Karen Botha was born in Lincoln and brought up in Yorkshire. She moved to Essex as soon as it was time to build her career.
She worked in Marketing for more time than she’ll admit, and lost more personal time during these years than she cares to remember.
Consequently she retrained as a massage therapist and reflexologist. Not only does she love the interaction with her many clients, but this also gives her time to indulge her passion for writing.
You’ll find a lot of her life in this book – but please, don’t believe everything you read!
4☆ A Taut Steamy, Romantic Suspense with a touch of Crime Thriller/Mystery,
Naked Truths is a Steamy Romantic Suspense, Crime Mystery.
Lucy is a massage therapist who works from Home. Lucy gets a phone call from a potential client asking for a massage on bank holiday. She agrees to see him... and in walks Giles.
Giles is handsome, intriguing, mysterious, strong and commanding and he has certainly captured Lucy's attention. She NEVER mixes business with pleasure.... but Giles is different..... or is he??
Giles is hiding something.... He's been watching Lucy for a while, in the shadows. Biding his time to make a move!
Paula is Lucy's best friend. She is an Ex detective! She doesn't trust Giles. There is just something about him that unnerved her. Yes his perfect in every sense... but what is he hiding?
She can't help herself so she contacts an old colleague Mo, in the force and makes a intriguing discovery! ...... just who is Giles? And... did he kill his Wife?
Naked Truths is told by three points of view... Lucy, Paula and Giles. I really enjoyed this style of writing as it gelled the stories together nicely.
All of the characters are well thought-out, multi layered and endearing. The plot was Taut, the Storyline engrossing, with an enticing mix of suspense, mystery, Romance, Passion and Sex, which made for a compulsive read. The pace is steady, but flowed nicely enabling you to delve into the characters stories as the twists and truth unravel.
If you enjoy Taut Steamy, Romantic Suspense Reads, with a touch of Crime Thriller/Mystery, with a who done it feel then you will enjoy Naked Truths.
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Naked Truths is a fervid, twisty tale that takes you on a journey into the life of Lucy, a massage therapist who inadvertently finds her life turned upside down after she falls for her secretive, intense client, Giles.
The prose is seductive and taut. The characters are focused, mysterious, and multifaceted. And the plot told from alternating POVs is an ominous, compelling mix of twists, turns, deception, friendship, family, desire, tension, murder, and romance.
Naked Truths is a menacing, entertaining, erotic tale that lags slightly at times but is overall an alluring, solid start to the Naked series with one or two nice unexpected surprises, and some delightfully, intriguing characters.
Thank you to Karen Botha and Rachel's Random Resources for providing me with a copy in an exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this one. It's a really good romantic suspense. I think it's billed as erotic suspense but to me the sex scenes weren't anything I haven't read in books billed as romantic so I guess the classification will depend on your comfort levels there. It actually took a lot longer to get to those scenes than I expected too.
I enjoyed the characters. I liked that we had 3 voices within the tale. One of them Paula, is an ex-policewoman and there are more books to come with her and Lucy. This intrigues me as Lucy is the love interest rather than any kind of Miss Marple so I'd quite like to see how a second book plays out. I'd have quite liked a Paula and Mo book (not a voiced character but another policeman) as I enjoyed their working relationship.
Even though it takes place over a number of months it is quite a fast paced book and a good page turner. I read it fairly quickly. There are a number of swerves to keep you guessing and not everything is as cut and dry as you'd expect. Overall I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Blurb: He’s a grieving widower, the perfect boyfriend, and the prime suspect… Lucy knows the importance of boundaries. As a massage therapist, she keeps her work and her personal life completely separate. But when a handsome widower shows up on her table and sparks an instant attraction, Lucy is shameless, breaking her rule to cross the line to an erotic romance…
Paula isn’t so sure about her best friend’s perfect man… or the story of how his wife died. To uncover the truth, the former detective infiltrates his social circle. When she examines a scandalous lodger, a jealous brother, and a protective mother-in-law, everyone seems to have a hidden motive for murder…
Lucy is torn between her old friend and her dark new love. Will she follow her head or her heart? And can Paula discover the true killer before her friend makes a fateful mistake?
Naked Truths is the first book in a series of pulse-pounding erotic thrillers. If you like steamy sex scenes, complex characters, and twists you won’t see coming, then you’ll love Karen Botha’s captivating erotic romance.

This book was OK and it was an enjoyable read. It could have been so much better though.
The ideas behind the plot were good and, like any good crime thriller, there were a few possible suspects. However, the conclusion was implausible and the police were nowhere near to having a viable case to take to the CPS. Even if they’d got to court with it, the defence lawyers would have ripped the evidence to shreds.
I can’t say too much more without giving any many spoilers. I’ve take the trouble to give the author plenty of valuable feedback though. I hope that she takes it in the spirit that is intended. She is very imaginative and creative and I am sure that she will produce many great crime thrillers in the future.
I also agree with some other reviewers that there are far too many grammatical and punctuation errors. I have noticed that there is an update available on Amazon for Kindle readers which may have eliminated these irritating errors.
What works very well is the way that the narrative alternates between the points of view of the three main protagonists.
Firstly, there is Lucy, a masseuse who is never shocked by the revelations of her clients in the privacy of her therapy room as they submit to the beneficial pressures of her knuckles and sharp elbows.
Then there is Giles, one of Lucy’s clients who has been seeking somebody like her to fill the gap left after his wife, Steph, died in suspicious circumstances from a heart condition. Steph had been a firefighter and a woman of action and spontaneity. To Giles, Lucy seems to be the perfect replacement.
Finally, there is Paula, Lucy’s best friend and a former police officer who turns her detective skills to trapping fly-tippers for the local council. Paula knows that Giles was the prime suspect in his wife’s death but she is afraid that revealing his past to Lucy will endanger their friendship.
I was also impressed by the brilliant writing of the sex scenes. They are very hot, authentic and certainly had my pulse racing and my temperature rising. The book could have benefited from a few more such scenes without negatively impacting the main storyline. They were relevant and I am sure that other readers would enjoy such interludes as much as I did.
I look forward to this author’s future offerings. With better proof-reading and a good police procedural advisor, she shows great promise.
This is the third book I have read of Karen Botha and I loved it too. This was a Romantic Suspense and it didn't fail with the amount of both genres. The author has a way with creating a story and giving us just enough information and mystery that make us want to turn the page.
This story follows three characters since it has different POVs, but mainly it's about Lucy. And all of the character complex, well written and with secrets, but the most fun about them was their interactions, the friendships, family relationships, the tension, the mystery, and the romance.
The storyline was very exciting, with twist and turns, a fast pace and a good flow that made me wonder about each page and each character. I never really knew were the book was going so that was a positive thing. And I'm not say much about it because it's a suspense book and you guys should be surprised and enjoy each moment.
Overall, Karen Botha is amazing. She knows how to make us wonder, and relate to the characters as well as being drawn to the storytelling. It was a great start of a series.
[I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Karen for the eCopy of this book and for allowing me to join in the fun and by being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book.]
I'm not into graphic sex so I won't pursue any other titles in this series. However, I'm very pleased there was very little profanity/obscenities in the book; the sexual escapades were plenty without that. It's a predictable read, very easy to figure out early on if you've read as many of these types of books as I have. My biggest gripe with it, apart from the sex, is the multitude of grammatical and punctuation errors. I am a nerd when it comes to those two fine points, and so many mistakes drove me to distraction. Granted, that's the norm these days but it still doesn't mean I like it. One thing that I've noticed with several English authors, including this one, is their infuriating use of a question mark at the end of a sentence. Why? A question mark is just that: it ends a question -- not a sentence, a statement or exclamation. Ask a question, use a question mark. And someone PLEASE tell this author "aswell" hasn't been used since the Middle Ages; therefore, it's considered a misspelling. So let's get our grammar, punctuation, and common expressions correct AS WELL.
"It’s amazing what people tell you when they’re naked. I’ve heard all sorts of things."
Lucy is a massage therapist and prides herself at screening out the weirdos who try to get an appointment with her for lascivious reasons. So when she first meets Giles she is cautious but attracted to his quiet and forthright mannerisms. When her attraction turns into love, the warnings of her best friend Paula go unheeded until the unusual death of his wife a few years earlier brings doubts that she cannot ignore.
This is truly a suspenseful novel that kept me on edge throughout. It is told from 3 perspectives: Lucy, Giles, and Paula; and it’s interesting to experience the different personalities and how they perceive things individually. The characters are well developed and they are powerful, diverse and sometimes perilous to themselves or to others. Botha’s way of drawing you in, making you second guess yourself, and adding a surprising ending is skillful and cunning. An exciting first book in the Naked series and one I plan to continue. Highly recommend.
I think this novel is best suited as a very short story rather than stretched out. I am not persuaded that proper research has been undertaken with police procedures or criminal..law - the notion that a local authority worker, former 'detective' can in any way interfere or be involved in a cold case is questionable. An obsessed stalker, dislikeable characters, in a plot ending that is predictable and not at all a cliff hanger. Also uncomfortable with what I felt was the questionable representation of one demographic of Zimbabwe
Wow! I thought the story was very good, at keeping me guessing on who done it. I loved the characters the author made for the story. Some were likable and some were not. I was wrong till the end on who did it. Very good read till the end. Hope to keep reading more from the author’s book shelves, for a long time. Even some of the pages were set on fire by some of the characters. “I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book and was not required to leave a review.” Thank you for sharing your book with us.
A thrilling romantic mystery in a new series by Karen Botha!
This is the first book in a new series by Karen Botha. It is thrilling, suspenseful, and romantic all in one book. Lucy is a massage therapist and keeps her professional life and personal life separate until she meets Giles, a widower. Lucy's best friend, Paula isn't sure about Giles. But Lucy and Paula need to work together to find a murderer.
This book had twists and turns on top of turns and twists! It starts out as a plain romance and then morphs into a mystery. Every suspect in the story seemed to be the culprit – until I met the next suspect – or circled around to a previous one that I thought were ruled out and could not possibly have done it. I really enjoyed the book. The story was well-written with a good plot. The characters were well-developed and behaved in a very believable fashion.
Thought this book was a really good read, started off a little bit slow with a mystery surrounding it. Gradually got hooked on the boom and was trying to work out what the situation was and how it had come about and couldn't put it down! Such an easy read, I downloaded it and completed it within a week.
This shouldn't be classed as erotica, this is a top notch thriller. Was a wife murdered, natural death or suicide. Was it the brother, the husband, the mother, the best friend or their wives. When Lucy dated the widow, her murder squad best friend decides to investigate. This should be made into a BBC series.
It wasnt really erotica, the sex scenes were ok. Maybe because the characters are British, but they seemed off to me and made it kind of difficult to really get in to the book. the ending was very abrupt, just leaves you wondering what happened. A few spelling errors here and there but overall it was a good read.
Well drawn characters and an intriguing plot. The writing style is very readable though there are tiny errors which jump out at times. The first person narration from central characters keeps the intrigue going and it seems a shame the author chose to slot this into the erotic market as the psychological thriller aspect is far stronger in my view.
I loved the female characters in this story! They were strong yet vulnerable and they both knew their individual self worth. I loved the bond that they had. I like the police characters and how they allowed the investigation to proceed as necessary. Would recommend this book to those who like stories with an unexpected twist.
arc review For honest review. This story has at of mystery ,suspence, and more. It's a crime story of giles ex wife death and when dating lucy her best friend get suspicious and what's to find out the truth. Awesome story.
This is a well written book with strong well developed characters. The author does a great job pulling you into the story and keeping you reading to the end. I loved the book and recommend reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
I really enjoyed this page-turner mystery. This is a true mystery since you can't figure out the truth until it is revealed at the end. There are so many twists and turns that deceive you, that it makes the story truly interesting. Great characters and plot. I'm looking forward to the next book.
This book is brilliant. A real page turner. Gripping and exciting; intrigue and lovely, heart-stopping and breath-taking. It will make you wonder who to trust. Loved it.
Loved the story. It took me back to when my sister-in-law was alive and I used to call to chat with her I miss our conversations and her accent. Fun times Great story
I want to start off this review at the end of the book momentarily, but it is for good reason. It's so I can say: nooooo!!!! I turned the page to get closer to closing off the book and was left with the book abruptly ending RIGHT as it was getting really interesting!!! WHY?!?!?!?!?! Now I've gota wait until the next book to find out what they said!
As frustrating as I find that it's one hell of a way to ensure people come back and buy the second book. And I'm sure you will want to because I totally got suckered in with this one. It slowly builds up the tension then seems to release it, only to build it up to breaking point and when you think everything is all good all of a sudden things don't make sense anymore!
I don't know if this is because one of the characters has split personalities, or whether Karen didn't realise (and I'm not comparing exact words, just my memory of the wording) that at one stage of the book they were thinking and saying one set of thoughts and feelings only to have that completely contradicted at the end of the book. I honestly don't know, but it really added to the suspense levels and my brain going "what the hell is going on?!"
Anyway I should probably tell you a little about it! We have 3 characters that this book follows and it's not really an even spread as to who you're following. It's more of a who does it make sense to follow at this point of the book? We start off following Lucy as she's painting her house on a public holiday and she gets a call for a new client to get a massage.
Giles is the only guy that we follow and the book pretty much rotates around him. He's at the centre of everything and it's his character that I felt had those conflicts. Some of the conflicts made sense but some of them didn't.
The final character we follow is Paula. Paula is Lucy's best friend and an ex-homicide detective. And it's this that brings her into the story and what forces the story to evolve, change and grow throughout the book. I honestly believe without Paula being the unfortunate third wheel this book would be just another typical romance novel. So having her in the mix throws that out the window and gives us the suspense and craziness that hooks you in.
I feel like I can't really say much else about the book without ruining it for you. With the suspense novels you really need to read the build up and what exactly causes it to really get the full impact. General romance novels you can typically say a little bit about it since they all follow the same framework but I feel like with this style you need to discover each little fact and contemplate it yourself to really enjoy it.
