Returning to the Mirror Universe!

This single comic book is part of the Free Comic Book Day event in 2017.

Creative Team:

Writers: David Tipton & Scott Tipton

Illustrator: J.K. Woodward

PICARD’S RISING IN THE MIRROR UNIVERSE!

This comic book from the 2017 FCBD event, is an introductory short story for the incoming series Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken, where you’ll know the rising to power of the mirror version of Jean-Luc Picard in (obviously) the Mirror Universe.

The Terran Empire was overwhelmed by the Cardassian-Klingon Alliance and now it’s limited to its own Solar System, where the ISS Stargazer is one of the few remaining battle cruisers, where the cunning and manipulative Jean-Luc Picard is the captain, along with his fearsome officers: the Borg-augmented Data, the mental inquisitor Deanna Troi and the sadistic mass murderer Tasha Yar.

In the middle of a fleet where the only way to survive and progress is to be ruthless, we find Lieutenant Reginald Barclay as our guide to this dark parallel dimension.

Additional to this short story, you’ll have brief glimpses of other Star Trek titles from IDW: Star Trek: Boldly Go, Star Trek / Green Lantern: Stranger Worlds and Star Trek: Waypoint.

"I can't stand Picard or his mindwitch."
...
"Lieutienant Commander Data. Science officer and Picard's pet android. I don't like being this close to him. He smells of... ozone."

Evil alternate ST:NG universe. Picard is so yummy and you get to see his muscly arms here, since in the alternative universe apparently no one believes in sleeves. Data is looking pretty good, as well. However, Picard has a goatee and it looks horrible. :(

Is the only thing you're going to talk about is how attractive the men are?

Um.... yes?

Okay.

There's a also a really weird Green Lantern / Star Trek Reboot crossover tacked on to this comic. o.O

This was ok. I borrowed the whole series from the library, so I might read the rest, but I’m not too thrilled with the idea of the Mirrorverse. I can’t really say how good the story is, because it had barely started when it was over.

The titular story is only 19 pages long, pretty short. The other 20 pages are teasers of several other Star Trek comics. So not even half of the content is what it says on the cover.

The storyline is the usual Mirrorverse, aka assassination attempts, slavery, silly outfits. Plus I never liked Barclay and don‘t care…

The artwork is iffy, aka the human anatomy is off. Heads are sitting at unrealistic angles, arms are on steroids and out of proportion to the rest of the body, it‘s not pretty.

Seriously, that arm looks as if Data borrowed it from the Hulk…

Not recommended. I will definitely not get another one of these.

When Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) was airing for seven seasons, it never did explore the Mirror Universe trope. This comic book rectifies that and gives as great introduction beyond the mirror. The zero issue made want to read the rest of the story, so it worked pretty well.

To be fair, I should start out by saying I really dislike the mirror universe. That being said, this comic is pretty much well done if you look at the story in the confines of the alternate or parallel universe. No this is not Star Trek based on IDIC that many of us love, this is Star Trek that is of course, the exact opposite of that. I enjoyed Lt. Barclay's perspective, and Picard's machinations to remove his rival. The dialogue happened to be unwieldy but that is understandable. I just don't like the concept of the Mirror Universe that much to get into this series. Alternatively I really enjoyed the "Waypoint" preview. I'm really looking forward to that release. I wasn't really interested in the Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover, although those are two of my favorite franchises.

This was a real shame of a comic. I'm a big Trekkie, as some of you will know from me binge reading the Star Trek comic Boldly Go within an hour, but this missed it big time.

The only thing I liked about this was the art work. Almost a rough, unclean water colour style, it was nice to look at, interesting and sweet in a way. Unfortunately, the story didn't make much sense, it didn't grip me, and it didn't make me wanna read more of TNG comic series.

Also, after 49%, it just becomes comic previews and samples from other on going series. Such a shame, this had potentional. Regretting reading it.

I would highly recommend missing this and reading Star Trek: Boldly Go. Shame this was so bad.

The Next Generation crew is looking pretty bad-ass here. This prequel to an upcoming comic series features Captain Picard, Troi, Data, and Tasha Yar on the Starship I.S.S. Stargazer in a alternate universe in which the Klingon/Cardassians alliance is powerful. Low ranking crewman Barkley gets a chance to shine in this issue, and reestablishes equilibrium of one person’s fate no matter what universe they belong in. An after note by the authors whets my appetite for further story lines in this Mirror Broken universe.

Picked this up on Free Comic Book Day. This was the first comic book I've ever read and it was good enough to make me want to go out and get the first issue, which I loved. I was disappointed with the fact that it was so short, but I suppose that's how they get you hooked. I credit this freebie with getting e hooked on a whole on genre. The artwork is amazing and as a huge fan Star Trek and in particular TNG, it's fun to see what the mirror universe might be like. I will definitely be following this series through to its conclusion.

On the I.S.S. Stargazer, the story opens with Lieutenant Barclay’s POV.

Barclay is sour. He hates Spock; he also despises Captain Picard and his “mindwitch.”

The right action at the right time earns Barclay success. And a promotion.

Very, very interesting artistic style. Surrealistic. Strong color work. Good usage of facial expressions.

Bonus features include different artistic renderings and interviews with the authors and artists regarding the aesthetics of the Mirror Universe.

Also, snippets of: Boldly Go episode; Star Trek / Green Lantern: Stranger Worlds; and Waypoint.

Not a big comic fan but have enjoyed ST over the years. This is a great little story that fits in well with the DS9 Mirror universe. Picard becomes a man of action and the ISS Enterprise crew is rebuilt as he successfully engineers it's capture.
Unlike many, I liked the artwork as well, but then I'm not much of a Graphic Novel expert. I am looking forward to my order of the next 6 issues though!

As a descendant of enslaved and indentured people, I am definitely not entertained by the "mirror universe" plot line of the Enterprise actively engaged in the enslavement and selling of various species. According to its revised mission statement:

"Its continuing mission: to conquer strange new worlds, to enslave new life and new civilizations..."

Really?!

This dark and alternative story that delves into the shadow side of some of the most beloved characters from The Next Generation may be appealing to some fans, just not to this one.

As for the art, I do not think it was a great idea to give Captain Picard the body type of a bouncer or bodyguard. And Data...poor Data... Who thought that a franchise that celebrated and promoted "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations" (IDIC), would be reduced to this? Two words: Epic Fail.

Nice peek into the Mirror

Interesting window into the Mirror Universe. Series seems to have good potential. Also enjoyed the extras, like the previews of the crossover between the Lanterns and the new Star Trek. My main criticism is that it's too short, but all single issue comics are.

This is a good prelude and intro into the Mirror universe. Nothing that stands out as astounding or anything, but I can’t think of a reason not to give it four stars. FCBD issues are definitely hit or miss. This doesn’t feel like an ad for the series, but more like a teaser, which is large part of what makes it work.

A fun beginning to an incredible universe. Star Trek's the mirror universe has been featured in most major Trek series, except the Next Generation (and Voyager, I suppose.) Now, see it for the first time with the TNG crew. The art is brilliant and and the story crafting explains how the Terran Empire manages to claw itself away from ultimate collapse.

The Mirror Universe from the
original Star Trek series
is one of the most loved
premises from that deeply loved series.
In this book Capt. Jean -Luc Picard
of the ISS Stargazer is tired of being on the losing
end of the equation.
A ramshackle old ship in an fallen Empire
barely holding onto one last system.
When he finds out that the Empire has built
a new advanced ship
the Galaxy Class ISS Enterprise
He decides to seize command
and then ride that brand new
warship to glory.

Oh man! Not believable at all. And it's like the artist just figured out how to draw muscular super hero arms and buffed up everyone and someone in charge decided that if you were ripped enough you didn't need sleeves on your uniform.

It's like the Sith version of Star Trek. Ambition rules, everyone is trying to kill one another, and everyone is generically boringly evil. Some complexity would be nice, as it stands I can't take it seriously.

Good story

Despite the story being so short, it held my attention. Having Lt. Barkley in it really makes the story that much more interesting. What happened to the days where comic book stories were much longer!

Interesting enough.

I believe I got this comic for free. It was certainly interesting enough to have been worth my time, but I don't make enough money for future issues to be worth the expenditure.

Great!

Awesome art. Entertaining story. Makes me interested in possibly buying more of this series. The characterization seems spot on. I also enjoyed the Green Lantern crossover preview.

Decent comic. I normally do not read comics but I made an exception for the mirror universe TNG. I'm not a huge fan of the mirror universe, but I love TNG so this was a must read. It was an interesting spin on classic characters.

This had snippets of various Star Trek comics. Out of all of them I preferred the “mirror universe” one set on the Enterprise with the Next Generation crew. I want to see if I can find the full thing so I can finish it.

Pretty solid actually. Story was kind of horrifying, but I guess that's the setup for this world. It was also nice to have a few strips of other Star Trek comics in the back.
