Three years after the EMP attack brought America to its knees, the Miller family has finally put the worst of the disaster behind them. While modern conveniences like electricity, telephones, and running vehicles are a distant memory, they have turned their West Virginia homestead into a productive and self-sustaining farm. Life is hard, but there is food on the table and they have hope for the future. Kenny Miller, soon to be eighteen, is ready to become a man in his own right. Engaged to Sarah, a beautiful young woman from a nearby farm, he plans on starting a family of his own next fall. Sarah and Kenny work hard, save their money, and make sacrifices so they can start off their life together right. Disaster strikes, and Sarah is placed in terrible danger far from Kenny. In a world with no law and order, justice is dispensed from the barrel of a gun. How far will Kenny go to get her back? Meanwhile, Chief Bud Howell is ready to hang his hat up and retire, but an old friend calls on him in his hour of need. A plot is uncovered that puts the future of everyone in West Virginia at stake. Can Chief Howell summon the strength to solve one last crime, perhaps the most important of his career?

** SPOILERS AHEAD ** I found this book to be a well written adventure story but totally unrealistic as part of a trilogy with the same characters from books one and two. In book one Amy's fear of even holding a gun is brought up repeatedly. The idea of her having become hardened to the levels described in this book compared to the woman she was last described as being is just way too big a stretch, especially with no information on anything that she's been through to change her this much is just totally unrealistic.
This was a very fast paced book with a good plot line. I hate thugs. I really hate post-apocalyptic thugs that try to control the world and it is lots of fun to see them get what they deserve. Amy (Kenny's mom) has changed a lot. I kind of remember that she was very timid in the start of the series and now she kicks butt as well as her son. Probably the apocalypse provides a steep learning curve.
It was an EMP apocalypse and even the cockroaches came out to feast! Retribution brings closure in a book full of action and twists and even a HEA! Beautifully written and balanced it caused a near adrenaline rush once or twice. Killing off Wyatt was a blow. But oh my has Amy ever changed! I loved all of the ending to this story, it was a real pleasure to read.
I always wanted to know how people went on after the EMP. This book takes places 3 years later and people are starting to adapt. Along comes an evil, grasping politician. I loved that idea instead of the gangs and criminals that are usual in these days after books. I just wish this wasn't the last in the series.
Fantastic conclusion to a fantastic series. If you like survival type/end of the world type books you will absolute love this series. I couldn’t put the books down.
A good story continues. The next book is in line and I am eagerly anxious to get into it. So this is short but anyone who likes genre will enjoy this series.
I’ve enjoyed this series from the beginning. John Winchester’s writing always leaves me excited to read on. Highly recommend! Tony Mastrolacasa, Author, EMP: Collateral Darkness.
