of fresh air to come across the following transcript of Elif Shafak ‘s talk How to Remain Sane in the Age of Populism, Pessimism, and Political Uncertainty:
On the other hand, extreme pessimism is going to make us disconnected from our fellow human beings. And if I may share this with you, I read the memoirs of writers, poets who have survived very dark chapters of human history, including the Holocaust. So what’s interesting to me is that almost all of them are saying something similar. They are saying bad things happen in human history, not because people are bad. There are some bad people but their numbers are not that large in fact, but nonetheless awful things can happen. So why is that? And they are saying the opposite of goodness is not necessarily badness. The opposite of kindness is not necessarily wickedness or evil. They are saying the opposite of goodness is in fact numbness. The moment we become desensitized, indifferent when we lost that interest in the story of another fellow human being, in the pain of another human being. I think those who (inaudible) of indifference are very dangerous. So a little bit of pessimism is going to keep us more alert, more aware, but not too much and a little bit of optimism is needed so that we can more engaged. So that is why I go back to Antonio Gramsci, the Italian thinker. He used to talk about the pessimism of the intellect. Because the mind has to remain sharp and pessimistic, but the heart has to be optimistic. So he would talk about the optimism of the will, and I think this is an age in which we are going to need both.

Help!
Wie heeft de zachte, fragiele, tedere Claudel ontvoerd en vervangen door dit vileine, soms vulgaire en meestal choquerende exemplaar? Of misschien is dit wel de oorspronkelijke Claudel cfr. mijn review van Zonder mij.
Het doet zeker nadenken en gelukkig doet het vaak ook luidop schaterlachen en meestal glimlachen.
Nog!!

De Philippe Claudel he leído El archipiélago del perro y La nieta del señor Linh que me han parecido absolutamente maravillosas.
Así que con una ilusión tremenda empecé la lectura de este libro de relatos. 142 páginas, 25 textos en los que la cabeza me explotó. Si alguien me hubiera visto y oído durante la lectura lo que hubiera visto sería una sucesión de ojos abiertos, bocas abiertas y expresiones faciales de asombro y hubiera oído una serie de "ohh!!", "pero qué es esto" y otras...
Sorprendente, dura y cruel podían ser las características para definir estos relatos que todos y cada uno tienen en común que parecen ser sacados del día a día de una distopia de lo más salvaje y cruel. Una sociedad en la que sus componentes han perdido toda humanidad y todos los valores convirtiéndose en monstruos en los que los demás importan poco o nada.
Con frases sencillas, breves, directas y contundentes denuncia la inexistencia de la empatia, del amor, de la amistad y de todo tipo de sentimiento hacia el prójimo.
Y escandaliza con el trato dado a los pobres, a los ancianos, a los enfermos, a la gente sin hogar, a los inmigrante... nada ni nadie se salva.
Y aunque está llevado al extremo da que pensar si no será cierto que el hastío existencial y la ausencia de valores nos está llevando a perder la humanidad y volvernos inhumanos.

De steeds lieflijke, zachtmoedige Claudel verandert in een boze, harde verteller. 25 satirische verhalen over o.a. Palliatieve zorgen, Zelfmoord, E-commerce, Onderwijs, de Sociale kloof, Het Klimaat, het Huwelijk, Vluchtelingen... Claudel meets Houellebecq.

1,5?? Si j'ai apprécié certaines nouvelles, c'était juste... trop pour moi. J'ai compris ce que l'auteur voulait faire, compris la critique de société.. mais c'était too much pour moi.

August 16, 2023Dans ce livre, l’auteur repousse les limites de l’humain.
Il y a une solution pour tout. L’environnement, les personnes âgées, les sans-abri, la sexualité, quoi faire avec nos morts, les enfants, la contraception, les maladies, les suicides, les accidents, etc.
Dans ce livre, rien n’est grave. Tout a une solution, faut juste que vous preniez le tout avec un grain de sel malgré la violence de la solution -parfois-.
On se fait bardasser dans une série de petits chapitres qui suivent les mêmes personnages mais dans toutes sortes de situations de la vie quotidienne, gérées de manière bien différente.
Les meilleures explications pour ce lire sont des citations de ce dit livre :
“J’y vois là une dérive préoccupante. Si nous glissons sur cette pente, nous risquons de perdre le bel esprit des origines. Mais la nature humaine est ainsi faite qui ne se contente jamais de ce qu’elle a.” P32

“Nous sommes devenus des monstres.
On pourrait s’en affliger.

Dat was even schrikken. Schuttingtaal in de mooiste bewoordingen, liefdevolle vernederingen, vulgariteiten en waanzinnige situaties. Voor dit verhaal heeft Claudel alle laagjes van de mens afgepeld, beschaving, opvoeding, terughoudendheid, liefde en genegenheid. Wat overblijft is de rauwe kern, de functionerende humanoïde die ageert volgens primaire behoeftes in een omgeving die ontstaan is uit de ons bekende samenleving. Het gebrek aan menselijke waarden en waardigheid waar onze maatschappij steeds meer aan lijdt wordt uitvergroot in deze absurde science-fictionachtige nachtmerrie. Pure Sartre, l'enfer c'est les autres.

סחר בבני אדם, רצח כספורט, חילול גופות, יחסי מין עם חיות, קניבליזם, ובעיקר אדישות, אדישות, ועוד פעם אדישות. חוסר האכפתיות של הדמויות לכל הדברים המחרידים האלו, הוא שגרם לי לנטוש את הספר.
האדישות אחד כלפי השני - בעל לאישתו, הורים לילדיהם, אדם לרעהו - היא נוראית ומזעזעת. כן, אני יודעת שזו "סאטירה חברתית נוקבת" וכל העניין הוא ההקצנה, אך קלודל מראה פה חברה ללא כל צל של אנושיות, שפשוט עשתה לי רע. לפחות השם של הספר מדויק.
מאז ברודק אני מחכה לקרוא ספר נוסף של קלודל. אבל הספר הזה - לא בשבילי.

Ik kan niet geloven dat ik zo weinig waardering heb voor deze bundel korte verhalen door Philippe Claudel, die ik beschouw als een van mijn favoriete schrijvers. Maar deze verhalen zijn zo naar en onaangenaam dat ik ze niet kon verdragen. Nee, dit is niet voor mij.

Muy raro. Hay una obsesión constante con el sexo depravado y con matar a todo el mundo.
Supongo que detrás de cada relato hay un mensaje superinteresante sobre la sociedad o algo así, pero yo no lo he captado. Raro, bizarro y algunos hasta desagradables.

Le moins qu'on puisse dire de ce livre c'est qu'il dérange. C'est une compilation de situations où l'on passe - peut-être même, où l'on se trouve déjà - dans l'inhumanité totale justement à cause et à force de vouloir paraître trop humain, trop libéral, trop tolérant. Peu de comportements, peu de paroles, de gestes nous choquent. On tolère tout, on se veut compatissant, ouvert à tout... Ces 25 textes agissent comme une claque et nous forcent de poser la question du bien-fondé de ces néo-valeurs humanistes. Celà dit, j'ai noté beaucoup de répétition, d'accès plutôt facile à des scènes qui, à un moment, peuvent laissé le lecteur indifférent, à force de trop vouloir choquer.

Que dire de ce roman qui nous emmène dans un monde ou l'humain a perdu tout ce qui faisait de lui un homme . Chacun y est interchangeable, les sentiments qu'ils soient positifs comme l'amour, l'empathie, la compassion ou négatifs comme la colère, l'impatience ou la haine n'existent plus . Tout y est à vendre , l'Entreprise domine, les pauvres sont envoyés en camps de concentration, les vieux assassinés, l'antropophagie quotidienne... Reste le sexe, la baise, la copulation, omniprésent, comme exutoire .Heureusement que ce roman ne fait que 130 pages

recuerdo que La nieta del Señor Linh fue el primer libro "de mayores" que me prestó mi padre con nueve o diez años y me emocionó mucho, por eso al principio no reconocí al autor cuando empecé este libro. Ha pasado de mostrar una sensibilidad tan grande a inclinarse hacia lo grotesco, me ha gustado por la violencia y las idas de olla, lo experimental de la colección de relatos, en general, pero me ha dejado preocupada por el escritor, la verdad, espero que esté bien...

Onmenselijk of juist “des mensen”? Onuitspreekbare gedachten en fantasieën worden hier te boek gesteld, je moet het maar durven. Heerlijk!
Zitten er niet een aantal thema’s tussen die het uitwerken waard zijn?
Voor mij is Claudel in zijn opzet geslaagd bepaalde uitwassen van ons denken en onze moraal satirisch onder onze neus te wrijven.

Naar aanleiding van onze lezing ivm met de schrijver Claudel in de Bib van Malle heb ik deze gelezen. De personen die deze hadden gelezen waren 'gedegouteerd' en eerst dacht ik moet ik deze maar niet lezen. Maar curiositeit heeft het daar gewonnen. Ik vond het boek goed. Ik geef toe als je sex, erecties en penissen enz verachtelijk vind lees je deze beter niet. Maar het doel van het boek is en was shockeren en daar is hij perfect in geslaagd. Ja hij vind dat de maatschappij verloedert en ergens kan ik hem daar geen ongelijk ingeven. Hij kaart dit zo erg duidelijk aan in zijn obscene vorm dat het soms erg grappig wordt. Het verhaaltje dat mij het ergst bij blijft is dat van de armen waar hij de oplossing dan ook voor vind in vergelijking met de concentratiekampen.

Volgens Claudel zelf is hij “ervan overtuigd dat er situaties zijn waarbij de literatuur de rol van schuurpapier op zich moet nemen. Om de hersens op te schuren – het doet eerst pijn, maar daarna kriebelt het ook.” Juist. Deze verhalen geven de gangbare normen en waarden een duwtje...

Oh man where to start. This is a 3 star review, but not the same 3 stars as I have given to other books. This is 3 stars because I'm torn: part of me hated it and wanted to give it a 1 star and part of me thinks that if an author can get you that riled up then it's worth 5 stars. No way in hell I can get my self to give it a 5 so 3 it is. This is basically a dark dark take on what humanity has become/is on the way to become. No one is spared, men, women, cancer patients, old people, immigrants. It's extremely disturbing. Difficult topics. Gory. Forces you to think about it. Ugh. Thank God it's only 130 pages. Is it weird to say that I'm intrigued by this author now? Stay tuned...

🍁 Hoy os traigo este libro de relatos del escritor Philippe Claudel. Hace algún tiempo había leído dos obras suyas : Almas grises y El archipiélago del perro, ambas me encantaron y creo que en las dos queda muy plasmada la personalidad del aclamado escritor.
Estos relatos para mí han sido diferentes. Reconozco al autor, pero llevado al extremo. Es un Claudel salvaje, distópico e irónico en su máxima expresión.
🍁El libro está dividido en 25 relatos cortos que tocan todos los temas imaginables: desde la enfermedad, la monogamia, la brecha social hasta la Navidad o el sentido de la vida.
Todos ellos bajo el prisma de una crítica feroz y descarnada de nuestras sociedades actuales en las que la deshumanización es el punto común.
🍁 Cuando terminé el primer relato mi estupefacción fue tan mayúscula que se lo tuve que leer de inmediato a mi marido y nos dio para un buen rato de cháchara. Sabía que @mi.terapia.alternativa lo iba a leer también y decidimos leerlo juntas, porque os aseguro que crean la necesidad imperante de comentar y debatir con alguien.
La experiencia ha resultado necesaria, enriquecedora y redonda.
🍁 En mi (nuestro) caso nos hemos leído el libro del tirón, pero pienso que una lectura más pausada en la que lees uno o dos relatos, los asimilas, los comentas o debates y los interiorizas sería mucho más provechosa.
En una palabra : Brutales. ¡BOOOOOM!

January 12, 2022Voilà un livre qui fait de la provocation son fil conducteur. Recueil de 25 histoires, les unes plus sordides que les autres, original, choquant, déroutant et, finalement, lassant. On peut se demander si l’auteur essaye d’échafauder une vision critique vis-à-vis de notre société par le truchement de ces petites histoires abordant des sujets variés (avec l'omniprésence du sexe). Hélas je ne sais point si les sujets polémiques qu’il utilise reflètent une réalité allant au-delà de la France ou même au-delà de la génération de l’écrivain même (ou si ce n’est pas directement que le reflet des préoccupations de Philippe Claudel).
Cela dit, je pense que ce livre peut faire le bonheur des lecteurs aimant l’humour noir (poussé peut-être ici à l’extrême).

First of all this book should have a tw about sex and violence. It's really rough in it's representation of this monstrous humanity. I enjoyed it in the way it denounced the flaws of our society. How if we push the to the very end it will make us monster and we should be careful and change our way of life. What i liked also is that it's really shocking but the way it's written it's really cold, like facts. The dialogue are not showed so you don't always know if it's a thought or part of a conversation. But for me even though it's only 130 pages it was a bit too long to have all this disgusting people acting like the worst humans. It's a bit rough

Wat een on-Philippe-Claudel-boek is dit.
Korte verhalen waarvan ik alleen maar kan vermoeden dat de overdrijving cynisch of sarcastisch bedoeld is. Rijk vs arm, blank vs zwart, Westers vs al de rest, geen enkel taboe wordt geschuwd, zelfmoord, verkoop van vrouwen, uitlenen en delen van vrouwen voor seks op allerhande manieren, bestialiteiten, kannibalisme, seksoperaties, het ene verhaal is al gekker en dwazer dan het andere.
De gebloemde taal waarvan ik de auteur ken is vervangen door platvloersheid.
Nee, dit was het niet.

Dommage. Un livre avec quelques prémisses intéressantes, mais qui souffre malheureusement de sa forme. 25 textes pour moins de 100 page… ne permet pas de rendre assez consistant l’univers décrié et on passe à côté de la satyre visée.
Fan d’absurde et d’humour noire, il faut avouer que j’ai souri à quelques lignes plutôt bien ficelées:
« C’est fatiguant de tuer. Même des vieux. »
« Comment a-t-on réussi à nous faire avaler que manger nos morts était plus écologique que de les enterrer ou les incinérer. »

Un livre dérangeant pour nous faire prendre conscience de la monstruosité de notre monde de notre inhumanité.
Bien que je partage les idées de l'auteur mais je n'ai pas aime le côté gore outrancier.
Il a voulu adopter un ton décalé voir drôle pour mieux nous affliger mais je n'ai pas du tout apprécié cet humour et ça ne m'a pas fait rire.

Foei, foei foei Claudel - wat een wrange verhalen en onsmakelijke beschrijving. Maar bravo, voor de verbeelding ! Van een totaal andere orde dan "Verslag van Brodeck" en "Het onderzoek" maar niettemin opnieuw een klein meesterwerkje. Mijn zintuiglijke waarneming varieerde permanent tussen glimlach en afkeer. Dat effect met een boek, il faut le faire.

Ik ben fan van Claudel, nadat ik 8 boeken van hem in de originele versie las. Dit boek vind ik het diagonaal contrast van al wat hij zoal schreef. Zwartgallige humor, wansmakelijk ook al zijn de karikaturen "eventueel" grappig bedoeld? Ik heb -hoe dun ook- het niet uitgelezen. Dit boekje spant tegen in al zijn facetten.

Des nouvelles absurdes, cocasses, décalées, un peu futuristes… comme si le monde devait continuer à partir en couilles encore un peu plus pire. Avec plein de sexe pas très réjouissant.
Mais pourtant, même si cela pouvait faire un truc rigolo… ces textes trop courts manquent quand même de consistance
