Forth reread: 2022
Do you want to know why teachers go mad? This is why.

Third reread: 2021
Nope, the improvement was clearly in my imagination...

Second read: 2019
Ahh, so some parts of this book have improved with age (or at least a reread). I can't say I am looking forward to teaching it yet again next year.

First read: 2018
Considering the other setwork book for school, this one wasn't as bad. The structure made it far more interesting, opening with fires running through an informal settlement, left one wondering what had happened and who the people were.

It covered some relevant and potentially controversial themes: the fact that striking puts pressure on a lot of families who cannot afford to not work, and who are then faced with violence or the threat of violence for not participating. Many families in SA are faced with that 'rock and a hard place' choice.

However, I did feel that the 'love' and true friendships happened far too quickly, competing with the likes of Romeo and Juliet. The ending also seemed a lot more flat that I hoped for.

It was still an interesting read though, and who knows, maybe the message will penetrate some heads.

Read for school, this review might contain spoilers!

This book is COMPLETELY different than what i would normally read but, I liked it. I liked the meaningfulness behind it, Its truly touching. But, some parts (the romance) were completely rushed. Especially because the timeline is A WEEK. Realistically this book would have made more sense if it played out over a month or two. The fact that there was a full romance, a borderline breakup and a rebound IN A WEEK!!! but other than that, it was alright
