The X-Files meets The X-Men in this digital original companion series that's set in the world of Pittacus Lore’s #1 New York Times bestselling I Am Number Four series and coincides with Generation One.
This is the third 100-page novella, continuing the exciting story of fan favorite characters Six and Sam. Following their dangerous battle in the mountains of Montana, the couple has now been ripped apart.
Sam is imprisoned aboard a ship that’s miles off the coast of Mexico. His Legacies have been taken away from him. He doesn’t have any back-up. And if he can’t find a way to free himself soon, he’s going to become a lab experiment.
Although safely recovering at the Human Garde Academy, Six has had her abilities stripped as well. Ignoring everyone’s warnings, though, she decides to mount a rescue mission with the help of Nine and her young charge Nemo. But it’s three of them versus who knows how many teens with Legacies who may be working for their enemy….
Six and Sam may no longer have their powers, but does it mean they’re truly powerless?
The Legacy Chronicles novellas are published as individual digital originals, and the first three stories will also be available together in one print volume: The Legacy Chronicles: Trial by Fire.
The world building and story were good, I will remain in love with this universe and all the possibilities that it has, the direction that is taking and the pace in which it moves. There I had no issues.
But the characters were... Well lacking. Not even exactly the characters but rather their interactions with each other. It just felt like some of the chemistry was missing. It may have been due to the situation, but in any way, it just wasn't satisfying.
Leaving that behind, the plot just got more interesting. It took a surprisingly dark turn that I wasn't expecting at all - responsible to most of the rating at the end - and adds a great depth to the story.
Still, these side stories are not that bad. Is useful to remember that these side stories and the main action happens in the main books. This is ways to fill us in, in what may become important details.
Still enjoying this set of short stories focusing on Sam and Six set after the original series and overlapping with Generation One (the Reborn series).
Six is amazing. Like, she just is. Even without her powers, she still kicks butt and it's amazing. She'll be back, no doubts.
I like how Nemo has gotten to the "capable" level where she can fend for herself. Her character has really grown during the past two shorts. I feel like she's kinda stubborn about Ghost, but I get it, they were friends.
Honestly when Seamus said that there was something Sam should've known about his dad, I thought McKenna was going to become some secret Mogadorian double-agent or something. I didn't forget about what Seamus said, and I'm glad that Sam remembered to follow up.
The tease of John and Marina... I wanted them to show up so badly.

I really enjoyed the original series. This departure is painful. The only reason I read this book is because I’d already bought it. I’ll use dialogue from the book to make my point.
“I have to say, it’s hard to believe you guys defeated the entire Mog army.”
I’m in total agreement. To keep this plot on track, the author had to remove all of Sam’s and Six’s legacies. Then, Sam is captured and is held in a room with a computer and internet connection which he uses to email his location to Six. OMG. What luck!
“He went over to the desk and looked at the computer. It was on. He searched around the desktop, found an icon for an internet browser and clicked on it. When it opened, he said a silent thank-you for his luck, then went to his email account. As it opened, he fished out the paper in his pocket and unfolded it. Then he typed a quick email to Six and hit Send.”
This spin-off? Doesn’t sound so successful.
“[O]ur Legacies gone, and now we find out we’re actually working for some group no one wants to give us any real information about and who has taken the technology our mission brought back. Doesn’t sound so successful. Not to me, anyway.”
And finally, the dialogue was so stilted. ‘He said’ or ‘she said’ or somebody ‘said’ was at the end of nearly every sentence.

Are we even sure that James Frey is *actually* writing these novellas and wasn’t replaced by another author? cause damn. The storytelling and writing went completely downhill compared with the original series. Algo, repeating every few pages that Nemo is /exactly/ like Six won’t make it real. It’s awful when authors start milking their projects with a bunch of low quality spinoffs.
If you've read the entirety of the I am Number Four series and absolutely need more, then this 4-novella-long miniseries (soon to be 6-novellas-long) is perfect for you. If you haven't read the entirety of the I am Number Four series, or you did and didn't quite enjoy it, then don't read these. They're basically a sequel series to the original series except much shorter and quite a bit more disappointing.
Separated, Six and Sam each struggles to figure out what's going on so that they can defeat the newest threats against them. Using cleverness and their fighting skills (although not their Legacies, which have been blocked), they determine to the best of their abilities how to overcome these newest enemies. "Up in Smoke" does not quite live up to the excitement of the earlier novellas.
I just want to say that the scene when Nemo was in the water with Dennings and she called the sharks to kill him. That was THE best and most satisfying part of the whole story. I loved it. Anyways that’s all I have to say.

In this third and final Novella, Six and Sam, along with there gang of misfits realise that Dennings is organising not just fights between the Human Garde, but he is bringing them to locations so that rich people can actually hunt and kill them like trophies. Further to this, they have also realised that they are being run by someone else, and that this person wants to remove certain parts of their brains so that he can harvest glands from them, and try and gain access to their powers, not only for himself, but for other rich people (older rich people of course, who are annoyed that only teenagers gained access to Loric Legacies). In this final part of the first three Novella’s, there is a race against time to save several lives, as Sam has been taken by Dennings and his crew. But there are others still missing also, and it is only a matter of time before they turn up dead. I don’t want to give anything away, no spoilers for the third Novella. This is an intense end to this part of the Saga, with everything coming to a climatic end as Six and the other Human Garde start a desperate search, aided by Nine, Lexa and other elements of the HGA to find those missing before it is too late. They are joined by McKenna and his resources, but there are other aspects to McKenna’s story that become apparent in this third book that leave Six reeling and unclose all sorts of connections. The Chronicles continue to be a political thriller that is very cleverly done, bringing in aspects of not just the Loric characters and the Human Garde, but all sorts of other factions from the previous stories and new aspects as well. It makes for a really great read. The world building continues to be fantastic in this series, using well thought out locations that have been connected well (especially given the use of teleporters), but when they are described, you really feel like you are in those locations (The descriptions of the at-street level stuff is amazing, you really feel like you are watching some of the performance art, or walking down those streets, which as someone on the other side of the world, I really appreciated. It is something I quite often point out as an Aussie, that I don’t feel that connection sometimes, but this has been done very well). As with each of the books – the character work has been brilliant, from Sam and Six, who continue to be exceptional characters, to the new list of Human Garde. I said in the last review, I really thought Sam had developed so well from the original character he was, into this new grown up (almost adult?), as he has seen so much, matured. He takes the younger Garde on, passing on his experience, not just Legacy, but also life experience, and does it so well. This is one of the really great parts of this series. Six is another great character, who is struggling with the angst of her coming to grips with who she is after the end of the Mog War, and now being a Loric on a planet full of Humans. She is an alien out of time and space, in a time of supposed peace, without a war. She is really struggling, and it is interesting watching her character develop. Added to that are the younger Garde, coming to grips with new Legacies that have been thrust upon them, in a world that seems them as freaks, parents disowning them, a world that is forcing them to go to the HGA, they have no rights just because some alien gave them superpowers? How is that fair? Their lives have been ruined in their eyes. It is fascinating to watch. This is a really great series to read – and this final part is really brilliant as it wraps up this storyline with Dennings and the ‘Fight Club’, as well as some of these kids, and what is going to happen to them. This is an absolute must read for any fan of the series.
