Sons of Sariel #1

A Demon in My Bed

Rate this book
A missing brother, mercenary demigoddesses and an unknown force pulling fate's strings are just a few of the hurdles facing Verrin when he wakes up in a dungeon one morning. As the son of a renegade Angelic Watcher, he was born ill fated. Being summoned by a plump little sex kitten who was everything he liked in a woman should have been a stroke of luck...

As a librarian, the most exciting choice Cassidy O'Neill usually has to make is what book to read next. She never expected an antique book to drop a dirty minded sex demon into her bed. Bound to his side until the summoning is fulfilled, Cass is determined not to lose her heart to Verrin - even if he is the sexiest man she's ever met.

In a world where myths are reality, falling in love is a gamble even immortals hesitate to take.

Omg, I have to say it.
A demon on the streets and a king in the sheets. ;) xD

•Just something unrelated, but also related: Verrin reminds me a little of the song Just Can't Let Her Go covered by Rajiv Dhall.

•So here you have the stereotypes: Verrin, who's a great chef, his brothers (who he lists into stereotypes, which I found pretty chuckle worthy), the MC who's insecure about her body and a librarian, Felicia who's the mean girl, and the evil empress (who's name I can't spell by memory for the life of me).

The story had many character stereotypes. (And someday I'm hoping a book starts out with the preconceived misconceptions of 2D (human) characters thought to be stereotypes by the MC, then it gradually changes to show that every character has diversity: in heart, in spirit, mentally, and personality wise). However, I still am having/had fun reading it because while they were stereotypical in some ways, they still have character. Strange, I know.

They were cute when they were awkward, when the incubi demon got shy, when the librarian started to feel better in her own skin, and when the best friend made some wise cracks and threats.

•The writing flowed quite well. Not many bumps. The only bumps I really had were ones made by formatting (and those can (probably) be easily changed).

Sometimes there would be double spaces and the table of contents didn't have links connecting the chapters, thus when you see it (at least on Kindle), the font was black and you couldn't click on the chapter you wanted to go to. (Good thing I bookmark ;)).

•I like how every-so-often there would be snippets of original ideas. Like the Original Nightmares (gimme more!)

•Okay, this is a major plot hole that I found and I'm tagging as a spoiler just in case.

Maybe I missed where that was not a plot hole, but it's gaping to me.

That is all.

3.5 simply wonderful stars.

I received an electronic reader copy in exchange for a fair review. Thank you very much Sarah Winters!

cw for assault and torture

Hm.

So. I am trying out new stuff, authors and sub-genres I have not read. This series was recommended on a Facebook group and I like me some mythical beings.

Lets start with the truly great stuff: this was well written, with engaging characters, amazing world building and a larger story arch that makes me want to carry on with the series.

The paranormal setting allows some amazing sexiness and fantasy fulfillment. It also allows for some hugely problematic stuff to be ok, because paranormal. I do have some issues with that.

Loss of control can be sexy in fantasies, I get that. And we do get an incredibly hot foursome towards the end out of it. But there is also the assault scene, which will be the basis for one of the brothers story arch. It was still a rape scene, and hard to stomach. But of course this was not really his fault, because „nature of the beast“. An excuse used against victims of sexual violence throughout the ages. But again, this is a paranormal romance, so the poor guy REALLY was out of his mind. As a reader you have to accept this to be ok with this story.

The book tells two parallel stories.

One is pretty light and sweet, the seduction of a prim librarian by the sex demon she accidentally summoned, and how they fall in love with each other. Even though we as the reader know that the demon Verrin does need to do the deed to stay sane, he looks out for his lady and takes care it is consensual on her part. He does (barely) hold on to his control even in a situation when their supernatural bond makes them extra horny, because of not wanting to compromise her workplace. He also cooks and does the dishes.

I do have some big questions about happy endings between normal humans and supernatural beings who live forever. The 2000 year age difference is addressed in the book, and yes, it sounds great to be the girl who makes a rake of such supernatural dimensions yours. But what about aging??? Will she get old and grey and die on him like the girl in the Highlander movie?

Intertwined with the seduction story there is the much darker tale of the younger brother in the dungeon, held there for his blood, and tortured by some truly evil, but still quite sexy supernatural ladies.

This story was intriguing, with the introduction of so many interesting people, good, bad and in between, with their different agendas, supernatural powers and wild backstories, and makes me want to know more. Especially the brothers. And the ex-angel. And who is the mysterious client behind it all?

The all male narration was well done.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review through Lovers of Paranormal.

This book is a solid 2.5-3 for me which is a good thing, considering my most recent reviews. A Demon in my Bed follows the trope of having a sex-god manly man seduce and sex up a young insecure woman. We've seen this plot line before. It crosses genres. Historical romance. Paranormal. Erotica. Science Fiction. Dinosaur porn (At least, I'm sure that's a genre. Not my cup of tea but I don't judge.)

So here's the good about it:

~It isn't vampire or werewolf based
~There's no troubling behavior in this book as far as pushing the woman to have sex, it's all 100% consensual or portrayed in such a way that it is not the author condoning it in any way
~There was an actual plot involved
~It was easy to relate to the main characters
~It was a fun and easy read

Some things I didn't like:

~Okay, it wasn't vampires or were's of any sort but it's basically the same type of character
~It did not feel like the plot was all that complete or anything resolved at the end
~The idea that a woman is insecure until she finds her man or gets sex is a bit obnoxious
~Why a librarian? Her job barely came into it at all
~Underdeveloped characters

This book felt like the start of something. It felt like it was missing a hundred pages of plot and character development but it was a solid quick story.

So, I have a new book boyfriend.... Verrin is the bees knees, and I may have tried that summoning spell myself once or twice. Any scenes with his brothers were a lot of fun. And Cass! That is a girl after my own heart. And she works in a library! I'm so jealous of her life. I had so much fun reading this book and look forward to the next one in the series coming out later this year. I definitely need to know what happens next for Cass and my boys.

Wowsaaaaa !!! I do not want this book to end.. This series is going to be awesomazingwowtastic !! I cannot believe that Ms Winters is a new author.. She writes with such finesse and the way the story progresses is lovely.. I like that each character has a depth and none of them are bland and boring.. The story had the perfect combination of loyalty, seduction, love, brotherhood and even comedy !!

Verrin is a sexy, Alpha-like incubus, but he still so courteous and in a way, a contradiction to how his incubus nature demands him to be.. I like that he is not just a bad-ass, demanding submission type guy (read that, past that) .. but is actually willing to work for it and impressing Cass.. and all this while his personality and body are swoon worthy..

And Cass, she is so much like us Goodreads book lovers.. So involved in mythological books and in love with the libraries.. Her naivety and innocence, though un-original, is a good combination with Verrin.. However, I must say, compared to other characters.. she did not excite me as much..

And I will not complete my review without mentioning how much I am looking forward to the other brothers' story.. Such promising possibilities.. how Sier is going to come out from his self-demolition course, how the serious and responsible Dan is going to lighten up.. how Mer's wicked side is going to overcome his studious side (Coz he was wicked with the queen !!) .. how Pithius is going to get schooled..ahhhh.. possibilities.. possibilities...
I hope Ms. Winters also includes the Emmy-Mormo-Lamia trio in her future stories.. they were a riot !! Mormo really brightened up the grey in the story..

In conclusion, absolute 5-mindblowing stars awarded to this book. You Ms.Winters, are phenomenally talented.. Please don't keep us waiting for the other books !!!

I get that it's a series, but the way the book ended felt really abrupt. If it had continued, I probably would have given it a better rating, but the ending was rather jarring to me, and I was, honestly, hoping for some serious revenge or actual resolution to ANY of the external conflicts.

That said, other than the ending, I rather enjoyed it. Though, I gotta say, I pictured a 6'10" man and a 5'3" (rounding up) woman... and... her face is pretty much at his stomach, she could just stand and give him a boobjob (I am not kidding)... the chick is not resting her head on his chest standing at full height, and even on her tippy-toes, she's not kissing his cheek. The height difference reminds me of when I used to roleplay, on occasion, in old Gorean chat rooms... the men were 6'5"+, and all the women were >5'.

Hey, I like tall guys as much as the next girl... but I'd rather they be a little more realistic. Thankfully, I mentally shortened him some, in my head, and it helped. Sorry, extreme height differences is something that pulls me out of a story, sometimes, when it's ridiculous. A safe rule of thumb is no more than one foot taller than the heroine (example).

Those things aside, I really got into the story when I was able to focus on it (I was listening to the audiobook while at work, and plan to re-listen to the first 8 hours, on my day off).

I would, in general, suggest it. It's a pretty hot read, though a violent scene at the end drags on a bit too much, creating a LOT of tension... this could be a good thing, if you like it, but I think that, given what happened, the heroine bounces back a little too quick, but each woman deals with trauma differently.

Anyway, I'm sure this is a bit of a clusterf*ck of a review, so I'm gonna leave it at that.

Amazing Story & Audible Listen🎧 Fascinating & Enjoyable!

A Demon in My Bed
Sons of Sariel, Volume 1
By: Sarah Winters
Narrated by: Logan McAllister

Sarah Winters is a talented author, she created such an imaginative world where Angels, Demons, Demigods, Incubus, Vampires, Shifters and other supernatural creatures exist, as well as humans. The storylines she created are interesting and just as imaginative. I love how she brings these supernatural and mythological beings into the modern world, they were not out of their element and were up to the times. I also love how Cassidy came upon Verrin. In addition to Cassidy and Verrin’s story, there are storylines about his brothers, one of whom, Seir, has been imprisoned by a SemiGoddess, Empusa. Verrin teams up with his other brothers to rescue Seir and you learn a bit about each brother. I am sure their stories are going to be just as great as Verrin’s. I highly recommend this action packed story, it will take you to the edge of your seat at times and have you smile at other times. It has it all, mystery, suspense, twists, drama and some hot romance. I am looking forward to see which Son of Sariel will be featured in the next book. Also need to find out who was behind Seir’s capturing and what pert does Murmur play. Sarah Winters, thank you for this greatly entertaining story.

I listened to the Audible edition, Logan McAllister is a terrific narrator and voice performer. He brings these characters to life, gives each their own unique sound and personality. He does a great job projecting the emotions of the characters into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen🎧

A Demon in My Bed is a well written book by Sarah Winters, my first one from this author and probably not my last. This book is packed with lots and lots of steam, so be prepared but what do you expect when a paranormal story is about the not so often written about incubus? I always enjoy it when an author choose a paranormal entity that is not commonly written about, especially when it is well done. The plot is unique and well developed. There are some nice twists hidden within and the pace is spot on. I never felt like the story dragged on nor did I ever feel like the author tried to rush me through the story, just perfect.

Cassidy is an adorable character, one I really enjoyed. Cass sure takes everything thrown at her in strides and grows well with the challenges she encounters. Verrin is probably the nicest demon you can find, so she sure lucked out in that department. Between these 2 is lots of steam and it was nice to see their story developing.

I really enjoyed that even though this seemed like a paranormal romance, the underlying story about Seir and him being missing, was very well developed and blended together and I for one can't wait to see how this series continues! And no, the story did end, but there is definitely room to see what lays in the future for the other brothers.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Fist off I am blown away that this the first book By Ms. Winters because I am full on in for the long run. I love the world building and the characters. I want to know more and before I even finished the book I was looking to make sure she was writing more.

I enjoy books that have a world building with Greek Mythology, as I love the different stories and incorporations. What I really loved is that Ms Winters did her research and paid attention to different aspects of her story line, including Latin and Demonology. (I googled the character names and was thoroughly entertained)

I enjoyed that while Verrin was an incubus he wasn't sleazy, he was intriguing, cocky and vulnerable...Hello Premium Alpha! He was the complete package...Hehe Incubus...and he was refreshing. I cant wait to see more of the brothers and where their stories go. Poor Seir has been in a spot of bad luck and I'm hoping he can mend his relationships.

Cass was my type of bookworm. I liked that she was true to herself and that she didn't fall straight into Verrin's charm. She stood apart and created respect for herself. I also loved that she was a relatable character and not an airhead.

I will be looking forward to reading more of this series!

A tentative five stars.

This book does NOT contain the standard paranormal romance plot. When the first chapters introduced five unmarried incubi and two unmarried women, the final outcome seemed clear to me: Brother 1 gets Girl A, and the rest happens in the next volume of the series.

It's not as cliché by far. The five incubi are very different characters, the main one (#1), who is inadvertently summoned by a cute librarian (#A) reading a single Latin sentence aloud, is rather different from his brothers. Of course #1 gets #A into bed at one time in the book, but the circumstances are different from all that I read in this genre so far.

There are basically two interwoven stories, which are too unconnected for my taste throughout much of the book, and when they join it's rather far-fetched and needs an omniscient character to work. This is the biggest issue I have with that book. So: 4.5 instead of 5 stars.

No spoilers from me, but the story is not really finished on the last page. I am really interested in the continuation.

A Demon in My Bed was my first novel by Sarah Winters and I enjoyed this paranormal tale. Apart from romance I loved that this novel had a plot which included some mystery and suspense. The story was well-written and very descriptive. Apart from humans there were incubi, succubus, vampire, shifters, angels and even demi-Gods. With some twists and turns you wont expect this page-turner will keep you hooked from start to finish.
I listened to the audible version which was narrated by Logan McAllister. I absolutely loved his voice for these characters. He brought the characters to life and was able to create different personas for them all. His voice was clear and understandable and I enjoyed listening to him.
A Demon in my Bed was a fantastic read and I would highly recommend this page-turner to all paranormal lover. I cant wait to read more in this series.

Looking forward to more

Honestly I came across this book by chance while looking for something else but I am so glad I took a chance on it. I enjoyed the story immensely and can not wait for the next lot of books in the series. I found the characters interesting and fun with great interaction between them all. The author did really well at introducing characters and explaining what they were and a bit of background on them too. I got a little bit confused as to whether we were meant to like or dislike the three "bad" females however I look forward to them possibly being explored in future books. A definite read again book for me and some laugh out loud moments too which made it even better!!

Loved loved oh yes loved this book.

The humour, the family connection between the brothers.... demigoddess, angels . All making a great plot.

Cassidy is you normal , cuddly woman, who summoned an Incubi. Verrin , who is very delighted to see who summoned him. But he has a missing brother, and he and his brothers need find him fast. Fate and other forces are playing with fate.
Enjoyed the way how old myths are brought into this modern world.
Will love find its way between an immortal and his librarian.

I couldn’t get enough!! 💞

This book was absolutely amazing. Just the right amount of paranormal, sex and humor. These brothers are amazing and I’m so excited about book 2. The narration was absolutely perfect. There were so many different characters and Logan was able to seamlessly move from one character to another making sure the listener could easily distinguish the difference between all the characters. Brilliant!! I highly recommend this book!

A well-read supposedly intelligent librarian takes home a mysterious ancient book written in what she thinks is Latin and has a drawing of a scary sexy man in it. She reads a passage out of it in said Latin and then has *no idea*, not even a suspicion of how this man who looks the same as the drawing ended up in her room?

K, I take back the intelligent part. This h is an idiot.

New Writer in Town

I am not your young teenage reader. Yet this book was recommended to me by a young teenage reader who was involved with its creation. As a favor to her I began reading this book. I found it to be real in its characters, but mysterious in its content. I checked on its mythology, and was stunned to find it was researched better than I might have supposed. I began to get the feeling that a certain wizard had begun writing books.
As the pages melted away I also found I was rooting for the protagonists, and cursing the antagonists. Not hard to do, but not in a fantasy, at least not for me. The interactions were young, and rich in with hopeful desires, but not unreal or childlike. There is a "been there" quality in her writing. A feeling of reality you don't expect in a fantasy.
But that reality is what makes this book special. Could this fantasy really happen? That is what floated in my mind as I read on. Not to be driven by fantasy, but to be experienced in a reality that transcends the mythical, and comes alive, alive in your mind, and your heart. Hoping it will come alive in your bed.
I cannot wait for the sequel. Just hoping it is as readable and as rich as this initial attempt was. Watch out for this writer, she has great potential.
